Edward Mather Stannard's father was Eliakim Stannard. I have his photograph. My great-grandfather was Melchert Stannard, brother to Francis Orlando Helmer Stannard. Here is some information. He was born 16 May 1786 in Connecticut. He lived in Durham, Greene County, NY when his child Lucinda was born. He died 31 Mar 1871 in Atwater Township, Portage County, OH and can be found in the 1850 and 1870 census there. Here is some information from a local history referring to Lucinda and her parentage.

1885 Portage County History, page 577, Atwater Township: Mrs. E. H. Beach, of Atwater, was born February 6, 1817 in Durham, Greene Co, NY, daughter of Eliakim Jr and Frances Stannard, natives of Connecticut, born May 16, 1786,
and March 22, 1790, respectively. They were the parents of nine children: Adaline, Antoinette, Harriet, Lucinda M, Edward, Lucy, Platt, Mary, Eliakim.
Mrs. Beach's grandparents were Eliakim Sr and Bethia Stannard of Puritan stock, both natives of Conn, former born August 31, 1758 and latter born July 15, 1759,. Lucinda M our subject was twice married, on first occasion November 26, 1843, to Ransom Hinman born in Greene Co NY in 1813, and who when a child came with his parents to this county where he passed the remainder of his life dying December 22, 1857. Our subject afterward, May 1, 1861 was united in marriage with E. H. Beach, also a native of New York, born in Victor. Mr. Beach came to this county in 1861 and is highly respected and favorably known in this community.

I believe his wife was a Frances Mather born 22 Mar 1790 in Connecticut and died 09 Sept 1870. I have not been able to find any information on her parents. If you find anything, I would love to know.

I also have information on Eliakim Sr who was a soldier in the refolutionary war. If you would like to chat more about this you can reach me at juliagriffith@msn.com
Thanks for replying to my post. Someone on the Connecticut mentioned that there were Stannard folks around the Saybrook, Connecticut area. Interesting to hear that there was another Stanard in upstate New York in the early 1800's. Hopefully, Sarah might be related to Ezra in some way.

I 'll have to check the early NY census records to see if I can find Ezra and if his household had any female listed that might be around Sarah's age. At least now, I have something to start with.

Thanks again,

Pat
I have a Polly Page who m. Ezra Stanard abt. 1805 in upstate NY and had a son named Gilbert Stanard.
Since there seem to have been several Gilbert Stannards who were medic doctors in the Sheboygan, WI, area, we can guess there may have been some relationship between the 1827-1909 Gilbert and the Henry and Erastus Stannard who
were there from the early 1850s.

All presumably trace back to Joseph STANNARD and Elizabeth SPENCER of Saybrook, Middlesex Co., CT. (That Joseph was
almost certainly born in England -- he was one of the founders of Saybrook, not born there.)
Looking for info on one of my GG grandmother's parents. This is a long shot because I have very little info to go on.

My GG grandmother was Marietta Wagonen - b. 21 Jul 1826 in Clarksville, Albany County, New York and d. 15 Jun 1917 in Elsmere, Albany County, New York. She married James J. Groesbeck on 16 Apr 1853.

On Marietta' s death certificate, her parents are listed as John Wagonen born in Holland and Sarah Stanard born in Connecticut. That is all the info I have on them. Since Marietta was born in 1826, I assume John and Sarah were married a year or two before that. Presumably, Sarah was born sometime in the early 1800s or even very late 1700s to be of child bearing age in 1826.

I'm not aware if Sarah had any siblings or how she ended up in New York. Name was spelled Stanard on Marietta's death cert but I see some people spell it Stannard, so I have also posted this on the STANARD message board.
I posted to the Connecticut board as well.

If this rings a bell with anyone, I would appreciate any info you might have.

Pat

Cyrus en listed in the RA after his first wife died and his farm failed and was eventually invalided 'unable to stand' some while after a gun ran over his foot in Canada. He lived in oolwich as an 'RA Pensioner'. I have a lot more about all this if you care to email me (same id) at hotmail.com.

Katie, I don't know what ground you've traveled with your Stannard research. I am aware of a couple, Libbeus Stannard and Luceba Fay, who came to Lee County, Illinois, circa 1844 from Madison County, New York. His father was also a Libbeus Stannard, and he was at Vermont.

There were several Stannard/Stanard men at Lee County and at Clarion Township, Bureau County, Illinois, in the mid-1800s. Libbeus Stannard and Luceba Fay had a large family. This is not my line, but has been a subset of my own research because of a Stannard marriage into my Baird line. I've noticed that Stannard also appeared in Michigan and Wisconsin.

adelejust AT earthlink DOT net
I have always seen his parents listed as John Stannard and Hannah Hanchett. His birthplace is supposed to have been Suffield, CT, so you may want to look for town records for that place. Given name often is spelled Libbeus, and surname sometimes has just one N, so it's a good idea to search all spellings. His line is collateral to my husband's. If I recall correctly, it goes Joseph>Joseph>John>John>Libbeus.

My African-American Beverly Stannard was out of Front Royal, VA. He is listed as a laborer there in the 1880 census. His daughter Lizzie had a son named Howard McReynolds who lived in Washington DC in 1917. Charles Stannard and Charles Stannard JR, son and grandson of Beverly, lived in Washington, DC at various times after 1900. It would be interesting to uncover the link between the white and the African-American Beverly Stannards, as well as the link, if any, among the African-American ones. The name itself hasn't jumped out of VA History to me, but there must be something there.

Nannie, wife of Beverly, was living in Washington, DC, as a widow in the 1920 census. Since there's not a WWI draft registration for Beverly, he may have died before 1917. He seems to have favored the one-N spelling of the surname -- Stanard. I don't find this black Stannard/Stanard family before the 1870 census, but there were whites named Beverly Stannard or Stanard in Spotsylvania Co., VA, earlier, perhaps the family from which former slaves may have chosen their surname or even relatives. You might still be able to find episodes of Who Do You Think You Are? online. Two famous blacks, Emmitt Smith and Spike Lee, were among those whose ancestry professional genealogists researched for the program, so you may find some hints on looking for African-American ancestors there.
You really should mention that you're working on an African-American Stannard/Stanard family. That narrows the field of possible descendants a lot.
I am looking for ties to my great grandfather Baverly Stannard, born in Front Royal, Va about 1852. He was married to Kate in 1880 and so far as I know, had two children, a daughter Lizzie, born about 1877 and a son Charles, born about 1880. Charles, my grandfather, raised his family in Steelton, PA. In 1892, Beverly was a stevedore and traveled between Europe and the US.

I recently came across Major and Adeline and I'd like to know more about them and their children, including their son Beverly.
Would appreciate any information you have

Effie (Stanard/Stannard) Lakin's parents appear to have been Martin S. Stanard (one N except 1860 census) and Jane. Martin was a wagon maker in Lee Co., IL, both before and after the Civil War, and it looks like he died in Chicago in 1922, possibly same year and place as Effie. You can find more at IL State Archives Databases (http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/databases.ht...). Unfortunately, statewide death index isn't complete statewide. Since Martin S. Stanard received a pension on his Civil War service, it probably would be worth your while to obtain the file from Natl Archives (www.Archives.gov), $75 for a complete file. Information you need to file is in the Adjutant General's report at the IL Archives site.

I'm trying to find anything about the family/ancestors of Effie E. Stanard (also found spelled Effa Stanard or Effie Stannard). She was born in 1860 in Amboy, Lee County, Illinois. She married Lovell Henry Lakin (also found as Henry Lovell Lakin) in 1880. They had three children; Blanche, Martin & Herbert. Blanche is my ancestor. Effie died in 1920 in Illinois. It sounds like she lived most of her life in Bureau County, Illinois. I think she's buried with other Lakins in Peru, Illinois.

I've found a bunch of information about her decendants and her husband's ancestors, but I haven't found much about her direct ancestors or siblings. All we have is two pictures of her mother, but we don't even know her mom's name.

Thanks for anything!

No, I am not connected to any of the VA Stannards, black or white, that I know of. I was just trying to provide a little more information (approximate birth dates, ethnicity) that might help others identify the people you were asking about. My husband's Stannard line is documented to Joseph Stannard/Stanard, one of the proprietors of Haddam, CT, and founder of the family that spread from there in the 1600s.

There really are no "wrong" spellings of surnames. I have ancestors whose names were spelled several different ways in the same document. I see Lawrence still was in Spotsylvania Co., VA, when he completed his WWI draft registration and that he tended to sign his given name as "Larance." That county might be the best place to search for marriages of his sisters so you would know what surnames you might find them under. Good hunting!

These are African-American Stannards -- appear in censuses from 1870 on. In 1870 there was a Major Stannard, b. abt 1812, in the same locale. In 1900 census, Adeline says she was mother of 20 children with 11 still living at that time. Here's the list I reconstructed by looking at 1870-1900 censuses: Nellie/Cornelia, b. abt 1865; Fanny, b. abt 1868 (but not in home in 1870); Julia, b. abt 1870; Beverly (male), b. abt 1873; Lawrence, b. abt 1875; Maria, b. abt 1878; Essie, b. Dec 1879; Charlotte, b. abt 1884; Major, b. abt 1886; John H., b. abt 1893; Addie, b. abt 1894. That makes the same 11 you have. I think you can assume longer than usual gaps between living children mark the births and early deaths of those who did not live long enough to appear in one of the censuses. In addition to searching for STANNARD and STANARD, also look for members of this family as STANDARD, a very common misspelling if the name is pronounced as our family does (white in a line from CT>NY state>points west). Also, it appears Major, Sr., may have been enumerated as STANLEY in 1910. His birthdate jumps around from ca. 1838-1843.

Well, I believe My Eliakim's parents were Eliakim Sr 1752-1838 born in Saybrook CT and died in Greene County NY and his wife Bethia Kelsey 1759-1827 and they had children Olive 1783, my Eliakim 1786 and Cynthia 1796. Perhaps your Ezra was a cousin. Eliakim Sr. had quite a few siblings and perhaps one of them was Ezra's parent. There seem to have been a lot of Stannards in CT at that time. I have the grandparents of my Eliakim as Josiah Stannard 1712-1791 and his wife Mindwell Jemimah Post 1714-1805. Now, I am not a professional reseracher so I could have something wrong here. Hope this helps you with your research.

If Eliakim Stannard was born in Connecticut in 1786 but died on 31 March 1871 in Atwater, Portage County, Ohio at 85 years old, he was probably the younger brother of EZRA STANNARD, b.c. 1783 also in CT who m.
I can't remember if I have posted this in reply to another thread. I believe it may have been you who posted a letter from Frank Stannard that was helpful to me in making this deduction because it said that Frank's father came from Portage County Ohio. I believe Edward Mather Stannard's father to have been Eliakim Stannard who was born in Connecticut in 1786 but died on 31 March 1871 in Atwater, Portage County, Ohio at 85 years old. He can be found in the 1850 census there. I believe I have a photograph of him that was passed down in my family. It simply says grandfather Stannard on the back but Edward Mather Stannard (my grandfather Melchert's father) did not live long enough to be the gentleman in the photograph so from that and the clothing it must be his father. More searching online leads me to conclude that His mother, Bethiah Kelsey, was born 25 Mar 1759 in Killingworth and she married Eliakim Stannard, Sr. of Durham, Connecticut. According to Men of Greene County in the Revolution, a history compiled by Olive N. Woodsworth of the Durham Center Museum, he was born August 31, 1752 in CT and he died June 28, 1837 or 1838. He settled in Wright Street, Durham in the 1780's. He was a soldier of the Revolution and captain (another book lists him as a sergeant) in a company of light infantry. Married Bethiah Kelsey of Connecticut. They had nine children, among them Silas and Lyman. (Beer's History of Greene County, pg 264, 287) He and his wife are buried in the Stannard Family Cemetery, located on Rte. 67, formerly Wright Street, in Town of Durham. In a field, west of a red barn on private property, where it indicates he died in 1838 - SH. Bethiah Kelsey died 16 Aug 1827. She is also buried there in CT although some sources say they died in Greene County, NY. If you would like to have a digital copy of the photo, we could correspond via e-mail -
juliagriffith@msn.com

Harry and Florence married late in life, and Frank D. Stannard was their only child according to Florence's 1941 obit (available on Ancestry.com). Frank D. Stannard's obit appeared in CHICAGO TRIBUNE on 16 Sep 1989 and reads, "A memorial service for Frank D.
Stannard, 70, a retired loan officer of the 1st National Bank of Chicago, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Union Church of Hinsdale, Garfield Avenue and 3d Street, Hinsdale.
I looked at the census page, and this 5-year-old child is listed as "temporary ward," not as a companion. You might need to check court records for the locality to see how she came to be living in that household. Adults in the household were b. NC, while child was b. FL.

I am looking for information on Evangeline Marie Stannard, daughter of W.M. Stannard - died in Lee County, FL in 1921, supposedly of typhoid. 1920 census states she was a "companion" of the Wade family.

I'm glad to have helped you with Lydia. Maybe we can work together to uncover Giles' parentage. I'm pretty sure if we can uncover his parents we can work back further. I know Giles and Lydia had quite a few children but only a few lived past childhood. Frank, Martha, Mina and perhaps Hattie.

Family home is on Stannard Rd off Jerusalem Hill road, but it is no longer in the family. It is a couple of miles from Greatsinger cemetery.

I'd like to correspond directly. I guess we are distant cousins and we never knew many relatives on my dad's side.

I'm Fran, named after Frank.
