I realize I am replying to a post from nearly two years ago, but I just found it. I too am a descendant of Charles Henry and Harriet Stoddard Ball. I can assure you from the accounts I've heard from grandparents and cousins who knew them that they were never divorced...in fact, they were still together and had their last child together when she was 50. I am not in possession of any photos personally, I just have the one that a cousin has posted on ancestry.com of Charles Henry Ball. I am looking for the ancestors of his father, William Ball. There is an old family legend that William's family was related to Mary Ball Washington, but I have not been able to confirm nor debunk that story at this time.

I don't know if they are related, or where Wilkes-Barr PA is in relation to Glen Falls and the Adirondacks in NY, but in my notes it says that Charles Stoddard, the father of Seneca Ray Stoddard was a part-time farmer, craftsman and a LUMBER MAN. When Seneca Ray was born at Wilton hamlet at Dimick's Corner near Mt McGregor in the Palmer mountain range.

I'm sorry if I confused anyone, but I'm investigating Senaca Ray Stoddard the Adirondack photographer who settled in Glen Falls NY. I couldn't imagine there being two Senaca Ray Stoddards.Much of the basic information can be found at Wikipedia or The Chapman Museum Historical site. One of the problems with my picture is proving Seneca Ray is behind the camera and not in front of it. The copier is acting up and my daughter has that and the scanner. When she finds the time to send me the copy I gave her I will try to post a closeup of the people in it. I'm hesitant to post the entire picture as it would be one of a kind. Photos of Senaca's family are few and far between. I'm not a Stoddard myself. I bought the picture at a yard sale for 75 cents in 1971 and loved it enough that I eventually painted a copy. A few months ago I saw what appeared to be two of the people in a vintage photograph by Stoddard -A canoe hunting party with Peter O'Mally a guide, two dogs, a dead buck and a man with a big mustache who I now believe to be Tom Potter, Senecas father-in-law.

I looked a number of places, but for the most part I looked in the area of Glen Falls NY and the surrounding area of Queensbury, Bolton Warren, Lake George, and Senanac. I looked into various historical sites, family trees (right, wrong and confusing),The Chapman Historical Museum and Adirondack Museum and Wikipedia to name a few. I found all the Julia Stoddards and Julia Potters to be a challenge.I found a couple of photos of Juliet Stoddard. In one, with a group of women, there is an older Olive Stoddard that could be an aunt of hers and Senecas.I found a woman named Helen Ann Potter recently deceased may she RIP that had the exact same smile, nose and chin of the woman in my picture that believed to be Helen Augusta Potter. I'm looking for photos or pictures to compare with mine. Thanks for replying.

Hi, Seneca Ray Stoddard's parents were Charles M Stoddard and Julia Ray (maiden name) Seneca was b.13/May/1843-44. Seneca was named after his mother who died along with an infant in 1854 when Seneca was 10. Two years later Charles remarried Laura Cook, possibly because she was pregnant. Seneca's brother-in-law Charles O'Blenis (aka Oblienis)married Juliet Stoddard (b.1856 and also named after Julia Ray)Seneca's half-sister in 1872. They also had a premature conception and they had a girl named Ora May then in 1881 Edward O'Blenis.I am looking for Charles M. Stoddard's geneology.I may have a picture of Seneca's family taken by Seneca, but I'm looking for proof.I believe they are his wife Helen Augusta Potter, two boys Charles Hubert (abt. 10+) & LeRoy Ray (abt.4+),Tom Potter his father-in-law with his wife Helen or Ellen (?) and his guide friend Peter O'Malley with his wife Isabelle Beattie/O'Malley ( from Dundee Canada. I believe it was taken Easter Sunday 13/April/1879 as they are all wearing their Sunday best, in good spirits and standing in some shallow rapids.

Thank you so much for answering older posts! I hope we have the same John and Sarah Stoddard. You mentioned John was born in 1836 in Scotland. Is his birth date and place definite? My John and Sarah are in the 1850 census with John being listed as a lumberman born about 1820 (he would have been only 14 if he were born in 1836). They're in the 1860 census with John being born in PA about 1820. They're in the 1870 census with lumberman John being born about 1817 in PA. All of these confirm to be my John and Sarah because my aunt personally knew Donald Aikman who was living with the 85 year old Sarah in the 1910 census. Sarah's birth year (1825) is consistent in all 4 records. Do you have census records that show a different John and Sarah or do you have other resources? I would love to see whatever you have. This has been a real brick wall for me as I don't even know Sarah's maiden name. If all of this pans out, I guess you and I would be either 5th cousins or half-fourth cousins.
Thanks again!
David
I see this post is a few years old but I stumbled upon in when researching my Great Great Great Grandpa John Stoddard. He was born in 1836 in Scotland. Eventually came over to the U.S. in which he married (total of three women, Sarah, Elizabeth, and an Emma Eckersley of which I'm related through. (He was Mormon). They had LOTS of children including a Mary Stoddard (your relative) and a Joseph Stoddard (my relative). John Stoddard owned Stoddard Lumber Company in Baker Oregon. They were very successful and well off. If you get this message and would like any more information please let me know!

Obit of Mrs. Alonzo (Mahala Stoddard) Straight 1897

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

MRS. MAHALA M. STRAIGHT
NOVEMBER 5, 1897

Mrs. Mahala M. Straight, mother of Mr. J. A. Straight, residing southwest of town, and for many years a resident of this community, passed quietly away at her late home in Chicago on Wednesday (Nov.3) morning, shortly after midnight. Mrs. Straight had been in poor health since last February and her death was caused by heart failure.
Mahala M. Stoddard was born in Chatauqua county, New York, on March 23, 1835, and was united in marriage with Alonzo A. Straight on April 16, 1854. In September, 1856, Mr. and Mrs. Straight came to Illinois, settling in Cropsey township, McLean county, being the second family to settle in the township. After Mr. Straight's death, a number of years ago, our subject made her home with her father or children until about five years ago, when she went to Chicago, where she and her daughter have since resided. She leaves to mourn her departure three sons and one daughter, namely: J.A., of this place; Dora, unmarried, who has resides with her mother in Chicago; O.B., of Belleflower; Frank, of Omaha, Neb.; and other relatives and hosts of friends in whose memories her pleasant and cultured manner will ever cause her to remain.
Funeral services were held from the home in Chicago, after which the remains were taken to Fairbury. A service was held at the home of her brother-in-law, Mr. R.C.
John Stoddard d. 1661 is my 9th great grandfather so i would be extremely interested in getting a copy of the genealogy. I'd be pleased to pay for the cost of copying. Assuming your document is loose leaf, Kinko's should be able to scan to pdf, or alternatively photcopy doc for a reasonable cost. I am a member of NEHGS but they do not have a digital reference available. Anyway, if you have a Kinko's that is convenient you could contact them to get a price and advise me. Thanks very much, WAB

Hi Jim, I am a descendant of your Arvin's brother: Nathaniel Stoddard, b. 1798 in Woodbury, CT. son of Ichabod and Mary. My search is for info to prove the fr-son link of Ichabod and Nathaniel. I have quite a bit on Ichabod's ancestry, smaller amount on him and his family in Canada but can share if you would like it. Do you know where Ichabod was buried, or the church he attended? This may help my search. Thanks, Ginger

Hello. I was going through my mother's old pictures that I got when she passed away. I have just recently started working on my family tree, and I am not sure if I am related to this person or not, but it is a very nice picture that I thought someone would probably love to have. My mother had a nice picture of a Nancy Stoddard. I am not sure if it is her maiden or married name. It was taken in the Christmas of 1969. If anyone would be interested in having this picture, I would be more then happy to scan it for you. My mother was Janet Louise Conrad from Liverpool, Nova Scotia in case anyone was wondering.

Tammy
nickerson_tm@yahoo.com

I found quite a bit in the Vermont Index. There is also a book "Newport and The Northwest Kingdom" that has info on the first settlers.
The first permanent settlement was made in 1795, by Judge Timothy Hinman, who came on from Southbury, Conn., with his family, and located upon the farm now owned by Charles Johnson and others. He was one of the original proprietors, and the only one of them who ever settled here. Mr. Hinman was one of the most prominent men of the town for many years, being the first town clerk, first justice of the peace, and first representative. He married Phoebe Stoddard and reared a family of eleven children, two of whom, Mrs. Horace Stewart and Mrs. Clarissa Forbes, are living. His death occurred in 1880.

In the autumn of 1790, be came to the town and located his farm, though he did nothing towards improving it until 1795. From Greensboro, a distance of thirty miles, he made the journey on horseback, leaving his nearest neighbors at that point. In the autumn of that year, however, he was joined by Henry Buzzell, from Danville, who located upon the farm now owned by Mr. Blake, and John, Joseph and Henry Merritt made a settlement upon the farm now owned by Carlos Daggett, and Rufus Stewart, from Brattleboro, came in 1797, and settled upon the farm now owned by George Eaton. His death occurred in 1850.

In 1794, a Mr. Strong came on from Connecticut and built a saw-mill where West Derby now is, to which was added a grist-mill not long after. Benjamin Hinman, from Southbury, Conn., who was so long prominently identified with the interests of the town, came on with men who built the mill, in the capacity of cook. He returned to Connecticut with them in the autumn, stayed through the winter, and then came on and made the first settlement upon the farm now owned by Mr. Watson.

The settlement of the town rapidly increased, so that in 1800, it had a population of 178. The first town meeting was held at the house of Timothy Hinman, March 29, 1798, when the following officers were elected: Timothy Hinman, moderator and clerk; Isaac Hinman, Elisha Lyman, and Henry Buzzel, selectmen; Rufus Stewart, constable; Samuel Hill, grand juror; James Greenleaf, Isaac Hinman, and Elisha Lyman, listers; Aaron Vilas, Henry Buzzell, Eliphalet Bangs, and Elisha Lyman, surveyors of highways; Jehiel Broadman, sealer of weights and measures; and Samuel Hill and Aaron Vilas, fence viewers.

The first freemen's meeting was held September 4, 1798, when nine votes were cast for Paul Bingham for governor, and Timothy Hinman elected representative. The first hotel was kept by Timothy Hinman, where Charles Johnson now resides. Ezra Hinman, son of Judge Hinman, was the first male child born, and Rachel Buzzell, daughter of Henry Buzzell, was the first female born. Levi Bigelow kept the first store. The first deaths were two children of Solomon Ashley, in 1800. The first school was kept by David Bebee, on the farm of Timothy Hinman. The first physician was Luther Newcomb, who came from Massachusetts in 1798. The first deed recorded in the town was given to Ebenezer Strong, of Southbury, Conn., by Moses Robinson, of Bennington, bearing date of January 12, 1790, and acknowledged January 18, 1791. The first settled Congregational minister was Luther Leland, about 1808, and the first Baptist clergyman was Samuel Smith. Both came about the same time and the right of land set aside for the first settled minister was divided between them.

Major Rufus Stewart, born in 1776, came to Derby in 1797, and made the first settlement upon the farm now owned by George S. Eaton, where he resided until 1812, when he removed his family to Morgan and joined the American army, ranking as captain. He served three years, was at the battle of Plattsburgh, and, in 1816, returned to Derby and purchased the farm now owned by his son, Emery Stewart, where he died in June, 1846, aged seventy-one years. His wife died in 1842. Two of their six children are living—Emery, on the old homestead, and Nancy, widow of Aaron Hinman, at Derby village.

Horace Stewart, son of Major Rufus, who died at Beebe Plain, May 25, 1883, was born here September 25, 1804. About 1826, after alternating between the farm and an indifferent experience in trade, he went to Beebe Plain and erected the plain, yet comfortable and substantial buildings which still stands unimpaired by time. He soon rose in the esteem of those around him and came to be regarded as one of the first business men in the county. It is a little remarkable that notwithstanding his large business, extending from the Connecticut river far into Canada, and involving dealings with all kinds of men, he never was charged with violating an agreement or indulging in a trick. February 3, 1830, he married Catharine Hinmen, a woman of remarkable kindness and benevolence, who survives him. There were four children born to them, only one of whom, a daughter, is living. With the death of Mr. Stewart, Derby lost not only one of its most enterprising business men, but one of the most kindly, courteous, and hospitable gentlemen of the town, while his family has to mourn the departure of a most considerate husband, father and brother. Mr. Stewart was a man of commanding figure and gentlemanly deportment, of very even temper, ever having a kind word for all, yet strict and rigid in rules of business.

Phineas Stewart, brother of Rufus, went from Brattleboro, Vt., to Plainville, Ohio, where he died in 1871. His daughter, Sophia D., married R. S. Brown, of Brattleboro, who is now living in Malone, N. Y., she having died in October, 1871. Their daughter Annie married Rufus P. Stewart, son of Horace Stewart, in May, 1871. One son, Harry B., now resides at Beebe Plain.
