Rescued a photo (Lynchburg, VA) of a toddler; maybe in the 1940-50's & it is labeled George Bickers Stiff. If this is a family member, pls let me know so I can get it a good home. This is how I earn karma in the hopes that my families' photos and Bibles surface some day:) Deborah

Hi Cyril,

Sorry for the late reply.

I must emphasise I have done no work in the field as such and the only info I have is from other researchers.
I cannot see where else Daniel Stiff could fit. John Stiff 1672 3rd wife Elizabeth died in 1715, she had 3 known children with John...jacob 1703, Jane 1706 and Susan 1709. This leaves a gap of 6 years before she died. how do we know daniel was born in 1709? If it is from his death record this would not necessarily be accurate. Could he have been born in,say, 1812?
Jacob 1703 daughter Elizabeth 1732 was married in 1754 and one of the witnesses was a daniel Stiff. Probably quite usual for an uncle to be a witness at his niece's wedding?

Daniel apparently married thrice, and I assume it is his first marriage that no one seems to have any knowledge of. i notice from his 2nd and 3rd marriages none of his children are called John. given that john is quite a common name it is likely that one of his first children was a John, named after his father perhap?

I have put Daniel on my tree hoping to provoke a response.

sorry for my ramblings and I look forward to hearing your comments.

Best Wishes

Andy ( a probable distant cousin )

ps my Email: cascademanchester@hotmail.com

Hi my name is Cyril Stiff and have been reading your discussions with interest,
I am descended from:
Daniel 1709-1813 & Mary Day 1741
William 1768-1833 & Susan King 1762-1841
William 1793-1878 & Mary Drake 1799-1876
Joseph 1827-1905 & Emily Winter 1824-1882
Walter 1856-1935 & Ellen Spalding 1853-1893
Walter Thomas 1885-1966 & Kate Edwards 1888-1942
Stanley George 1918-1991 & Ivy Florence Canham 1920-1999
i along with many have not found Daniels parents,
the only "Assumption" i know that is not the way to do this but most of the indications fit is John Stiffe 1672 was his father but as you have said it could not have been Sarah King, so Elizabeth could only be the answer with the information that is available.
i have been to Norton to see if there is a Gravestone but to no avail, i even managed to see the registers in the church, but they did not have them going that far back,
sorry for butting in on your querys, but the plot is just as thick asbefore.
would share any info if required
cyril

I am the granddaughter of Henry Clyde Stiff. My father is Alonzo Bural Stiff who died 7/4/2005, in Brawley, CA. I do have some history on this family and still correspond with John Jones who is a cousin in OK. I do know that Henry Louis, my great grandfather was a constable in Broken Bow, OK. Henry Louis had a son Henry Birl and my grandfather was the son of Henry Birl. I had a bible of James Stiff which I have given to my son Richard White who lives in Payette, ID. If I can help you with anything, I will see what I can come up with in my records.

Hi denise,

Thanks very much for your reply. I have suspected that John Stiff 1672 was Daniel's father. A daniel Stiff was a witness at Jacob Stiff (1703) wedding. However i think Daniel's mother must be John's 3rd wife Elizabeth. Daniel was born in 1709 and sarah king died in 1698.

Please may I ask your source of information.

Kind regards

Andy

Regrets, I don't have more info on Margeret. Born 1894 in Collin county texas, died in 1974. I have her brother Roy Stiff born in 1889 in Collin County texas. Her mother Luella Bradley married Clint Stiff in 1886. She was previously married and is the Mother of my Great grand father Charley Swann. I don't know her first husband( My GGGF)thus my research. Luella,Clint,Roy,Mary and Charles can easily be found in the 1900 census (McKinney,Collin county Texas)Luella is a bit more difficult to find; her parents are Daniel S. Bradley 1833-1862, Catherine ? 1835-? She was born in Texas abt.1866 died 1901 however you'll get strange dates of birth in other files i.e. born 1801-1803 which isn't likely. If you turn anything up of interest on Luella please let me know. The Stiff bloodline is fairly easy to research behind Clint U. Stiff but if you need anything let me know. Thanks Patrick A.
The Stiff family lived in McKinney,Texas not in Mckinley. Maybe a typo, but an important one. I will look to see what I have on her for you. Margaret/Mary was the half sister of my great grandfather Charley Edgar Swann. Daughter of CLint and Lula Stiff. Clint had an interesting life in Dallas,TX he was a clothing salesman and owned a saloon and boarding house on Elm street with a man named Watts. I'll see what I can find on her and post you back.

Margaret Elaine Stiff married Harper Lake in August, 1915. She was the daughter of Clint Stiff of McKinley, Texas, and the granddaughter of Captain Edward Stiff.

I have found Harper’s grave and Margaret is not buried beside him. I am trying to determine if they were divorced or if she died while they were married. Does anyone know what happened to Margaret?

Re: Elizabeth B. Stiff-Married Smith Bennett, Middlesex Co., VA-1798

Thanks. Here is some new/additional info:

Smith Bennett died in the late-1820s in Middlesex Co., VA, and a John R. Smith was associated with his estate. Smith Bennett had been associated with the estate of a John Bennett in Middlesex in 1820, but the relationship between these two Bennett men is not known. An apparent son of the above John R. Smith named George H. Smith married a granddaughter of Smith Bennett and his wife Elizabeth Baker Stiff (the bride was a daughter of William Bennett and his wife Adeline Miller).

Smith Bennett's apparent sister Mary Bennett married John Brown in Middlesex Co., VA in 1805 (and it APPEARS that this John Brown had come into Middlesex from Essex Co., VA....and he was probably out of the Francis Brown "I" who died in Essex Co., VA in 1691/1692). The mother of Mary Bennett (and apparently Smith Bennett, as well) was Mrs. Winifred "Winnie" Bennett. Winnie's "Bennett husband" is not known, but she married second James Owen in Middlesex in 1798/1799. James Owen must have died before the 1810 Middlesex census, since Winnie/Winifred Owen appeared as the head of her household on the 1810 and 1820 Middlesex censuses.

It appears that John Brown (died by the late-1820s in Middlesex) and Mary Bennett adopted a "Smith infant" and renamed him Smith W. Brown (born 1817-1818...probably in Caroline Co., VA, per my research). The Christopher T. Brown who was on the 1840 Middlesex Co., VA census was apparently an older brother (by birth or by adoption) of Smith W. Brown, and one of the males in Christopher's home in 1840 was probably Smith W. Brown (the age range on the 1840 Middlesex census was correct for this to have been Smith W. Brown). Christopher T. Brown had been on the Essex Co., VA census in 1830. The 1810 Middlesex census had shown John and Mary (Bennett) Brown with no children (five years after their marriage), but the 1820 Middlesex census showed them with four males and two females, with all six being under the age of 10.

Smith W. Brown married Susan Hill Garrett, a daughter of Richard and Nancy (Taff) Garrett, in Middlesex in 1841. Smith W. Brown and his family moved to Gloucester Co., VA before the 1850 census.

Elizabeth B. Stiff (James Stiff (4), William Stiff (3), Elizabeth Clark (2), Edward Clark (1))
was born Sept. 10 1778, probably in or near Middlesex VA. She died in 1852. She was married to Smith Bennett, may have lived in Virginia. One child listed William L. Bennett.
