"TRAIN ROBBERS CONVICTED
Starr, Wilson and Chaney to Get the Full Penalty of the Law

Fort Smith, Ark. Oct. 28--In the United States court Henry Starr, John
Wilson and Alf Chaney were convicted of the robbery of a Missouri, Kansas
& Texas train at Pryor Creek, I. T. The robbery was committed at 8 o'clock
on the night of May 2, 1893. There were fifteen counts in the indictment
and the jury convicted the prisoners on six. There were a large number of
witnesses and nearly every one identified Wilson and Starr, though only a
few had seen Chaney well enough to identify him. The attorneys for Starr
and Wilson early gave up the hope of saving them, but the fought hard to
keep down the number of counts on which there should be a conviction. A
hard fight was made to clear Alf Chaney. "Kid" Wilson took the stand during
the trial and said that the robbery was committed by himself, Starr, Frank
Chaney, Jim Wilson (the Kid's brother) and two others, whom he knew only as
Bill and Jack, and that Alf Chaney had nothing to do with it. Frank Chaney
and the other two members of the gang are at large. Judge Parker will give
them the full extent of the law."

The NYT July 4, 1893 has a newspaper article about Starr and Kid Wilson's arrest. Kid Wilson was supposedly in on the bank robbery with Starr at Amity, CO in 1908, but Starr was captured in AZ and Wilson disappeared.

Does your book give the burial location for Hannah McWilliams Starr, who was John Wesley Starr's wife and Moses Fletcher Starr's mother? She died 19 Jan 1838 in Ohio, probably in Morgan County.

My Grandmother Daughter of John W. Starr, Jessie Gertrude Starr was born in San Diego Ca. Her Father was from Texas. his family lived in Missouri and originaly came from Tennessee. John's Fathers name was Jackson Starr and his mother was Clara I believe.

Tom Francis Starr is my Dad. He was born August 7, 1925 and died in December of 1982. He is laid to rest in Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, CA. To answer your question, Maudie Mae 'Tucker' was 'our' grandmother's name when she died in 1963. She and my Grandfather, Joseph had divorced and Maudie married, 'Mr. Tucker'. Yes, her name was Maudie Mae Mclane.
May I ask which one of my 'uncles' was your father?
You see, I am also a Barbara. Barbara A Starr, first daughter of Tom Francis Starr.

In order that I don't have to wait until I go to California in June or when the publication comes out in August, would it be possible for you to email me a copy (which I am also anxious to share with my uncle)?
In addition, I am also very interested in the Starr DNA Project. Unfortunately, we only have two males left in the family who are directly descended - Robert and Alan. Mary Gillen (Gielen) married John B. Stas in June 1902.
They had children:
John P (abt 1904), Virginia C (abt 1906), Francis C (abt 1908), Gertrude A. (abt 1911), James B (abt 1913), Catherine C (abt 1916), Thomas W (abt 1919), & Madeline (abt 1922).
Spelling may vary.

Many records I have read has Alden Starr (1829 - 1910) Shows him as though he died in several locations, Those are St, Clair county Illinois, Redbud, Randolph County, Illinois. These are actually incorrect. My information comes from his death certificate. Alden Starr died in Venice, Madison County, Illinois on May 30, 1910. He was at the home of Charles Aldon Starr his son. Some confusion probably has been brought about be the fact that the 1910 census taken in April, at least prior to May 30, and it had him in Red Bud, Randolph County, Illinois. This probably brought others to the conclusion as that being where he died. The reason why he was at his son's house can be debated. Was he just visiting or had he just moved there maybe due to sickness. The record does say the cause of death was chronic broncitis. He was buried in Red Bud, Illinois and could be another reason for error as assuming that he actually died in Red Bud.

Long shot, but I am looking for a John Starrs who was in Omaha in 1880, married to Clara and with children Minna, George, Chrasan?, Oscar & Isabelle.

This Starrs family was from Belgium, and I believe may have spelled the name STAS in Belgium.

My Croughs (Crouch) family was related to the STAS family in Vliermaal, Limburg, Belgium and also immigrated to Omaha, Nebraska about 1880.

Their marriage record has their ages, but Nancy Jane lied. She was two months shy of 16, if the 8 Mar 1852 birthdate from her tombstone is accurate.

William Drew Starr and (Unknown) (Unknown) were married between 1850 and 1866 in Arkansas (prob). (Unknown) (Unknown)3,4 was born between 1834 and 1850 in Arkansas. She died between 1866 and 1868 in Arkansas (prob).
This lady is William's first wife, probably. I can't find William in 1860. Her son, John C, is living with William and Nancy jane in 1870. He was born two years before they married. That is why I cite the census as a source, not because she is on it.

In 1879 Nancy Jane petitions the court to have her step-son, John, son of William, apprenticed to someone. John shows up in 1880 living with John and Mary Rhea. They have a second orphan, Betti Moore. (Both John and Betti's relation to the head of household is "orphan".

So, probably, William had a son by this lady. She could be his second or even third wife; life was hard on women back then. I haven't found a marriage record, nor a death record.

I estimated her birth year by assuming she was at least 16 when John was born, and wasn't older than William.

Lawrence County Loose Probate Papers has two entires for the Starr family, both on p 167:

Starr, John:
In Feb 1879,Nannie Jane Starr, widow of William Starr, dec'd, asked the court to apprentice (bind out) her 12-year old step-son, John Starr (son of the above William). She said William had been dead since 1876.

That clears up John C, the 3-year old with them in 1870; he is Wiliam's son by a previous wife. It calls Felix Grundy's father into question. He was suppsedly born in 1878, two years after William died. Nancy was 26 in 1878. So, either his father is unknown, or one of the dates - William's death, Felix's birth - is wrong. Probate courts don't get the year wrong very often. Men sometimes get their birth years wrong. Young widows sometimes attract more attention than they want. I'm going to leave Felix as the son of William, but there are questions.

I can't find Nancy in 1880. John Young, "East Families", says she had two children by William who died in the 1870's, based on the borne/living columns in the 1900. I can't find Felix until 1900, when he is working for the Bridges family in Roanoke, Randolph, Virginia.

John may have been a handful, or times may have been tough, or Nancy may have thought her chances of snagging a second husband would be better without him. They got along well enough that John named one of his children "Rhea".

The "Thompson" on the 1870 may have been a false start, or he may have used "William" as a tribute to his father, after his father died around 1878. In any event, he is William in 1900 and on. I can't find any of the family in 1880.

The birth month and year are right, he's close to his home county, his parents' BP's match, and "Starr" is a rare surname. His occupation is "farm laborer", so he either works for Mr. Jarrett, or works for someone else and boards.

Her SSDI says LR was Piggott, Clay, Arkansas. Her husband died in Clay County, according to the Arkansas Death Index. Her husband's Find-a-Grave entry has him born and died in Randolph County. While he may be buried there, the evidence suggests he was born in Lawrence County and died in Clay County. By extension, it looks to me like Clara too is buried in Randolph County - and spent most of her life there - but died in Clay County.

I'm guessing the John who died in St. Louis in 1985 is ours because of the relative rarity of the name and his birth date is close to the census.

Felix's obituary says he was born in Howell County, Missouri to Mr. and Mrs. William Starr. His father is subject to some confusion. See the long note with Nancy Jane (Starr, Crick) for lots of questions with no firm answers.

Nancy Jane East and Thomas Crick married in Lawrence County in 1882, and moved to Howell County sometime afterward, probably. If the kids' birth states and dates are accurate on the 1900:

Felix Grundy Starr, age 79, well known farmer of Delaplaine, died in Randolph County Hospital Friday, (2 Aug 1957). He was born in Howell County, Missouri, May 17, 1878, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Drew Starr. He had been an employee of the state highway department and was engaged in farming for many years.

Funeral services were conducted at the Delaplaine Baptist church at 2:30 Sunday afternoon by Bros. Oren Ring and Alvin Allison. Interment was in Masonic cemetery under the direction of McNabb Funeral home of Pocahontas.

Pallbearers were Woodrow Stacy, Bob Stevens, Ruel Harpole, Ray Gates, James Compton and James Harpole. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Birdie Starr of the home; three sons Clay Starr of Peach Orchard, Russell Starr of Knobel and Adam Starr of Bay City, Texas; a daughter, Mrs. Lena Smith of Knobel two brothers, Jess and Homer Creeke [Crick] of West Plains, Mo; three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Gabert and Mrs. Candy Black of South Fork Mo. and Daisy of Kansas.

Born Dec. 13, 1880, she was a daughter of the late Tom and Emma Halcomb Wells. She is survived by a son Russell Starr of Knobel; a daughter, Mrs. Lena Smith of Corning; a sister, Mrs. Dela Layle of Fayetteville, N. C; a brother, Doc Wells of Memphis; 5 grandchildren; several great grandchildren.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Alvin Allison officiating. Interment was in Masonic Cemetery under direction of McNabb's. Pallbearers were Ruel Harpole, Raymond Kellim, Tom Hall, Ray Carr, David Woods and Lloyd Smith

There is something to this. My Grandfather said the Choctaw woman was an Indian princess. However, how could she be the daughter of a Cherokee Chief if she were Choctaw. My ancestors say she was Choctaw and married John Rogers (which is in question that they were married) who was 1/4 Cherokee.

Could you advise me where to find more info on this Henry Starr of MD and GA line? Our family search ends in Mecklenburg County, NC with John Starr who is buried in the Old Sugaw Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. His tombstone says he died in 1773 at age 48.

Several recent discoveries will interest descendants of Hezekiah Starr and Julia Ann DeShields.

With mixed emotions we're sharing new evidence about Julia Ann DeShields parentage. Over the last two years, we attempted to prove the Dashiell Family Records(DFR)claim that Capt. Benj. Dashiell fathered Julia Ann. To our dismay, we found overwhelming evidence that she was the daughter of Catholic Acadian refugees, Francis and Magdalen DeShields, not Capt. Dashiell. Julia Ann's baptism in the Catholic church was one of many compelling revelations. Ultimately, Mr. Dashiell lacked a few facts when he wrote the DFR back in the 1930s which naturally led to misinterpretations.

Realizing the need to update the story for future generations, we wrote a fully-footnoted paper explaining our findings titled, "A New Identity for Julia Ann DeShields," which is available in the August edition of the Maryland Genealogical Quarterly Journal.

Meanwhile, Hezekiah's DNA is represented in the Starr DNA Project http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/starr/results.
This data confirms that Hezekiah was not related to the "Irish Quaker Starrs" or the "Comfort Starrs," but definitively links him to the well-researched "Henry Starr of MD & GA" line and to a new thread which might lead back to our English roots. Several researchers are working to find the paper trail that defines these DNA connections.

My grandmother was Rebecca Jane Yandell. She was born Oct. 5, 1875 in Scott County AK (Indian Territory. Her father was William "Billy" Yandell and her mother's maiden name is unknown because her parents were full-blooded Chocktaw Indians who died of cold (or consumption)when they were driven out of their homelands up into the colder Arkansas/Oklahoma territory. She, often spoke very favorably of Belle Starr and I see some connections in some of the books and am wondering if there is a relationship??? Does any of this help you? If so, Ihave more info.

I'm also a member of a Starr family in Michigan that goes back to Canada. My GGrandfather was James, from Newport. I can't remember my GGrandmothers name now. I think my sister did some research on the Starr line.

J.L.Starr who is a farmer near the University has placed on exhibition at the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, a sample of Millet, the seed of which was sent him from Texas. The stalks are but 4 feet long and heavily headed. It turns out about 4 tons to the acre and Mr Starr regards in as a most satisfactory fodder for this country. He would like to have some expert tell him what kind of millet it is.

There are Starrs who are part Cherokee indian. They are the descendants of Caleb Starr and Nancy Harlan. Nancy was part Cherokee through her mother Katherine Ka-Ti Kingfisher. Nancy's father was Ellis Harlan. Nancy was born in Tennessee. Caleb Starr was born in Pa, around 1754.

Hi! If you are related to the same Starr's that I am, is there a Hazel (Hardy) Starr in your tree? If so, she is connected to a Betsey Ketchapaw by marriage. Betsey was a Canadian Abenaki.

their daughter Clara Barber married John Hazard
Their son Jay Gordon Hazard married Gladys Hardy
Glady's sister Hazel Hardy married George E Starr through whom I am related to the Starr family and connects the Starrs to this Betsey Ketchapaw.
