Hey, Terry! I just found this old post...did you get your question answered?

Craig Watkins' tree should have it all; he's a descendent of them. My info on that line has all been verified.

Ida Jane was my great grandmother, too!

joy

Priscilla Helen Stephenson

I am looking for any information on Priscilla Helen Stephenson (1910-) born in Pawcatuck, CT and also lived in Westerly, RI. Her father was John Thomas Stephenson (1869-1948) born in England, died in Westerly/Pawcatuck; her mother was Elizabeth Maria Fenelon (1867-1935) born in New London / Waterford, CT, died in Westerly, RI. I know that Priscilla lived in Westerly in the 1930 US census, and in the 1925 RI census. Beyond that I do not know a thing. If anyone knows of this family or has any more info, I would appreciate letting me know. Thank you. Diane Roseman Dimmock

Female descendants of Mary Ellen Stephenson Leonard?

I am interested in finding any direct female descendants of Mary Ellen Stephenson, b. 1855 in Missouri, daughter of an Ioway Indian woman whose name is unknown to us and Benjamin Franklin Stephenson. Mary Ellen was raised by a paternal aunt and uncle after her mother returned to her people, perhaps taking another daughter with her, and Benjamin went about his business.

Mary Ellen married David Richard Augustus Cox Leonard in 1879 in Henderson County, Illinois. He was a Civil War veteran. They had 9 children: Richard, Charles, Benjamin, SOPHIA ELLEN, Fred, Robert, Harrison, Roy, and Ralph (my husband's grandfather).

Sophia Ellen Leonard married Leroy Boswell. I believe they had the following children, although this is from other researchers, not direct evidence, yet:
Helen, Lucille, Mary, Paul, Pauline, William Lee, Leroy, Leonard P.

We are interested in making contact in particular with the daughters or granddaughters of the sisters in this family (Helen, Lucille, Mary, Pauline), i.e., the direct female descendants of the unknown Ioway woman, in hopes that some DNA testing may shed some light on who she may have been.
Well fooey, accidentally deleted a long post here.

His brother James was in Ark with him. See this book "A Documentary History of Arkansas", By C. Fred Williams, S. Charles Bolton, Carl H. Moneyhon, LeRoy T. Williams.

William TTP Stevenson was the son of James Stephenson and Elizabeth Fowler. Elizabeth Fowler was sister of the Rev. James Fowler that married James's sister Mary Stephenson.

In his biography William TTP Stevenson said he was born in the Ninety-Six District in S.C. in 1768 and mentioned going to the Nollichucky River area in Greene County,TN with his cousin Stephenson Fowler. Stephenson Fowler was the son of the Rev. James Fowler and Mary Stephenson.

The James Stephenson (that married Elizbeth Fowler) and his sister Mary were some of the children of David & Annos Stephenson of York Co. SC. David and Annos (probably Agnes McKay) first settled ca1740 north of the Old Augusta Stone Church that was/is located at present day Ft. Defiance VA. With David were presumed brothers William, Thomas, Robert, and John. David and Annos and all children went to York Co. SC ca1764. David's brothers stayed in VA in the vicinity of Harrisonburg VA in Rockingham Co. John can be found on the Find-A-Grave web site.

I am not aware of any other Stev(ph)enson relatives of William besides his brother James being in ARK or LA with him.

If you have any living male Stev(ph)enson descendants I would suggest getting them to take the YDNA test.

See my website for more details - http://www.mikeinkaty.com/mikeshouse.htm

When Rev. Wm Stephenson lived in Hempstead County, Arkansas for quite a few years in the early 1800s, there were other Stevenson / Stephensons also there who I descend from. We only recently have determined that the Rev. William was probably NOT of our line. Do you have any research on others living near him there? I'm suddenly up against a brick wall and looking for clues.

Were Rev. Wm's parents James Stevenson and Elizabeth Thompson? All things on internet and in his autobiography with the Methodist Church say so, but in looking at DAR application papers where James and Elizabeth Thompson Stevenson's children are named, there is no William!?! Help!
Cathy Straley
cathy@dustyroads.net
As fate would have it, last night, while searching for more information on my Stephenson ancestors, I came across a book entitled "Trails West: Book II The trail to San Jacinto" by Betty Smith Meischen. The author tells the true story of her ancestor's journey to Texas, and their part in its fight for independence. Our Stephenson ancestors are in their, by name, and the other families they travelled with from Ireland to Pennsylvania, to Rowan County, North Carolina, and beyond. I just ordered the book from Amazon; just $13.95 and worth it, I'm sure. There's an excerpt for preview on line; I googled Andrew John Stephenson, Rowan County, North Carolina and the book came up. BTW, I descend from William "LG" Stephenson's brother, John S. Stephenson. John moved to Georgia to be with his son Thomas, and died there in Greene County in 1794. I've been in contact with one of the N.C. descendants of William "LG", who just last week confirmed by a comparison of signatures that our John S. Stephenson was their "long lost brother" of William. Hope this helps.

I am currently researching Stephensons who settled in Wayne, St. Francois, and Butler Counties, Missouri. My mother is a Stephenson, and I've found conflicting information, and some unsubstantiated. The records I've found show variant spellings Stephenson, Stevenson, Stinson. Same people. If you have helpful information, I would appreciate the share. My tree is Vanleer Johnson Family Tree here on ancestry. Please keep in mind, this is a work in progress. Thanks so much.

Yep, I think you have something there. I know the spelling is Stephenson, but they just misspelled it. I had already found out that Lottie's parents were Isaac Robert Ponder and Mary Frances Wright. It doesn't say Lottie was Divorced, it just said she was single and I'm sure that is the Arthur I'm looking for. I see it says she was 21 when she was first married so I can look at those years to hopefully find a Marriage License. Now I know he had a sister and I need to change the spelling and I'm sure I'll find more out. Thank you so much for your help. Once I can break through I'll let you know what I came up with. I really appreciate the time you've spent with this!

I've been following my Gr/Gr Grandfather, Joseph Stephenson, in Noblesville, Hamilton, IN. He appears on 1850 and 1860 censuses but disappears by 1870 census where his wife, Abigail, appears with their children and a new husband. Got Civil War records, etc. and went to Noblesville to find his death record and/or tombstone. Come to find out, I was chasing the wrong Joseph Stephenson. The one who was in the Civil War from Hamilton Co., IN died in 1902 at the age of 62. This could not be my Joseph. I'm at a dead end here. He had children: Jacob, James Alexander, and Victoria. Can anybody help me? Please? :-)

Margaret Stephenson
Seven Fields
Formerly of Latrobe
Margaret Wood Stephenson, 87,
of Seven Fields,
went to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 24, 2012.
Born in Ridgway, Oct. 7, 1924,
Marge, as she was known to many, was
a daughter of the late Lucille and Gen. Herford M. Wood. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Earle W., on Aug. 22, 2001.
Marge was a member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church in Bradenville, where she had taught catechism. She was also a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Honors sorority and Tri Sigma Sigma. Marge loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, playing with her dogs, traveling and playing cards, and was also known to be an excellent cook. Although she lived the last several years in Seven Fields and Hermitage, she had made her home in Latrobe for 40 years, where she made many lasting friendships. She took pride in being an excellent student and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in business (accounting) in 1946 from the Pennsylvania State University and worked as personnel manager at Crucible Steel before leaving to start a family.

James Stephenson who married Malinda Henderdon ( maybe around Titus Tx)
"I have been looking for years to find out who Malinda Box was. I was looking for information on her family today and I couldn't believe what I found...I found her son 's death cert. (Andrew Jackson Stephenson) on his death cert. he listed his parents names: James B Stephenson and his mother as Malinda Henderson. (Born AL) People have told me Malinda's tomb stone reads Box. His death cert. has her name as Malinda Henderson. Note: On Ancestry you can look directly at Andrew Jackson Stephenson death certificate.( some one actually scanned Andrew Jackson Stephenson death cert. for Ancestry .com)

Malinda is buried in Crowley Tx. at the Crowley Cemetery. ( I was told it reads Malinda Box)???

1880 census ( for Tarrent Co. Tx. ) had T. J. Box (my great grand father) listed as fourth cousin to Andrew Jackson Stephenson(head of house) In the house hold at that time with A. Jack Stephenson, N.E. (Nancy Eugenia my great grand mother who married her 4th cousin Thomas J Box) Wm. H stephenson , Mary Stephenson sister in law, S. C Stephenson nephew, Etta F. Stephenson niece, and Tom J, Box (My great grandfather ) listed as 4th cousin to head of house.

My question is did Malinda Henderson first mary a Box?And then a Stephenson. Why would she have been buried under the name of Box?"

I could be wrong...and it may have been people assumed her last name was Box...since her son in law is listed as a cousin.

If anyone has any records of a Malinda Henderson...who married a James B Stephenson...please contact me or reply.

Thanks,
Barbara
Don,

Do let me know when you get your results. I would be most interested in knowing more about any fairly close UK participant matches that might result. If you are able to post your results on ysearch.org when they come in, that would be incredibly helpful too.

As I mentioned previously, the documentary evidence we presently have shows that our John Stephenson (d. 1727; md. Elizabeth Edwards) arrived in Lancaster County, VA in 1678 to dispose of his father's land on his mother's behalf. He sold the Lancaster County land in 1679, and was designated as being in Isle of Wight County, VA at that time. The elder John Stephenson (md. Christian) had come to Virginia prior to 1654, but apparently must have returned to the UK since there is no further record of him in Lancaster. If the earlier John was indeed identical with John Stephens of Old Rappahannock County, VA (which I suspect he was), then he returned to England about 1661/62. I think the family in Stepney Parish near London has some possibilities, but much more original research is needed. There is a John Stevens of Lymehouse in Stepney who left a will in the right time frame, but he doesn't appear to be Christian's husband.

Gary's closest matches at the 37 marker level through FTDNA have all been based in the US so far. Several of his closest matches have done tests to the 67 marker level, however. Would be interested to see how they match up with your pending results when they come in as well.

Keep me posted.

Mark
Thanks Mark and happy New Year,

You're right about the high count of haplogroup 1l among the Scandinavians. There's a great book by Bryan Sykes of Oxford University, called Saxons,Vikings and Celts, the Genetic roots of Britain and Ireland that speaks to this and other related facts. It's also corroborated by the information I have received through Genebase.com in England .

Once I receive the new information on the more definitive 64 STR test from British Genebase I will post the results. Now I am genetically linked to European relations within the last 25 generations (15 of 16 marker match). Many of those are Scandinavian as well as Englis Celtic from the the Bristish Isles. This last test will tighten the tolerances, and hopefully dial me into a tighter ethnic focus with greater closeness and fewer separating generations. I have reached out already to some of these distant genetic Euro-cousins to see what they in their histories, but I have not heard back from any yet.

I would also concur that while these genetic tests may place proximity, albeit very wide in scale geographically, they do not preclude migration prior to passage to America.

From what I have seen on John Stevenson, there was no boat manifest so no point of origin was available. Plus I cannot discount that several early Virginians came to Jamestown and across the James river to Isle of Wight by way of Bristish holdings in Bermuda, Jamaica, etc.

Hopefully with the new data and what will be more closer genetic Euro-cousins, I might find greater leads? It may not answer our question in the end, but it may provide more anedotal and circumstansial information to mull? It's quite the mystery.

Don

Don,

I forgot to add in my previous posting that the haplogroup I1 does have highest concentration in Scandinavia, and in the UK it is most prevalent in Scotland and northern England. It is certainly probable that our Stephenson ancestors ultimately originate in northern England or the lowlands of Scotland. Do bear in mind, however, that the more immediate immigrant origins of our line may or may not be based in those areas of the UK. Our Stephenson ancestors may have internally migrated within the UK prior to the 17th century. Most genetic results reflect deeper ancestral origins within the human family tree, but may not necessarily be very enlightening as to specific origins within recorded history which can be verified through documentation. The key to genetic testing will be to find UK participants with a very close match to the y-chromosome DYS values of our specific line, and whose ancestral origins are also well documented in a specific locality. Perhaps by going through a British testing firm, you will have a better chance of such a match, since a large percentage of participants using FTDNA tend to be American.

Mark

Dear Don,

DNA testing has already been performed on our shared Stephenson line. Gary Stephenson of Baltimore, Maryland, a direct descendant of Solomon Stephenson, Sr. of Johnston County, NC, was DNA tested at my urging through FamilyTreeDNA in 2010. His test results confirm that we are descended from John Stephenson (d. 1727; md. Elizabeth Edwards) of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, as his results closely match several individuals who descend from John's son Charles Stephenson. Gary's DNA tests show that our Stephenson ancestors were Haplogroup I1.

http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/stevenson/results

See Haplogroup I - Lineage II

Our ancestor John Stephenson/Stevenson (1656-1727; md. Elizabeth Edwards) of Isle of Wight County, Virginia was not the son of John Stevenson and wife Elizabeth Boyd of Glasgow, Scotland. This claim has been circulated widely on Ancestry and other places, and has no basis in fact whatsoever. John and Elizabeth (Boyd) Stevenson's son John married Janet Jack in Glasgow in 1679, and they had at least five children christened in Glasgow between 1682 and 1689, well after our ancestor John Stephenson was already established in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Recent research has shown that our ancestor John Stephenson was in Lancaster County, Virginia as early as 1678. His parents were John Stephenson/Stevenson/Stevens and wife Christian. In 1677, Christian Stephenson gave her son John Stephenson consent to sell his late father John's patent land on Slaughter's Creek in Lancaster County, Virginia. The elder John had acquired the land by patent in 1654. Christian Stephenson certified that her son John was 21 years of age on May 12th last, thus establishing his birth date as May 12, 1656. Lancaster County, VA Court Orders in May, 1678 show that John was present in that county by that time, and that he subsequently became indentured to John Carter and then later Robert Griggs, an official of the court. John sold his father's land to Thomas Paynes and Robert Griggs in February, 1678/79, by which time he was already residing in Isle of Wight County, VA. John acquired his first lands in Isle of Wight County, VA from John and Sarah Wakefield in 1680. John was claimed in 1682 as a headright by Rowland Bulkley for a land patent on Currowaugh Swamp in Isle of Wight County, VA. Bulkley also claimed as a headright in the same patent Titus Turner, who had also previously been an indentured servant to John Carter in Lancaster County, VA.

Circumstantial evidence strongly suggests that the elder John Stephenson/Stevenson who patented land in Lancaster County, VA in 1654 may be identical with John Stevens/Stephens of Old Rappahannock County, VA. Old Rappahannock County, VA was just north of Lancaster County, and later became the counties of Essex and Richmond. John Stephens patented land in Old Rappahannock in 1657, and left a will upon his pending return to England in March, 1661/62, disposing of his lands in Old Rappahannock County. There are no family members mentioned in the will, only individuals with whom Stephens was associated. Stephens will was probated in Old Rappahannock County, VA in February 1677/78, which is almost exactly the same time frame when the younger John Stephenson would have arrived to sell his late father's land in Lancaster County. There is also a record of a John Steventon sailing on a ship named "Ann" from London to Virginia between October and December, 1677. This may or may not be identical with our John Stephenson.

The jury is still out on the origins of the elder John Stephenson and his wife Christian, although I have found a couple with those names living in the correct time frame in Stepney Parish in Middlesex County, just outside the City of London, England. Stepney Parish was a parish in which many mariners resided, and the John Stephenson/Stephens there was listed as a shipwright. It would not be a stretch that he and his family might have ventured to Virginia, especially since the last reference to them in the Stepney Registers is the christening of a daughter born in 1648. While there is no proof that this couple is identical with the John and Christian mentioned in Lancaster County, Virginia records, the parish register of Stepney does record the burial of widow Christian Stevens of Ratcliffe in April, 1685. We know that the elder John Stephenson of Virginia was deceased by October, 1677 when his wife Christian executed her consent for the sale of her husband's Virginia land, so she certainly would have been a widow in 1685. Again, this is not proof of a connection, but certainly one strong possibility for the UK origins of our Stephenson line.

All of this information is described in greater detail in a GenForum message which I made in response to your posting there last year.

http://genforum.genealogy.com/stevenson/messages/3160.html

Mark
