Wondering if anyone has any sources or information on Edward Worth Stokely. He was born around 1843, and according to my mother, he died under somewhat mysterious circumstances after selling horses to the military (abt. 1870). He was married to Louisa Banard. He lived in Clairborne, TN.

Hello Tracie:

William G Stokely is buried here in Ohio (Columbus) at Camp Chase a Civil War Camp. His brother John Married Sarah F Adnerws (looks like a relative). I don't know if I am related to the Stokelys of Northern Florida or not (btw I grew up in Panama City, Bay county, in northern Florida). I am related to the Stokelys in Eastern Tennessee who are where from Warren county North Carolina. If I could trace John D to one of them I would be a lot closer to putting this puzzle together.

Gordon Stokely
Hi - I, too, have been looking for information on this family. John's wife,Sarah, was Sarah Brigham- the daughter of Emerald Brigham and Martha Mott. She and John Stokely were married March 20, 1839 in Leon County, Florida. I haven't been able to find any more info on JOhn's ancestors. I descend through his son, William through William's daughter, Mary Eliza Stokely who married John Mitchell Andrews.

Ancestors of John D Stokely of Florida

I need some help establishing the ancestors and birth place (city and or county) of John D Stokely. The 1850 census of Jefferson county Florida shows him being 40 years old (D.O.B. ~1810) and living with his wife Sarah and their two children John (E) and William G. It also has him listed as being from North Carolina. They are later found in the 1860 and 1870 census of Wakalla County Florida. I know there where/are several pockets of Stokelys / Stokleys from North Carolina; New Hanover County, Pasquantank County, Warren/Bute County & others.
Dear Steve
As your message was posted 7 years ago you may not even get this, i hope you do. I am researching my maternal family from Cambridge, name of Stoakley. I have traced them back to Norfolk a John Stoakley in Walsingham b1752. They appear on censuses as Stoakley, Steakley, Stokely and Stockley. I wonder if your connections are related. I come from very nearby, Milton, Cambs near Ely!

Hi dotti-

i am not directly related to the lawson/stokely family (as far as i know right now) but Jacob (with Elizabeth and William) lived 2 families away from my ggg gparents John Graham and Ann Stokely in the 1850 census for mason county (Ann also born in delaware). i am trying to connect my Ann to Jacob, William and Elizabeth but have yet to find any info. the last breakthrough i came across was a posting regarding Perry Cullen and Rachel Short (who was also born in delaware) but in the posting she was referred to as "Rachel Short Stokely". Perry and Rachel eventually moved to Missouri where she died in 1884. John and Ann Graham were listed as #600, Elizabeth, Jacob and William #602 and Perry and Rachel #593. i don't know if this helps or not but something to think about, considering i haven't had any new leads in about 5 years! good luck,

kim graham clark

Hi
This is an old arguement in the Towles/Stokely clan. According to John's will Ann was not married to Henry. It was her sister Elizabeth. There is some debate about John and Elizabeth too. Find a message from Bob Stokely and
get his e-mail address. He is decended from this line. I'll dig out the will and quote it exactly for you later. It's 630 AM and i'm not up to digging in the files yet. Good luck
Pat (Stokley) Nietupski

children of Bessie Stokely and Paul "Wiley" Howard

There's been a discussion on the Stokely mailing list about this family. Here's what little I know.

Bessie was born in KY in 1894, the last of 8 children of Francis Marion Stokely and Marian Frances Perkins. She married Wiley Howard (my family has him listed as "Wyley").
Somewhere on the Internet, I found these 2 birth records:
Woodford Co., KY Birth Certificates:
ULYSSIS E HOWARD 1 25 1914 BESSIE STOKELEY 5444
AUTHOR HOWARD 2 13 1917 BESSIE STOKELEY 10469

The discussion on the list indicates that Bessie had at least 3 other children, Ellen b. about 1914, Sherman b. about 1919, and Mary Joe b. about 1920.

Sometime after 1954, Bessie married James A. Rowe. My mom (Bessie's niece), said Bessie moved to Cincinnati and spent most of her life there.

In 2000, my cousin sent me this info:
"Bessie E. Rowe, looks like she died in Texas. Marshall or Jefferson Texas.
In looking at address book of mama's (Evelyn Brown Cox) that had lots of info, she has reached Aunt Bessie at Paul Howard's, Ellen Nunnelly's and Nolan & Mary Brooks'. Also had her at Marshall Manor in Marshall Texas."

Bessie's sister, Fannie Lillian (my grandmother), passed away in 1981. We believe Bessie was living in Texas at the time.

If anyone has any additional info on Bessie or her family, please let me know.

Chris, Maybe I can help---assuming your Stokely line is in my family line. I know nothing of your Dad, David and his reported 6 siblings or their families, However, if his Dad was one John Hugh Stokely born in the 1920's in Cocke Co, Tn and married to a Effie Mae (Bargo) Stokely......I can help you from John on backwards for a few generations. I believe John was in fact in the Army in 1953, married Effie Mae (from Ky I think) and probably had children while stationed there. This John was my half uncle on my mom's side.
I will dig thru my notes and see what I can come up with. First tho, Your GP was known as 'Buster' to all his family and friends. I don't know if he used that name or not after he left home. I believe your GM was referred to as Aunt Mae. Other names to research for your GP's peers are: Taylor and Ellington from SC. Other surnames you may want to research for your GGP/GGM and their elders are: Presley, Caldwell, Varner, Reece, Easterly, Ottinger, and others....These are TN,SC, NC kinfolks. Your GGM and my GM are one and the same person. Also you may want to scroll down to the July 20, 2003 (Under Stokely) msg on this web site and correspond with the lady there. . I helped her a couple of years ago. She is a daughter of Buster's brother, Horace Ray Stokely. Maybe she has some new info since I last chatted with her. Further info to your local addy later if you have interest. Floyd

I've used FamilyTreeMaker for some time so haven't been looking and haven't used any freeware in a while. But try doing a google on "gedcom" rather than "gencom", and put words like software, free, freeware, etc. in the search phrase -- here is a site offering freeware:
http://www.1stopfreeshop.com/gensoft.htm

Hope that helps.

Stokely (Prettyman & Ann) in Philadelphia 1830

I have an alphabet sampler that was handed down in my father's family. I'm pretty sure it was stitched by my 3g-grandmother, Elizabeth E. (Negley) Casperson circa 1835. Names on the sampler are in two columns.

LEFT COLUMN:
John L. Negley
Susanna Negley
Prettyman Stokely
Ann Stokely
William Negley
Elizabeth Negley
Jacob Negley
James R. Negley
William P. Negley
Ann S. Negley
William F. Negley
Rebecca F. Negley

RIGHT COLUMN:
Mary H. Negley
Sarah F. Negley
Abigail S. Negley
Mary Hughes, Teacher
William Folwell
Rebecca Folwell
Elizabeth E. Negley (aged 11 years and 4 months)

The death certificate of my 2g-grandmother, Anna M. (Casperson) Young, gives her mother's name as "Elizabeth Nagley," and the Young Family Bible lists her parents as Elizabeth E. Negley and Hance Casperson. I have a lot of Census information, which is confusing, but which is teasingly connected to the names on the sampler. For example, Anna M[aria] Casperson is enumerated in the 1850 Census in Philadelphia, age 6, living with: Elizabeth Naglee, 69 (probably her maternal grandmother), Ann Casperson, 37 (probably her paternal aunt), Andrew and Abbey Bang (probably Anna M. Casperson's "Aunt Abby [Abigal S. Negley?] and Uncle Andrew" mentioned in an 1865 letter), and Sarah [possibly Negley] [Mrs. Henry] Beadding; the men were all sailors. In the 1870 Census, Anna Casperson, 64, is living as a domestic with Sarah Folwell, 74; in 1880 she is an "inmate" at the Penn Asylum (now the "Penn Home") on Susquehanna Avenue, where she probably was living when she died circa 1886.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Michael Willis Freeland
Wynnewood, Pennsylvania

I have a direct line going back to Jehu the First that is pretty well complete at this point. What I need is info connecting John Jehu to Samuel G. Stokely which is all in Wales. I know Jehu was forced to serve in the Royal Navy for seven years. I know Samuel was married to the Queen's cousin as a reward for his service during the Spanish Armada war. I can fill you in from Jehu to the present. Can you help me trace Jehu backwards to Samuel? Let me know.
Horace Watson Stokely was my great, great grandfather. He had some children that I know a little about. John Hugh Stokely is my grandfather. His brother was named Horace ray Stokely. My grandfather Horace was nicknamed "Buster" and had, other than horace had these siblings: Cecil Creed Stokely, James Robert Stokely and Burlene Stokely. From John Hugh Stokely (My GP) he had these children: Wayne, Eugene, Carl, David Lee, Calvin and Earl, one sister (unknown) and one that died early. David Lee is/was my dad and had one additional child, Michelle Stokely. My GP, John Hugh, died approx 1950/1960s of cancer.
Male history for my line

In case anyone wants to add to their own line or help me add to mine, here is the male only connection all the way back to Samuel G Stokely: From now to the past in order)

Christopher John David Stokely (me)
David Lee Stokely (my biodad)
John Hugh "Buster" Stokely
Horace Watson Stokely
James D.A. Stokely
Charles Huff Stokely
David Royal Stokely
John Jehu Stokely
Samuel G. Stokely

I have tons of who married who now, children, birth places, etc. all thanks to info given to me by Floyd Pack (God bless him). 3 days ago for the last 33 years I have known nothing about my heritage and now, I couldn't be more happy. The frequent military services is nothing but sweet irony as I myself served in the USAF. If anyone needs anything that "I" can help with, I would be pleased to return the favor given to me. Please contact me directly:

obad-hai@insightbb.com

Here is some new info

I have just begun my search but with the he\lp of a few others here have some information you would find useful. Hopefully we can share what we know. Here's what I have:

My dad, David Lee Stokely (SS# 368-30-2810) had 5 brothers and one sister. One of the brothers died young and I don't have his name or the sister's name. The other brothers are Carl, Earl, Calvin and Wayne.

Their father Was John Hugh "Buster" Stokely born sometime in the 1920s. He had a brother Horace Ray Stokely. John's wife was Effie Mae (Bargo) Stokely. Her SS# is 407-30-2810. She remarried after John's death and became a Brandenburg.

Effie Mae Stokely-Brandenburg signed my mother (Summer Star Winslow) and David Lee's marriage consent (He was only 17) in Knox, Kentucky.

This is all I have. I hope to hear from you. Contact me directly at:

obad-hai@insightbb.com
My mom say John Hugh Stokely rings a bell. She knows he was military and served some time in Hawaii and Kentucky. We have one picture of him holding an infant but thats all. Effie Mae remarried after his death and became Effie Mae Brandenburg. Her social Sec. # was 407-30-2810. Maybe we have a connection somewhere. I am new to all of this and am still ion the raw data collection stage. If ANYONE has ANYTHING please send to the email"

obad-hai@insightbb.com
