Re: Stilmans in Massachusetts, 1700's

Maureen -

I, too, am descended from the same line. Daniel, Peter, Samuel, Edward, etc. is my lineage. I requested information about Daniel from the folks at the Gloucester Archives back in 2009. I have attached their reply below. I hope it helps.

PS - I have Daniel and Rachel's marriage taking place on October 15, 1761, not September 15.

Brian
__________________

Dear Sir:

There is very little known about Daniel Stillman. He was warned out of town on Feb. 8, 1762 [Selectman's Bk 3, p.89] but it does not say to where, from whence he came [this was a standard procedure when someone moved into town, to announce that, should he need public assistance, that assistance would come from the town whence he came, and not from Gloucester.]

On his marriage to Rachel Lurvey on Oct. 15, 1761: "Daniel Stilman, resident" [ie- he was a resident but not a citizen, nor was he a sojourner. ] He perhaps wasn't all that prosperous because in 1770 and 1773 his taxes were abated, but he seems to have stayed in town. I can find no death for this original Daniel Stillman, nor any indication of where he came from. He and Rachel had several children: son Eleazer shows up in the Overseers of the Poor records in 1817 getting 75 cents a week for several weeks, and "P Stillman" got 2 foot wood, delivered May 6, 1817. Then there was a letter from Newburyport in the Overseers of the Poor records, from June 1818, discussing the support of the family of Eliezer Stillman, as if perhaps he had moved to Newburyport. [Eliezer was a twin son of Daniel and Rachel, bp. 13 Apr. 1777.]

There are several Daniel Stillmans: Daniel Stillman died in Ipswich, in Jail, by suicide, on Sept 12, 1826, ae ~ 45. - probably the son of Daniel and Rachel: Daniel, b. Mar. 27, 1786, in Gloucester, and married to Betsey Joseph, Gloucester, 25 Dec. 1814. Then there is Daniel Mace Stillman, b. Glou, Nov. 24, 1802, who married Rhoda Abbot in 1827, in Gloucester, and had several children.

Daniel Stillman does not show up in the Glouc. 1771 tax valuations. In the 1814 list of voters in Gloucester, there is Peter Stilman crossed out, Daniel Stilman crossed out, Peter Stilmam. and Daniel Stilman [not crossed out - so it means that perhpas there were once, as in 1813, 4 Stillmans, of whom 2 died in the past year??]

But none of these leads us back to the origins of Daniel Stillman who married Rachel Lurvey. There are no Stilman/Stillman births in all of Mass. between 1730-1750. There were Stillmans in New Haven CT and Philadelphia, but no clear birth of your Daniel. It is more than likely that he came across the Atlantic around 1760.

Let us know if you have any further clues or questions.

Sarah Dunlap
Gloucester Archives

I keep finding confusing data on the marriage of Frances "Fanny" STILLMAN ... she married BARKER WELLS not BARTON Wells. If you receive this, please reply to me and I'll forward your email to Pat. I'm not sure how much information she needs. My father is still living (age 94)and would love to get more information about his family as he knows of no other living relatives.

Isaac Stillman - N.J. and Illinois

I am trying to prove that Isaac Stillman b.~1823 N.J., married to Corneliette Conway 1847 in Bedminster, N.J. - but lived in McLean Co., Illinois by 1860 - is a brother to my GGrandmother Patience Hester Shilling nee Stillman b. N.J. 1835 , father Joseph Stillman and mother???? and lived in Logan Co., Ill.. The 1900 census Broadwell, Logan shows Isaac boarding with Patience Murphy (Shilling/Stillman). I sent for his death record to Logan and received a death date of 7 Oct 1900. No parents names are given and it also says he and his parents were born Ohio which I believe is incorrect. He was buried by Boyden &Son, undertakers at Union Cemetery, Lincoln. Isaac lived in McLean Co.,and was near the Mary Peasley nee Stillman family as well as George Fox Stillman but I am having trouble establishing a definite relationship. If anyone has any advice or info to offer it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for posting the link. That is a nice comprehensive site. The earliest mention I have encountered of those marriages is in "The Stillman Family in the U.S.A." by Henry L. Jones (Wellsville, NY, 1896). While 1896 is early enough to have those marriages recalled by the living children of Jesse Stillman, I still am looking for documentation (church records or family bibles) to confirm the relationship. I think my next step may be visiting my alma mater Alfred University to research the Stillman papers that are archived there in the library.

Jesse STILLMAN (d. 1862) m. Susan ROBINSON?

Any suggestions or advice? The narrative below is taken from my Robinson Genealogy website at

http://sites.google.com/site/robinson1857/susan

Mrs. Susan Robinson, the mother of Isaac G. Robinson, is buried in the Johnstown Cemetery adjacent to Isaac & Katherine. Her headstone is inscribed with the epitaph, "Mrs. Susan Robinson / Died February 28, 1864 / Aged 84 Years / Where with to is my mother's rest? She has gone to enjoy the blessed."

Since there is no evidence of her residence in Johnstown, where was she and where was her husband? Records indicate that both Isaac's father & mother were born in New York State, and we know that Susan's husband was named Daniel. That's about all we had.

There are genealogical writings and postings (i.e. The Stillman Family Genealogy Home Page ) that cite a Susannah Greenman who was born on August 12, 1780 in New York and lived in Stephentown (Rensselaer Co.), NY. She was apparently first married to a Mr. Robinson abt. 1799. Her second marriage was to Jesse Stillman on July 6, 1833 and they lived in DeRuyter (Madison Co.), NY. She reportedly died in 1864 while another source notes more specifically that she died on February 28, 1864 (the same day that Isacc's mother died). When we followed the sources to the core, we found that while most were solid, the key pieces (concerning her marriage to a Robinson and her death date) were not cited well enough to verify Susannah Greenman as Isaac's mother. However, there are enough coincidences to believe that this really could be a match. For example, in the Greeman Family in America by Caroll W. Greenman (p. 41), William Greenman's will is cited as listing amongst his eight children:

"489. Susannah, b.____________ d.______________ in Gloversville, New York.
m. 1st Robinson, 2nd _________ Crandall."

We did get a copy of the will and although it does cite Susannah's name, I do not know where the marriage and death information came from. So it goes.

Isaac and Katherine started their lives together in Watervliet (West Troy), NY which is not far from where Susan Greenman lived. The Deed of March 2, 1836 is between Isaac & Katherine Robinson and Reynolds Greenman. Reynolds Greenman was the son of Susan Greenman's brother, William Gardner Greenman. What better way to help out your younger cousin and his new wife than to sell him a lot in West Troy? It only seems to help the hypothesis.

The clincher came recently in the insolvency papers of Daniel Robinson where we found that Crawford B. Sheldon (husband of Abigail Maxson) was appointed the assignee to Daniel's creditors. Abigail was Susan Greenman's niece, and we are fairly certain that she and her husband were living with Daniel Robinson & Family in Woodstock, NY (U.S. Federal Census 1820). Considering all of the information and the research of other genealogists, we have confirmed that Susan Robinson was in fact Susannah Greenman.

Now we must tackle the theory that Susan Greenman's second husband was Jesse Stillman. The couple was apparently married on July 6, 1833, but we need to confirm this. Jesse & Susan Stillman do appear in the census records living in DeRuyter, NY. Jesse died in 1862 in Otselic, NY, and since it was a late-in-life marriage, Susan (then 82 years old) probably would have moved back in with a child (undetected by census records). The pieces fit, but we're looking for some good old-fashioned documented proof, and that's what we're searching for now.

Re: German immigrants

Hello Bill,
Thanks for responding. I am also heavily leaning towards the connection with the New Jersey Steelmans, however I did an oral interview this weekend with an 81 year old cousin who lived with my great grandparents in Plymouth, NC for a time and she was told that there were immigrants that "came from Germany to Tyrrell County". Certainly could be that the story morphed over time from Sweden to Germany. Anyway never heard that before. I noticed on the Stillman website there is a Joannis Stillman from Prussia - where did that info come from?
Best
Anna DuPen

A good source of Stillman info online is www.stillman.org. I descend from George Stillman & Lady Jane Pickering, as well.

Go to the Tacoma Public Library, up to the Northwest Room where all of the genealogy stuff is. As you go through the entrance to the room, turn left down the first aisle, go about 2 paces and turn right facing the books. You'll be looking at family genealogies. The Stillman Family book is right in that area. It has been several years since I've looked at it, but it should be along there somewhere at about eye level. It's a big book, containing 1000s of names. It's done in a descending generational format with numbers for each person. The one drawback with this book is that it has no page numbers, so you can't just go to the index and look up "Stillman, Waite" and turn to the page where his info is. Don't shy away from it because of that, though. It is a gold mine! If your North Carolina Stillmans are descended from George Styleman and Lady Jane Pickering, this book will tell you. You just have to put in some time with the book. Come prepared to spend several hours looking. Maybe it won't take that long to find what you're looking for, but be prepared anyway. There are errors in it, just as there are in many published compilations. My 2nd great grandmother is in it as the last in her line of descendancy, and some of her info is incorrect, like the name of her husband. Note of interest: Did you know that George Styleman also went by George Pickering, because of his wife's title?

I would love to receive a copy of this booklet as well. I have a NC Stillman line that I am trying to tie back to either the NJ Steelmans or the New England Stillmans and have been stalled forever.
Anna DuPen

I also descend from Maxsons & Stillmans.

This may be a clue to help in your search:

I descend through an Elizabeth Stillman who married Daniel Burdick, Jr. (NY). Elizabeth has a Benjamin Stillman in her line as one of her ancestors. I also have a Waite Stillman who married Wealthy Maxson. Because of naming patterns- the person you are looking for could also descend from the same lines, as "Waite" is not a very common name.

I won't be able to look through my info for a few days, but I'll see if I find a reference that could help.
