The orginial Stout's are John Stout and Elisabeth Bee married on November 13,1609 from Their son Richard Stout married Penelope Kent Van Princes from England. Although the census shows Penelope by different last name but spelled almost the same. There is a lot of history on both Richard Stout and Penelope (Van Princes or Princess) in 1600s. They lived in New Jersey. It will take a lot of research but to previous information will help you trace your family history.

There are many stories and few facts.
My timeline assumes that Penelope's ship was the Kath, that the Kath shipwrecked in the summer of 1648, and that she was age 22 and unmarried in Gravesend at the time of the slander trial in Sept 1648.
The oldest accounts of 1765, 1790, 1813 do not specify how long she was held by the Indians.

Hi,
I am looking at the 1870 & 1880 United States Federal Census about Elizabeth Stout of which both show a different birth place and year. Also I have a copy of her Obituary. The Obituary confirms the DOB. on Birth 10 Aug 1848. So my question is where is she from. Is it Bavaria / Bayern or Tennessee? If it truely is the one from Bavaria/Bayern What happened to the children listed on 1870 Census? I question this because her son, Matthew Mathias Stout is my great great grandfather and his daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Harriet Stout is my great grandmother.

Here is the Obituary I found:
Obituary Fayetteville Daily, Nov 4, 1931, Fayetteville, AR, page 1 (on microfilm, index in Grace Keith Collections, Fayettevil le Public Library). Mrs. S. E. Stout buried Monday Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Mustain Stout, 83, died Sunday at he r home several miles south east of Fayetteville. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o' clock a t White church. Mrs. Stout was born Aug. 10, 1848. She was married in 186 2 to Jerry Stout. Of their 12 children, nine survive: Mrs . Harriett Goble, Mat Stout, Mrs. Mary White, John Stout, G eorge Stout, Tom Stout, Jim Stout, Weslet Stout and Mrs. Ly dia Turner. She leaves also 30 grandchildren, one sister, M rs. Mag Wallace of Eureka Springs and one brother, Hugo Mus tain of Stigler, Okla. Mr. Stout preceded her in death 25 y ears. (sic)

I'm looking for information on Albert Stout, son of Benjamin Stout and Mary C. Burrows of WV. I have that he died at the age of 22? I dont have much info on Mary Cottrill, his wife, so I assume since she might have been in her early 20s with a very young son (James E Stout), that she would have remarried. If you have any information on these people. I would really appreciate.

I am a descendant of Anna Bollen (b. abt. 1657--daughter of Captain James Bollen), and Johnathan Stout. They were married abt. 1685.

Does anyone know about Captain James Bollen's parents? Some researchers have his parents as Robert Bollen (1595-1634) and
Jean [--?--] of Hingham, Norfolk, England, married 1629. I am looking for proof of this.

Also, I've read that tradition says he was of the same Boleyn line as Anne Boleyn.
Hello Teri,

Your grandfather appears to be part of my family line. If His name is Oliver Kenneth Stout, Jr. His Father was Oliver Kenneth Stout, Sr. married to Josie B Waldrum. Oliver K Stout, Sr. moved to California along with some of his siblings. Desmond Sherman Stout, his brother, was my Grt. Grandfather. Their parents were Mary Ellen Rambo and John H. Stout. At this point I come to a dead end. I have some leads that Moses Stout (New Jersey) and Catharine are John's parents but some of the dates don't make sense so I hesitate to include them. I am hoping to go to OHIO, IOWA and NEW JERSEY within the next few years to look for data on this.

I find the the stories about indians very interesting. I heard some childhood stories as well, but to this date have no proof.

I believe that Oliver Sr. would have been the one to ride the rails. Their parents John and Mary Ellen died when the kids were young, they are lost on the census for many years then reappear in areas of Southern California. My Grt. Grandfather was a brakeman for the Southern Pacific Railroad.

I have a family bible with John/Mary Ellen Stout's (dates and children hand entered on it) if your would like a copy for your records. Let me know.

Also, any family stories or information would be appreciated so we can put the pieces of the puzzle together.

Thank you, Heidi Stout-Lucas

Penelope held by Indians?

Just a quick question to Jim..It looks as if your timeline totally refutes that she was held by the indians for 2 or 3 years. Is there a court document from Gravesend? Have you looked at the possibility of her being born in 1632 and was shipwrecked in 1647? Maybe she was held for only a year. I have nothing to back this up except for the original story. By the way, I am a cousin through her granddaughter Penelope who married a Falkinburg. Now there is another New Jersey story..Henry Jacobs Falkinburg!

A Scranton city directory for 1907 lists Preston, a blacksmith, living with Margaret, a student. No mention of Nellie.
Nellie marries Harry L.

The research is fascinating. I started in 2001 to find my mother's father's side of the family, but there wasn't much I could find, other than his family & possible place where his family came from, because he passed away when she was 3 & didn't know much of that side of the family, in fact I didn't know much about her side of the family, other than her mom my Grandmother August(Stout)VanMeter. No history was given other than one comment many years ago when my grandmother stated that we are "heinz 57" of a family, naming Scottish, English, German, French, and so forth. As I was younger I didn't know that she really meant that. I didn't try again unitl she passed away, unfortunately in 2010 & I had gathered a lot about the family, but got stuck a little after about 4 generations. But it wasn't until I visited New Jersey & by chance of taking a picture of an old cemetary as we drove did I find 2 Stout headstones on the front line of this cemetary. I was proofing the pics that night, and zoomed in on the cemetary pic & there they were. I was flabbergasted, and these were the peices I needed to connect the rest of the generations. Now I am clear into the 1400's, and am trying to connect the info I found from the 500's, 1000's & so forth. I can't wait, but so much to sift through; some true & some not. Have fun

The Lawrence Stout that I know of his mom was born in VA, supposedly Lynchburg. I heard his dad was suppose to have been married to his mom, but I can find no record of it. He had no brothers or sisters that we know of. They came to Phil. PA in the 20's or 30's, lived most of their lives in Pittsburgh PA. Martha Stout died in 1974 and Lawrence died in 1993. I am married to Lawrence Stout Jr. have been since 1956 and as far as I know, no one in the family has ever seen Louis Stout. Maybe the family of the 20's know who he is.

I found some of the same info you found. I dont know if you know anything about Pittsburgh or not. I was born and raised there. The Rosalia Found. Home I was told as a kid was for girls having babies. I meantioned to my husband that I saw his gr.mother listed as Mr. Browns wife. My husband knew his gr.mother was living with Mr. Brown and was never married to him. We also found out that some one else (not Louis Stout) was listed as the father of Lawrence Stout. After finding things thru Ances.com about my own ancesters, there was a lot of things being hidden. Do you know if you are related the this "Louis/Lewis" Stout. Do you know if the Stout you know was actually married to Martha. Her maiden name was Andrews. Our Lawrence Stout who thought he was born in Lynchburg VA. We also found out by the birth certificate he was born in Homestead but his mom and her family did come from Virginia what part we do not know. This family never asked questions. I like to know these things. Thank you for the info. There is no one living in the Stout family that I know of who could add anything else to this.

I guess we will never know anymore than we already know and it really doesn't matter now that we are up in age. But thanks for the info you did send at least I know about the Convent it was still run by the nuns when it became a foundling home.

While going through boxes of genealogical material compiled by my grandfather in the 1930s I came across a photo of a woman purported to be an ancestor born in 1777. She is a very elderly woman in the photo.
The name on the reproduced photo is "Ann Tyler". The family trees and other information do not show her in the charts. So, on the oft chance someone in here knows, I've attached the photo. She appears to be part Native American, and according to stories my mother told me, we have some Senaca in our background. My McWhorter ancestors passed through Upstate NY in the late 1700s and my Willett ancestors were early pioneers in KY in the early 19th century.

Please respond via my regular e-mail address as I am not a regular subscriber to Ancestry. gizathecat at yahoo dot com

Thank you
Lydia Gaebe Bishop

Hi there I am the one who originally started this thread. I lost track of my research for the longest time because we've moved around. But my name is Carol Stout. I am married to Jeffery Lynn Stout Jr. We are now settled down in Dorchester, SC and aren't planning to go anywhere anymore! My brother in law Freddy told me someone named Katrinka Stout left a message on his machine recently but I haven't been able to get over to hear it. If this is you, please contact me at our email address at erol2743@att.net and I will email you with the house phone number here. Jeffery is out of town and has been for a month and a half but will return March 29th. He is gone for Army related training but I would be more than happy to speak with you or you can wait till Jeff returns next week or so to speak to him.

I can help you on this. You have the accident information correct. If we are speaking of the same person, he has a son Jeffrey Lynn Stout SR., Jonathan A Stout, James A stout, Daniel E Stout, daughter Christian Stout (adopted) and step son, Jason L Lantry. I am Jason's wife. He was married to a woman named Annette, whom he was married to when he passed in the wreck. He also served in the Navy for 23 years and moved to South Carolina, where he became a truck driver. The accident was March 25, 1995. The obituary came out April 1, 1995. He was loved very much and I can speak with for my husband as he would love to know his other family. I do know his kids stayed in contact with his wife at the time of passing, but eventually contact was lost. If we are talking of the same person please feel free to msg me. My name is Jennifer.

Then in 1880 you will find them in the same place using the name Jeremiah Stout 32 born Ark., Sarah E. 28 born Ten., Matt age 10, Mary F. age 8, Jonathan, George, female (cannot read name).
Penelope: A Novel of New Amsterdam

Penelope: A Novel of New Amsterdam

The paperback book Penelope: A Novel of New Amsterdam has just been released. This tale of 17th century adventure was inspired by the original 18th century reports in Smith and Edwards/Benedict, each of which were two pages long. Therefore, any lengthy description of Penelope Stout is mostly fiction.

In addition to the standard shipwreck and encounter with Indians, this story increases drama with pirates/privateers, an investigtion into the murder of Penelope's father, an argument with Peter Stuyvesant, and a dramatic climax that threatens Penelope's life. Again.

The author includes numerous historical characters and ships and captures the temper of the times, when being Anabaptist was not popular.

If you're frustrated with the lack of facts about Penelope, then enjoy a well-written drama about how her journey might have happened.

See http://www.fiction-addiction.com/si/9780985112202N.html
Re: Penelope Stout's shipwreck

Jim,

It is rather unlikely that the Kath was the ship which brought Penelope Prince to the New World. This idea has become popular among many Stout researchers based upon the fact that the ship was stranded at Sandy Hook in the fall of 1648. However, the fact that the ship became stranded at Sandy Hook after its return from Curacao as a privateer vessel is somewhat inconsistant with the traditional accounts of Penelope's arrival related by Samuel Smith, Morgan Edwards, David Benedict, etc.

The Kath under Hans Jelisz sailed from Amsterdam for New Amsterdam, where it arrived before June 6, 1647. The yacht Kath was then ordered, along with the Liefde, to cruise against the Spaniards. By February 19, 1647/48, both ships were reported at Curaçao, where they remained due to damage from storms and the illness of crew. The following July 2, 1648, it was reported that the Kath under Hans Wyer had captured a Spanish bark called the Nostra Senora Rosario below Margarita Island and brought the ship north to Manhattan. That same day in a suit before the Council at New Amsterdam, Hendrick Van Dyck sought recovery of some pieces of eight and pearls taken from the Spanish ship by the crew of the Kath. By November 9, 1648, the ship under Jeuryaen Andriessen had been reported as stranded on Sandy Hook, New Jersey, at which time the captain and crew requested final settlement of their wages before the Council at New Amsterdam.

Penelope Prince was already established at Gravesend prior to September 12, 1648, when she was mentioned in a suit for slander between Ambrose London and the wife of Thomas Aplegate recorded in Gravesend Town Records. It seems likely that she was already living in Gravesend well before the Kath ever became stranded at Sandy Hook, which would have occurred sometime between July 2nd and November 9, 1648.

http://www.valsamides-design.com/stout/richardstout.html

Mark

Re: Penelope Stout's shipwreck

Jim,

In having an opportunity to now look at the Council Minutes of November 9, 1648, the entry states that the Kath "arrived here from Curaçao with a cargo inside Sandy Hook, otherwise called Godyn Point, in a safe port" (which I would interpret to be the Raritan Bay side of Sandy Hook) and "the wind being contrary, tried to tack to [the wind] before Fort Amsterdam, said yacht, in tacking, stranded on a sand bank with such force that notwithstanding all effort it could not be brought off." Perhaps this is just my interpretation, but my reading of the passage is that the ship was docked at Sandy Hook, but in departing from its docking there for Fort Amsterdam made a tacking manuever against the wind and hit a sand bank which split the ship, causing the loss of salt. The effects on the ship including the masts were taken off the ship by the crew, and the ship was abandoned. So it seems to suggest to me that the wreck occurred somewhere in the Raritan Bay area between Sandy Hook and Manhattan, but it isn't clear whether the wreck location was at Sandy Hook itself. The mention of Sandy Hook is a geographical reference to where the ship had been docked after coming back from Curacao on its way to nearby Fort Amsterdam, but not necessarily where the wreck occurred. A small point, but it does differ with the traditional account of Penelope and her Dutch husband being stranded at Sandy Hook and being left behind there. But I suppose "Sandy Hook" is a general term and could refer to any area nearby in the Raritan Bay.

There is certainly nothing wrong with differences of opinion nor debate. As for Penelope's presence at Gravesend, I make no case for how long she had been there nor did I say she had been there a long time, only that it was a possible interpretation one could make from the 1648 court record. We do not know either way. I make no statement totally dismissing the Kath as the ship of Penelope's arrival, but I do feel there are discrepancies with the traditional accounts and chronological considerations which should be noted.

Mark
