Whoops! Didn't feel that strongly about it (to post twice).
Still, I'm pretty sure they are the same family, I am right about Amos Stockford son of Sarah A. McKay being the same one. Here they are in 1910 Census, living with Neil + Flora, who are not too difficult to trace (if I can do it, anyone can); just wrong birthplaces.

1910 Census Empire Cass ND
Neil McKay 70, born "Ireland", parents born "Ireland" (this continues down, Ireland all the way down)
Flora 55, born "Ireland", parents born "Ireland"
Saraha 33, born Canada, down as a daughter, parents born "Ireland"
Wilford, 18
Charles L 16
Emos Stockford (grandson) 8yo, parents born Canada
Norah Stievers b. ~1899 in ND, parents born in Canada, (unknown rel. to household) 21

My line (via Charles L.) ended up in Pasadena, nr. Altadena CA; I am trying to get hold of my grandmother (still in Pasadena) to see if she knew anything about a cousin called Amos Stockford. I am pleased to hear he had descendants.

I am also interested in an obit. for Amos Stockford, if anyone would be so kind as to forward that to me.

If anybody thinks I've got it wrong I am happy to correspond. Perhaps I have mistakenly traced a different Sarah A.
Thanks, Barb for your clarification that it was the naturaliz. record of father Amos Stockford, not his son James who entered the U.S. at Sault Ste. Marie, MI in 1886. It makes a lot more sense that the father rather than a young boy of 15 ½ would have gone ahead to check out ND. Also, the place of birth on the naturaliz record (York Co.) now fits because father Amos was born in York Co. (Whitechurch Twp.) (source: Wesleyan Methodist Birth/Baptismal Records on Rootsweb.com). Birth: 14 Oct. 1848; Baptism: 28 Jan 1849; parents: James and Sophia Stockford; minister: Rev. W. Young.

Now I am trying to reconcile the immigration dates for father and son.
The 1886 immigration date on the naturaliz record and the immigration date given on the 1900 and 1930 U.S. Census (for son James) appears to match up with son James rather than father Amos. The 1900 U.S. Census gives the immigration date for father Amos as 1896. So, now I am puzzled again. Did son James accompany his father in that first trip to ND in 1886? Perhaps the 1896 immigration date is when the whole family migrated to ND. If the 1896 date is correct, it seems unusual that Amos (and son, if he was along) would have returned to Oxford Co. prior to 1891, and then waited until 1896 to migrate. Any thoughts about this?

The Sarah A. McKay I was referring to was the Sarah who married James Stockford, and then divorced him, not the Sarah J. McKay who was the younger sister (by one or two years) of Jessie McKay. I pointed out in my previous post that Sarah A. McKay and young son Amos Stockford were living with her parents (1910 Census). If there was, as you indicated, a scandal then that may have been the reason why she declared herself a widow. She used the Stockford name in the 1820 Census (along with son Amos), but still declared herself a widow. Sarah J. McKay was born 09 Feb 1878 to Neil McKay and Eliza Hutchinson, East Zorra, Oxford Co. (source: Canada Births and Baptisms, 1661-1959 on familysearch.org.). Have you found a birth record for Jessie McKay? I have not.

In my next post, I have a question for you about the place of birth that you have for Amos Stockford's wife, Elizabeth Donald.
Jon

Jon,
The obit for Barbara was from the Elora Canada paper. She died June 3, 1903.As I said before all I have here with me is the scanned image, my original is in Texas so I don't have that information on hand right now.
I have not been able to find any record for James/Sarah marriage, but, I do have a copy of their divorce papers and I will get a scanned copy for you from my sister. It was quite a scandal back in the day. It seems he was "caught" more than once with his wifes cousin Jessie mcKay(whom he later married)It was surprising to learn after reading the divorce papers that James' father Amos was a witness for Sarah.
Amos Stockfords name was James Amos, he was called Amos and on his Naturalization papers Amos is struck through and James was inserted. These are the papers for the elder James
There are so many Stockford's from Canada it has really been difficult sorting them all out.
I have searched everywhere for a marriage license for James/Jessie with no luck. i thought they may have gone back to Wellington Co.,Canada to get married but turned up nothing there either. I am going to try Sascatchuwan next as that is where his sister Janette was living.
The Sarah Mckay you refer to could be the Aunt Sarah my mother remembers. She never married and was Jessie mcKay Stockford's older sister. I do not have a birthdate for her.
Sarah Stockford and son Amos moved to California and that is where she died. Amos did go back to ND to see his father at least once before he died.
Give me a few days to get together with my sister and I will see what documents she has that I can send to you.
Barb

Barb,
Do you have the newspaper name and date that had Barbara Stockford’s obituary? I did not see it on the attachment. Thanks.

I am puzzled about the information in James’ naturaliz record that you found, and I am also puzzled about his apparent 1st marriage to Sarah A. McKay. If my thinking and reasoning is off please let me know.

Migration
Unless James was with an older relative or friend, he seems kind of young (age 15 ½) in 1886 to migrate on his own from Ontario to Cass Co., ND. Did that naturaliz record give James age? What is puzzling to me is that I found him residing back in Canada with his parents, siblings, and nieces in the 1891 Canadian Census (Nichol, Wellington Co.). So, either there are two James Stockfords or he went ahead of the family to scout out Cass Co. and then returned to Wellington Co. The 1886 immigration date does match fairly well with the immigration dates given for him in the 1900 and 1930 U.S. census records: 1886 and 1888. It is unfortunate that no date was given for James’ immigration in the 1910 Census, and that in the 1920 Census, the census taker recorded James’ estimated date of birth in the immigration column.

Birth
According to the naturaliz record, his birth in 1870 was in Holland, Ontario, The only Holland I know of is in York Co., which does not seem to fit with Barbara’s birth a year earlier in Elora, Wellington Co. Have you seen a birth record for him or a death/funeral record or obit that stated his birth place?

Marriages
Your postings indicate that James Stockford’s first marriage was to Sarah A. Mckay, daughter of Neil H. and Flora McKay, and that they had one son, Amos Stockford. Based on census records, that appears to be the case, although I am wondering if you have found a marriage certificate for them. I am a little surprised that James would have a son (who was named after his father) in 1901 and then a year later marry Jessie A. McKay.* Did you ever find out anything about whether there was a divorce? I noticed you had a question mark about that. Would such a split have caused Sarah to declare that she was a widow? Maybe you know this, but in the 1910 Census she is back living with her parents (along with son Amos Stockford) as Sarah McKay, In the 1920 Census she is still identified as a widow, but her name is recorded as Sarah Stockford, and son Amos is with her. I started thinking again, are there two James Stockfords? But I cannot find a death record (between 1901 and 1910 ) on the ND vital records index for a James Stockford and I cannot find a 2nd James Stockford in census records. So, I am thinking that Sarah did not want anyone to know there was a marriage breakup, so she chose to declare herself a widow. Have you seen an obit, death certificate, or funeral record on James or Sarah that sheds any light on them?

Jon
*James and Jessie A. Stockford were witnesses at Florence V. and David McKay’s (sister to Jessie) wedding.
Barb,
Thanks for the confirmation of Amos Stockford’s death and the obit of Barbara Stockford (which I did not have). Where are you in MN? I live in Hugo on the northern edge of the Twin Cities. I am doing this research for another Barb, Barb Hite of Stillwater, MN. I have read several of your posts and tree info on Rootsweb/Ancestry.com, and if I remember correctly, you are g-granddaughter of James Stockford. Barb Hite is g-granddaughter of Barbara Stockford, so I think you and she are third cousins.

I will include a few things here in this reply about Barbara Stockford, some of which you may already have., and will do more later.

I think I recall reading that you knew Barbara had two children (before she married), Lillie M. (1884) and Florence Viola (1890) and that they were raised by their grandparents, Amos and Elizabeth Stockford (sources: 1891 Canadian Census: Nichol, Wellington Co. and 1900 U.S. Census, Howes Twp., Cass Co.). I have not found a birth record for Lillie M., but I found Florence’s birth record (Ancestry.com) in Ontario, Canada Births, 1869-1911 . Her birth (1 Sept 1890) was listed as illegitimate. In the materials that Barb H. gave me, the name Kilpatrick was considered as the father’s name, but there was no source for that. The only thing I have found on the internet that associates Kilpatrick with Stockford is in familysearch.org IGI and Ancestral file records. An individual has submitted Lillie May Kilpatrick (Stockford). Her birth supposedly took place in York Co., Ontario. I am a little skeptical about York Co. because it would mean that Barbara left home (Maryborough, Wellington Co.: 1881 Can Census) to give birth to Lillie May in 1884. There are some Stockfords in York Co., who may be related, so I suppose it is possible if there was a degree of embarrassment over the pregnancy. I have not tried contacting the individual who submitted the York Co. birth to familysearch.org, because I have been focusing on Barbara Stockford.

In my research I found the suggestion that the name of Florence V.’s father may be McPatrick. That name is listed above Barbara Stockford’s name (as mother) on Florence’s death certificate. Also, on Florence’s funeral record, her mother’s name is given as Barbara McPatrick. In both records, Florence’s grandfather Amos Stockford is recorded as the father. However, I found no McPatricks in Wellington Co. in 1881 or 1891. Barb H. was hoping I could trace the illusive Kilpatrick, McPatrick,, Patrick, etc. back to a location in Ireland because she is going there this summer, but as I told her, without a first name, I am facing a brick wall.

You mentioned that the Stockford family Bible indicated that Barbara married Malcom Mclean in Island Lake, Rolette Co., ND. I think I would be inclined to go with official records of their marriage which shows that they married in Elora, Oxford Co. (sources: Ancestry.com Ontario Canada Marriage Records 1801-1926 or Rootweb.com Ontario Marriage Registers. What is interesting is that one of the witnesses was Peter Mclean. He shows up in the Amos Stockford household on the 1900 U.S. Census , Island Lake. I am guessing he is Malcolm’s brother, but I am not planning to research Mclean.

I will have more info later and some questions about James.
Jon jonelson65@aol.com

The source I have for Amos' death is the Rollette Co. paper. There was a death notice for him in it. He died there of cancer and was taken to Rolla by his son James.I thought I had scanned it but I can't seem to locate it in my electronic files and my hard copies are all in Texas.(I am in MN at the moment) I will see if my sister has a copy and forward it on to you. Any information about Barbara Stockford would be welcome, we know so little about her. I do have an obit from the the Elora newspaper for her. That is when I found out she had a son. We know nothing about her 2 daughters father. Just a name and we don't even know if that is correct(Kirkpatrick?)
The information about Barbara's marriage came from the Stockford Bible and I think it said Island Lake Presy. church.
Barb

Hi. Lori,
Not sure if you will get this since your excanges with Barb are over 4 years old, but thought I would try. I just posted a reply to one of Barb's 2006 posts. I have recently completed a fair amount of research on the Amos Stockford family (his parents, Amos' children and their marriages, g-children and their marriages, migration to ND & Sask., etc.), but I have not found a source for Amos' death that supposedly occurred in 1912 in Devil's Lake, ND. He is not in the ND Dept. of Hlth on-lioe records nor their original records. I have suspected that Amos had siblings in Wellington Co., but have not found a specific source or connection. You indicated you had found siblings. Could you share what you found and your source? I would be glad to share anything that I have that you do not have.
Thanks.
Jon

Hi. Barb,
Not sure if you will see this since your posting re: Amos Stockford/Elizabeth Donald was over 4 years ago. I have been researching them recently for a friend, and was 95 % done when I saw your exchanges with Lori. I believe I have everything that was in your posts, but I am wondering if you ever found a source for the 1912 date of death (supposedly in Devil’s Lake) that I have seen several times for Amos. The location seems right because the 1910 Census shows Amos Stockford residing in Coulee Twp., Ramsey Co. He is in the household of the Ed Doyle family (as a servant). I have no idea what his connection is to that family, but I am 99% certain it is our Amos because his age is about right. I could not find his death record, however, in the on-line ND Death Index nor could a hand search by the Department of Health in Bismark (using several spelling variations). I think he could not be found because there was only a 95% compliance rate to record deaths in ND even into 1920. I have not searched for an obit and have not seen an on-line index of the Rolette cemetery to see if he was buried back there with his wife, Elizabeth Donald who was buried 12 July 1907 (source: for burial date: Elizabeth’s obit).

You mentioned in your post that Barbara Stockford married Malcolm Mclean in Rolette Co. Maybe you have researched that since your post because the Ontario Canada Marriage records (1801-1926) show that they married in Ontario 14 March 1900. Their son William Carl was born 21 June 1902. If you are interested, I also have specific information (census and marriages, etc.) about Barbara’s siblings and her two children born before marriage (Lillie M. and Florence V.). I am doing this research for a descendant (g-daughter) of Florence V. If you get this and want to share info, use my e-mail address: jonelson65@aol.com
Thanks. Jon
Hello again, i have a picture of my great grandfather from what has to be the twenty's. everyone always tells me i'm his identical twin. After inquiring about my last message i took the picture out of the frame and not too surprisingly the name Jesse Algie Stockford was printed on the back. So yes, i'm most certainly a cousin of yours. Hillsdale Michigan is where i live and most of Jesse's descendents also.

My name is Adam Stockford. I live in south central MI. I can tell you that I had an uncle named Jesse, at least 2 or 3 cousins named Jesse. Its seems to be a very common first name among my family. I would be very surprised if we are not descended of Jessie E. Stockford. I have looked and researched and im confounded as how such a common sounding name is actually so very uncommon. I have also heard that my great grandfather died young in a freak hay-wagon accident. He had 3 sons; Gerald(my grandfather), Jesse, and Marion(who they call pooch). This has got to be the same man. Was you're maternal gmas name gladys armstrong?

Do you think our families are somehow connected? If yes, do you have documentation? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
kstockfo (keithstockford@yahoo.com)

Hi Keith:

Yes it would be good to figure this out. I'm bedridden for a couple of days but can then get out the info. I have. Jessie Elgie Stockford was my grandfather and the family seemed to be in Philadelphia. He married someone there for a very short time and had one daughter (named Cecelia, who would probably be about 80 now). He "retired" at a young age from the Navy and bought a farm in Michigan where he married a young woman (my maternal grandmother) and had several children. He died shortly after in a farming accident. His mother was Ella Barber. What do you know of your Jessie E. Stockford?

It seems all Stockfords are. I have an extensive file on Stockfords in both America and Great Britain. My mother's maiden name was Stockford, from northern Maine, and the Stockford folks were Loyalists during the Rev. War and fled to New Brunswick in 1783. I have their history back to Long Island, NY.
jerx@sbcglobal.net

From what I have been able to find on all sides, most of my family has been in the states for many generations. I am curious as to what countries everyone came here from, etc..

My great-great grandmoter was Camille Stockford and her husband was Charles Corey (also from the Hodgdon, ME area). Does anyone know anything about the Corey's or Stockford's from Maine in that time-frame?? If not, any direction on where to do more research would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

My information is from Census records that I subscribe to, in addition to the free census on line, and the New Brunswick Archive site which is free on line as is the Maine Archive site. You should explore the NB Archive site as it has good information on the New Brunswick residences with original data, including old newspaper birth, deaths and marriages as copied by Johnson.
If you have a particular question on a person perhaps I can try and assist you. You should try to get a second source, which I have posted, because certain unknown data can quickly lead you astray.
The Stockfords are a very distant cousin and lived near my relatives in Carleton County.
Carroll

I agree with the confusion of the same names appearing in each generation! My problem is the number of Thomas's. I may be able to help with your information from England. My email address is ronstockford@hotmail.com.

Have you found a direct line to your English family?

Ron

I have a lot of information on the Stockfords that was sent to me by someone in England. This info is also taken from the Duns Tew records and goes back to the 1700's. The names James and Amos are so predominant in each generation it has me so confused sometimes I don't know who is who anymore.

Amos may have been with his family in Canada at that time visiting. Or maybe he did move back there for awhile. I know he was in ND in 1907 when Elizabeth died. The are still some blanks in my timeline for him.
I think his son James and daughter Mary were the only ones who stayed in America. Barbara(the eldest) died in 1903 in Elora Canada from breast cancer I think. She had 3 children, Florence and Lily Mae were the 2 oldest. Amos and Elizabeth raised them. I do not know who their father was. She also had a son Carl from her marriage to Malcolm McLean whom she married in 1900 at Island Lake, ND. Carl was about 2 when she died. I do not know what happened to him or Malcolm(one of my black holes.) Jannet stayed in Canada, and Amelia died in 1908

Stockford in New London Co CT

I would like to learn more about the families of Raymond John Stockford and George W Stockford. Both were sons of Edmond Stockford - or Edward Stockford, and his wife Alma. (or perhaps Alma is a step mother and a second wife?) The family lived in Groton New London Co Connecticut in 1930. These two sons married into my father's family line.
I am primarily interested in decendants of Raymond and George.
Thank you!

That is most interesting. I have Amos and Elizabeth Donald married in Wellington County 1868. I have 5 children for them. I found Amos in Saskatchewn with his son-in-law in 1906 and Amos' daughter Janet/Jeanette Head is also in Saskatchewan as well.

I had a lot of mis-information given to me but, I think I have it sorted out now. Amos and Elizabeth Donald were married at Mount Forrest, Wellington, Ontario, Canada on 1/8/1868.
They had 5 children and later moved to Island Lake, ND 1900-01.
Amos' mothers name was Harper, not Hooper as I first thought.
Amos died in 1912 and Elizabeth in 1907.
Their 2nd child(James Amos) and only son was my great grandfather.

I am following the descendants of Amos and Elizabeth. Some time after 1901 they moved to Humbolt Saskatchewan. How do you come by the information from England? I was able to determine that Amos had siblings living in Wellington county, Ontario. Also squnited at the records to see that Hooper looked alot like Harper. Only one oddity. You say Amos married in England, but I found their marriage record in 1868 in Ontario.
