Jesse Sterling

I am looking for information on Jesse Sterling, born circa 1803 in Georgia. He was married to Jane during the 1850 census in Randolph County Alabama. They had 2 kids, Martha and James. During the 1860 census in Randolph County Alabama, he was married to Frances. At that time there were 3 more kids, William, John, and Thomas. Thomas was my great-great-great-grandfather. I have hit a dead end at Jesse Sterling. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am traveling to Stirling, Scotland this summer and was hoping to find a connection to that beautiful country.

Thanks!

Thank you so much for this information and the clues for research. Please, let's stay in touch as (hopefully) new information surfaces. It is clear that all of these families were in the same areas at the same time.

The Paper Makers sounds fascinating. I am adding it to my reading queue, and thank you for mentioning it.

Carolyn, most of my Sterling information comes from the 18th century, but I think it could lay the groundwork for what you are looking at.

I have not seen Margaret before, but you might be interested to know that Levi's son, James Hunter Sterling, moved from PA to New Jersey as a very young man. He became an apprentice or ward to a James Hunter, either his maternal grandfather or uncle, in Burlington, New Jersey. Mr. Hunter was a successful businessman, and James Hunter Sterling evidently inherited the business and became a successful politician in Burlington, as well. That's as much as I know, but perhaps there are others on this list who can fill in the blanks.

Now let's move back in time to the earliest Sterling I could find who might tie into this family. The Sterling genealogy (Mack) tells us about a Major James Sterling, "born in Coleraine, North of Ireland, Jan. 6, 1742, came to America about 1754 with his uncle, James Hunter, a merchant of Philadelphia. He was accompanied or followed by his parents, as they died in America. He had two sisters who married and lived in America. He was of Burlington, N. J. (See page 1104.)" That fits, so it gives us something to work with.

Here's what I know so far about the Carters. Prior to his death, Charles Carter, Pamelia's maternal grandfather, took a very active interest in Levi's son, Seneca, and he seems to have worked in concert with others in Bucks (including justice of the peace Bird Wilson, the son of Founding Father James Wilson) to secure Seneca's care and future prospects. However unhappy his father, Levi, was, Seneca appears to have lived a long and very satisfying life.

Charles Carter seems to have ranged from Bucks to Chester to Burlington to . . . ? I haven't spent a lot of time trying to track him down, but I am currently reading a book titled "The Paper Makers: Early Pennsylvanians and Their Water Mill" by Jane Levis Carter in which she chronicles a Carter family that settled in Chester in 1689. It may not be the same Carter family, but the book is a fascinating read, making the connection between the fledgling paper making industry and the fledgling democracy which depended heavily on the availability of good quality paper to spread its ideas.

I hope others on the list know something of these Sterlings and Carters and Hunters, as well as the areas in which they lived. I'm excited about the prospect of learning more about this family!

No doubt we should be posting this to the Bucks County Forum. What I know about the generation of David German and Margaret Sterling is sketchy. I have much better information about their children and more recent generations. This is what I do know and can verify.

David was born in DE, according to census data post 1850. His family must have moved to the area of either Bucks County PA, or Hunterdon County NJ before he was an adult. The surname of Sterling for his wife, Margaret, has come down through all branches of the German family. Since most members of the German family lived in either of the two counties I mentioned for some generations, I have to assume that Margaret was from a family in one of those counties. There is a census record for a David Jerman/German in 1830, in Bucks County. The age is right, but the family members listed do not quite add up. Still, all of the children of David and Margaret indicated on later census data that they were born in PA. Based on their dates of birth, I would estimate that the family moved to Hunterdon County, NJ, between about 1835 and 1840, returning in 1850.

My descent is through their son, Alexander German. There is a book titled, A History of Land Ownership, Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, 1683-1850. In March, 1850, Alexander German bought 55 acres and converted it, evidently, to housing lots in the borough. There is a paragraph about him., and it said he came to Newtown from Hunterdon County, NJ, where he was a farmer. So, surely, there are land records in Hunterdon County and I need to go and find them. Alexander and all but his two youngest siblings -- who married after the family moved to Bucks County in 1850 -- married men and women from Hunterdon County, NJ. Some stayed there and others moved to Bucks County. Many of them are buried in the Newtown Cemetery.

It is said that Alexander's father, David, had lived in Bucks County before moving to NJ, but I have not been able to verify that, aside from finding the confusing census report from 1830. It is said, too, that he and Margaret lived with Alexander and his wife, Amelia Smith, in Newtown, after 1850, and that seems likely as they are buried there.

Based on the dates of death and ages listed on their very handsome grave marker, David was born ca. 1 Sep 1793 and Margaret ca. 20 March 1794. If Margaret was, in fact, a daughter of Levi Sterling, then her mother would have been Pamelia Carter. I have not located another Sterling family in the immediate area. Do you know of others? I believe there was a Sterling family in Berks County as well as Levi in Bucks County. I have not found Sterlings in Hunterdon County, at least not yet.

I have a copy of Margaret's death certificate. She died in Philadelphia, so her death was recorded there, naturally. The date of death and the notation that interment would be in Newtown, Bucks County, match so this is certainly "my" Margaret. Alas, there is no indication of her parents' names, nor does it say where she was staying in Philadelphia. All of her children lived in the two counties I have mentioned before, so I am wondering is she was living with a family member.

The whole thing is a puzzle. I plan to spend time this summer going through records in both counties and am hoping to have more of an answer.

Since there were not many Sterlings in Bucks at the time, this is very interesting information. Please tell me more about these people. I entered Levi into the DAR record as a patriot a few years ago; at the time, there was no other Levi Sterling listed.

Pamelia Carter is my ancestor, along with Levi Sterling and their son, Seneca Sterling. This was Levi's second marriage. The first was to Nancy Hunter in Newtown. There were two children from that union, James and Catherine. Here is a copy of Nancy's father, Patrick Hunter's, will; it includes other family names and locations:

Wills: Abstracts: Book 8: Bucks Co, PA 1808-1815

8.147. Patrick Hunter, Township and Town of Newtown, late Jailer 75 years of age.
April 19, 1810. Proved June 4, 1810.
Bro. Andrew Hunter and Enos Morris exrs.
2 Messuages and Lot of Land on which I live adj.
Newtown common, Lands of Archibald McCorkle and Thomas Buckman to Daus. Margaret and Sarah.
Residue of Estate in six shares, one to dau. Agnes who March Aaron Sutfan, deducting advancements.
1/6 to John and Margaret Hunter ch. of son James.
1/6 to dau. Margaret.
1/6 to Catharine Johnson and James Sterling, ch. of dau. Nancy retaining advancement
to their mother and father Levi Sterling.
1/6 to dau. Pamela Vanhart deducting account against her husband Michael Vanhart.
1/6 to dau. Sarah.
"Make no provision for son William he having gone and left no legal issue in this part of the World."
Wits: Archibald McCorkel, James Raquet.

There are huge gaps in Levi Sterling's biography, and the parts we do see are not flattering. He came away from his wartime service a badly wounded man in many ways.

The DAR has a free searchable data base online called the GRS. Levi Sterling does show as a recognized Revolutionary patriot through a son, George, with Pamelia Carter. I am wondering about other children. I have ancestors David German and wife, Margaret Sterling, who lived in the vicinity of Newtown, Bucks County. She was the right age to be a child of Levi Sterling. Are there sources I could check for other children? Also interesting is that two of David and Margaret's children, married Smiths. Daughter Sarah Ann German married Jeremiah Smith and her brother Alexander married Amelia Smith, This Smith family appears to have been from Hunterdon County, NJ, which is just across the river from Bucks
County, but some also lived in Newtown. Does any of this match with your information? I think it is very likely we are researching the same Sterling family.

Hi Folks:

I am a member of Ancestry.com but I just found the Sterling Somerset New Brunwsick Canada Connection. I am hoping you can provide some information.

My grandfather, Harrison Tilley Sterling, was born in New Brunswick, sometime in the 1880s or early 1890s. He wound up going to Temple University in Philadelphia, became a dentist, and settled in Greenville, South Carolina in the early 1900s. He married one Beatrice Thornton from Georgia and had five children--one girl, Beatrice; and four boys, Charles, Archibald, Jack, and Harrison, who was my father and who eventually settled in New York City where I live. My grandfather died in the early 1930s.

I remember as a child visiting two elderly women in 1960 who lived in New Brunswick and were somehow related to my grandfather.

My question is does any of this information resonate with any of the Sterling family still based in New Brunswick and who may have some knowledge of my grandfather or know they are related to him?

Look forward to hearing from you.

John Harrison Sterling, New York City

My John Sterling was born in Maryland about 1821 based on death date and reported age at death. He apparently died in Baltimore but was buried in Philadelphia, A church record shows hi father as George Sterling and mother as Lydia (??). Certif of Marriage to Anna Maria Ford Murray shows a middle initial of "S". Death notice of his wife identifies him as Capt John Smith Sterling althpough his Navy rank was able seaman. He might have had a prior marriage. Possible relatives: Walter & Ralph Sterling of Philadelphia.

I have been trying to make a connection between my great grandfather John Sterling [sometimes referred to as John Smith Sterling] and his Sterling origins in Maryland, especially Eastern Shore Maryland. He was born in MD in 1823 and, according an 1863 marriage record in Phila, his parents were George and Lydia Sterling. The 1863 marriage [apparently his second] was to Anna Maria Ford Murray, a widow. After that marriage he spent most of the rest of his life in Phila. He served in the US Navy during the War with Mexico and his occupation is variously identified as waterman, sailmaker, awningmaker, and mariner.

I have Sterlings from Bucks County PA as early as 1775. They were most closely connected with Smiths and Wilsons, also from PA, after they migrated to NW Ohio.

The earliest names I have (so far) are Levi Sterling, a Rev War soldier who enlisted from Bucks, and his children, Catherine Sterling Johnson and James Sterling. James later moved to Burlington, New Jersey, where he was a businessman and politician. Levi's son, Seneca Sterling, m. Mary Blaker, whose family were in Bucks County for several generations.

Levi Sterling married (1) Nancy Hunter, d/o Patrick Hunter of Newtown PA, and (2) Pamelia Carter, d/o Charles Carter of Bucks County PA.

Does anyone see connections here? I will check out the Caroline County Sterlings, Wilsons and Smiths. Thanks!

Maureen
Patsy,
I am trying to find the first wife of John Sterling (born 1785 son of Travers Sterling). His second wife was Lovey Wilson. On a lot of the ancestry trees, his children are mistakenly attributed to Lovey being their mother. Anyway, I found a marriage of John Sterling to Sophia Smith in 1811. They married in Caroline County, so normally I would ignore them as all my Sterling lines have been from Somerset county. However, I can't find them again in Caroline county or anywhere else after that marriage. So,has that name combination come up in any of your information? John's second marriage was in 1842 so Sophia would have died before then if she was the first wife.

Thanks!
Donna

So many names got changed when people migrated to the US. Migrants spoke their names in their native languages. That is how I believe the names Sterling and Easterling/Easterland are related. In french, Sterling was often pronounced Es-ter-lan. So the names were written as they sounded, which was not always the person's givien name. And many migrants could not write, so they could not correct the census takers. Just my findings.

Jerimiah was long dead by 1850.What little information I have able to find indicates that he died relative young. The census report for 1850 is not clear as to what Drusilla's status was. She was the last entry for that household. I think she may been a relation. But I am not sure what the relationship was. Drusilla Was in her mid sixties in 1850.Born around 1785.

Tom Goodwin

I am at brick wall and the Sterlings' seem to be part of it. In the 1850 census for 1850 I find a Martha Martin and her family. A member of that household is Drusilla Sterling. The Martin family have connections to Virginia Prior to the Civil War. I have found mention of a Drusilla Sterling in Preston County Va(WVA). She was listed as the daughter of Jerimiah Sterling. She is also mentioned(in the same source) as being a member of a Preston county church in that chruch's records. I haven't been able to locate a copy of those records. I have found one or two other mentions of her, however I have problems with their accuracy.

TOM Goodwin

I am looking for connections to a family of Martins I found in the 1850 Census for Nicholson Township, Fayette County, There was a Drusilla Sterling in that household. She was about 65 years old (Born about 1785+/-). I have found on line references to a Drusilla Sterling, daughter of Jeremiah Sterling. I believe the Head of the Household,Martha Martin, was related to Drusilla. The census does not show a relationship. Martha, was a Widow in 1850. One of Martha's daughters was named Joanna (Already Married in 1850). Another Mary and of course Drusilla. This is my brick wall.

It's been 10 years since this thread, so perhaps there is some new info? :)

I am also looking for information on this family.
William Sterling m. Elizabeth Peck and had a son, Alexandre William (Guillaume) Sterling. I have Alexandre's birth at about 1813 and death at 10 Jan 1908 in Kent, Ontario.

Alexandre married Catherine Seguin dit Laderoute (d/o Joseph Seguin dit Laderoute and Archange Campeau). They had a son, William b. 13 Jan 1831 in Tilbury, Kent, Ontario and died 27 Sep 1885.

William Sterling m. Rosalie/Rosana Dubois (d/o Hyacinthe Dubois and Rosalie Faubert)

any info is appreciated. I've heard this lineage of STerlings originated in Scotland.
Cheers,
Kristin
