Hello,

I am looking for information on the Steinman/Steinmann Family who lived in Waterbury, CT.

Emil C. STEINMAN married Amelia ENZ, both born in Switzerland. Emil owned a grocery store called Steinman's in Waterbury. Emil and Amelia first settled in Boston Massachusetts before making their home in CT. They had at least two children; Emil E., and Emily and possibly another daughter named Lind?.

Emil E. married Emma and had three children; Robert, Raymond and Evelyn.

Any information about this family would be greatly appreciated. Kaugelli@cox.net

Thank you, Kim Augelli

Elizabeth Steinman - Bn.Prussia,Ger.>St.Louis, MO>Memphis, TN

Elizabeth Steinman married Conrad Baumgartner in St. Louis, Missouri in 1841. In 1843 a Conrad Baumgartner opened an office (architect, draftsman, & surveyor) in Ft. Pickering, a suburb of Memphis, Tennessee. In 1845 a Mrs. Elizabeth Baumgartner married Joseph Keller in Ft. Pickering. The 1850 U.S. Census for Memphis, Tennessee shows an Agatha Baumgartner (63 yrs.), a Mary Baumgartner (8) and a Conrad Baumgartner (6) living with the Joseph Keller family. In the 1860 Census for Memphis, there is a Johanna Baumgartner (3 yrs.) living with the Joseph Kellers. In 1860
Joseph Keller and Mary Keller (?) were witnesses for the marriage license of George Keller and Louisia Baumgartner in Memphis, Tennessee. On the Catholic church christening records in Memphis, the two youngest Keller children are shown with their parents' names being Joseph Keller and "Liza" Saineman.(I believe "Saineman" a mispelling of "Steinmann." "Liza" is used elsewhere as a nickname for "Elizabeth", also called "Lizzy" occasionally.) In 1861 the funeral of Johanna Baumgartner is held at the home of Mrs. Joseph Keller.

Obviously, there is a real connection between these families. Can anyone help me identify this Elizabeth Steinman or any of the Baumgartners listed above. The census records show Elizabeth was born in Prussia, Germany about 1825. The Baumgartners originated in Switzerland, and Joseph Keller came from Thurgau, Switz.

Kenneth,

I found a J. Steinman on the rolls of Waul's Texas Legion. This was a Confederate unit consisting of infantry, cavalry, and artillery companies. This unit formed in the summer of 1862 in Brenham, TX. I don't have proof that this is our gg-grandfather but the odds are pretty good that this is either him or a brother.

Mike

Re: Steinmann - Texas

Hi Ken,

I missed seeing you at the re-union this summer.

On my screen, I can't tell for sure if the name is Steinmann. Anyway, I'm sure this isn't the family we are looking for. What I know is posted below. You can double check me or assume it is accurate and go from there. Your choice. I don't guarantee anything and you get what you pay for.

According to the 1880 census for Washington Co. (Precinct 4, ED139, pages 31 and 32) and other Washington Co. (marriage and church) records, our great-great grandmother Mary Sophia E. was born Sept. 10, 1827. She and our great-great grandfather were born in Mechlenberg, Germany. I don't know if the "E" is for her maiden name.

I did not find our family in the 1850 census in Washington or surrounding counties. That doesn't mean they weren't there, I could have overlooked them. My guess is they emigrated from Germany to Texas sometime between 1845 and 1860, probably during the 1850's. A check of Germans to America didn't shed any light.

There are four pages in the 1860 Washington Co. census that I haven't been able to retrieve. They are 36, 75, 137, and 139. All are from the Independence and Brenham areas. Our family could well be on one of those pages. Maybe you can retrieve them or find a hard copy.

My Dad says he remembers our grandfather telling a story our great-great grandfather riding his horse across the Brazos and enlisting in a cavalry unit at the start of the Civil War. He didn't come home and was declared dead. I've checked the casualty records and rosters of some Texas units during the War of Northern Aggression and haven't found anything yet.

Emil was born August 4, 1861 and Mary re-married Amel Block on Nov. 11, 1867. Obviously his father was around just before the war and wasn't shortly thereafter so there is reason to think that story is true.

Hope this helps. Maybe between us, we can figure this out. Give me a call or e-mail sometime.

Hi there cousin. I was trying to help my mother find the same thing. I found the following when searching the 1860 census. Pull up the 1860 census, Texas, Washington County, unnamed townships, goto page 25. At the bottom of the page you will see Morris Steinman and I think (but it is hard to read) Mary Steinman. Also listed are 5 or 6 children such as Nancy, Samuel, John. The last one is listed as 1 year old. Could this be the one we are looking for? I don't know. This is one year before Emil Steinmann was born. It looks like Morris was an Overseer of slaves. Looks like they were born in GA and SC and moved toward texas. Their youngest was the only one born in Texas, so I am guessing that they arrived in Texas in 1859. Take a look at this 1860 Census and page and let me know what you think. He arrived at Ellis Island, NY on November 25, 1892 on the Red Star ship "Rhyland". He was born in April of 1877. He was single at the time of his arrival. Both of his parents were from Germany.
Katherine

I'm looking for anything that might be connected with Katherine Steinmann, born ca. 1868, take or give a couple of years. She died in the 1920's after her only son Peter F. Kelly was killed in France in WWI in 1918. Katherine lived in New York as an adult, and she spoke fluent German. She was married to Charles Keller, but no one seems to know what happenend to Charles. Peter lived in NY with wife Catherine Upton, and three sons, Harold, Albert and Peter.

family from Oberthal-Munsingen region, BE, Switzerland

My Swiss family traces back to Magdalena STEINMANN b.1822 at Oberthal, near Bern. Her parents were Johann STEINMANN Margaretha JENNI (from Munsingen). Although I've found life expectancy was generally quite short in this region during this era I expect there would be more family members somewhere who have a connection.
Magdalena died 1886 in Fluntern, Zurich (Perhaps, I think, with another relly??) If I can help, or you have an interest, my email is selhawken@telstra.easymail.com.au
