I believe my wifes family is also connected to the St Jore de Sergerie Can you help explain why they have two surnames? She always though it was De La Sergerie, but doing more research it looks like its the St Jore dit Sergerie (not sure if it any differant).

Her line is Felix Sergerie who married Angelle Grenon.

Dave

Please respond.
I am just starting to look into my ancestry. It would be my father's side of the family and my father and his sisters are all deceased so any info is better than none.

St. George or St. Jore from Québec to Minnesota

I've been researching St. George families in Minnesota since 1997.

My own particular St. George family comes from Québec. The original family name was St. Jore dit Sergerie.

In about 1855 Joseph St. Jore dit Sergerie and his wife Marie Louise Vaillancourt left Québec and were living in Cleveland, Ohio. They and their children lived in Huron County, Michigan (ca.1863-1881) and settled in Duluth, Minnesota in 1881.

The family name appears to have officially changed to St. George sometime after 1864.

Most St. George families from Québec do not come from the St. Jore dit Sergerie family, but descend from the Laporte dit St-Georges families, a much larger family. The first Laporte dit St-Georges appeared in Québec circa 1650, roughly 100 years before the first St. Jore dit Sergerie arrived in about 1747. Linking my St. George family to the St. Jore dit Sergerie family came as a big surprise, and might suggest an alternative route for a few others who may have been trying to link their St. George families to Québec ancestors.

The St. Jore dit Sergerie line has its origins in Normandy, France in the modern department of Manche. More details of my ongoing research can be found on my webpage at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mstgeorge/

There were other St. George families in Minnesota in the 19th century who were probably descended from the Laporte dit St-Georges families. To my knowledge none of these families have yet been successfully researched back to their proper Québec ancestry. But they are almost definitely part of the Laporte dit St-Georges.

These other families continue to be of interest to me as I have strong evidence that my St. George family knew some of these other St. Georges.

I'm also interested in other St. Jore families from around the world as well as other St. Georges from the U.K. So I'll remain tuned in here. Feel free to write privately anytime.

Sincerely,
Michael

Timothy,

We are probably related, no doubt. As you may or may not know almost all Laportes and St.Georges in North America descended from Jacque de Laport dit St-Georges - the Canadian government had two surname familys stop using them in the 1870-1888. Please go to the family website at:http://www.genealogie.org/famille/laporte/en/home.html.
Also look up my geneolgy web site if you haven't already seen it. My grandfather was from St.Jean de Maitha near Montreal (as are many St.Georges and Laportes) and my gggrandfather's name was Charles. I think I had a great aunt named Ida. I will check. Hmmmmmm.

Get back to me.

Mike St.George

Dear Ms. Walters: I am delighted to hear from you. My father was born in Holden, Mass. as you can probably tell but many St.Georges, including my now deceased grandmother and grandfather were from St.Jean de Matha, Quebec. You must visit the Laporte-St-Georges web site: http://www.genealogie.org/famille/laporte/ and learn all about the "St.George" heritage. I only learned several years ago. We are most likely very distant cousins. All "St.George" or "St-George" or "St-Georges" (there are a variety of spellings and the French do not pronounce the "s", as I have learned). You will find the St.Georges and LaPorts or all most likely related as they once shared a common double surname with members taking one surname or the other. The website is fascinating and our family pool is very large. Look at my tree and the web-site above and let me know when you think you have found a link. It will be this summer, I am afraid, before I can do anymore serious work on my geneology. The French St.Georges are looking for all the US St.Georges they can find and will be glad to hear from you. If you want to reply directly send an e-mail to me at stgeorge@stgeorgelaw.com. Best wishes!!
Mike St.George

You'll note from my tree that Paschal St. George had two sons named Louis, one born in 1836 [found baptism record in Quebec] and one born c. 1842 [found in 1855 census for Essex County, NY]. I don't know anything further on either of these two people. Actually, there was a third Louis in that family, my gg grandfather George was baptized Louis George. About 1862, Paschal and his family, except for George and Joseph moved to Wisconsin. I only discovered this a few years ago, and have not traced much of their whereabouts after that. Paschal died shortly after moving to WI and I know Josephte his wife died there also. Eli, their son, died in Arkansas in the Civil War.

Re: St. George, Ireland to ?Missouri

In my travels I have found St. George to be mainly French, Descended from the Laportes who came to Canada to settle the land for the King. Although I have seen reported an Italian St George. I believe this was shortened from Santgorgio. (I'm off on the spelling but it's something to that affect) There is also an Irish Line descended from Lord St. George. it seems that he was a Norman back in the middle ages. His family lands and lordship were transferred to Wales and then to Ireland. This Family was originally French Protestant and Highly Aristocratic. Their offspring intermarried with the Irish Catholics and were banished from the lands. they migrated to the Massachusetts area by way of Nova Scotia. This family seems to still be fairly small. I have also been informed that there was a St. George family that settled in the Pa. area during that is also French. (also fairly small in size) . I have also seen St. George families from Barbados, Australia, and I believe from an area that surrounds China. ( I saw this posted one posted once somewhere and have not been able to locate it again) But for the most part the St. George families in America seems to be of the French Canadian descent with some Native American mix. There is also several spellings for this Family which include St.George, St George(without the period), St Georges, Stgeorge, Saint George, and now Von George (a family name change). I would be interested in hearing about
your St. George Family. The more info you post the better chance that someone may connect with you. Good luck in your hunt.

St. George, Ireland to ?Missouri

My husbands mother was Dolores Agnes St.George, b. in St. Louis, MO. Her father was Perry (Percy) James St. George b. 1886 in St.Louis. He had 3 sis's; Mary, Dora (moved to Wash. state), & Kitty. Perry's father was Pierce & he was from County Cork, Ireland., m. to Catherine Daly b. in Ireland. Pierce d. 30 Dec. 1880 in St. Louis & it was said his father was a James. I found it hard to believe the name St.George was really Irish, I thought it might be English. Anyone have any info. on this? I did have an e-mail last March from a Roy St.George in Australia, but he didn't have anything on this line. Thanks.

Hello Mike,
I have just recently been looking into my St. George roots. My grandmother was Mary Francis St. George and she was born in MA. around 1877. Her father was Frank St. George and her mother was Matilda Bolton Thurston who by coincidence I guess was also born in Holden, MA. in 1847. On the 1880 census they lived in Charlton county, Worchester, MA. Her brother Frank was listed and he was 1 yr. old. My father always told me she had other brothers. I think there names were David and Edward but I'm not sure. On the census it did say that Frank's parents were from Canada but didn't say what city or town. Eventually they moved to RI. because I have Matilda's death certificate from 1909. My grandparents lived there as well and my father was born there. I really haven't found much out at this point especially about any ancestors in Canada but would be very interested if you have any info that could help my search. Looking forward to hearing from you. Lori Walters

Bill I do think I am Related to your Family Through Louis St. George born 1836, son of Paschal St. George. I have have found two Louis St. George's. My Great Grandfather was Louis St. George. I have found him in the 1920 Federal Census living in Minnesota. He was 57 at the time. wich would give a birth of 1863. Listed as living with him was a cousin by the Name of Henry Germain. The other LOuis St. George I found was also in Minnesota in the 1860 Census.
He was 31 yrs old. He was living with a Caroline St. George(Wife ??? age 24), Charles St. George (son?? age 2) Henry Germain age 34, and Lynett Boutillte ???? My theory is that Louis and Henry from 1860 are the fathers of the men in 1920.
It is also said thruogh family that Louis had an uncle by the name of Ambroise. Some of what my Family has said has been un-verifiable. What do you think ?????? I would love to Learn more on my family. If you think there is a relation I would be happy to give you what I have from Louis on down to update your records, If you want.

Would you happen to have any info on sons or daughters of Charles From Quebec. I have been trying to locate info on both a Louis St. George and an Ida St. George. Louis Immigrated about 1865, and Ida Immigrated in 1880. According to the 1920 Census Ida's Father was born in Massachusetts. These two people were First cousins, I have some of their descendants but would like to be able to go back further than them. It is also reported that they were both 1/4 Native American Indian. It is also said that they were connected to the Laportes. Any info you may send along my way would be greatly Appreciated.

Ida's married name and maiden names were the same, Both being St. George. I have two possible locations, One from a family Bible filled out by her Daughter-in-law (Thelma St. George) that stated only Ida From Iowa. The second being from an uncle who stated Ida and Louis immegrated from Canada. I tend to believe my uncle more than the Bible. My line of the St. George family seems very hard to trace. Ida is supposed to have indian blood in her. I have heard this from Thelma St. George, and also a distant cousin.

STGEORGE lineage in Quebec

My great-grandfather, William St. George was born in Crookston, MN in 1882 to Anthony (Antoine?) and Cornelia/Cordelia DUVAL. They had emigrated from Quebec in 1854 and 1856, respectively (based on the US census). She came to the US with her parents so I was able to follow that line easily enough. Anthony came to the US apparently without his parents, but was neighbor to Joseph St. George, 3 years his elder, who was probably his brother. They were living in Wells, Rice County, MN in 1860. I have been unable to find the names of their parents or their town of origin in Quebec.
