From the information I have found online is that only two brothers came from England to USA. Their names were Stylewell. The older brother had money and paid for the younger brother to come with him. Some how when they got to america they split ways. Both changed their names. Older brother changed his last name to Stillwell and the younger brother to Stilwell. From what I found ALL Stil(l)well's are related and is all traced back to England.

Walter, I was wondering which John Stilwell you are referring to in the title of the book? (Of course, there were many John Stilwells in the Stil(l)well family.) The title is interesting to me, though. My great-grandmother's maiden name was Stilwell. One of her great-grandfathers, John Daniel Stilwell (1737-1823), left America during the Revolution and settled in Canada, where he died. (New Brunswick, I believe.) He did this for numerous reasons: 1. He was loyalist who supported Britain during the war. 2. He was a Quaker and, therefore, a pacifist. He refused to fight. We believe that some of his children and other American Stilwell relatives might have crossed over into Canada in the 1770s with him to avoid the Revolution, so it's possible that some Stilwells in Canada are related to the American branch of the family.

Confusion about father of Jeremiah Stilwell b 1739.

My ancestor is Lemuel J. Stilwell (born c 1780 Md or Pa - boundary dispute may account for this confusion - died 1853 in Preston Co Va/became WV in 1863).

His father was Jeremiah Stilwell (born c 1739 - died 1821 in Monongalia Co, Va/ later WV. He is buried in Morgantown, Monongalia Co, WV).

Most records indicate that Jeremiah's father was Elias Stillwell of the Tonoloway Settlement and of which a good bit is written. However, the book "History of the Stilwells" by Benjamin Marshall Stilwell published in New York in 1876 has me rather confused. On page 282, he states that the son of Jeremiah Stilwell (b 1676, 5th son of Capt. Richard Stilwell) had a son named Jeremiah who was born in 1725 and settled in Morgantown, Va. (now WV).

Thus I am stumped as to whether the father of Lemuel is Jeremiah b.1739 (son of Elias) or Jeremiah b. 1725, (son of Jeremiah b 1676). Both Jeremiah's are rather old to be Lemuel's father so there may be even another Jeremiah in there.

Also note:
1. Lemuel's death records states his parents were Jeremiah and Catherine. The Jeremiah which is the son of Elias did have a wife named Catherine (1745-1804).
2. Lemuel lived in Preston Co which is next to Monongalia Co. Both counties are close to the Tonoloway area.
3. There were 2 Jeremiah Stilwells living in Morgantown - I believe them to be the father and brother of Lemuel. The younger Jeremiah c 1786- 1855 was the son of Jeremiah and C. Stilwell.

So, any clues as to which is the "correct" Jeremiah father of Lemuel?

Thank you.

Looking for LJ Stilwell, father of AW, hubby of Elizabeth Va/WV/Md/Pa

I am seeking information on L. J. Stilwell and his wife Elizabeth. Records of their son indicates LJ was born in Maryland and Elizabeth in Pa. Their son was born in 1826 so they were born sometime around 1800.

The only mention of their name I have found comes from the marriage record of their son, Armsey Washington Stilwell (he went by AW).

AW was born March 1826 in either Md or Pa. His marriage certificate says Washington Co, Maryland, some census records say Md, other records say he was born in Pa.

AW was married in 1856 in Preston Co, Virginia (became West Virginia in 1863). By 1860, AW was living in Taylor Co, Va/WV where he remained until his death 13 June 1907.

I have no idea of LJ's full name. Thanks in advance for any help.

Daniel Stillwell in Albany County, New York 1800's

Hi Tom,

I'm trying to sort out the Daniel Stillwell's around Albany New York.

The family I'm looking for is Daniel Stillwell and wife Anastasia 'Anna' ( Whelan? ) who are in the 1870 and 1880 US Census for Albany NY. Their children are James b 1866, Daniel Jr. b 1868, Frank born 1870, Arthur b 1874, Uriah b 1877. From a cousin's letter in 1885, I know there were two daughters also ( One may be Anna in the 1910 Rensselaer NY Census with brother Frank. Anastasia ' Anna ' Stillwell died in 1887 in NY, she was born in Ireland @ 1846.

Sometimes her husband Daniel Stillwell's birthyear is 1827, sometimes 1838. I've found a Daniel Stillwell with a Civil War record from 1861 - 1865 , two enlistments - mustered out in Annapolis MD 1865. His birthyear is 1838.

I don't know if this Daniel Stillwell had multiple wives , at Anastasia's death, her death certificate lists her as married, no name for the husband.

I see a Daniel and Mary Stillwell from 1850 - 1870 Census in Gilboa,Schoharie NY his birthdate is 1827 in NY. Their children are Alida b 1850 , Elvina b 1852,Sarah b 1856, Syras b 1858, John C. b 1861, Mary b 1886.

In the 1860 Albany Census there is a Jeremiah Stillwell b 1810 NY, and wife Rebecca b 1815 NY. Their children are Daniel b 1837, William b 1841, Hannah b 1845, Arabella b 1848, Jeremiah b 1850, Ellen b 1855, Margaret b 1857.

Is this William your ancestor ?

Oddly there is a 1905 Albany Census that I found on www.familysearch.org that lists a "Donical Stilell" age 77, sons James age 40, Donical age 38, Frank age 36, Arthuar age 34, Jerry age 21, and Wilbur age 16. If this is my 'Daniel Stillwell' he has come up with two more younger sons. I figure mispellings are helping to form a 'brick wall' for me.

Buried in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont NY below Albany is Anastasia Stillwell with sons James and Uriah Stillwell. From my 1885 letter, Anastasia is the niece of either James or Johanna Kenny Drew of Albany, her parents are James and Mary Whalen from the death certificate.

Thanks for any help, CY
I have an old photo of the cobbler shop on Alfreds Profile on my tree, I have also upload another pic of him circa 1940. Nan says he died of Cancer. I am going to take the pc over with bundles of pics scanned for her to see in the hope that theyu may jog her memory a little. She is quite interested in all the FH news I bring her and she wishes she could remember more, bless her. I have scanned ore photos of your Nan by the way. Apparantly I look like Rose..... but when I was a child I was always told that I was like my Great Aunty Madge, as I talk for England! I have a fair few pics of Madge, so once scanned will email them to you. Will also get Nan to share childhood stories as much as possible. Which of Madges Daughters are you the son of Tink or Bubbles? I have Pics of Elizabeth too.

Re the News Agents, will ask Nan next visit x

Thank you so much for your help. I will up date my tree as you have a lot of information here. My nan has never mentioned Phyllis or Kathleen but there is a sister Anne who nan didn't know too well I think because she would have been working by the time she was born in 1924.

I know that there was a newspapers or printers company not sure if Owen Stillwell and Pope rings any bells? but I very vaguely remember nan mentioning a papers business. I know she says Dad (Alfred A) was a cobbler and I think he had the shop I have a photo of on his profile.
Yes I am Madge's grandson.

I do not think that the smuggler story I mean is recent or in living memory. My guess is it would have been in the 18th Century. There may be another problem in the family!

Just for interest, I have submitted my DNA for analysis. I am hoping it may resolve some of the problems with a lack of records for some parts of the family history.

Also, regarding the Stillwells; I understood that they had one or more newsagents (indeed, I think one was/is called Stillwell's recently). What is the score there?

I know that Alfred Paffett was a cobbler at one point. I think my Nan had his lasts but I have not seen them (it) for years.

The other siblings of nellie and Alfred are all passed on now other than Barbara and my nan Eileen May who were only 4 and 5 when Nellie passed in 1932. Barbara lives in Scotland, she too is interested in family history, it seems we are all hitting a bit of a block in the same area! my main area of confusion is that Nellie is listed on 1901 census as living with her parents James and Emma with Mabel, Frederick, Emily as her siblings. However the birth certificate for Nellie shows her Father as William Henry Stilwell. I have made contact with a John Stilwell, who has James as the brother of a man called John Stilwell born 1834. Apparantly John Stilwell moved to Lancashire with the Railways after a family row? His family stayed in contact with Nellies younger sibling Mabel who married an Alfred also. Re smugglers - there are some criminal records on here, There is a Charles, Elizabeth and Alfred from the Hants area all of whom were listed as 'inmates'....maybe they were something to do with the smuggling! it needs further investigation, but I know there is something that 'happened' but nan just seems to block up if asked for details.......I think she prefers not to know! or for me to know - bless her she is 86 and sometimes she can recall stuff, but she can't remember names. To the best of my knowledge, there were 5 sisters, Anne, Madge, Barbara, Eileen and Rose. The brothers were Roy, Alfred and Dennis. I know the 3 brothers went to Australia and that Dennis died young at 44 of cancer.
You are a descendandant of Madge, I was wondering are you a grandchild of hers?

Ah bless you and thank you for logging a kinship, I knew Madge and I beleive, Rick her son is a keen Family History Researcher. Tho he does his tree on Genes Reunited. I am so keen to find out more and compare notes. YES I remember nan speaking of the smuggler stories, but she can't remember much detail as she says it was all passed on by the elder siblings and she has dementia now. She so misses her sister Roselyn aka Rose or Lyn and Madge. Nan was 4 when Nellie passed I didnt realise Madge was the eldest, I thought Anne was the eldest sister of five girls and there were brother Roy, Alf and Denny who went to Australia. Madge and Ted were my great uncle and aunt and we visited them in havant often. My mum has fond memories of her cousins Tink and Bubbles. I ..think there are ties to dutch/scandanavia area with Pafetts.... spelt many ways too, to add to confusion! Anything you could tell me about the family would be great to know as I love to talk to my nan about stuff like this and she may remember more if I trigger her memory.

Just logging a kinship... My ancestor was Madge Violet Paffett, the eldest of Nellie and Alfred. She had to bring up the children when the mother died.

Doest any of your family know of the Paffett legend of the French smuggler? Perhaps your nan knows? ust logging a Kinship.

Hello, there. I can't help you with your Nellie. My Stilwell family came here from England before the Rev. War and were from Wales, being refugee Huguenots for several generations, we believe - from records we can find. Two young brothers, either indentured or as "cabin boys" jumped ship somewhere on the Chesapeake Bay and headed inland - eventually settling with the Delaware Indian tribes along the Pamunky River and those areas of what is now Virginia. I do believe, however, that we must be related as both William and Henry are common names in my line...as is Catherine or Katherine...very common. My grandfather was a William, his ggrandfather was a Henry James, his father was a Richard William, etc. The names are still alive and well in my generation and my children's generation, too. Would be interesting to explore, for sure. Good luck in your quest. BarB

HI I am a Stilwell descendant and I am trying to trace my GGrandmothers Nellie K Stillwell born 1884-85 (AKA NELLIE CATHERINE STILWELL) family who were from Portsmouth Hampshire UK. Nellie was born in 1894-6 and was the daughter of William Henry Stilwell who lived and worked in the UK as an Insurance Superintendant. I am very keen to know more abt this family as Nellie was born in Liverpool tho all other siblings were born in Portsmouth or Southampton. Any help would be so appreciated.
