Just to update your records: (Children of William David & Luncinda all born in Rock Castle Co. Ky: Andrew Stokes b. June 25, 1884, James S Stokes b. Aug 1887, Charles H. Stokes b. Aug 1889, Lilly D. Stokes b. May 1890, Lolly C. Stokes b. Jan 1893, Allis M. Stokes b. June 1894, Viney Stokes b. Sept. 1897)

In 1882 Edward L. Stokes was born to William and Lucinda. His death record shows this and did not appear on the one census I've found because he had already left the home.

My great grandfather was Samuel Stokes. He had a twin brother Louis (sp.?) Samuel was married to Emma from what I can tell through census pages.
Samuel and Emma had two sons; Wade Hampton Stokes and Claud (Matthew?) Stokes. Wade moved to Chicago Heights, IL. and married Fannie Hazel(nee Nantz)Stokes. Their sons were Louis Stokes and my father Robert Wayne Stokes. Wade's brother Claud stayed in Indiana and lived in the Hammond, IN. area. Samuel at about the age of 70 moved to Illinois to live with his son and family until his death. This is all I know so far. If you have any info about this group of the Stokes family I would really like to hear from you. Thank you very much. It would be great if we were family.

This reply is very late indeed but I have some information on your Philip Joseph Stokes. He was born in Egham in Surrey and christened in Englefield Green (a neighbouring village) on 4 December 1887. His parents were Philip Joseph Stokes and Sarah Ann Ward.

You probably already know this but Philip Joseph Stokes was one of the victims of the Titanic which sank in April 1912. His last known address was at 91 Hawstead Road, Catford.

http://incatford.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/titanic-100th-annive...

Additional information on Florence:

Florence Marie Jasperson, b. 1899 in Wisconsin to Danish immigrants Sam(uel) b. 1849 and Carrie Hansen 1862-1942. It appears Florence was the youngest of several siblings; it's unclear if there were two couples named Samuel and Carrie Jasperson, or if Samuel possibly had another wife before Carrie that I've yet to track down.

I've still got very little on Allen Stokes, but Florence was possibly his second wife. The 1910 census shows an Allen Y Stokes married to a Gertrude K living in Baltimore, which is the city Allen and Florence Stokes were living with their daughter in 1930, but not the same house.

If any of this seems familiar, concerning Allen or Gertrude, please reply to this thread & I'll get an alert. Thanks!

Here's what I know:

My paternal grandmother's mother (deceased Nov 2000) was Florence "Flossie" Stokes, b. 1899. Flossie had several strokes before she passed, and she always seemed reluctant to talk about her husband "Al Stokes", who supposedly owned or was associated with a circus.

I finally found a record in the 1930 census of Baltimore, MD that shows Flossie's husband listed as "Allen Y", b. abt 1880 in Virginia. It also shows Florence as being born in Wisconsin. I am unable to find *any* other documentation that even proves he existed.

If this sounds familiar to anyone, I would very much appreciate any additional information on either family. Their only daughter is my paternal grandmother, still living, and even she seems to have very limited information on her family history.

If you give me some dates for William Stokes, I might be able to help.

I am not an expert on this branch of the Stokes family. However, I have done some research on it in order to determine if it is related to my Stokes branch.

There is also a little bit of information out there on the internet related to this Stokes family. If I were you, I would just Google "Young Stokes" "White County". The progenitor of most Stokeses of White County was a man named Young Stokes, who is buried at Stokes Chapel Cemetery in Crossville, IL: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=10...

Young Stokes is a very common name within many of the branches of the Stokes family, which suggests that many (if not all) of these branches are related somehow.

Best Wishes,
Jay Stokes

HI Pauline:

I have a lot of research done on the family . If you would like I will invite you to look at the tree. Remember it is a work in progress and you may have to search through some duplicate entries. I hate when you add information and if something is slightly different it gets added as a new person. What I have done sometimes for my own benefit is add a number after the name until I get everything sorted out. For instance Francis Stokes1. Let me know if it is helpful and if youhave any new information let me know.

Terry Stokes Sharpe

My grandfather, John Washington Stokes, was a War Betweem The States. drummer in the Sixieth Alabama , Company E. His first wife was mary Jane McCoy who is buried in Bonifay Florida. John is buried with a civil war tombstone a few miles north in Hartford Alabama. He was reported to be a "Doctor" amd relatives have sent me his precriptions circa the 1880's, constiting of a lot of whiskey. He was with Robert E. Lee at Appamattox when he surrendered.
