Hi Judith
My name is David Stares and interested in our family background as well .As you know the name has been spelled in a number of ways ,the most popular being Stares/Stairs.We are members of the Atlantic version of the clan coming from Newfoundland and thence to central Canada (St Catharines)Ontario. As far as I know our common ancestors were on a British Man o'War which landed in St John's Nfld in the mid 1700s.We cannot follow their line before that as they sought to hide from the British Navy who took a dim view of deserters.
From there the family spread out to the other provinces and the eastern US seaboard within the first generation.
We have some reason to believe that they came from the Portsmouth area which would tie in to the Naval connection. My wife and I have found a family plot in New Forest where there are three spellings of the name.(Stares /Stairs/Stare.
Interestingly enough a certain Joseph Stares led the opposition to the Canadian Federation in the mid 1800s.
All of our side of the crew was somehow involved in ownership of schooners or working on them and I have many stories to relate as told by my Grandmother including a connection to the Stares in Australia (Melbourn)
Hope to hear from you----------David A Stares

Hi I have searched all through the ships records between UK and Cda and found many of the NS and NB Stairs family traveling to England. There were a few traveling to Ireland, but by far the majority crossed the pond to England. I suspect the roots came from there. I am keen to make a connection and have research back extensively in the Beds and Bucks area. Now need to work on the southern Stairs families. Hugs Judith

Julie, I was wondering if you have found any connection of your Stares line to the Stares/Stairs just north of London? My roots are Beds and Bucks and I know some relatives headed south to London and your area. Can we share? Hugs Judith

Kevin,
I wonder if you may be able to help me.

I am researching the Wiseman family of Ringwood, Hants.
In my search I came across a James J Wiseman, son of Peter and Elizabeth (Knight), who married Susannah Stares at the Anglican Church of St. John the Baptist in 1829. They moved to New Jersey and had three children, Frederick, Julia, and Sophia. Both JJ and Susannah are buried there in New Jersey.
Susannah's parents were William and (unknown) Stares, who lived at Blockmaker's Hall in St. John's, Nfld. Have you or any one you know of researched this family, particularly the Wiseman side of that marriage. Who were Peter and James J and where did they come from???
We would appreciate any help.
Everett

Celia
Don't know if you're still researching Stares, just linked your messages in with some information that I have. No connection with my line as far as I know.
I have your James & Elizabeth on 1881 census, which I guess you have already, let me know if you don't.
I also have Crofton parish records as follows for their children..
agnes kate stares	bapt	1874
agnes kate stares	bur	1875
albert john stares	bapt	1882
bertie stares	bapt	1872
ellen louisa stares	bapt	1879
ellen louisa stares	mar	1899 to harry tauswell
harriett ann stares	bapt	1876
isabelle stares	bapt	1870
james william stares	bapt	1863
walter stares	bapt	1864
Family res in Melville Lane 1863, James' occupation given as labourer or thatcher.
I believe from some early work that I did, when I thought there was a connection with this line, that Walter and Ada Hutchins had at least 3 children; Stanley William Stares 1911, Leslie J Stares 1914, Maurice J Stares 1916.
Please let me know if you can add any extra information - or correct anything!
