Paul,

It's unlikely they would have met in Calgary, it appears from my great uncle's service records that the closest he was to Calgary for training purposes was Edmonton in Apr/Mar 1943. Edmonton is approx. 200 miles north of Calgary (and incidentally my home town). It's always possible that they may have met during later training in England though.

Try email address brianolson81@yahoo.com

Brian

Hello,

The one address that I recognize is that of George Olsen (my deceased grandfather). The spelling and address is a bit off, however George was the brother-in-law of the bomb aimer Charles O'Connor. The correct address and name spelling should have been:

George Olson
1923 Osler Street
Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada

It is interesting to note that this address made it into your uncle's address book in the first place as the two probably did not know each other or even meet until the day/night of their mission together (my uncle only arrived in 50 Squadron on July 3). I'm sure it was custom, however, to exchange addresses with fellow crew members before each mission.

Yes, I am interested in whatever bibliography information you have of your uncle. You can give email a try and attach the large file in hopes that it will pass through.

Cheers,

Brian

Hello Brian,

I have little information on B/Aim F/Sgt. O’CONNOR, Charles Joseph, RCAF R/145478 (28 year old son of Patrick and Mary Ellen O’Connor of Windsor, Ontario, Canada).

Eric Stirling was my uncle and I have a good deal of information on his RAF life.

I have attached an extract from Tony Harris logbook, the first 6 entries Eric and Tony flew together, as you know Tony was too sick to fly on July 7th 1944.

The following is an extract from Eric's last letter dated July 3, 1944 - 'On arriving back at the station we found that our stay there was to be only another two days, for our pilot had arrived. Gosh, what a different chap he is to our last pilot. Doesn’t give a damn for anything or anybody, likes the ladies and good time, and takes us with him too, and consequently is very popular with everyone he meets, but boy, what a hell of a good pilot he is. We, as others, very much realise it now – fact is I wouldn’t be writing this letter now if it hadn’t have being for his superior handling of the plane. Prior to his picking us up, he’d completed twelve trips, but for well and truly shooting up a city had been court-marshalled and grounded. Only by pulling the right strings had he managed to get back into aircrew and we feel we are reaping the advantage of his experiences. Well as he hadn’t flown for some months it was quite natural that a refresher course was indicated and so we went back to Lancaster Flying School.
A week after arriving, both he and I were grounded for severe colds and consequently the course was extended to three weeks. During that period he sure led us a dance. Out practically every evening – to either Nottingham, Newark or the local villages. We both became so mixed up with a couple of women that sighs of relief escaped when our posting came through. Now we’re back on his old squadron and thorough enjoying the atmosphere of the place too – at long last I’m getting on with the job I left home for in ’41.
This is really a bang on drome – just on the outskirts of a big city – easy going – nice billets- decent food and no queuing for it either. The only thing wrong is that the weather lately has been so putrid that our trips are few and far between. As yet, I don’t think we can say we’ve tackled a really sticky target but some have given us moments of excitement – the first mainly.
Contrary to all thoughts one doesn’t feel afraid prior to take off, just hellish excited then you’re airborne and everyone settles down to his own job and whatever happens in the preceding hours just passes as a dream. In a good crew the job carries on right back to base – ours is a good crew. Wait until I’m back home again because it can only be until then that you’ll have a full account of my experiences, which to date are quite varied.
One thing I want to impress on you now folks is that I’m very fit and well, and have no disillusions as to what the future may bring – but I’m still counting on this Stirling luck. At the moment I’m sitting with this missile on my knee in the sergeant’s mess. The news has just come through that again the weather has beaten us and again there is an unholy scramble to get into town.'

Regards
Paul Anderson

Claire,

I'm not sure how to best share photos privately - perhaps you can suggest a method for us.

As for the log book, any of the entries for operational missions under pilot Carter and/or including mid upper gunner John Koshnysh are of interest (both trained with my great uncle Charles O'Connor). I've met and spoken with John a few times (Age 89) and am trying to reach pilot Don Carter (believed alive). Am I to understand that your relative Toni Harris is also still living? I have photos of the Carter crew Toni flew with, photos of their aircraft, photos of the Air Bomber Toni replaced (Charles O'Connor) and a photo of the Lloyd crew including Toni. Finally, I also have photos of some wreckage from the Lloyd crew, Lancaster DV227.

I too am interested in any Lloyd crew photos you may have including the aircraft DV227, RAF Skellingthorpe and/or air base life.

Sincerely,

Brian Olson

Claire,

Hello, I am the grand nephew of Charles O'Connor and am researching the 50 squadron crew that crashed on July 7/8, 1944 (Lancaster DV227).

I have numerous photos and documents of the Lloyd and Carter crew to share (have even visited the grave site and crash site of the Lloyd crew, finding actual aircraft wreckage)! I have also befriended John Kenwood (formerly Koshnysh). John is the the mid upper air gunner of the Carter crew that air bomber Harris joined shortly after the loss of DV227 (replacing Charles O'Connor). I am very interested in contacting "Tony" and/or family members and sharing any photos and/or copies of his flight log book.

Brian

Would love to find out if anyone has anything earlier, than what is in the Gloaming of Life, which we have also. Did you know the Obelsik in the New Kilpatrick Church yard is still standing.
Hi Hugh!
Just came across a really old message of yours on Ancestry. My grandfather's brother's name was James Burns. He lived in Dundee and he married Elspeth Cassie. They had a daughter called Elspeth Burns who married a Robert Watson Stirling. As far as I can make out they went to Canada and had two children called Norma Stirling and Robert Gordon Stirling. This sounds like the same family that you were interested in.
Would you like to get in touch?
Susan Burns

Clan Stirling Online! - A new design.
Most of you have probably visited Clan Stirling Online! (CSO) over the years. It was created 13 years ago on May 12, 1997 as a 1 or 2 page web site designed to share research with close family members. Over the years more and more research have been added and the site has undergone several re-designs to accommodate the increasing amount of data. Today there are approximately 20,000 pages of articles tucked away on the site. For the last several years we have been using a back-end system named Coranto to manage our content on CSO. It was getting increasingly difficult to manage the site with Coranto sot his year we have decided to switch over to the MediaWiki engine, this is the same engine used by Wikipedia. We now have the basic structure of the web site created and will move articles from the old site over as time permits. Here are the links ...

Old Site: http://www.clanstirling.org/Main/main.shtml
New Site: http://www.clanstirling.org

Please note that some of the links on the old site will send you to the new site if all of the articles for that section have been moved.

cheers,
Mike Jex & Rick Stirling

STIRLING, Orlo Ray m. WINFIELD, Vera (Betty) - Canada

When researching OneWorldTree, I saw that someone posted information on Orlo Ray Stirling, stating that his wife was Vera Betty Winfield, and that her parents were George Winfield and Lillian. Well, Very Betty Winfield was my Aunt - we called her Auntie Betty. Her father's name was not George! Her brother (my father) was George Wesley Vosper Winfield. Their parents were Lillian Honor Vosper and Wesley Wilton Winfield. I am interested in learning more about Orlo, and to find out where you got your information on my Auntie Betty, as I didn't even know that her first name was Vera! Also, my father and most of his family have passed on, and I have lost touch with his only living sister Marion. I don't have bmds on Betty, and would love to have copies of any documents you may have. Please contact me at adnerbdleifniw@hotmail.com

Hi,

In response to your request, i do have a little information about your relative.

He and my Grandpa flew together from 50 Squadron, RAF Skellingthorpe.

They were in the same crew.

However, on that fateful day, my Grandpa was unwell, so did not go on the raid that night. He swapped with Flight Sergeant Charles Joseph O'Connor. Grandpa later went on to fly with O'Connor's original crew.

My Grandpa still has his flight log book, and lots of photographs of his friends.

Hope this is of some interest to you.

Claire

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 5 February 1892 ...

Robert Clinton, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Stirling, died Sunday January 31st, aged one year and one month.

A happy home was shrouded in gloom by the summons which bore the spirit of little Robert Clinton to the world above. A mother's idol a father's pride snatched from them at the very threshold of his existence - what can assuage their grief. The sympathizing words of friends are comfortless; the assurance of a meeting in another world is no balm for present pain, yet it is the best that can be said. Fond parents, you will meet your child again. This momentary separation is but happiness deferred.
Alexander STIRLING and Mary THOMSON c1796

I am interested in making contact with any descendants who recognise the following STIRLING families,

Alexander STIRLING and Mary THOMSON who may have married in Stirling, Stirling, Scotland on 10th Jan 1796. They had the following children, all born in New Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland,

William 1803
Jean & Mary 1805 (twins)
Anne 1807
Alexander 1813
Janet 1815

William b1803 had 3 wives,

William STIRLING m1830 Cadder, Lanark, Agnes (Janet) McALISTER. The name Janet was given on William’s death certificate but the most likely IGI marriage entry gives Agnes as the Given Name. William and Agnes had at least 1 child Janet, born 1831 in New Kilpatrick, Dunbarton.

William STIRLING m1837 Cadder, Lanark, Margaret GRAHAM. William and Margaret had at least 1 child Margaret, born 1848 in Cadder.

William STIRLING m1850 Cadder, Lanark, Mary Abercromby. Mary probably died in Bridgeton, Glasgow in 1875 and William in 1882. William and Mary had a child Robert born 1859 in Cambuslang (may have been adopted according to family info). Robert is my G Grandfather.

This may be William’s location in 1881,

Dwelling:	35 Mordaunt St
Census Place:	Barony, Lanark, Scotland
Source:	FHL Film 0203629 GRO Ref Volume 644-1 EnumDist 25 Page 9
Marr	Age	Sex	Birthplace
Hugh STIRLING	M	39 M	Old Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland
Rel:	Head
Occ:	Contractor
Jane STIRLING	M	39 F	Campsie, Stirling, Scotland
Rel:	Wife
Occ:	Housewife
Jane STIRLING	U	16 F	Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel:	Daur
Occ:	Assists In House
William STIRLING 14 M	Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel:	Son
Occ:	Assists Father
Isabella STIRLING 6 F	Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel:	Daur
Hugh STIRLING 1 M	Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel:	Son
Margaret STIRLING 3 m	F	Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel:	Daur
*William STIRLING	W	74 M	O Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland
Rel:	Father	Handicap: Deaf
Occ:	Messenger

(If this message has been Gatewayed to a Mailing List please reply via the appropriate message area by following the link or e-mail a direct reply. He married Agnes Hall who was born 07/12/1863 in Antrim, Ireland and died 10/15/1944 in Denver, CO. They were married on 06/08/1882 in Greenoch, Scotland. They had 9 children, Joseph, Andrew, Elizabeth Jane, Agnes, Mary, Rachel, Robert, Thomas and Sarah. I believe their parents were Thomas Stirling and Jane Gregg. I have been unable to confirm the parents information or find any additional information. Any help would be appreciated.

Bob Younger

None of the Presbyterian C hurches in Coleraine have their own churchyards. A McWilliams family had The Salmon Leap Bar and Restaurant until recently at Castleroe which is about 2 miles south of Coleraine and close to the River Bann. This was formerly an old coaching inn and is commemorated in the old folksong "Kitty of Coleraine" Kitty was the daughter of the landlord and Barney McCleary had just returned from University in Dubli, he was the son of the local squire. Stirling is a Coleraine name although many of them came originally from the Ballyrashane area. I live locally and I am a member of The Coleraine historical society.

I too am researching Stirling's in Waterside. I have a Andrew Stirling who was married to Janet Knox both born about 1780 and his parents could be John Stirling and Janet Wilson or James Stirling and MS. Martin. Do you have any Stirlings that work with this family. They were Weavers Also. I have more history here.

Additional information on John Stirling, the father (see my 12 July 2005 post):
His second wife was Annie M. Smith, whom he must have married about Sept. 1930 (per newspaper notice of their marriage license) in Los Angeles Co. She was then age 41, so was b. ca. 1889.

Was Smith her maiden name? Was she married previously to a Smith? Did she marry again?

I have found the information I was seeking. She was daughter of Rebecca Van Meter and Wilson R. Stirling. I have traced both sides to early 19th century PA and earlier for the Van Meters. let me know if anyone is interested in these lines.
