Millard Buck Stanford

According to Alabama records, Milliard Buck Stanford was born 1856/1857 in Dale County, Alabama and died in 1930 in Coffee County, Alabama.

His parents are listed as Samuel Stanford and Jane Smith. However, I can find not records for either Samuel Stanford or Jane Stanford that appear to match.

Does anyone have information on this family?

Great to hear from you!

I literally stumbled across Brant Stanford's death notice and decided to do some research to see if he was related to my Stanford family. He wasn't, but I didn't want to waste the research.

Since your family is from Pennsylvania, you are probably descended from either the New England Stanfords or the Stanfords of Dorchester County, Maryland...both of whom expanded into Pennsylvania and then westward into Illinois.

My family history is posted at www.herbstanford.net, if you're interested.

Hi,
I am a the great-granddaughter of William Rufus King Stanford. I am the granddaughter of his daughter, Margaret Stanford who married Robert Olin Williams. I am the daughter of Larry Wynn Williams, who was Margaret and Olin's fifth and last child. I find it interesting to read about my great grandparents. I was named after great-grandma in Kate as my middle name. I have an older brother who carry's on the name Brant. I would like to comment that Great-Uncle Brant's name was NOT Brantley. It was simply Brant Stanford. What interest you about my great-grandfather?

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

GEORGE R. STANFORD
JANUARY 19, 1912

The remains of George R. Stanford, of Little Rock, Ark., a former resident of this locality, passed through Forrest on Sunday evening, accompanied by his brother C.M. Stanford, of Rush Hill, Mo., en-route to East Florence, N.Y. for interment. At Forrest Frank Stanford joined his uncle and accompanied him to New York with the remains.
George R. Stanford was a brother of L.B. Stanford, of Forrest, and of D.J. Stanford and W.S. Stanford, of Chatsworth. He resided here a number of years ago and worked for D.J. Stanford. He has been a railroad conductor for a good many years, running out of Little Rock, Ark., was unmarried, and is reported to have been quite well to do. He was 47 years of age.
Governor Leland Stanford of Ca.

My maiden name is Stanford. We were always told somehow related to the above. Supposedly, the governor was either an uncle or great uncle to my grandfather, William Lillian Stanford b. Feb. 1886 in MS and his sister Azelie Stanford b. 1881 MS. Their father was John (Jean-Baptiste) Stanford b. in North Carolina but don't know year. My grandfather's mother was Eunice Moncrief b. 1858 in MS. I am stuck. My grandfather died in Houston, Tx. in 1934 and we've never found or knew much info on his family because apparently his dad, John, died b/4 1900. Have catholic church records verifying names of parents.

Apparently, John Stanford & Eunice Moncrief married in MS, had two children 1881 & 1886 in MS then I find the two children living w/a woman by the name of Nunez/Guidry in Vermillion Parish, La. on the 1900 census. Have info on these two children verifying parents but can't find parents until we find mom, Eunice Moncrief Stanford on the 1910 census living in Beaumont, jefferson county, Tx. w/daughter & family listed as widowed. The daughter died in 1913 during childbirth, then my grandfather died in 1934 and don't know what happened to either of their parents. We are totally lost. A male cousin of mine, Leland R. Stanford and I have both done the family tree DNA but can't find any significant connections to Stanfords on that site. Was told that might work in our favor because nobody on that site has laid claim as to being related to Amasa Leland Stanford. I was recently sent a photo of my grandfather's sister, and she very much resembles Amasa Leland Stanford. Looks Scotish/Irish. We always thought it a joke when told of possible relation to Amasa Leland Stanford until contact was made with Azelie Stanford Boudreaux's family just last year. They also were told of family connections so possibly there is some truth to this. However, since I can't find any further information on our John Stanford b. in NC the trail stops. If anyone out there has any info that might help me I would be extremely appreciative! My email is Bdavidson@kc.rr.com.

Re: Stanfords in Ireland and New Haven, CT

My gt,grandfather was Thomas Stanford, born in Mohill in 1830. He was married to Bridget McQueeney. His son was my grandfather Charles A. Stanford born in New Haven in 1871. He was a druggist in New Haven. He died before I was born. I just found the information, finally, on the Stanfords of Mohill and New Haven, CT. I was quite surprised to discover that he had 7 siblings. I only knew of l. It is quite a large clan. Siblings as follows: Mary Jane, dob 9/23/1862;Katie,dob 1863; Eliza dob 7/11/1865;James,dob 3/24/1867; Jos. 1/29/1869; Chas, 1/27/1871; Thomas 1873; Ellen(nellie) 6/9/1876. I have no information on any of these people except Thomas?

moran.marilynr@comcast.net

The four immigrants were obviously further back than Leland. It is the railroad magnate that I'm referring too. My mother has an original newspaper clipping of him driving the golden spike into the railroad. I just can't find out a lot. Wish I could get hold of that book I've read about existing. Thanks.

Assuming that you're referring to the Leland Stanford who was a railroad magnate and governor of California, he was born in the United States. So were several generations before him. His great-grandparents were David Stanford and Lydia Morse of Massachusetts. I've never heard the story of Leland's being one of four immigrant brothers from England.

Mystery Stanford Marriages in Georgia

Georgia records list several marriages prior to 1870by Stanfords whom I have not been able to identify. Any help in making connections for any of the following Stanfords would be appreciated:

Julia A. Stanford m. John Polor, 10 Jun 1866, Marion County

Georgia Stanford m. Oliver P. Awtery on 6 Jan 1870, Greene County. Oliver P. Awtery/Autry was bon about 1838 in Georgia and died on 3 Jul 1919 in Georgia. Based on census records, it appears that Georgia Stanford was born 1838/1840.

George Stanford m. Indiana Treadway on 15 Nov 1874, Greene County.

Peggy [Margaret?] Stanford m. Henry Carroll on 25 Mar 1804 in Upson/Warren County.

Elizabeth Stanford m. Joseph Hill on 13 Mar 1823 in Upson/Warren County.

Elizabeth Stanford m. William Harris on 27 May 1820 in Upson/Warren County.

Elizabeth Jane Stanford m. Frederick J[udkins] Greene on 26 Oct 1831 in Baldwin County. Frederick was born on 22 Jan 1806 in Baldwin County, Georgia and died on 20 Aug 1885 in Schley County, Georgia. Evidently, Elizabeth Jane died before 1833 since Frederick married Mary Ann Parham Hill on 25 Jul 1833 in Jasper County, Georgia.

William Stanford m. Catherine Daniel on 22 Jan 1818 in Putnam County.

Lydia Stanford m. John [Henry] Peebles on 25 Sept 1831 in Jefferson County. Census records indicate that John was born about 1808 in Georgia and Lydia was born abut 1810 in Georgia. By 1860, the family was living in Henry County, Alabama.

Mary Stanford m. William Williams on 25 Nov 1827 in Walton County.

Elizabeth Stanford m. George Barbour on 8 Dec 1818 in Upson/Warren County.

Eunica Stanford m. Orrin [Auren/Oren] J. Webb on 19 Sep 1840 in Monroe County.

Martha Stanford m. Thomas H. Brown on 10 Jun 1840 in Bartow County.

Martha Melvina Stanford m. Berryan [Berryman?] Greenway on 2 Aug 1840 in Emanuel County.

Martha Stanford m. Terry Oliver on 4 May 1843 in Upson/Warren County.

Mary Ann Stanford m. Wm. Carraway on 5 May 1843 in Talbot County.

Penelope Stanford m. James Smith on 8 Dec 1831 in Hancock County.

Sally [Sarah?] Stanford m. Tristram Bethea on 12 Dec 1834 in Fayette County.

Elizabeth Stanford m. John Logan on 15 Apr 1854 in Butts County.

Milton A. Stanford m. Martha Hanks on 16 Jan 1852 in Harris County.

Martha Stanford m. Enoch Howell on 13 Dec 1849 in Upson/Warren County.

Elizabeth Stanford m. Rebun [Reuben M.] Wilder on 27 Dec 1841 in Upson/Warren County. Census records indicate that Reuben was born about 1823 in Georgia and Elizabeth was born about 1820 in Georgia. The 1880 census mortality schedule lists R.M. Wilder dieing in Oct 1880 in Warren County. This record indicates that he was widowed at this time, but that appears to be an error…Elizabeth Wilder (age 60) is found living in Warren County in the 1880 census and she is listed in that record as a widow.

Nancy L. Stanford m. David A. Kinnworth [Kenworth?] on 22 Aug 1850 in Carroll County.

Falby [?] Ann Stanford m. Jabez Thompson on 22 Dec 1848 in Upson/Warren County.

Actually, I've never heard of a Joseph Stanford as an ancestor; but then, all I know of the Stanford side goes to my father's grandparents. I know that dad was born in Denver, but before that, I have no idea where the ancestors came from. Just that they were from England.

George Stanford (b. 1836, England, d. 1912, Grayson County, Texas)

While researching my Stanford family, I stumbled across George and his family and did some research, as follows. I hope this is helpful to someone...let me know if you find errors or omissions here.

First Generation

1.	George Stanford was born on 21 Mar 1836 in England. He died on 26 May 1912 in Denison, Grayson, Texas. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Denison, Grayson, Texas.

According to the 1900 census, George immigrated to America in 1857 and became a naturalized citizen in Pennsylvania.

Some researchers indicate that his middle name was "Poter", but no documentation to support this has yet been found.

In 1870, the census finds the family living in Sparta, Kent, Michigan and lists George Staniford (34, farmer), Mary A. (30), Mary A. (12), George (10), John H. (8), William (7), Ellison (5), and Catherine (1).

Based on the places of birth of these children, it appears that the family moved from New York to Michigan about 1865.

We don't known when the family moved to Texas, but the 1900 census lists the family living in Denison, Grayson, Texas and includes George Stanford (64, wood & coal dealer) and his wife Mary A. (59). Living with them is their daughter Hattie E.[Stanford] Keefe (27), her husband Charles A. Keefe (33),
and her daughter Mary Keefe (4).

George married Mary Ann Harrigan on 16 May 1857 in England or Ireland. Mary was born on 10 May 1840 in Northern Ireland. She died on 6 Nov 1919 in Dallas, Dallas, Texas. She was buried on 9 Nov 1919 in Calvary Cemetery, Denison, Grayson, Texas.

Mary's death certificate identifies her father as John Harrigan.

Based on their marriage date, it appears that they married in England or Ireland that Mary immigrated with her husband in 1857.

The 1900 census indicates that Mary and George had 11 children, with 6 surviving in 1900. That matches the number of children identified.

George and Mary had the following children:

2	F	i.	Mary Ann Stanford was born about 1858 in New York.

+	3	M	ii.	George P. Stanford was born in 1859. He died in 1916.

4	M	iii.	John H. Stanford was born about 1862 in New York.

+	5	M	iv.	William Joseph Stanford was born on 19 Aug 1863. He died on 6 Mar 1944.

6	M	v.	Ellison Stanford was born about 1865 in Michigan.

7	F	vi.	Catherine Stanford was born on 29 Aug 1869 in Kent County, Michigan.

Catherine's birth record includes the following notation: "Parents: George Staniford, b. England and Mary Staniford, b. Ireland. Res. Sparta. Occ. Farmer."

8	F	vii.	Harriet Cecilia Stanford was born on 6 Jul 1872 in Kent County, Michigan. She died on 21 Dec 1938 in Dallas, Dallas, Texas. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Denison, Grayson, Texas.

Harriet married Charles Augustus Keefe about 1890 in Texas. Charles was born on 24 Mar 1867 in New York. He died in 1939 in Mercedes, Hildago,Texas. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Denison, Grayson, Texas.

In different census records, Charles lists his place of birth as Michigan, New York, Missouri, and New Jersey.

The 1930 census finds the family living in Dallas, Dallas, Texas and lists Charles A. Keefe (61) and Hattie (57).

Second Generation

3.	George P. Stanford (George) was born in 1859 in New York. He died in 1916 in Denison, Grayson, Texas. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Denison, Grayson, Texas.

In 1900, the census finds the family living in Denison, Grayson, Texas and lists Geo. P. Stanford (39, Bus. Agent), Tillie (35), George T. (6), and Edward (4).

The 1910 census lists the family living in Denison, Grayson, Texas and includes George Stanford (48, fuel dealer, own yard), Sadie (35), George (15), and Edward (13). Sadie's mother Sarah Bodkins (73, b. Kentucky) is living with them.

George married (1) Tilley about 1883. The marriage ended in divorce. Tilley was born in May 1865 in Michigan.

The spelling of "Tilley" is based on her 1909 signature on her marriage certificate.

After Tilley and George divorced, she married John F. Catterlin (b. abt 1868, Ohio) on 3 Jun 1909 in Jackson County, Missouri. We find the family living in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri in both the 1920 and 1930 census.

George and Tilley had the following children:

+	9	M	i.	George Thomas Stanford was born on 15 Dec 1894. He died on 15 May 1934.

10	M	ii.	Edward H. Stanford was born about 1897 in Denison, Grayson, Texas.

In 1920, the census finds Edward Stanford (23, bar keeper, Parker House [Hotel]) living in Kansas City Ward 14, Jackson, Missouri with his mother and step-father.

The 1930 census lists Edward H. Stanfor (33, clerical, carbide store) living in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri with his mother and step-father. This record lists him as divorced, so he evidently married and divorced between 1920 and 1930.

George married (2) Sadie Bodkins about 1908 in Texas. Sadie was born about 1875 in Kentucky.

This was Sadie's second marriage.

5.	William Joseph Stanford (George) was born on 19 Aug 1863 in Albany, Albany, New York. He died on 6 Mar 1944 in Dallas, Dallas, Texas. He was buried on 8 Mar 1944 in Calvary Cemetery, Denison, Grayson, Texas.

In 1900, the census lists the family living in Justice Precinct 2, Grayson, Texas and includes Wm. J. Stanford (36, merchant), Effie (32), Joseph W. (10), Mary (8), and Charles (4).

The 1920 census finds the family in Denison Ward 5, Grayson, Texas and lists William Stanford (55, retail merchant, groceries), Effie (52), Charles L. (24), Effie (17), and Urma (15).

In 1930, the census lists William J. Stanford (66, merchant, grocery store) and Effie M. Stanford (62) living in Denison, Grayson, Texas.

William married Effie Marie Waters about 1889 in Denison, Grayson, Texas. Effie was born on 9 May 1867 in Missouri. She died on 13 Feb 1947 in Dallas, Dallas, Texas. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Denison, Grayson, Texas.

Effie was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Waters (1831-1909) and Martha Stroup (1832-1903).

William and Effie had the following children:

+	11	M	i.	Joseph William Stanford was born on 2 Sep 1889. He died on 12 Jun 1948.

12	F	ii.	Mary Cecilia Stanford was born on 5 Sep 1891 in Denison, Grayson, Texas. She died on 10 Dec 1969 in Denison, Grayson, Texas. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Denison, Grayson, Texas.

Mary married Joseph Henry Linn on 17 Apr 1913 in Dallas, Dallas, Texas. Joseph was born on 24 Feb 1878 in Mascoutah, St. Clair, Illinois. He died on 22 Apr 1975 in Denison, Grayson, Texas. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Denison, Grayson, Texas.

13	M	iii.	Charles Leo Stanford was born on 14 Jun 1895 in Denison, Grayson, Texas. He died on 25 Aug 1956 in Denison, Grayson, Texas. He was buried in Fairview Cemetery (aka Maple Grove Cemetery), Denison, Grayson, Texas.

On 5 Jun 1917, Charles registered for the WWI draft in Grayson County, Texas. This record indicates that he was single and his occuption is listed as "farmer, for self".

The 1920 census finds Charles (24) living at home with his parents.

In 1930, the census finds Charles T. Stanford (34) and his wife Myrtle Stanford (28) living in Denison, Grayson, Texas.

Charles married Myrtle Odom in 1920/1930 in Texas. Myrtle was born on 7 Jan 1902 in Lindale, Texas. She died on 2 Mar 1951 in Denison, Grayson, Texas. She was buried in Fairview Cemetery (aka Maple Grove Cemetery), Denison, Grayson, Texas.

Myrtle was the daughter of J.W. Odom and Alice Williamson.

14	M	iv. She died on 19 Aug 1995 in Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma.

In 1930, the census finds the family living in Waxahachie, Ellis, Texas and lists William C. King (25, teacher, public school), Erma C. King (25), and Raymond C. King (5/12).

Erma married William C. King Jr. about 1928 in Denison, Grayson, Texas.
Hi Herb!
Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I'm a minster and I've had quite a few funerals lately. If you look on my family tree, which is publicly posted, you'll see just how little information I have. It would be great if I could tell dad he was a descendant of Joseph Stanford. When dad get a chance I'l speak to him about what he remembers. I know there's a Big Anne and a Little Anne in the history. Just not sure where.
