Re: Jacob STOVER married Nancy MNU & lived Lincoln, MO in 1880

Hi Stover family,
As I have been reading these stories I'm sure I discovered the same as you have that Stauffer/Stover are not the same as the STOVER family who lived in Virginia.
At least from what i am gathering of information and records left by historians and genealogists who were following the Stauffer/Stover/Meyer/Myers family who were Mennonites settling in Bucks and Montgomery Counties outside of Philadelphia we are talking about a totally different bloodline here.

"Stover" was a "chosen" name (sounding more English) that was changed from Stauffer by the children of Henry and Barbara (Hockman) Stauffer (children were the first generation Americans)
Their parents had married the day they left for America so none of their children were born in the old country.
Their five children named in the Stauffer/Stover history geneaology were: Ulrich, Barbara, Henry, JACOB (my husband's g5grandfather) and Ralph.

I only have history for the descendants of JACOB STOVER who married Elizabeth Swartz (wife #1) and Catherine (?) wife #2 at least 20 years later.. after Elizabeth I had died.
Not sure which of the nine children named belonged to which wife..this info is not given us. It seems most of Elizabeth's children were pretty young at that time.

Elizabeth II(Jake I's and Liz I's daughter)was born in 1783 in Bedminster, Pa where her mother died in 1802 (same year her grandfather Henry Stauffer died) Her dad Jake I died in 1844 on April 28th, just 2 weeks before he'd have turned 93 on May 13th of that year.

Acutally, just noticed that unless there is a mistake in the dates Elizabeth II's mother died on the exact same day she and Phillip KRATZ JR. were married, June 17th, 1802. This will be an interesting story to know whether or not the death resulted from an accident or something unusual. Normally a daughter wouldn't marry the same day her mother died.

Another interesting note is that KRATZ (the grandfather the Ben Franklin and Rachel Kratz kids) isn't followed in any way as far as his ancestors, where they were from or who they were as part of their family tree. Only Elizabeth, their grandmother Stover's line (daughter of Jacob I) is followed back through history. Henry and Barbara Stover are proudly mentioned and kept as part of the family tree while Phillip KRATZ family stops at him other than ELIZABETH II is being recognized as matriarch of that family. HE had died 13 years before her death in 1860. Both died at Deep Run in Buck's Co. so it's assumed they remained married throughout their life.

We determined by these records it's most likely Jacob II, Elizabeth II's brother would have been born about 1786 (give or take a year) to the same mother Elizabeth II was born three years earlier..Elizabeth Swartz Stover. there is no info on Catherine other than she had married Jacob Stover the first after he was a widower. No mention of dates for her birth, marriage to Jacob I or death.

I assume a couple of the kids may have been born to her though because as it is written "they" had 7 children and 9 are actually named. So again, assuming "they" as in "Jacob and Elizabeth Stover the second generation Americans who'd been born to Stauffer/Stover pioneers Henry and Barbara (Hockman) Stover. I assume they came from Germany though it isn't necessarily stated in this history.

Supposedly Elizabeth Stover II was an ENGLISH Quaker, not a Mennonite like her daughter, Rachel KRATZ (as in Liz II's husband Phillip) had been said to be at the time of marriage to Michael Myers, son of Christian Myers, son of JOHN MYERS (married to we think a Susanna Nash according to the earliest historical records) son of HANS, first settler here in the USA who'd settled in MONTGOMERY COUNTY. Hans' son John later purchased tracts of land in Bucks County,
the first in 1762.

Whatever the case of religious beliefs of Rachel Kratz mom, Elizabeth II, the Stover line in our family goes back to the first Stovers in that part of the country..Henry and Barbara, then to JACOB, on to ELIZABETH II, to Rachel Stover KRATZ Myers (Ben Franklin Myers wife) to Hannah (his daughter) who married Virgil Grabiel my husband's grandfather on his mother's side.

I did see somewhere else as I've been studying the Stover history on various ancestor sites that another Stover family (three brothers) came to Philadelphia at the same time (approximately) the Stauffers had. Two brothers stayed in Philly, the other went South to where nobody was quite sure but many believed would have been Virginia or NC. From what I'm reading it was the Shenandoah Valley in Va. Massanutten? I think that's the name of the mountains closest to the valley where they'd settled. this would have been your Stober/Stover line.

STOVER is simply a more English sounding name than Stauffer which is the only reason the kids first born into an English colony wanted to change theirs.

Hannah Myers was Grandfather Herrick Grabiel's mother. His Grandpa Michael had moved what seemed to be a very small family at the same time within 3 years of having married Rachel KRATZ.
it seems Jacob II (Rachel's mother Elizabeth II's brother) moved his family at the same time to the Indiana/Ohio territories where they purchased land and became homesteading farmers.

Jacob I is buried in Bedminster, Pa. where he'd been born and raised and married to both Elizabeth and Catherine to raise his 7 to 9 kids (however that works out as far as names vs. numbers recorded by these historian/genealogists.
Our Elizabeth II, Jake II's sister, was about 83 when she'd died in Deep Run, Buck's County Pa. (Feb. 16, 1860)

Her brother Jacob II is nowhere to be found in the Stover history other than that he was born to the same father as Elizabeth Stover had been. There are NO death records so it may be assumed he moved along with his niece's family most likely in a wagon train going west at the time. It's really very unlikely folks were travelling so far alone in those times. It seems to me as I'm looking at all the stories the youngest men would be looking for their own land to farm because the oldest LIVING SON of their large families inherited the homestead of a parents and/or grandparents.

from what I've gathered from David Stover and others who are looking for information about this Jacob he also had a son named Jacob and they settled in the territory of Indiana while Michael Myers and Jacob's niece Rachel Kratz Myers stayed in Ohio.

Michael's son, Benjamin Franklin Meyers, along with his Ohio born wife Sarah Sager, took some of their family to Indiana for a time and actually one of their children died there at the tender age of 6 yrs and 14 days according to this history.

It's obviously Rachel who passed down the stories to her children about the Stover family as they were recorded by the BF Myer's family who had recorded them while at the 1968 Family Reunion in Findlay Park, Findlay, Ohio.

Mary, the youngest daughter (and 14th child) of Benjamin and Sarah related the stories from memory to Clarence Lee and his wife, Bertha Lee and Clara Augsberger.
they put together the BF Myers Family Reunion committee who wrote this history/geneaology record they'd completed by the time of the 1972 Reunion.

My mother in law just gave me this little history booklet about 2 weeks ago so I'm still gathering the facts so i can put it all together with my side of a family tree for our children and children's children.

I like getting the facts straight for their sake so there isn't confusion once they hit our age and start searching for their own roots.

Maybe I'm also robbing them in some way by making it too easy. At the same time I so wish I'd have listened more to every elder who'd tried to share with us their stories while they were still with us to do so. I appreciate the labor invested by the folks who left this for the rest of us who are diligently searching and sorting through the tons of Jacobs, Elizabeths, Barbaras, Johns, etc. trying to figure out who's who among them.

Glad Mary Myers Kurtz was among the few among the last generation who may have been an exception to the rule as she cared enough to spend time with and listen to the stories from her grandparents and parents while they were there to share them.
Hopefully it's a teachable moment for us and our own.

Happy hunting, ya'll .. from down south here in the old Hillsboro Town of new Hillsborough, NC.
Karen Hartsell/Purcell Kolbinsky

I think I replied to the WRONG David Stover :) speaking of how many are out there. I meant that last post for David Stover 44, not 84. Is that right? see how it can get so confusing when you have a hundred or so of the SAME NAME.
fortunately for my husband (Kolbinsky) there are only a very few of them in this whole country. Then again, we can't find anyone at all with history beyond the first father who came through New Orleans to Ohio in the mid to late 1800's, Martin Kolbinsky, from either Prussia or Germany. They don't even have that much information. Trying to trace his family back to anyone before then has been one brick wall and dead end after another.
Anyone with ANY INFO on the KOLBINSKY family? please help!

I think you are correct, David. there is a different line of Stovers who'd changed their name from Stober. The Stovers from Bucks Co. Pennsylvania where I believe your Jacob was born (according to your dates) came from Stauffer.
There is also a Stauffer/Stover history and geneaological record written by a distant cousin of my husband's mother that had been given to her about 40 or 50 years ago. I am reading through this right now. The main source for the records here is a history written by a close descendant from the Myer/Stover family, Rev. AJ Fretz. Most of his relatives ended up in Ohio it seems as did my husband's family when several of the Stovers and Myers moved to Indiana and Ohio in the early to mid 1800's. Some may have returned "home" to Pa from time to time or to help a family member in need (grandparent? parent?) and that could explain why some of your ancestors ended up born in Pa. while others were born in Ohio or Indiana throughout the latter part of the 19th century. It's indeed an interesting story and history. I think that when all is said and done the Stovers who come from the Stauffers will not be the same blood line as the Stovers who come from the Stober line. DNA tests are pretty cheap and when there is a data bank with matches it's supposed to be simple and painless to find out for sure if you have the time and money to spare doing so. My husband and I are talking about the possibility of finding a "two for one" deal..no joke. I saw one recently advertised on one of the groupon or Social sites here in our area. Obviously this is big business nowadays. It's fun meeting all the disconnected cousins.
Hope your search is fruitful from here. I do believe this Jacob is the missing piece you've been searching for.
Please let me know if so..
that's rewarding for me to know.
I think it will be great news for my 80 something mother in law to hear also.
Stay Safe,
Karen

I think your Jacob is the brother of our Elizabeth, son of Jacob, son of Henry Stauffer.
The dates perfectly match.
Many of the descendents of both Stovers and Myers moved to
Indiana, Ohio and that part of the country from Pennsylvania
around the early 1800's. Is seems as territories to the west
opened up for homesteading these farmer's sons were taking advantage of a great opportunity to own their own land, especially since there were so many kids to fight over the family property. A pattern seems to be that the eldest sons received an inheritance and the youngest were moving west. Maybe that's where the expression "Go West young man" comes from? :)

Here is what I have that is recorded from history for JACOB STOVER (son of HENRY STAUFFER) from the Stauffer-Stover history by Rev. A J Fretz
Please forgive me if this is already a response but I am moving right along in my own research.
I am also recording everything I'm writing down for you for my mother in law, husband and children (and their children) one of whom is also named Jacob.
Jacob STOVER was one of 5 children born to Henry (1-20-1932 through 2-17-1802) and Barbara Stauffer. Henry Stauffer had married Barbara Hockman the day the left for America (from either Germany or Switzerland) They arrived in Philadelphia on Sept. 9, 1749. They had five children. The name was changed from Stauffer to Stover by the children in the following generation.
Ulrich, Barbara, Henry, Jacob and Ralph.
Our Jacob Stover was born on May 13th, 1757 in Pa. and died on April 28, 1844 in Bedminster (near or where he'd been born) HE married Elizabeth Swartz, who died in 1802. They had 7 children. Since Elizabeth is the only line followed from that generation I have no dates of birth for those children but strongly suggest you consider her BROTHER JACOB must be your man.
Since she was born in 1783 it seems logical to me that this Jake would definitely be the one who is your ancestor.
While the history book I'm looking at says "7" children from two women, Elizabeth and Catherine there are actually NINE children. Since Jacob Sr.'s first wife Elizabeth hadn't passed away until 1802 it's fair to "assume" that Jacob had been born close to the same time Elizabeth had since he is one of the first children named in the geneaology..though I must admit whoever wrote it leaves much to the reader's imagination otherwise.
The children named are Elizabeth, Henry, Mathias, Ann, Jacob, Abraham, Catherine, Jonas, Samuel and Issac.
that's not necessarily according to BIRTH ORDER there.
The emphasis was on ELIZABETH being the "mother" of Rachel KRATZ who married our MYERS ancestor, Michael, a close neighbor and part of the same Mennonite community.
In any case, my very good guess is that this is your JACOB STOVER connection since it is the very generation that had changed the family name from Stauffer to Stover there in Bedminister Pennsylvania.
For any of you involved in the DNA testing it would be interesting to me if you may discover any Jewish roots here. Swartz? Kratz? Elizabeth who married Jacob. Could this have been a reason he was "cut off" from the Mennonite family who'd settled here and become a first generation American in Penn's colony? just wondering about the irony of it all.
From here without further speculation here is a most interesting story about Jacob, SON OF HENRY, FATHER of JACOB and ELIZABETH. In the words of the historian.

At the breaking out of the Revolutionary War in 1775, the Colonial Army being pressed for teams and transportation equipment demanded of Henry Stauffer (Stover) Sr. his wagon and horses for the use of the army.
His son, (our JACOB) then merely a child, accompanied his father's team in the army, as a driver, under the command of General Sullivan. He hauled not only supplies but also at times the wounded soldiers.
Harsh treatment, the severity of his duties, and finally failure to return him and his father's team "home" as had been promised led the young man to escape. He was caught and placed under the command of General George Washington himself. He told Washington about his former treatment and that he'd received food not fit to eat. The general, George Washington, promoted him and from that time on young Jacob hauled only the general's personal effects. (paraphrased)
From this history I have nothing to offer you concerning your Jacob Stover/Stauffer ancestors. My guess is it would be hard to believe it isn't the same JACOB who fathered our Elizabeth who'd fathered YOUR Jacob. hope you enjoy the history lesson as much as we have!
Probably not. In a book I purchased from Nancy Lee Stover entitled The Stover Family: Staffort, Baden, Germany to Centre County, Pennsylvania, 2010, there are 21 Jacob Stovers indexed. And the author states that she did not track any Stover that left Centre Cty. My relative David Stover fought in the civil war, but once he left Centre Cty her book contains no follow up information. I will look into this as time permits. However, all of the Centre Cty Stover apparently came from Staffort Germany and their names were Stober.

Sorry I can't be more help. Good luck.

Linda-
My Jacob, Sr. was born abt 1786 (PA) and Jacob, Jr. b. 1814 (PA) d. 1883 (MO) appear to be much younger than yours. Is my Jacob, Sr. a part of your Jacob's family? I am not aware of any of my direct Stovers being in VA. They were both born in PA, moved to IN then MO. Jacob, Jr. died in Clark County, MO but I have not found where Jacob, Sr. died (it could have been CA).

David

Hello,

My great great grandfather Stover, William (I think it was his middle name)was born in Indiana in 1839 moved to Missouri married Clorisa Malvina Johnson in Scotland county Missouri 1861.

The family story goes that "Jacob" was disowned...I can not find "William" Stover and the Jacob connection. An elder Stover relative told me that the men mostly went by their middle name as was the custom. Additionally the family lore indicated that we were related to Daniel Boone.

I know Daniel Boone's fathers' sister was married to one Jacob Stover...

Could we be from the same Jacob Stover line?

William and Clorisa moved to Humbodlt County California during the Civil War.

T.
I show that Jacob Stover (Stauber), born in 1685, died in 1740 or 41 immigrated from Switzerland to Philadelphia. March 15, 1715 married Sarah Boone (aunt of Daniel Boone). Known children: Jacob and Abraham.

Jacob Stover, Jr born in 1717 in Oley, Pennsylvania aand is thought to have died in St. Peters Parish, South Carolina. Married Ruth (wife named in Orange County, Virginia, Deed Book 6, p. 281, October 1741). Some family traditions say that Ruth was Native American. Had a child Christopher Stover who married Catherine. Christopher owned lands on the Shenandoah River in 1801. Had a son Matthias Stover born June 29, 1783 in Rockingham County, VIrginia. Married Catherine Fisher and died August 11, 1847 in Illinois.

Here is what I have on the stover family. Didn't take me as long as I thought to find everything. One of the only files that I have complete on my computer. Let me know if you find any problems. My husband is a NELSON. They married into the stover line about a hundred years ago. I also have photos of county marriage indexes for three of the OLDER Stovers if you are interested. Let me know. :) Enjoy. Karla

Decendants of Nimrod Stover
First Generation

1. Nimrod STOVER was born circa 1803 in Virginia.

Nimrod STOVER and Nancy TEVERBAUGH were married on 21 Aug 1826 in Allegany County, MD.1 The marriage record lists Nancy's maiden name as Teverbaugh but it may have actually been Tevebaugh (without the "r") since that is the spelling found in the Hardy County, Virginia census records where Nimrod lived. Teverbaugh and Tevebaugh are found with about equal frequency in the overall U.S. census records.

Nancy TEVERBAUGH was born circa 1806. She died before 1850.

Nimrod STOVER and Nancy TEVERBAUGH had the following children:

2	i.	George STOVER was born circa 1829 in Virginia.
+3	ii. Total 241.

Jacob J. STOVER and Rebecca GOLDSBURY were married on 8 Jun 1856 in Barbour County, VA(WV).7–8 In the index of marriages, the groom's name appears to be Jacob J. Stever and the bride Rebecca Goldsburg. The marriage record itself, however, lists the groom as Jacob J. Stover, 21, born Hardy County, VA and the bride as Rebecca Goldsbury, 18, born Allegany County, MD. The groom's parents were identified as Nimrod and Nancy and the bride's as James and Margaret. The wedding was solemnized by Joel Pilman.

Rebecca GOLDSBURY, daughter of James GOLDSBURY and Margaret [UNKNOWN], was born in Jan 1840 in Allegany County, MD. She died after 1900 at the age of 60.

Jacob J. STOVER and Rebecca GOLDSBURY had the following children:

13	i.	William C. STOVER was born circa 1857 in VA (WV).
+14	ii.	Elizabeth Catherine STOVER, born Dec 1858, VA (WV); married Samuel Preston MILLER, 31 Mar 1881, Gilmer County, VA(WV).
+15	iii.	John Wesley STOVER, born Apr 1861, VA (WV); married Sarah Elizabeth BAKER, 1 Jan 1882, Gilmer County, WV; died 2 Mar 1934, York Township, Athens County, OH.

Family Notes:

In 1850, Jacob Stover, age 15, appears in his father's household (281/298) in Hardy County, VA. Rebecca Gouldsbury, age 12, appears in Barbour County, VA in the household of Abram and Delila Shockey (168/168). There was also a Christina Goldsberry, age 11, living in Barbour County in the household of Isaiah Sargent (17/17). It is possibly that Rebecca and Christina were sisters who lost their parents and were taken in by other families, perhaps relatives or friends. There is at least some circumstantial evidence of a connection between these girls. On their marriage records, the place of birth listed for both is Allegany County, MD. Further, Rebecca's parents are listed as James and Margaret and Christina's as John and Margaret. Although the father's names are listed differently, it is not unreasonable that one of these records is incorrect. Interestingly, Isaiah Sargent lived just a few doors from Methodist Minister Joel Pilman, who solemnized the marriage of not only Jacob Stover and Rebecca Goldsbury but also Jacob's sister Catherine and her husband Adam See.

1860 Census, (Glenville PO), Gilmer County, VA
Page 45 (30 June 1860)
Dwelling 313, Family 297
Stover, Jacob J., 25, Farmer, $50 personal property, Hardy County, VA
Rebecca, 22, Allegany County, MD
William C., 3, Barbour County, VA
Elizabeth, 2, ditto
Note: Next door is the household (312/296) of Jacob's father, Nimrod, which also contains sister Catherine with her husband and children.

Third Generation

6. She died of apoplexy on 1 Mar 1933 at the age of 70 in Lockney, Center District, Gilmer County, WV.12 The death certificate lists her as a housewife and identifies her husband as John N. Cain. Roswell MILLER was born circa 1857 in Gilmer County, VA(WV).

10. Rebecca A. SEE (Catherine Stover-2, Nimrod-1) was born circa 1866 in Gilmer County, VA(WV). Although I have her as Rebecca E., Rebecca's middle initial is not actually known at this point. The birth record lists her as Rebecca E., the 1870 census lists her as Rebecca H. and the 1880 census lists her as Rebecca A.

Rebecca A. SEE and C. M. MCCLUNG were married on 1 Sep 1907 in Gilmer County, VA(WV).19 The marriage record lists the groom as C. M. McClung, 37, widowed and the bride as Rebecca See, 41, single. The marriage was solemnized by M. B. Stump. C. M. MCCLUNG was born circa 1877.

14. Elizabeth Catherine STOVER (Jacob J.-2, Nimrod-1) was born in Dec 1858 in VA (WV).

Elizabeth Catherine STOVER and Samuel Preston MILLER were married on 31 Mar 1881 in Gilmer County, VA(WV).20 The marriage record lists the groom as Samuel P. Miller, age 21, born Gilmer County and the bride as Elizabeth C. Stover, age 22, born Gilmer County. The marriage was solemnized by J.M. Cain.

Samuel Preston MILLER was born on 19 May 1859 in VA (WV). The 1900 census lists his birthdate as May 1860 but his death certificate has it as 19 May 1859. I have chosen to use the latter here. He died of a coronary occlusion on 30 Jan 1943 at the age of 83 in Harrison County, WV. The death certificate lists his birthplace as Normantown, Gilmer county, WV but at the time of death, he was living at Route 1, Lost Creek, Harrison County, WV. He was listed as a widower with no wife named and his parents listed as unknown. The informant on this document was Ethel Clevenger, Route 1, Lost Creek, Harrison County, WV (perhaps his daughter Ethel). He was buried on 1 Feb 1943 at Meadows Cemetery, Normantown in Gilmer County, VA(WV).

Samuel Preston MILLER and Elizabeth Catherine STOVER had the following children:

24	i.	Vivian Ellen "Vivie" MILLER was born on 24 Sep 1883 in Tanner, Gilmer County, VA(WV).21–22 The birth record identifies the parents as Samuel Preston Miller and Elizabeth Cathryn Miller and the birth reported by Samuel Preston Miller, father. She died of abdominal carcinoma on 27 Sep 1965 at the age of 82 in Tanner, Gilmer County, VA(WV).22 The death record lists the deceased as Vivian Ellen Bennett, a widowed housewife and normal resident of DeKalb, WV. Her parents are identified as S. P. Miller and Elizabeth Stover. The informant on this document was Rugie McGee of Tanner, WV. {Is this sister Rughe?} She was buried at IOOF Cemetery in Richwood, WV.22
25	ii.	Ethel Ann MILLER was born on 20 Dec 1885 in Normantown, Gilmer County, VA(WV).23 The birth record lists the place of birth as Normantown and identifies the parents as Saumel Preston Miller and Elizabeth Stover Miller. The birth was reported by S.P. Miller, father.
26	iii.	Nora MILLER was born in Feb 1889 in Gilmer County, VA(WV). A birth record for a Nora Gay Miller, with parents listed as S.P. and Betty miller appears on page 113 C of the Gilmer County, WV birth records. The date listed on this record, however, is 28 June 1889 while the 1900 census lists Nora's birthdate as February 1889. Is this the same person with the date recorded incorrectly on one of these records?
27	iv.	Odna Lee MILLER was born on 15 Nov 1892 in Normantown, Gilmer County, VA(WV).24 The birth record lists the parents as Samuel Preston Miller and Elizabeth Stover Miller. The birth was reported by S.P. John Wesley STOVER (Jacob J.-2, Nimrod-1) was born in Apr 1861 in VA (WV). His birthdate calculated from his listed age at death is 5 June 1861 but the 1900 census lists it as April 1861. It is not currently known which of these is correct. He died on 2 Mar 1934 at the age of 72 in York Township, Athens County, OH. The death certificate identifies his pouse as Sarah Elizabeth Stover and his father as Isaac Stover. The mother was unknown.

John Wesley STOVER and Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" BAKER were married on 1 Jan 1882 in Gilmer County, WV.26

Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" BAKER, daughter of John BAKER and Mary Elizabeth SANDERS/SAUNDERS, was born on 9 Jun 1856 in Maryland.27 Her death certificate lists her birth date as 9 June 1857 and the place of birth as Maryland. The 1880 census has her place of birth as Maryland but indicates she was born circa 1855. The 1900 census, has June 1856 for her birthdate and West Virginia for her place of birth. It is not currently known which of these is correct but as a compromise, 9 June 1856 and Maryland are used here. She died on 1 Dec 1945 at the age of 89 in Waterloo Township, Athens County, OH.27 The death certificate identifies her husband as Wesley Stover and her parents as John Baker and Mary Sanders.

John Wesley STOVER and Sarah Elizabeth BAKER had the following children:

+30	i. The birth registry is a transcription of the original book so perhaps an error was made in copying, or perhaps the birth was not registered until well after the fact. Lonnie Delbert STOVER (John Wesley-3, Jacob J.-2, Nimrod-1) was born in Aug 1894 in Braxton County, WV. The 1900 census lists Lonnie's birth date as Aug 1895 but it is believed that he was actually born in 1894. He died on 21 Aug 1928 at the age of 34 in Waterloo Township, Athens County, OH.47 The death certificate identifies his spouse as Dora Stover and his parents as John W. Stover and Elizabeth Baker.

Lonnie Delbert STOVER and Dora Ethyl MURPHY were married on 2 Jan 1918 in Braxton County, WV.48 The marriage record lists the groom as age 24, born Braxton County, and the bride as age 18, born Braxton County. The license was obtained 1 Jan 1918 and the wedding solemnized on 2 Jan 1918 by J.J McCumbert{?}, minister of the gospel, at the home of Mr. Stover (Lonnie's father?).

Dora Ethyl MURPHY, daughter of James MURPHY and Melissa BUTLER, was born on 27 Sep 1899 in West Virginia.49 Her gravestone has her birthdate as 27 Sept 1900 but this cannot be correct since she appears in her parents' household in the 1900 census, which was taken on 9 June 1900. This census record lists her age as 8 months and her date of birth as Sept 1899 indicating she was actually born a year earlier than the date on her gravestone. On most records, Dora gives her place of birth as Braxton County, WV. This may be correct but the family appeared in neighboring Clay County in the 1900 census. I have yet to conclusively locate a birth record for Dora and most of her siblings in Braxton or the neighboring counties. There are several Murphy, and/or Murphey, families in this vicinity who use similar given names.
Hi My exhusband was Gerald Wayne Myers the youngest of the children. We were only married for 7 years. He was a drunk and like to beat on me when he was drunk so i didn't stay around long. I would like to see the picture of Mam and Popie that you have on your site. Can i get on it or is it restricked. His parent were wonderful people i don't know how some of the children turned out the way they did. He wasn't the only bad one in the bunch. I hadn't heard anything about then having the sight. It hasn't shown up in
any of my children. I have three children by him. If you will share you info with me i will give you my side.
picture or not. I knew Vicie when i was married to him but she didn't come around very often which you can't blame her. I looked in the census for him but could'd remember her husbands name so couldn't find her.
Thanks Lucille

Hi! Okey Myers was my great grandfather. My grandmother was Vicie, one of your husband's sisters. Which brother is your husband? I haven't seen any of the relatives from that side of the family since I was a child but I may remember him. I have also heard the story of the Indian, and I have a photo of Okey and Mary Myers on my family tree. I will add other photos to my tree as I get the relatives to lend them to me. You can most definitely see the indian blood in Mary, she had the high cheekbones and the most glorious black hair! In the photo she is in her late sixties and had not a single whie hair on her head! If you find anything else out about the Indian picture you're looking for please let me know, too. Oh, and the story in the family is that Mary had 'The Sight', i.e. psychic ability, which seems to run in the family... Thank you and good luck!

Cindy
