Hi: Sorry it's been about a year in my answering your message. I don't get here a lot these days. Anyway, Delia Bertha Stave or Staves, was born in aobut 1867. She had a twin sister Amelia Mary Stave or Staves. I blieve they were born in Clinton County, NY. Possibly Tupper Lake. Delia married Christopher Cumm and lived in Tupper Lake for a number of years before they moved to Herkimer, where they lived the rest of their lives. Delia had ten childre all to gether but only 4 lived. They were John Cumm, Clara Cumm, who married Frank Lagasse, Dora Bowman and Altena Daly. Amelia married Pete Come and farmed in St. Lawrence Co. NY. They had about nine children. Any info you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks again. John

My great grand mother's brother was a William Staves (son of Frank and Agnes Staves). William Staves and Henry were killed in an automobile accident in Tupper Lake in 1919. I believe they were related by marriage - possibly brothers-in-law. If you think there's a connection, let me know and we can share info.

There is a Delia Staves born 1878 to Francis (Frank) and Agnes (DeVarney) Staves. Delia was the oldest child - a sister Maggie born 1880, brother Frank born 1882, brother William born 1883, sister Sarah born 1885, brother Norman born 1891 and sister Edith born 1893. The entire family was from Altamont, NY aka Tupper Lake, NY. If this is the Delia you are looking for, she would be my great-grandmother's sister. If you think this is she, let me know and I will tell you what I have learned about the Staves family.

I just recently lost my father and in going through his papers found a copy of my grandmother's birth certificate. She was born November 11, 1901 - and her mother's maiden name is listed Margaret Staves (born 1878?)- married to my great grandfather Harold Fanning. I am wondering if there might be a connection.

My entire family is from St. Lawrence County, NY and I am wondering if there is a connection. The birth record was from Tupper Lake.

Cindy Chapman

I have only recently discovered this board and looking at the dates wonder if I am rather too late to reply. As Heather has written there are many of Staves in Lincolnshire. Some did indeed live in Tetford, but if you go back before that they lived in Fulletby, then one family moved to Salmonby, some of whom went to Tetford. Fulletby and Salmonby are two small villages near Tetford. From my trawling of registers and Census details there are two main centres in Lincolnshire, Ludford - from which Heather's Staves descend and Fulletby - from which my husband's family descend. I would love to find out if these two groups are linked. There are smaller groups of Staves in Hampshire and London, but I doubt if they are related, but it is an unusual surname. Is your husband related to the Tetford Staves? Then he is probably related to my husband. Can we compare notes? Does the framed paper give any help?

I hope you are still doing research as I've only just found this board. Thanks for the information that John and Mary Ann had emigrated as I wondered what had happened to them on the census returns. Do you know who John's parents are, because I'm wondering if he is a John christened in Fulletby in 1800 with parents William and Elizabeth. William's father being an ancestor of my husband's. The family are on the 1841 Census, as you probably know, living in Alvingham, Lincolnshire. John must have risen up in the world quickly as he is only an agricultural labourer on that census and definitely not a farmer, like the rest of the Staves in Lincolnshire.

Hi, my husband is another Staves in England. I have only recently discovered this board and looking at the dates wonder if I am rather too late to reply. If you come from the Lincolnshire Staves then you may be related to my husband, his family originate in Fulletby and I've got back to 1749. Except none of them have been land owners so you are probably not related, they are usually listed as agricultural labourers. I would love to know how you've found out the Scandanavian link and how it fits in with the Lincolnshire Staves. Also is it possible to see your distant relative's information please.

I've only just found these questions, so by now you probably have answers. In case you haven't as Heather comments John Staves married Rebecca Medley and one of their 7 children was called Thomas Medley, born in Tealby, Lincolnshire in 1859. Thomas married Ellen Good in 1885 and had at least 7 children I know of.

Edward being born in Hull, East Yorkshire, and his father being named Arthur Wilbert too. Not sure about the Arthur aged 30, Edward had an older brother Arthur, but he would be around 40 in 1930.

D. Fowler, and they were busy at their home in this village that afternoon and evening receiving the congratulations of their many friends. Mr. Fowler recalls that the wedding day was cold, 20 below zero that morning, and January had covered the earth with a mantle of snow said to have been forty-two inches on the level. Another snow storm a couple days before the happy event and a strong wind added to the difficulties of the minister and wedding party going places. In fact, it was almost impossible to get anywhere. Highways were abandoned and the bobsleighs were driven through the fields and anywhere that a road could be made. But when folks are young and there is to be a wedding, a heap of difficulties can be overcome. Mr. and Mrs. Fowler enjoyed this last anniversary greatly. One of the surprises was a fine wedding cake produced as if by magic, and other dainties were added. A host of friends are hoping that there may be many more wedding anniversaries for them.

I don't really know exactly what information everyone wants, but I will put my $.02 of what I know from being married to a Staves.
From what I know, the Staves name originated in England, specifically from a little town called Tetford. We visited just about 2 months ago, saw a Staves gravestone at one of the old church graveyards even. My husbands dad actually has a framed paper that talks about the origin of the name but I don't remember what it said unfortunately. I do know from what they have told me that all the Staves originally came from this town called Tetford in northern england and the name is very uncommon so just about everyone with Staves in their name is related to each other. Hope this helps. :)

I forgot to mention that someone in his family recently did a genealogy paper from the very first Staves known down to today. It included where they are, what kids they had etc... but we don't have a copy of it yet. I wonder if any of you are on there! I might be the answer to your search! When we do get a copy I will shate with anyone who likes! Also, there are a few Staves in Australia.

Percy Staves was married at the time of his death ,He was 47 years old ( I beleive his age is wrong because I have his Birth Reg and it says 1875) He was a laborer , His parents are Joseph Staves born USA and Sophia Sutton born (it says Sault St Marie but she was born at the Credit Mission) He was identified as Indian for his nativity, His brotherinlaw Alfred Morgan who was married to his sister Catherine M Staves was the informant. I think he died of an heart ailment in the hospital. He is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Brantford section K ,row 14 ,marker #34. There is no tomb stone .He died Oct 22 1927 in Brantford.
Susan Staves Schank
susan.schank@sympatico.ca

Dorothy,

Iread your message on the Staves surname board. William Staves of Kingston, WI is my great great grandfather. His daughter Mary Emma married Cady Dexter Fowler. Their son Dudley Orlie Fowler married Gladys Mary Crump. Their daughter Barbara was my mother.

I have a copy of William Staves pension files, which I would gladly share, but not his service record. I have spotty records of the time this family was in Kingston, and next to nothing from before. (A great deal more recent, of course.) I would be delighted if you would share with me any information I don't have, and will reciprocate as best I can.

Sincerely,

Greg Graham
