Thank you, that would explain why I cannot locate his death record around that time! Although, I still am uncertain as to what happened and why he would leave her with all those kids to only have them taken away by social services!

Many times back then, women mostly and men said they were widowed because there were looked upon as "bad" if they were divorced. So it was a lot easier to say widowed, than divorced.

Update: thank you all for your comments and info, I have since found that my great-grandfather was Carl Strand who was born July 1873 in Norway. He was married in 1895 to Suzanna (Susie/Suzie/etc...). Their children were born in South Dakota and Saskatchewan although they appear briefly on a census from North Dakota as well. He does not appear on the census of 1916 and she is listed as widowed. Not sure what happened as the history book for the town they resided in claims he abandoned her and their children (Sofie, Alma, Selma, Thelma and Archie) - anyone with info on these folks would be helping alot, as we really want to know what happened to him!

William James Strand - Rockford, IL

I am looking for info on William James Strand. He was born in Rockford, Illinois on March 17, 1926. His parents were James Strand and Catherine Folkerts Strand. He died June 15, 1970 in LA County-USC Medical Center. At the time of his death he was married to Piedad Alarcon, and lived in Monterey Park, Ca.
He was my husband's biological father, and also the biological father to a woman born approximately 1953 in Rockford, IL. He abandoned both of his 1st and 2nd wife when he learned of their pregnancy. His 3rd wife also had a child, Richard Strand, born 1963 in California. By this time his health was not the best so his 3rd wife most likely became his care taker. I am looking for the daughter and son, my husband's half sister and brother.

Strand/Peterson - Denmark

I am searching records of my grandmother Petra Joy Siemens (Strand). Her father is Melvin F Strand (I can't find birth or death!) and her mother is Grace Elsa Stilson (b aug 21, 1908 d march 6 2000) but from then on I am stuck. When I contacted the family it appears that when they immigrated from Norway they randomly picked the name Strand because there were so many Peterson/Pederson on the boat over. So now I am trying to find information on Melvin's father... Named Peter Lars Peterson (or Strand) and his mother Petrina..... haha It is very confusing with the name change and I hope someone will have some information. I am completely stuck!

Hi John,
How fantastic to hear from you! I guess you probably gave up hope of me ever replying. My ex-husband just emailed me to say that he came across your post on the message board. I remember you and your brothers very well. I remember once playing a game of pool and your brother Frank trounced me. I was so cross about that! I've lived in England since 1972. Michael - my ex who told me about your post - is English. I've lived here so long and my two kids grew up here, and now I have grandchildren. It would be great to hear from you. My home email address is: silverlake@silverlake.plus.com.

Love,
Jan

Hi Jan This is cousin Johnny How have you been? Iv"e been reading your posts for months and just didn:t reply due to lack of knoledge. Thank you I learned most of the stuff about the Bullman side from your posts. I came close to just giving up. I just signed up to the message boards & this is my second post. I know your posts go back quite a way. So I hope you get this. I was checking out the posts on genealogy.com & was checking out the old ones. I can"t find any new ones. Well I was reading Alices & tried to E-mail her but I guess it no longer exists (the E-Mail address I mean) I put up My first Family Tree (gedcom Site On kindredkonnections I got a month free because of all the material on the Bordens. I just last night Went back a few hundred more years to 1066 & the Battle of Hastings. I was just going over a post of your husbands Inquiring about anyone with ancestors in County Kent. Woww have I got some. I have been hitting every site I can & was on the Headcorn & Kent Library sites. I guess my first Borden Ancestors in England came over with William the Conquror and fought at Hastings or Battle should I say. Their names were De Bourdon back then. The way ancestors change their names when they come to a new country is sure confusing to a new researcher. It turns out Richard Borden born in Headcorn and moved to Cranbrook was one of the first settlers to go to Rhode Island. One of their bunch was Roger williams One of the earliest Quakers. I cant understand why they don't teach it (genealogy in school). I remember you coming to our house when we were kids. I thought you were so cute. I remember hearing that you went to the UK back when you got married back in the early 70"s. I had just got out of the Marine Corps. Anna & my Aunt Ginny on my mothers side both gave me folders with genealogical material. I have lost everything in my life so many times storagegarages & the like. Im staying with my son Joseph right now & using his laptop. He is now 30 & out at his girlfriends house in Tacoma. My daughter Melissa came over last week And I got to spend some time with her & my grandaughter Leanna, Her father is Mexican American & their Family Tree is proving dificult. Well Thanks again for your posts they sure are one of the best parts of genealogy. Loe your long lost cousin John.

Carl ... he spelled it Karl, I believe his middle initial initial was A ... He came to the USA from Oslo, Norway abt 1905, to relatives in San Antonio, NM, the Hiltons who owned a hotel there. He went to school at the NM School of Mines in Socorro, NM, for geology, I think. He then moved to Silver City, NM where he had a family. Boys ... Richard, Donald, and John ... I am pretty sure of the names, but not positive. I met Richard and correcponded with, John who lived in Tucson, AZ at the time (I think it was John). Seems Lars and Karl had a falling out and didn't speek for most of their life. That is how the connection was dropped.
I am looking for any relatives either Lars Emil or Karl A Strand, please pass this on.

The Anna you are looking for MAY POTENTIALLY be my great aunt. There are enough similarities between her family information and my own that a connection seems likely.

My grandfather was Bo Lennart Strand (Americanized to Robert Lennart Strand) he had two siblings (Annie Elisabeth) and Royal. Bo and Annie were both born in Sweden. Their parents were Bror Algot (Americanized to Albert) and Anna Johansson. Bror (born 1891) came to Connecticut from Sweden with his brother, Barney.

I wonder if the Anna you are looking for is a sister or cousin to Bror/Albert and Barney??????

It would make sense to me that Albert and his wife would name their first born son after his father (Leonard????....

First, I am not related and I do not research Strand, I only came across your asking for him and thaught it would be interesting to find him.

I can see on Ellis Island that his brother Frans Robert Torsten went to his brother J A Strand in Chicago 1903.
J A Strand then lived on n 1088, Sheffield Ave, Chicago.
Johan Alfreds sister Beda Johanna went to US 1905 and visited her sister W. Rydström, 147 E 34 St New York.
I do not know if these sister could be Frida Wiktoria and I either know if Beda stayed in US or went back.

Frans Robert Torsten died 02/14/1954 in Överluleå, he was married 04/30/1938, so he seems to went back to Sweden.

I'm sure it's the right family.
Are you researching the Strand family or did you run into this during some other search?
Now I'm wondering if any of his siblings came to the states and if I might have relatives. If so, I would love to be in contact with them.
You really made my day with this information.
