Hi I have seen a website of Robert Stock "Stocks of Essex" on which I see details of my grandfather (who I knew nothing about previously). I have tried to click on the link to preview Robert's book and to contact him by email but without success. The website appears to link to Rootweb so I would be grateful to hear from anyone who can put me in touch with Robert Stock as his tree stops in 1911 and my family are not shown so I can give him some further information. Very many thanks - would be much appreciated.

Ellen Stock was born inLittledean Gloucestershire in 1874. Her Parents were Willliam Stock b 1851, and Mary Ann (Preedy) 1849-1924.By 1891 They were living in Buriton, Hampshire. Although my grandmother, Ethel, was brought up to believe Mary Ann was her Mum, It seems that Ellen was in fact her mother. I am trying to confirm this and also find out who the father was? I think Ellen may have married Henry Collins in 1897 and would welcome confirmation of this.News of any other siblings of Ellen would also be welcomed. I seem to have reached a dead end!

I have an old orchestra photo (attaching a copy to this post) dating to 1897, and do not know whether it has significance to Freidrich or to his brother Carl. The photo had been in the possession of my great-grandmother, Marguerite Stock Cumiskey, daughter of Carl F. Stock and his second wife, Dorothee Schulz. For years, we had been told we were related to "a famous conductor" but subsequent research has determined we descend from Freidrich's brother, Carl, a musician and teacher. The brothers were very close at one time, working together as musicians on ocean liners (before 1900) so it's possible this photo is significant to either brother.

Was your Carl born in 1870 in Germany and died in 1920 in Toledo, OH - and whose brother was Frederick Stock, conductor (from 1905-1942) of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra? If so, then we have the same Carl! I am not familiar with your George William Stock? Is he a brother to Carl and Frederick?

Well it wouldn't be the first time.

In those days, of course, the vicar was 'somebody' and fawned over the farmers and tradespeople in the middle, and the local dignatories at the front. Our lot were snivelling away in the back pews, the vicar gritting his teeth as to when he would need to interrupt his afternoon nap for yet another 'pauper' funeral.

..and our lot could hardly write it down for him!

Having reviewed it again, I think the Vicar was wrong in calling her Emma, the corresponding GRO Death registration is for Amey, who appears to be the daughter of James Stock and Mary, baptised and registered Dec 1849 as Anna Stock, but she appears in the 1851 PC as Amy and as Amey in 1861
So you are right that if this is the burial, then she couldn't have produced young Arthur Radley....

As you say, Finchingfield does have a lot of conundrums!

Hi Derek

The Stocks are certainly somewhat enigmatic (they are not one of the surnames I study in depth, but I seem to have garnered over 1,000 of them as they have "touched" other families) and the Stocks of Finchingfield certainly do hold some conundrums, any ideas on who the Parents were of the 16 year old girl Emma Stock were? She was buried at Cornish Hall End 13 January 1866 so she can't be the mother of Albert Radley Stock....

Yes, Sandy.

For what it's worth, I have a 1800 Samuel, too for this pair, who were John Stock and Mary Pitt married 1798 Sible Hedingham.

That John is likely to be 1777 [Sible] baptised John to John & Elizabeth Clark (m 1773). In turn, father John was baptised 1750 in Sible Hedingham to John Stock and Mary Worreker from Little Bardfield. This 1724 John was baptised to Edward and Sarah Glasscock (married 1723 Little Bardfield) and Edward was baptised 1696 Little Bardfield to Richard Stock and Elizabeth Thurgood. [m Saffron Walden 1694]

Here my trail goes a bit cold, other than I assume this Richard was the one baptised 1673 in Debden, son of another Richard and wife un-recorded.

Pete...

Glad it's solved.

To answer your question, it works like this.... Most people, like myself, do their own specific (Stock) tree but that gives gaps/dead ends all along the line. Ultimately, you come to the conclusion that you must capture just about ALL the Stock information. I can't say I'm 'there' yet, but it does help to have the huge list of all baptisms to [say] a James & Mary, wherever, and ALL marriages of James to a Mary Anybody, and then I try to attach all baptisms to marriages.

Some (like the Little Easton thing) just 'fit' naturally as the only obvious answer in terms of timing and geographical proximity - helped by the lack of other competing 'candidates'.

But it remains an imperfect science. I swear that these Stocks moved around deliberately, and decided not to baptise a few at random, and to call their wife 'Mary' instead of 'Sarah' on the census purely to defeat people like us a few hundred years later! Another technique they used was to name their child George simply because the Stocks down the road did last month, and it will create pure confusion..

If you want an exercise in absolute and utter futility, simply grab all the Great Waltham data. Now try and stitch together all the myriad of James's and Mary's in the right combination, and you will see my point. Yes, there are public tress (all copied from each other), but almost certainly wrong in some respects, and give just one of the several permutations. Just a few of the conflicts can be solved by advanced boolean mathematical logic, but ultimately, they invented James's out of thin air in some generations, and had far too few to go around in others.

Finchingfield, too, contains a complete bag of conundrums - especially on the Thomas name - and I can never swear my tree is 100% correct!

C'est la vie!

Georgette Lily Guyard daughter of Victor Guyard and Emma Perocheau came to Canada with her mother and stepfather Eloi Auzou in 1935. She married probably in Canada West somewhere to a Mr Stock with whom she had at least 3 daughters Elizabeth and Margaret Stock but sorry can't remember the name of the other girl.
Trying to find a marriage record for Stock and Guyard and also birth or marriage certificates for the children of Georgette Lily Stock.
Thank you for any help on this matter
Sandy

I would suggest your James was the son of John and Mary Stock who was baptised at Wix 25 Feb 1812, Siblings -
Thomas bap 30 Mar 1806 -
Sarah bap 23 Oct 1808 (married Benjamin Moss ref 1841 census)
-
James could have been a surviviving twin as an infant William Stock was buried at Wix on 13 Feb 1812.
-
I think it was a short sojourn in Wix as I did not see any other contemporary entries for the family name, but the family was in Sible Hedingham in 1819 for the birth of another son, William. (ref 1841 and 1851 census)

Pete

Stumbled upon this by accident. You've probably solved it by now. But my recent research indicates the following train of events:

1. Robert (unknown) married an Elizabeth. They baptised a George 24/6 1751 in Brosted.

2. This George married Prudence Poulter 1776 (Takely) and baptised John at Little Easton the same year.

3. John married Sarah Gage, Gosfield, 11/11 1799 and spawned the following army:

William 1800
John 1801
Abraham 1805
Edward 1807
Joseph 1809
Mary 1811
William 1811 [Twins, I think]
James 1813
Samuel 1816

4. The above William married Harriet utcher 16/9 1836 (Gosfield) but had no children by 1841 census

5. Samuel married Martha Patient 23/3 1838. By the time of 1841 census they had spawned Henry (3/1/1838) and Charles (20/12 1840)

Regards

Derek

I have a Stock family history which shows my great great great grandfather Christopher Stock married Elizabeth Wentzel of Dettingen in 1847, and they immigrated the same year to America, settling in Butler, PA. he died there on June 27, 1859. The family history is fairly complete past that point, but I have not been able to trace this Christopher Stock back any further; I am not certain whether he originally lived in Dettingen or nearby. She was born 26 Dec 1831 and baptised 6 Jan 1833.

I am trying to research John STOCK but variously find his record is “off IGI” or “ in hospital” or “living” or “details suppressed for this person” or block all wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com results”.

Hi I am looking for information on my grandmother. Her name was/is Saloma Stock she was born approx (1901-1910) to William Stock and Elizabeth Pettit. They lived in Blackhawks Iowa.

Saloma was married to John Covington she was listed as a widow, but it appears that John did not die. Then She married Carl Berend. Both marriages took place in Iowa.

I do not know if Saloma had any other children than my mom and uncle whom she gave up for adoption in 1924. They were about a month and a half to two months old when they were given up.

In the addoption records it states that Saloma died in 1925. Outside of Carl Berend name there is no other information on him either. No other agencies where involved. All the information that was given was given by the adopted mother. Saloma nor Carl were at the hearing.

Last know place where Saloma lived was in Blackhawk Iowa 1925.

My mother is now 87 and in very good health, however she recently lost her twin brother. She would like to know if there are any other brothers or sisters out there.

Bob

up to 1918 it was http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/austhung.htm were 12 different languages were spoken.
If your ancestors were Byzantine Catholic than your research will be in the Eastern Slovakia and part of Poland that was historical region Galicia. Do you have their arrival manifest, draft registration form, naturalization intent and petition?
www.surnamenavigator.org
www.iabsi.com/gen/public
www.halgal.com

www.castlegarden.org
I have a Constante Stock born Bavaria/Bayern in 1833. His name may also be spelled Constant E Stock. His wife is Elizabeth Stock, also born Bavaria/Bayern in 1833. On the 1870 US Census they have 6 children: Annie, Barbara, George, John, Lizzie, and Albert.

Would Constant Stock or Elizabeth Stock (unsure maiden name), happen to show up on your chart? I tried to view the web site from the posting however it said it was no longer available. Thanks for any help.

I know they are not directly related. My 3 Stocks came around 1840. They were born in Dettingen, Germany. I do have a lot of the Stocks from that small town. Unless you can go beyound 1777 in PA, I don't think I can help at this time. I need a parents name from 1777 or before to check further. Sorry
