I am the paternal grandson of Wesley Stephan, who is mentioned in your 2006 post below. I recognize all of the American Stephans, and see that you have gone further back into the german side of the family than I. Would love to hear more about your relation to me.

Stephan-Stephans, of Germany

Looking for my great grandfathers family lines from somewhere near Hamburg, Germany. Jacob was born in 1863 and arrived in America in 1868. Confusion over the years with spelling of the last name has been a problem. I've even been told that originally the name was Von Stephan and changed when family came to America.
He came across with a Barbara and Martin Stephan, possibly with 4 other siblings.

Descendants of Mattias Stephan

Would like anyones help researching this same line. I have seen 3 or 4 different versions of how this line goes. Can anyone enlighten me on this. When it comes to Anton Stephan (1795-1835) it looks as thought me married twice...#1 Magdalena Bach and had the following kids: David (1791), Franz (1801), Jakob (1803), Anton (1810-1857){m. Magdalena L. Stephan (1815-1880)} and possibly Valentine (1812-1867)-some have him with 1st wife and some have him with second wife. Then he married #2 Friederika Hamo (sp?) and had Magdalena (1814-1880) {m. Anton ?} and possibly Christian (1816){m. Magdalena Greiner}, Martin (1819), Elisabeth (1822) and Maria (1826). Also, are the latter 4 really the children of another Stephan?

Anton Stephan (1810-1857) married Magdalena L. Stephan (1815-1880) who supposedly is the daughter of Johannes Stephan & (Barbara Schehl?)...is this correct? I have seen a Johannes Stephan married to a Barbara Dahm in the same area but it only lists their children as Phillippina, Franziska Josepha (1805-) and Margaretha Julianna (1809).

I find it odd that there are 2 Magdalena Stephans with very close b/d dates married to an Anton...are they one and the same? Is it possible that a sibling from the 1st marriage of Anton Sr. married a sibling from his 2nd marriage.

I descend via the following:
Mattias Stephan (1700-?)
Joseph Stephan (1726-1820)
Anton Stephan (1759-1835)
Johann Julius "Valentine" Stephan (1812-1867)
Margaretha (1841-1900) & Anna Maria Stephan (1851-1907)
*{sisters}*

Thanks to anyone who can untwist this mess for me.

Tara

Hi,
I was only wondering about the private property thing,
because when I took my mom and one of my brothers'.
I went down Shaw park rd made a right on to the dirt road,
past a log home and there on a post it said private property
no tresspassing violaters will be prosecuted. So who owns,
that land now.I have some family members(Babbitt side)that
would love to see where their great great grandparents,
are buried.I know my mom would for sure.I wonder why Reuben&Jeanne were buried in town and not in Stephan cemetery.Maybe it was because the did not live to far away from it.Do you know that big yellow two story home right across from the hospital parking lot? Well that was Reuben&Jeanne(Stephan)Babbitt's home.Reuben bought the kit I believe from Sears(I was told) and built their home.
Thank-you for responding.
Renee
Peter and Helen owned most of all the land according to the news paper I read. I submitted a picture of Rube to the Grayling Museum. I may have a bunch of people in my pictures that was passed to me from my Great Grandmother, Edna Trudeau. They had a photo studio for a while I think. I plan on posting them one day in hopes they can all be recognized. As a kid, Scott Howe and I walked past on our way to the bridge. We were going to stop by, but didn't. Makes me think you do not need permission.

Thank-you for answering my question.
But If it's private I wondering why there are directions on the internet on how to get there?
There is an older couple that come in to where I work and they live in Grayling-they said they asked Jay Stephan how to get there and he gave them the directions.
My only purpose for going would be to see the graves of
Peter&Helene(Thinnes)Stephan my great great greatgrandparents.Their daughter Jeanne(Stephan)Babbitt was
my great greatgrandmother. My Grandfather was the son of Berniece Babbitt(Reuben&Jeanne Babbitt's daughter).
So Peter& Helene are my Stephan lineage.
Who owns the property? and do you know if the cemetery is on
the same site where Peter&Helene had their home?
Thank-you again
Renee Butka
Gaylord,Michigan

I am pretty sure the property is private. But seeing as you can be buried there, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Since we are all cousins, I think you are allowed.
Have you had much luck in the search back in German\France yet?

Hi I am searching for Stephan's in Cleveland. Adolph was born in 1877 in Germany and came to the United States in 1892 aboard the ship Illinois which docked in Philadelphia. It says he was going to Cleveland to 399 Ontario St. It looks like it might say he was going to live with an uncle. I have him in the census from 1910 on but can't find 1900. If this is your family would love to know what you have.

can you find on your books, a Peter William Stephan b abt 1836. married Helen Tinnes of Germany b abt 1869, had what looks like 7 kids, but due to the age, could have married into the family. William 1857, Louise 1861, Jennie, Leone , Henry, John 1871 and George 1874. they would have migrated around 1873-1879 to the US. as you said, there is no telling how they spelled the last name.

I have that they married on 1 Oct 1833 in Gronau, Odenwald, Starkenburg, Hessen, Germany. I know they had 2 children in Hessen, Germany. Elizabeth b. 1 March 1835 and William B b. 27 Dec 1840. I know the immigrated about 1841. I don't have any verified info about John Peter STEPHAN's parents or Anna Margaretha Dorothea APPEL's parents.
