The Stinson family I am from, that is the one that went to Ohio instead of the south or New Hampshire, was spelled Stinson at least in 1815 as my great, great, great grandfather was from Ulster and we have a copy of his mustering out papers from the British Army. On this side of the Stinson family the lady who did the genealogy went to County Omagh but couldn't find the thread as the Presbytrian Church records in County Omagh were burned in 1922. Research indicates that Stinson may be Planter Irish, from Scotland, who moved to Ireland and maintained their Scottish cultural and social identity. We don't know why the Stinson's moved here in 1819. My first American ancestor, David Stinson, had a father with the same spelling we use now that goes back at least another generation. David was a farmer and weaver so it may be useful to track the name through the Scottish weaver historical records that I will try to do when I retire.

I assume you are still working on the Stinson family. My earliest, Thomas Stinson,b. abt 1836, Ireland; married in 1855, Durham Co, Ontario, Canada to Mary McClelland, also born Ireland (though one census indicates Thomas was born USA). They had five sons, Samuel, John, Robert, Thomas Henry (from whom I'm descended) and William, and 1 daughter Mary Ann, all born in Cavan or Manvers Twp, Durham County, Ontario. I wondered what part of Ontario your ancestors settled in, and if you've found out any more about Henry. I've haven't been able to get beyond Thomas and I'm looking at other Stinson families in Ontario at the time the might be connected.

I have been doing DNA work on our Kennedys/Cannadys/et al. I found a gentleman on my cousin list who had multiple kin names on both sides of my fathers genealogy. I spoke with the gentleman at great length when we finally got around to speaking about the "Stinsons". BTW he has more than 128,000 names in his gen files and has travelled extensively.

Acording to this man Stinson was changed from Stephenson and the like spellings. During one of his many trips to the UK, he located (within an old monastary record on an unnamed island) a burial remark about a 7+ foot red headed Scandanavian man named STIN. I believe this was before 1000 B.C.E. Anyway Stin was so large that in order to bury him he had to be divided into 2 large sections in order to get him properly buried.

The research gentleman traced this man Stin and found that the original name in Scandanavia was Stevenson/Stephenson. He also told me that all of his Stinson's including his son are very, very tall over 6'5". I found that interesting as my Ggrandmother Maggie Lee Stinson had tall children, including my Grandmother.

The r

Hello--I notice you haven't posted in a while, but I think I have a connection to your family. My grandfather Thomas Stinson had siblings named Marion,Pete, Susie and Gwendolyn. My aunt listed them in her old bible.I noticed that they we in Arkansas and Texas at one time. My aunt shared that her father's mother had a nervous breakdown and other relatived raised her children. I really think that Susie, Marion, and Peter were split throughout tthe families. Also one of branches lived in Texas.

Sabrina was married to William M Stinson, son of John Stinson, Jr and Rachel Drake. William was the brother of James Stinson my ggrandfather. While William and most of the family stayed in the Russel/Buchanan county area, James migrated with his family to Washington State in 1893. He died in Riffe, Lewis, Washington on 5 November 1921. He was buried at The Riffe Cemetery and later moved to the Doss Cemetery, Mossyrock, Washington. James was married to Mellisa Jane Thompson, daughter of John Thompson, Jr and Jane Stinson. She is buried next to him. James had 7 children, including my grandfather, George Floyd Stinson.

For some reason you don't have the entire letter. There is another paragraph which reads.
"As regards the girls--as before intimated, I can only give account to but two, Mary and Martha. Mary married William Dickey . They lived in Kentucky, but afterwards moved to Illinois. They had a family of eight children, six boys and two girls. Their names, John, James, William , Jesse , Andrew and David. The girls, Edith and Polly ( I have seen all of that family except Edith) All dead. Mattie or Martha, married David Dickey. I never knew much about them,They lived in Indiana. I have seen two of their children, Eleanor and John. Eleanor married man by the name of Elder. She has been dead a good many years. John was a Presbyterian preacher. I have lost sight of him. I suppose he is not living. I believe this is about what I know of the old stock of Stinson.
Note: David Stinson wrote another letter to Emma, from Norris City, ILL. AUG 22 '97 saying his Mother was Katy McAlester, daughter of Angus McAlester who came from Scotland and landed at Charleston, South Carolina then to Kentucky. Her Mother was Mary Spense, an Irish girl."

This letter was published in the book "Our Stinson's"

Sandi

I have found a letter on these Stinson's..letter to Emma McKnight of Lebanon, MO from David Newton Stinson, of Crittenden Co., KY, 1896:

"Dear Emma,

I will endeavor to give you an outline of the Stinson family. In order to explain, I will say that I spent the summer of 1843 with my grandfather David Stinson, 1764-1843 in North Carolina. I learned from him that his father, Andrew John Stinson 1740-1779, came from Ireland and settled in North Carolina where he and his wife both lived and died, leaving a family of orphan children. Four boys and four girls, as I remember. If this is true, I have lost sight of the two girls now. They were poor people and the boys were bound out to learn trades. Their names were David, Andrew, John, and Alexander. They all lived to be old men -- I have seen them all. All had families. David and John lived and died in North Carolina, while Andrew and Alexander came West. John died in 1843 while I was in Carolina. I saw him while on his death bed, the only time I ever did see him. He had a family of four children, three boys and one girl. Their names were John, Andrew and William. The girl's name I have forgotten, all dead long ago except for William, he was living a few years ago and may be living yet. I have seen them all. Andrew came West as before stated and settled in Kentucky in the neighborhood where I was raised. He afterward moved to Illinois. He had a family of four children, three boys and one girl. Their names were David, Andrew and William, the girl's name, Fanny. They all died long ago, except William, he died a year or so ago. He was in his 89th year. I have seen all of that family. When Alexander left Carolina, he settled in Tennessee in Giles County, about one mile from Connersville. He lived there a number of years, got rich, raised a large family -- nine girls and one boy. The old man had nine sons-in-law all living at the same time. Two of the girls married two brothers by the name of Sawyer, two married Ewings, and 2 married Cunninghams, one married Clark, one Taylor and one Briggs. James, the boy, never married, moved to California and died there. The old man and his wife and all his sons-in-law, the whole platter, moved to Iowa away back fefore the war where most of them have died. The last account I had from them, which was several years ago, there was some three or four of the girls living. There may be some them living yet -- I have seen all of that family except one or two of the girls.

As before intimated, the old man David, my grandfather, lived and died in Carolina. They lived in Micklingburg County, Charlotte is the county seat. He also had a large family, eight boys and four girls. Their names were James, William, Andrew, David, Jedediah, Johnathan, Cyrus and Newton. The girls Polly, Martha, Sally and Margarett. Polly and Martha never married. Sally married a man by the name of Neel and moved to west Tennessee. Margaret married a man by the name of Stewart, they lived in York District, South Carolina when I was there. James the oldest boy moved at an early day to WEst Tennessee. William, David and Jedediah went to Morgan County, Alabama. William afterward moved to Mississippi while Andrew, my father, came to Kentucky. Newton died young. Johnathan and Cyrus lived and died in Carolina. Cyrus died a year or two ago. They most all lived to be old men, although my father died comparatively young, he was only about forty years old at the time of his death. I have seen all of that family except James and Newton, Martha and Sally and William.

Hope this helps...

I too am looking for information about Lydia Ann or Lilian May Stinson. I would really like to know what her actual name is. I have found it both ways. Lydia Ann on the census reports and Lilian May is listed on the death certificate of her daughter Ora Arvella (Thayer) Hobbs. Lydia/Lilian is my 4th great grandmother. Her daughter Ora (Thayer) Hobbs is my 3 great grandmother. Her daughter Clemma Belle Hobbs Stillwell George is my great great grandmother. Her son Guy Fredrick Stillwell is my great grandfather and his daughter Bessie Belle Stillwell Ramsey is my grandmother. Bessie's son Robert (Rummel) Snyder is my father. He was born a Rummel but adpoted by a family with the name of Snyder.

Any info would be appreciated.
Varinia (Snyder) Atkinson

I have recently come across some information regarding the story of Jane Muller/Miller, who married Andrew John/John Andrew Stephenson. A Frederick Miller, of Mannheim, Germany, came to Rowan County, NC, where he had a tobacco plantation and owned slaves. This was very unusual for Germans to do, so it stands out. His plantation was in the Yadkin River Valley, by Abbott's Creek, according to what I've read. Also, Andrew John's father was John S. Stephenson, brother of William "Little Gabriel" Stephenson, but Andrew John is not listed in his father's will, as he died 15 yrs before his father died. Besides land deed papers, which call John S. a "Senior", implying a son named John, does anyone else have documentation linking Andrew John/John Andrew to John S. Stephenson?

Re: STINSONS of Dunbarton, New Hampshire, Past & Present

My great, great grandfather was William Cochran Stinson of Dunbarton, NH. He married Sarah Poor. Their daughter Sarah Jane Stinson married Marcus Holmes, son of Charles and Louisa (Pope) Holmes. According to the book, The Descendants of George Little, William Cochran Stinson was grandson of the original William Stinson, co-founder of Dunbarton, NH. I would be much interested in further information about the Stinsons of Dunbarton, any documentation about the place of origin in Scotland and ancestors there, and if one has any information about the Holmes line in Dunbarton that may appear.

I have an old copy of a coat of arms I inherited. I was always told that it was the Stinson coat of arms and that the original came from Dumbarton Castle, though I have not been able to verify the latter. A quick web search showed a Stinson coat of arms with the same shield and upraised hand holding a laurel wreath.
Re: the stinson family tree!!!!!

Hello, my name is Glenn Stinson. I live in Jefferson City, MO. Our family does have relatives in the Fulton, MO area. I believe their names are Freedom Stephenson Stinson who was married to Aletha Brunson. He died in Callaway county, MO in 1893 and she died in Granby, MO 1889. There is a creek that runs through Fulton, MO named Stinson Creek but I have been unable to find out who the creek is named after. Freedom and Aletha are the parents of Thomas Ming Stinson who is the father of my Great Great Grandmother, Melissa Stinson who married Wilton J Priddy, they are buried in a cemetery in Nocona, TX. I am not 100% certain of this lineage information but fairly sure it is accurate. I have some information that indicates that Aletha Brunson may be Cherokee, but I have not verified that through Cherokee rolls. Freedom's father's name may be Robert Stinson and his mother is Elizabeth Whitley, I believe, but I am not certain. I would be happy to discuss this information with you. Melissa Stinson/Priddy had two Stinson sons, Romulus and Remus. Remus died as a child and Melissa was only 26 when she passed. I am not aware of any of our Stinson ancestors living in Illinois. Please feel free to email me at lilbuddyboy@aol.com.

I totally agree with Nich_be60 that Artentious was not American Indian. My mother is a grandchild of Jacob Calhoun Stinson--one of Artentious' sons. I am not sure about the parents given for John Stinson--father of Artentious. I have never seen proof of this--but it is on many ancestories. I am interested in finding more about John Stinson and the ferry he operated in Cherokee County Texas @ 1848.

Thanks for replying to my query regarding my Stinson ancestors. Thomas and Elizabeth McQuillan Stinson were my great grandparents. I believe their children included: James, John Isabelle, Thomas and Robert. I'm fairly certain they also had other children including Patrick,William and possibly one or two more. I believe they were from Artrea Parish in County Derry, Ireland.

Any information you can provide will be sincerely appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks again.
Marge

I have found connection with your relatives who left Ireland at the dates you mentioned.
The same data is showing the time that the stevenson name was changing to stinson. It may have been dueto scots stevensons going to ireland to support King William (of orange)
