I am interested in finding out if the Steff's were orginally Steib when they immigrated here from France. John Wesley Steff/Smith was my great grandfather.

Thank you,
Marie Terry

I have info from Tony steff that John Wesley married Helena Kaess February 18, 1903. The only info I have on John Wesley is that he was in a fight and that a person died so his family got him out of town. He changed his last name to Smith. My grandmother said back them they would have hung him. She took her mother Ethel Mae to Colorado to visit him. She is very old now and doesn't remember much. She says he wouldn't come out of the basement to see them. Is Ernest Smith his son? I have no info on his children.

I'm working on John Wesley Steff "Smith" who was Theodore Steff's son. John Wesley came to Colorado and changed his last name to Smith, probably around 1904. I have some info that states he didn't come here until about 1914, but know that's not true, because he had my grandfather, Ernest Smith in Colorado in 1904. Do you have any info on when John Wesley came to Colorado, and/or any info on Ernest Smith? Any info would be appreciated.

Buford Steff

Buford Steff was a first cousin of my grandmother, Chloe Geary Fentress. His father was Homer Steff and mother was Clydie Smith. Buford's brothers and sisters were: Merle (F), Myrna, Dorothy, Katherine and Hubert.
In the 1930's Homer died and soon after his wife also died, leaving the children. Merle, Buford and Myrna tried to raise the other children unsuccessfully. Hubert, Katherine and Dorothy were put in an orphanage. My grandmother and grandfather, Aden and Chloe Fentress took in Myrna. Merle went on her own or stayed with someone, but died not long afterward.
Homer Steff's father was Theodore and mother was Mary Francis Allen, who lived at Spring Lick, Kentucky. Theodore was born in 1857 and died in 1945 at the age of 88. He ran a distillery in the area of Goff's Crossing and Spring Lick.
Theodore Steff's father was Mitchell Steff, who in 1870 was living at Colesburg Post Office in Hardin County, Kentucky. Mitchell was born in 1818 and died in 1877 at age of 69. Theodore had at least two brotehrs and one sister: Mithcell born in 1848, Emuel born in 1853 and Mary born in 1855.
I have more information if you want it. My e-mail is coyote@blaise.net

Hi Tim, Here is what I have on these two. Ellodia Steff was born 2/4/1889 in Steff, Ky. She married Romey Payton. She is the daughter of Emiel Steff and Louisa Carter. Her brother was Willis Steff and she had a half sister named Ola Mabel Steff. I have Roscoe listed as Willis's son. His mother was Lizzie McCoy. Roscoe had several half brothers and sisters from Willis and Millie Embry. They are Jewell (f), Albert, Edward, Ottis (f), and Martha Louise. Emiel was my Great-Grandfathers brother. (Theodore). I could probably dig up more info, if you would need it. Also, I would appreciate anything you have on this side.
Thanks,
Hope this helps!
Tony

Steff's in Australia

I would like you to know that there is some research being done in the state of Victoria in Australia, by the Steff's. I don't have many details but it appears three sisters travelled to the glod rush of the 1860's from England. If this is a possible match on anything you find, you may wish to contact some of the Steff's in Victoria, Australia.

I don't know if we are related or not. Is Daniel the son of Robert? Robert was the son of Dorothy (Hussey) Steff. She married my uncle, Clifford Steff, many years ago, he adopted Robert, I think. I am 52 and am trying to remember this. I haven't kept in touch with the Steffs much. Linda
