my dads name was George samuel stapley his fathers name was
Floyd stapley from Toronto Ontario.
I have a half sister. name charlotte, who also has a brother. name charles I think also from toronto.
my mother and their mothers name was Isabell stuffles.
dads brother, name was Gordon stapley. but I dont know if he had any kids or a wife. he has been passed away for many years now. I also live in Belleville, Ontario

OK, I'm responding in bits......

For starters, I'd suggest that Edward's online-interpreted age is "23" rather than "33". Look at the number closely (picture it without the line struck through it) & compare with other "2"s on the page......I'm certain it's "23". Which thus makes his birth year 1858 (not 1848).

Also, I agree that the birthplace certainly looks like it's "Floston", comparing all other letters on the page......but, I've still not found it existing (but maybe I need to look at Ordnance Survey maps instead of large maps).

I'm continuing looking at this. In the meantime, what do you already "know" for certain about your ancestry going back towards Edward?

It was on the 18881 Census. Floston is in the Folkestone area near Sandgate, does that help

I researching Edward Stapley Born 1848 Floston Kent England. His fathers name was Charles Stapley. He Married Sarah Gibbens Mummery in 1882. I cannot trace his Birth. His Father name on his marriage certificate is Charles, I believe his mother's name was Sarah!
Can anybody help in regards to his birth certificate?

Looking for anyone working on these families. They left Frant, Sussex and Pembury, Kent just across the shire line and came to Polo,Ogle, Illinois via Upper Canada which they left (most of them) just ahead of the Canadian law for trying to foment a rebellion against the Crown! Setled in Il in what was known then as Canada Settlement. Became Buffalo Grove, IL and then descendants went to Polo and thence to Belmond. Wright, IA. Anyone working on these families?

Kirstie, based on your grandmother's death in 2005/6, there are a couple of possible births around the 1920's. But without more information these would be guesswork.

My advice would be to start by getting a copy of her death certificate. If you or any of the family don't have it, you can apply for a copy from the Victoria Ministry of Justice. Have a look at their requirements at this web address:

Australian certificates include quite a lot of information, so once you have that research should get easier.

Firstly: my Grandmother's grandmother was Ada Stapley, daughter of a Lord and Lady Stapley and cant find out there names as cant find out any information on the them (maybe Henry??)

I have been researching Sunbridge Wells and think my Grandmother made a mistake here as I think she meant Tunbridge wells.

My Grandmother (granddaughter of Ada) died in Melbourne Oct 14 2005 or 06. I have no information regarding the death of Ada (married Archibald Evan William Jackson.

I am only a beginner in the research of family history. So any help would be fantastic.

Kirstie, there is a lot of Stapley research, so perhaps we can help you. Could you clarify a couple of things though, and parhaps add a few dates and places, even if only approximate.

1 - You say "... my grandmother (Ngara Margaret Jackson) was Ada Stapley". Are you saying she changed her name, or what?
2 - "... on the road to Sunbridge Wells". Is that your typo, or exactly what you meant to say? I wonder of it should be "on the road to Tunbridge Wells"?
3 - When and where did your grandmother die, and do you ahve any idea of her age then?

I am also reasearching my family history. Apparently my grandmother (Ngara Margaret Jackson) was Ada Stapley, daughter of a Lord and Lady Stapley who lived on their estate "on the road to Sunbridge Wells" Ada and her brother were the only children and the brother was killed when he fell from his pony. A Charles Stapley inherited the title on the death of my great great grandfather.

Their property was later sold to the physician that attended King George V.

If this is the same Stapley family I would love more information on Ada and her ancestory as my grandmother died leaving very sketchy information and I am trying to put the pieces together.

Not much. I have his parents as Henry Stapley Born 1782 in Wadhurst and his mum as Frances Manktelow born 1782 in Wadhurst. Beyond that all I have is details of Frances' parents who were Thomas Manktelow born 1740 in Wadhurst, died 1817 and his wife Frances Buss born 1759. He had another wife Mary Styles, but Frances Buss was the mother of Frances Manktelow.

I got this information from a family tree on Ancestry.

Hi, don't know if you are still looking into this but my ancestor was an Alfred Stapley born Wadhurst 1808. He moved to Gravesend where the Stapley family settled and still live. My Alfred married a Mary (Kemp I believe). Is this who you are looking for and what information can I help you with.

John married Louisa Harrison. They and their children can be found in Headley Hampshire 1851 England Census. 1871 Census John and Louisa are in Shalford Surrey.

I am investigating members of my family, one of whom was Henry Stapley, possibly known as Harry, who was born in England about 1849, +/- 10 yrs. He married Annie Hopkins in Canada, either on or just after landing from their boat, and had five children, the eldest of whom was my father, John Stapley. After being blown 75 feet into the air by the explosion of a gas pocket in a well on his farm, near Geneseo, N.Y., Myron N. Stapley, fifty seven years old, plunged to the bottom of the 40-foot well and was instantly killed."

I have a feeling your Elsie Elizabeth Stapley is not related to my line, but I do have an Elsie in my line (but no mention of a middle-name so far), so I'd just like to double-check.

I am the Great Grand Daughter of a Harry Stapley. I believe he was born in April 1883. He was a Headmaster and played football for Westham and England. His brother was William Stapley - Although I now nothing about him. Does this help at all? Are these the same Harry and William you are looking for?

I guess it is possible that our two Alfreds are one and the same . My alfred lived in Gravesend from 1841 census through 1891 when he died - did any of your Stapley's and up in Gravesend ?.

It is possible that one of the children of Henry Stapley could have been the father of your person but as I haven't looked into children of children yet I don't know. I have an Alfred born 1808 Wadhurst to Henry and Frances Stapley my gggg grand parents. Their son Charles is my ggg grandfather. He was born Ticehurst 1815 married Jane Sparkes and died 1878 in Waterloo.Don't know anything else about the Alfred born to them. Don't have an Eliza anywhere

Sorry James, I thought your original query implied that George and Dorothy married around 1900.

From her death registration in 1975 we can see Dorothy (actually Dorothy Alice) was born 11 May 1905. (Ref Dover district, 16/1222 Mar qtr 1975)
That is confirned by the birth registration:
Births Jun 1905 STAPLEY Dorothy Alice Dartford 2a 632

You now need the birth certificate (order online from www.gro.gov.uk using these references) to confirm who her father was (and his occupation).
There is a good chance that will lead you to this marriage:
Marriages Jun 1901: STAPLEY James & TOWNSEND Rose Annie Dartford 2a 1064

George's birth registration looks to be this one:
Births Mar 1905 FREEMAN-HORNE George C Dartford 2a 591

George & Dorothy's marriage is ref:
Dartford district, 2a/1597, Jun qtr 1928

I've been looking for my 'original source' but no luck yet.

This George (George is a very busy name in that family) was the son of Robert and Editha who also had at least 7 other children, George being the 3rd. The youngest was born 1915, the eldest, Ivy married in 1921.

George:- 1905? - 1979
Dorothy:- 1906—1975

This may not help Greg with his thread.

Do you have any other supporting facts? I've had a thorough search and can't see any marriage in the 1890-1910 period that would be likely to match any combination of those names.

Whats the basis of your belief they married at that time and place? Events for either person before or after their marriage might help narrow things down.

Would you by any chance have a Dorothy tucked in there somewhere? I have one who married around Dartford area to a man named George Freeman-Horne, though he may have just used Horne or at a stretch, Freeman. This would have been around the early 1900s +/-.
