Thank you so much for your reply. You say he might have been Rachel McBroom's nephew. Is this just speculation or do you have a hint of that? Is there anything to indicate that Manessa might have had a child before marriage to Peter A.?
Just trying to find any lead.

Thanks,
Wayne

None of Bazil R. Starnes sisters married a Smith, but he may have been Rachel McBroom's nephew. Bazil R.'s brother. Peter A. married Manessa Smith. Manessa was the daughter of a James Smith. Hope this helps. L. Hayes

Bazil Roden Starnes married Rachel McBroom. I the 1850 census they had a 17yr old Albert Smith (my GG Grandfather) in there household. Rumor in my family is that Bazil was his uncle. Can you shed any light on this?

Thanks Wayne Smith wsmith5@tds.net

My grandfather, Leonard Starnes who was born 1886 was the brother of Dock Starnes. Several of the siblings migrated to Florida. They were the children of Daniel and Mary Starnes. Roxanna Starnes Laney stayed there, and I've connected to a cousin who knows her line. Daniel was a Civil War veteran who lived until 1932, and my mother remembered him. He told her one dramatic story about the war, and his military records showed the accuracy of that memory.
Jenny, if your grandfather James Starnes had any sons, you should do a male/paternal line DNA test on one of them, or if none of the sons are living, but they in turn had sons, you could also test one of them. Called a Y-DNA STR (short tandem repeat) test.

There is a Starnes Surname DNA Project at Family Tree DNA that currently has 45 in it. A 37 marker test is a good way to start, and cheaper if order from the project page. If he was a Starnes, he'd match other Starnes men in the project. If not a Starnes, there's a good chance that you'd be able to match his DNA to what his male line really is, as they have about 221,000 men in their database so far, and growing by thousands a year. My adopted brother found his birth father's surname this way!

No, I do not have a death date for her. I just made the connection between Francis Jane and my Harrison B. Smith (as brother and sister) just a few months ago. What got me looking at Francis was a tidbit that I had written down many years ago, where a family member had said that Harrison B. was "raised by a Starnes family". I could not figure that one out until I started connecting the families and then I figured out that Francis was his sister. The Tipton County, Tennessee connection is very strong also as Harrison B.'s sons also lived in Tipton Co. and I also have another connection with my Taylor line living on Island 35.

Debbie, you are a miracle! Finally, we have Francis Jane's maiden name and parents' names! Thank you so much!

As I mentioned previously, Ebenezer Starnes and Francis Jane named their only daughter (or surviving daughter) Lodesta, also seen as Lodie, and as Lola on her death certificate (widow of Joe Pennel) in Memphis.

Do you have a death date for Francis Jane? Have been unable to find any info on her, past the 1900 census in Reverie, Tipton Co.

Besides the commonality of the name, this may explain why I see Smith in my DNA matches' surname lists at 23andMe and FTDNA's Family Finder so often!

Francis Jane was the sister of my direct ancestor, Harrison B. Smith. The Smith family was in the 1850 Independence Co., Arkansas census and were in Mississippi Co., Arkansas in 1860.

My great-grandfather, George Washington Starnes, a son of Ebenezer H. (Henry?) Starnes and Frances/Francis Jane, maiden name unknown, was born 1867 in Mississippi Co., Arkansas - married Dicy or Dicey Stroud in 1895 in Tipton Co., they lived on Island 35 (Reverie area) of Tipton County, TN and had 3 children, Cammie Dale Starnes 1896 (married Thomas J. Wever or Weaver and Luther Lee Oliver Fletcher), Wesley Earl Starnes 1897, and my grandfather, James Dewey Starnes 1903.

Dicy died in 1903 and George Washington about 1907, so the 3 children were parcelled out to their Uncle William H. (Henry?) Starnes and raised by him on Island 35.

I'm glad to finally know that I'm part of the English Sternes (Stearns, Starnes in US) line, as opposed to the German Staring (Starnes) line, both of which are well represented in the Southern states.

I've got a request in to some of the Starnes men descended from Wesley Earl Starnes (James Dewey Starnes "daughtered out", had no sons) to do a Y-DNA STR paternal line test and join the Starnes Surname DNA Project at Family Tree DNA (FTDNA.com) - that will be the final proof of our connectivity to the Ebenezer Starnes line!

Ebenezer H. (Henry?) Their Starnes descendants lived in Munford and other areas of Tipton Co., and Memphis City and Shelby County. Darn, that's too bad your book doesn't list Ebenezer!
I have a Starnes book written by Jessie Ruth Starnes Russell and checked for the names you have listed. My family, Moses Starnes lived in Tipton County,Tennessee. Your Ebenezer was not listed with his family. Moses had a brother, John and I don't find his name with that family. Ebenezer is a very old given name in the Starnes line. Have done a great deal of research on this family surname. If you will send me any additional information, I'll try again to see what I can find.

Mollie in Missouri

In the Starnes family book: Of Them That Left a Name Behind" by Herman Starnes and H. Gerald Starnes, pg. 127-128 at Boonesborough, KY, they give a two page description with photos and references of the battle at "Starnes'Defeat: 1779. "Those named are Frederick Starnes, Joseph Starnes (Sr.), Michael Moyer (their brother-in-law). In Joseph Starnes'(Jr.) statement sworn at the time of his application for R.S. pension, that he made his escape through the creek through the cane(which was still growing there in 1979 on the south bank 250 years later). This area is just above the Central Kentucky Wildlife Dam and down the slope from the west end of the Pilot Knob Cemetery. Since old cemeteries tend to be located on the sites of the earliest known burial, Col. Whitley buried the Starnes there on the knoll, jost off the Wilderness Trail."

Hi Kathy,

It never occurred to me that she may possibly have divorced James Chitwood. I wouldn't have thought so, but that's certainly another angle for me to check into. If she did divorce him, she left the children with him because they were listed in the 1870 census as living with him and his second wife.

Thanks so much!

Arry Starnes Chitwood - GEORGIA

My 2nd great-grandmother, Arry STARNES, married James E. Chitwood, in Hall Co, GA on 15 Jul 1849. They were living in Hall County with infant Robert Calvin Chitwood (my great grandfather) when 1850 census was done and she was 20 years old. They lived next to a William Starnes and wife "P" Starnes. I suspect that was her parents.

Her name could be spelled Arrie or another varation of Arry. She and James had several other children, but on 6 MAR 1867, he married Rhoda L Maxwell (widow of Allen Henson) in Bartow County. James E, Robert C, and Rhoda are buried at Emerson Cemetery in Bartow County. I would like to know what happened to Arry.

Seeking death date, burial place, parents or any information on Arry Starnes. Any info greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I have a copy of Daniel's will naming your ancestor Thomas P and all of the other children. My interest is in his daughter, Susannah Mariah. I believe she married Greenberry Walter Bates in 1848 and raised her family in Paulding County until about 1865 when she and the children moved to Missouri. Her first child, a son named William Daniel, is my husbands' great grandfather. We have searched for years to learn the story of what happened to her. Did your family ever hear about this sister? Her inheritance was left in the care of Thomas P. We believe she was already dead by that time. I sincerely hope you can help. Thank you, Glynda Bates

Re: Solomon Starnes, Rufus Starnes

My Grandfather was George Cleveland Shue, born Stanley Co NC 1889 to Rena Starnes and Will Shue. Rena is said to have born two illigitimate children, fathered by Daniel Blackwelder. They were: Clara Bell Blackwelder, born 1880-82, who married Titus Honecutt and Anna Blackwelder, born 1882-83, who married Robert Johnson.

Family lore has it that we are in part Native American through Rena Starnes Shue. Is this the same Rena Starnes mentioned in this thread, daughter and granddaughter of Solomon and Rufus? Any additional information would be greatly appreciated!
