You can do an internet search for The Stebbins Genealogy by Ralph Stebbins Greenlee. The book can be read on line or downloaded to your computer. This link should work:

http://archive.org/details/stebbinsgenealog01ingree

If not, just google it. I suggest going to the index that I think is in the back and look for whatever name. It is a two volume book so perhaps the index is at the end of the second volume---I do not recall off-hand.

I received your message and I am thrilled to know that this could be a real connection, and what that connection could be. I'll have to dig out what info I had gathered years ago regarding this. I didn't include with my family tree info, since I couldn't definitively be sure. I'm giving my email address here, as I'm getting off Ancestry.com for a bit...phassp@tds.net. I have not heard of any weaving connection, with the exception of Mary's oldest grandson, Howard Stebbins, working in the United Woolen Mills in Parkersburg from 1914-1917[from City Directories]. Thank You for contacting me, and perfect timing, as my subcription ends tomorrow!

Dear Researcher:

Thomas T. and Caroline LE ROW DAVIDSON indeed lived in Otsego, Otsego, NY.

Thomas was the son of Titus B. Davidson, who was the eldest son of Archibald Davidson, a very famous coverlet weaver who had a 'factory' in Ithaca, NY in the 1830s-1850s. Titus married Nancy Taylor before 1830 in Ithaca, and they lived for some years there before moving to Otsego prior to 1850. Their eldest son was Thomas T. Davidson.

Thomas T. Davidson married Caroline Le Rew on 24 Jan 1850 in Otsego. Born on 16 Dec 1820, Caroline was a daughter of Alexander Le Row and Mercy Pack (I believe it should be 'Peck' as there are several Peck families in Otsego at that time). They had two sons; Clarence E. who was born on 1 July 1853 and Edgar, who was born 19 September 1858, both in Parkersburg, Wood, Virginia (there was no WV yet).

FYI - citing the 1850 census I see that you have Thomas T and Caroline 'Davison' (some census documents have it that way, but the family spelled it 'Davidson' and the surname is shown as such woven into the famous Davidson coverlets).

I have not pulled up the 1850 census document yet but if you have Mary living in the Thomas and Caroline household, she must have been living with her sister. How interesting that both households moved on to Parkersburg, WV. I believe that Titus worked as a weaver for at least some years in Ithaca. Then, like many other weavers in NY and PA, there was too much competition from other skilled weavers and from European machine-made coverlets that easily were brought in from NYC and then up the Erie Canal. They began to move west to find new opportunities.

Archibald Davidson and several of his sons moved to Warsaw, Wyoming, NY, where Archibald died. Most of his sons there became carpenters. Titus was alone in moving to Otsego, which is in the opposite direction of the road (canal) to Warsaw.

So, Thomas T and his Le Rew bride and Samuel Stebbins and his Le Rew bride moved at around the same time to Parkersburg, WV.... Have you ever heard of a weaving connection in the Stebbin family? I just looked up the name in the book, American Coverlets and Their Weavers and I don't see any names that come close. I have Thomas and his family arriving in Parkersburg in 1853. And you have Mary and Samuel marrying in 1855 and then getting to Parkersburg in the 1860s.

I'm still doing a lot of Davidson research. I hope this message gets to you and I look forward to your reply.

Regards,

cccody

Sorry for delayed response--have been away. I know of no close relationship between your Charles Stebbins and the Horace Stebbins named in my original post. Horace was one of 13 children of John and Sarah Sanderson Stebbins and there is no Charles in that family (according to The Stebbins Genealogy by Greenlee.). In my research I have found many Stebbins in Michigan including Van Buren Co. They are all cousins of some sort I would believe!

He had two children, Hattie (Harriot) born in 1840 in Pennsylvania and Charles born in Boston MA in 1841. Hattie and her husband J.D. Sperry (John) moved to South Haven Van Buren Michigan where she died in 1913. Charles Sr. moved to Richland County Wisconsin in 1854.

Schuyler Colfax Stebbins, 84.son of,Albert Mead and Joyce (nee Jackson) Stebbins of Stebbins Road in Silver Creek, NY,

Schuyler Colfax Stebbins,
loving family man and community leader and servant,
died March 18, 2011 at the age of 84.
The Cornell-educated grape farmer from Silver Creek, NY is survived by his wife Anne Shirley (nee Russell) Stebbins, six sons - Russell Stebbins, John David Stebbins, Douglas Stebbins, Peter Stebbins and his wife Meg, Mark Stebbins and his wife Lisa, and Michael Stebbins and Robert Harp - and seven grandchildren Laura, Matt, Chris, Nick, Emily, Sarah and Riley Stebbins.
Sky was born July 1, 1926 .
as the only child of Albert Mead and Joyce (nee Jackson) Stebbins of Stebbins Road in Silver Creek, NY, near the shores of Lake Erie.pa,
They were descended from Rowland Stebbins who emigrated from England in 1634 and from the first family to settle in the nearby Town of Sheridan, New York in 1806. In 1999, he moved to Kilmarnock, Virginia on the Chesapeake.
Raised during the Depression,
Sky played baseball and ran track and graduated 3rd in his class from Silver Creek High in 1943. He was chosen by the Army Special Training Program to spend a year at Cornell prior to turning 18. He started active duty in 1944 and in February 1945, joined I Company, 10th Brigade, 5th Infantry Division in Germany, for which he earned the Combat Infantry Badge with two Battle Stars for the European Campaign. He was awarded a Bronze Star in 2003.
In 1947, he returned to Cornell where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1950. He was proud to be one of the founding members of the Watermargin fraternity. Unique at the time, Watermargin was founded in 1947 by a group of WWII veterans who shared the purpose of promoting understanding between people of different races and religious affiliations. His friendship with brothers Sam Sackman, Bob Kushell and Tashio Sato were important throughout his life.
Soon after he began a career, his presence was needed back on the family farm and he dutifully returned. His family was on the founding board of National Grape Cooperative the farmer's cooperative that owns Welch's. He was an innovator and leader in grape and apple farming. He served six years as a Director of the New York State Horticultural Society and six years on the Advisory Committee for Chautauqua County Extension Services. With a partner, he was one of the first to buy a mechanical harvester in late 1960s to automate grape picking. He also confidently experimented with growing a portion of his acreage as imported wine varietals. In addition to the vineyards, a prized apple orchard could be found on the property of the 150-year old farmhouse. Sky kept working in retirement and helped establish two vineyards and wineries in Northern Neck of Virginia Athena Vineyards and Good Luck Cellars. Sky continued up to the end still driving tractor one week before his passing.
Sky married Anne Shirley Russell, a school teacher from Freeport, NY in 1955. They raised six sons in the Silver Creek school system.
Sky made a long series of community contributions, including being on the Hanover Town Recreation Board and the scout leader. He served as a School Board member from 1974 to 1995, which was a period of expansion and excellence for Silver Creek. He oversaw the construction of two schools, a pool and the consolidation of K-12 to one campus. The construction of the multiple ball fields, playground, football concession stand and media tower were done in no small part by his surveying tools, his tractor and his hands. His community contributions continued in Kilmarnock, as he volunteered for a range of activities at the Northern Neck Free Health Center and he and his wife ran the Interfaith Council warehouse which provides clothing and household needs to the needy. Sky was an active member of Kiwanis for 40 years in New York and Virginia and prouldly served on the Lancaster County Democratic Committee.
A more informal contribution Sky made was to the youth of Silver Creek. Not only did he attend virtually every race, game and meet, home and away, for six sons every year from 1970 to 1986, but also became known for attending Silver Creek sporting events after his sons had graduated. Each year he hired ten or more teenagers to work in the vineyards, despite evidence that it was not the most financially prudent way to get the work done. These were the first jobs for the 50 or so boys and girls he hired and many worked for Sky from middle school through college. Many of these former employees have let the family know what an influence he was on them.
To honor Sky's life, contributions can be made either to the Lancaster/Northumberland Interfaith Service Council, PO Box 868, Kilmarnock, VA 22482 and made payable to the LNISC or to the SCCS Schuyler Stebbins scholarship fund c/o Silver Creek Central School at 1 Dickinson Street, Silver Creek, NY 14136.
On Saturday, March 26, the family will greet friends from 1-2 p.m. at the Currie Funeral Home on Church Street in Kilmarnock, Va. prior to a service at 2 p.m. Following the service, a reception to celebrate Sky's life will be held at the Historic Christ Church Bayne Center in Irvington, Va. An additional memorial event will be planned in Silver Creek, New York later this year.

Historic Christ Church ."

She married
William Raymond Stebbins on June 12, 1925.
Your post is 6 years old at this point----did you get information? If not I think I have some information for ancestors of your Hollis but not so much on descendants. The names Hollis and Alvin appear in my research in Erie Co NY so I think probably we are referring to same line.

Correction Re: Alleged 1781 and 1782 births at Wilbraham of Gaius Stebbins

I examined today on microfilm (FHL 0904738) the original town records for Wilbraham, which give the following:

"Gaius Stebbins son of Sarah Goodwill born Decr 2, 1782."

The other records on the page mention both father and mother, and are for the years 1786 and 1787.

This birth is also shown in Chauncy Peck’s 1922 typewritten transcript of Wilbraham records (examined on microfilm, FHL 0904739), but there it is given erroneously, thus:

"Goodwill, Gains [sic], son Sarah Goodwill, b. December 2, 1782."

The index at familysearch.org is to Peck's transcript, and so repeats his errors. The record as reported by Greenlee and Greenlee in "The Stebbins Genealogy" is correct.

No sign in either the Wilbraham town records or Peck's transcript, of the 02 Sep. 1781 birth of Gaius Stebbins to Gaius Stebbins and Sally Cooley. Greenlee and Greenlee's source for that one remains a mystery.

This only clears up how the 02 Dec. 1782 record actually reads. I still do not know whether the Gaius Stebbins named there lived to adulthood, or if he did, which later records in that name belong with this birth.
Gaius Stebbins, b. 05 Oct. 1763

To continue with another of the various men named Gaius Stebbins from Tim Foley's post...

Gaius Stebbins, b. 05 Oct. 1763, was a Revolutionary War pensioner. In an 1832 declaration for pension, given at Hudson, Columbia County, New York, he provided the following details about himself:

"I was born at Wilbraham County of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts October 5th 1763. In march 1778 being then between fourteen & fifteen years of age and of large stature, by consent of my father Moses Stebbins who was uncommonly zealous in the American cause I joined a Company as a volunteer commanded by Capt Morgan stationed at Springfield in said County of Hampshire to guard military stores and served as a private in that Company for the term of three months."

Later in this same declaration, Gaius Stebbins recounted the places he had lived since the war:

"After leaving the service I lived in Wilbraham as nearly as I can recollect until the spring of 1791 when I removed to the Town of Hillsdale County of Columbia and State of New York, where I have resided the whole time since with the exception of four years from May 1822 to May 1826 the two first of which I resided in Hudson the two last in Fishkill in the County of Dutchess & State of New York. In 1826 I removed again to Hillsdale where I have resided until about six month ago, since which time I have resided in Hudson."

Despite his assertion that he lived in Hillsdale, Columbia, New York for every census year from 1800 to 1830, I have so far found the name Gaius Stebbins at this location in the ancestry.com census indexes for the year 1810 only.

The familysearch.org index to Massachusetts Births and Christenings, 1639-1915, gives Gains [sic] Stebbins, male, b. 05 Oct. 1763, Wilbraham, Hampden, Massachusetts, parents Moses and Dorcas Stebbins.

Two documents from the pension file of Gaius Stebbins name children. The first is a power of attorney, executed by Charles S. Stebbins, 09 Aug. 1834, which reads in part:

"Know all men by these presents that I Charles S. Stebbins do hereby constitute Eliza Ann Rich the wife of Lewis Rich my true & lawful attorney to ask for demand & receive all such monies as many be due or comeing to me as one of the heirs of my said Father Gaius Stebbins from the United States, being pension mony due to the said Gaius Stebbins previous to his death..."

The second is a 08 Oct. 1834 affidavit by Samuel Williams, naming the sole heirs then living of Gaius Stebbins:

"Be it remembered that on the Eighth day of October one thousand eight hundred and thirty four personally appeared in the Court of Common Pleas for the City and County of New York Samuel Williams of the said City, who being duly sworn deposed and said that he was well acquainted with Gaius Stebbins deceased who was a pensioner of the United States and died on the twenty seventh day of May last, and left no widow him surviving, she having died several years previous, and that the only children living at the time of his decease were Eliza Ann Rich wife of Lewis Rich, and Charles S. Stebbins and that they are respectively of age."

There are two versions of the 1809 Will of Lemuel Crosby of Hillsdale available online. One names Gaius Stebbins a son-in-law, the other names Lewis Stebbins instead. The first of these two versions appears in a 21 Apr. 2002 post on the Ancestry.com Columbia, NY message board. Regarding Gaius Stebbins, this reads:

"One fifth part to be paid to my daughter THIRZA CROSBY at my decease and the remaining part to be put to interest at my decease and to be paid to my two sons DARIUS CROSBY and ISAAC A. CROSBY an equal part to each at the age of twenty one with use I also recommend it to my executors to have my two sons DARIUS and ISAAC N. CROSBY live with my son in law GAIUS STEBBINS until each of them shall arrive at the age of twenty one and to be taught the art of tanning and currying and making shoes."

The second version appears in "Abstracts of Wills, Administrations and Guardianships in NY State, 1787-1835," scans of which appear on the NEHGS website. This version reads:

"Page 333-335. Register of Wills Liber C will (pgs 333-334) Lemuel Crosby of Town of Hillsdale Columbia, N.Y. – to my wife Elizabeth Crosby all my household furniture ½ my debts during her life & at her decease to be divided among my 3 ch’n viz Thirza Crosby Darius Crosby and Isaac N. Crosby to my sons Darius Crosby & Isaac N. Crosby equal parts at age 21 yrs. My 2 sons Darius & Isaac N. Crosby to live with my son-in-law LEWIS Stebbins til each is 21 yrs & to be taught the art of tanning & currying & making shoes. Appt my wife Elizabeth Crosby & my brother Darius Crosby exrs – S & s 18 March 1807. Sg Lemuel Crosby [LS] wits Robert Gardner, Alvan Somers, Thirsey Crosby. Pvd. 6 May 1809 (in Dutchess Co., N.Y.)."

Greenlee and Greenlee, in The Stebbins Genealogy (1904), drawing on unspecified sources, say the following regarding the present Gaius Stebbins:

"…son of Moses Stebbins and Dorcas Hale, was born October 5, 1763, at Wilbraham, Massachusetts; died May 27, 1834, probably at Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York. Resided at Alford, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, and Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York. Married __... GAIUS STEBBINS was in the continental army in 1780, and was representative of Columbia County in 1807 and 1808-9."

Greenlee and Greenlee list two children, Gaius who married Anna Williams, and Robert who married Margaret. Regarding Robert, Greenlee and Greenlee say "not positive" (i.e., not positive that he is a child of Gaius Stebbins, b. 05 Oct. 1763). The children given in the pension file documents discussed above are not recorded in Greenlee and Greenlee.
Alleged 1781 and 1782 births at Wilbraham of Gaius Stebbins

My research into the various men named Gaius Stebbins is at an early stage, but here is what I know right now concerning the alleged births of men named Gaius Stebbins at Wilbraham in 1781 and 1782.

According to Greenlee and Greenlee, in "The Stebbins Genealogy," published 1904, the town records of Wilbraham, Massachusetts give a Gaius Stebbins, b. 02 Dec. 1782, son of Stebbins (first name not given) and Sarah Goodwill.

Greenlee and Greenlee also report the 02 Sep. 1781 birth at Wilbraham of a Gaius Stebbins, to parents Gaius Stebbins and Sally Cooley, but make no statement as to where this birth is recorded.

Greenlee and Greenlee opine that these two birth records may be for the identical individual, but this conclusion is far from obvious, given that the records have in common only the given name "Gaius."

The familysearch.org index to Massachusetts Births and Christenings, 1639-1915, does not turn up an obvious candidate for the alleged 02 Sep. 1781 birth of Gaius Stebbins to parents Gaius Stebbins and Sally Cooley. Greenlee and Greenlee evidently got this birth from some source other than Wilbraham vital records.

The 02 Dec. 1782 birth at Wilbraham, Hampden, Massachusetts does appear in the familysearch.org index, but the child is indexed as "Gains" [a common misreading of Gaius] Goodwill, the mother is Sarah Goodwill, and no father is given at all.

The implication of a child bearing his mother’s surname, with no father given, is that the birth was illegitimate. I do not know what evidence, if any, Greenlee and Greenlee had for stating that a Stebbins was the father of this child.

Given the confused nature of the above, I cannot say with certainty that the alleged 1781 and 1782 births of men named Gaius Stebbins actually occurred, nor that the children lived to adulthood even if the births did occur. If anyone knows more about these alleged births, I would like to hear it.

I have information on the other Gaius Stebbins records appearing in Tim Foley's original post, and will put that up in the next day or two.

Death of Col. Henry G. Stebbins - 1881

Taken from the Cherokee Advocate, Oklahoma, 16 December 1881

Col. Henry G. Stebbins Banker of the first of H. G. Stebbins & Co., died in the City of New York Friday the 9th inst., aged seventy years. No man in New York has been more widely and favorably known, in the commercial and social world, than Col. Stebbins. His probity of character, good judgment and push, and splendid social qualities, gave his success as a merchant, Banker, Railroad and Marine official. His wealth was freely lavished upon his less fortunate fellow-men and upon institutions for ameliorating their condition. His name will long be honored and reverenced by all who knew him or knew of him.

Benoni Stebbins

Benoni Stebbins, born 1689, enters into my Connecticut family tree. The most reliable sources say he was born in Northampton MA, where another Benoni was born in 1655. Seems logical one is son of the other. But no sources show this -- lists of Benoni's children do not include a Benoni. (Nor do I find any other mention of the younger Benoni's family of origin.)
But the elder Benoni had a younger brother Samuel, who deserted his family, fled to Rhode Island, and remarried (bigamously). By his first wife he had a son, Samuel Jr, born 1689, of whom I have found no further record. Is it possible that his abandoned first wife (granted a divorce in 1695) renamed son Samuel Jr with the name of admired uncle Benoni? (I have no evidence for this -- I'd like to find the true story, whether it's this or something else.)

Hi Judy:

I hope this will find its way to you since your post was way back in 2003. Anyway, I live in Knox County, Maine and volunteer for the Rockland, Maine Historical Society. I am working on a project with the old newspapers and just came across an interesting obit of a man who was identified as William C. Stebbins who had reference letters in his pocket from an E.C. Stebbins, druggist, in Boston, MA. This obit is from a 1/20/1873 newspaper. If you are interested, let me know. You can e-mail me directly at megsateennow@aol.com if you want to.

Cindy Beane

Horace Stebbins in Van Buren Co MI

Horace Stebbins born in Deerfield MA in 1804, moved as boy to Potter, Yates Co NY and as an adult moved to Van Buren Co, MI. The Stebbins Genealogy says he married Susannah Vedder but have been able to find no trace of her. According to info I have, Horace married Jane Mulholland (2 children) and second Lydia Skinner (2 children.) Anyone with any knowledge of whether or not Susannah Vedder existed and knowledge of any descendants of Horace I would like to correspond. I believe Horace had only one child who had children---daughter Maria married Barnabas Odell. Only son was Lewis who died in Civil War service. I am descended from Horace's brother George and am attempting to trace all 13 siblings in that family. Parents were John and Sarah (Sanderson) Stebbins.

I think I may be related to you. My grandmother was Marie Louise Stebbins, sister to a Charles Stebbins born in Canada in the mid 1800s. When my grandmother was in her early to mid 20s she was living around Pawtucket Rhode Island. She was sent out west to care for her brother, Charles Stebbins and his children who I believe lived in Idaho at that time. She married Thomas Pierce Moore, owner of the general merchantile store there. Would you know anything about that? Thanks.

Photograph of "Grandpa Stebbins"

I have a 6 x 8 photograph of an elderly man and a young boy sitting on his lap. On the back of the photograph is written "Buster (about 5) and Grandpa Stebbins. The boy is William Gustavus Andrews, born February 27, 1902 and died in 1985. The picture is of the man sitting in a rocking chair, in front of a fireplace holding the boy. The picture looks like it was taken at night, as it has a dark background. Judging from the age of the boy, I assume the man was born between 1830 and 1840. The picture could have been taken by the Allen sisters of Deerfield. (A fantastic picture, as you see the fireplace, and the side of the man and boy).

Looking for family of Henry H. Stebbins b. 10-25-1832.

Hi, I'm looking for the family of Henry H. Stebbins. The only Henry H I can find in the Stebbins Ancestorial Society was married to (someone)Gutherie & then married in 1849 to Lucy Marie Adams in New York. Through this marriage he had 2 children Charles Henry b.1850 & Amelia b.1852. I've found that Charles Henry, the son, was married but no other information. I believe that Henry H. Stebbins then moved to Dexter Michigan & married Edna Wilsey in 1860 & started "The Stebbins House" which was a hotel & restaurant. He & Edna had 2 children, 1 of which died, the other Charles William Stebbins b. 8-1861. Henry died in july of 1884 leaving the hotel to his wife & son Charles William. I am trying to locate someone who can fill in the blanks for me about this man. Is he the man who was married to Guthrie & then Lucy Marie Adams and then married Edna Wilsey? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi, I am so glad to hear from you. I know you are related directly to us & your father & my father-in-law were first cousins. I even might have pictures of your father with Dad. I have a whole lot of information about our side of the Stebbins which goes back to Homer's father, Charles Stebbins & Clara Stebbins and Charles's father, Henry H. & Edna Stebbins. Did your dad give you any information about his family tree? If you would like to contact me, you can call our business on monday & I can tell you more about all of our families. My number is 1-800-852-8155. I don't get in until about 11:30 so you can call after that time. Hope to hear from you soon. Mary Jo Stebbins

I have listed in my family genealogy a Dempster Stebbins married Lucy C. Archer Guyer in 1892 in Banks, Antrim County, Michigan. Lucy was born 1864 Hillsdale County, Michigan. Lucy 1st married Herman Guyer in 1884; he died 1886. Lucy and Dempster Stebbins had one child: Harley James Stebbins who was born Feb 20, 1893 in Banks, Antrim County, Michigan and died Nov. 10, 1958 in Ventura County, California.

Hope this helps.

Barb

An Anna Stebbins from Chesterfield MASS married Lyman Witherell, also from Chesterfield. They moved to Beaver Dam, Wisconsin and lived to celebrate her golden wedding anniversary in 1887. I have the newspaper article describing that anniversary celebration. If you want to have a copy, let me know. I live in the town next to Chesterfield, Mass. if you want research done. Hampshire county, not Franklin (for Chesterfield).
