Looking for info on Joseph & Isabella Stevalley. They lived in St. Louis, MO in 1880. Dau. Jessie Margaret Stevalley was born in Memphis, TN around 1878. He was a salesman in a clothing store in St. Louis as of the 1880 census. In 1889 city directory, Isabella is shown as being the widow of Joseph.

Both Joseph (abt 1842) and Isabella (btw 1847-1849) were both born in Ireland. His father was born in France and his mother in Ireland. Her father and mother were both born in Scotland.

Trying to find documentation on them other than 1880 census, specifically when they came to the U.S.

Surname spelling came from 1880 census and 1898 St. Louis directory. Family records show Stavelley.

Thomas Staveley, Bermondsey 1920

Hi I'm looking for any relatives/information relating to my grandfather Thomas Staveley....Although when registered at birth he was Thomas Frederick Styles.

His parents as stated on the birth cert are:
Father: Thomas Styles Mother: Ann Styles (formerly Staveley, living at Sards Rents, Bermondsey, St Olave.

My grandad did have brothers and sisters but I am unable to locate any records for them as not sure of names yet! but there has been mentions of a James(jimmy),John, Ann, Eileen who we belive may have changed her name to Amy, Clive and Stuart. It is thought that Ann (the mother) may have died not long after the birth of the last child...but again I have no proof of the family rumour!

On documentation I have found my grandad has stated he was put into St Josephs Orphange at a young age.....

On army documentation I found he was married previously to Iris Hellyer and they had a daughter Linda Elizabeth, in gosport around 1945/46

He then married my gran Gwyneth Jones in 1949, in pontypridd, Wales

My grandad lost all touch with his relatives, and since his death we have completly hit a brick wall trying to find out more....

Would appreciate any help/ knowlege on this!

Thanks for your time

Jane

Hi Janice, So pleased to hear from you, as this family tree has been driving me mad. I'm sorry to say i'm not any relative of yours but i am helping a friend with his next door neighbours tree. As i am a member of ancestry i can get to all the records!! We have been doing the tree together now for about 2 months. We have Thomas's marriage cert to Emily which has given us his fathers name Robert Staveley. I can;t find a marriage for Thomas and Rebecca Rugg as she was the mother of Arthur who is the relative in our direct line. A lady from Genes reunited has been in contact, she beleived Thomas died in the 1940's so i have a death for that time and we are going to send for cert. I had thought that probably his name had been spelt wrong on census etc, and that would explain a lot. If you would like to e-mail me my address is hillersdon@tiscali.co.uk and we compare notes Bye for now Becky

Hi Becky,
Thomas Staveley, born Kingston upon Thames in 1865/6 was my grandfather and I have just sent away for his birth certifi-
cate to find out who his mother was. I believe he was in-
correctly registered as Thomas Stapleton as was his sister
Catherine under Stapley born l862. They could not be found
under the name Staveley. My mother was the first daughter from his second marriage to Emily Newman so I expect you are related through Arthur Robert Butler.
So pleased to hear from you and eagerly await your reply.
I have been chasing Thomas's father, Robert Butler Stavely.
Hope you can help.
Try and not keep me in suspense for too long.
Kindest regards, Janice

Join the Staveley DNA Project!

In an attempt to determine how different Staveley family groups may (or may not) be genetically related, we have launched a Staveley Family DNA project through FamilyTreeDNA.

Our hope is that we may finally be able to answer some questions that have plagued Staveley genealogists for years. Just a few of the questions we hope to answer through this project are:

- Is there a connection between the various large Staveley groups in Yorkshire, England?

- Do the Irish Staveley/Stavely/Stevely lineages connect with the earlier Yorkshire groups, and if so, in which region did they originate?

- Are the Stavelys of Maryland in the US connected to the Staveleys of Westmorland?

- Is there a genetic relationship between the Stavelys of Maryland, and the early Stavelys of Tennessee?

Some time ago on this board the question came up as to whether the Stalvey families in the US may have had origins as Staveleys in Britain, and DNA testing could help to answer this question. The same is true for other variant surnames such as Stabler or Staley.

The more individuals we can test, the more we will learn about the early Staveley origins.

This is a world-wide project, and for more information about the project, or to join the project, please see:

http://www.staveley-genealogy.com/staveleydna.htm

Regards,

Clare M.
