Y-DNA Results for Jesse Strang, Loyalist of Bedeque, PEI

Results of a recent Y-DNA test done on a patrilineal descendant of Jesse Strang has confirmed a previous test results and proved that Jesse Strang is not a patrilineal descendant of the Strang family of Westchester County, New York. Although we may never know, the Y-DNA results indicates that a member of the Tompkins family of Westchester County, New York is likely Jesse’s father. I also strongly believe that Jesse’s mother was Mary Strang, daughter of Daniel Strang and Elizabeth Galpin and brother of Daniel Strang the recruiter, who later married Jacob Silliker.

More details on the Y-DNA test results, our analysis and conclusions can be found at http://ourmaritimeties.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Jes....

I look forward to any questions or comments concerning these new findings.

Arthur
Bernard De Streng?

I have seen a few trees that contain a Bernard De Streng as the father of Jean/Jehan De Streng (1598-1624) of Orleans, France. I feel like I came across a record that identified Jean's father as Bernard, but I cannot locate it again. Does anyone know the reference for this person or have confirmation of him? The dates I have seen given were 1560-1610.

Is Jesse Strang, the PEI Loyalist, the son of Daniel Strang, the spy/recruiter?! -DNA can help answer this question

This question has been asked and speculated about for years. In his "The Strangs of Westchester" articles (ca 1967), Charles A Strange said "... Daniel is believed by Strangs living on Prince Edward Island, Canada, to have been the father of: Jesse b. abt 1763.". My own thoughts in 2002 (http://genforum.genealogy.com/strang/messages/392.html) was that Daniel is the most likely father, but this is not proven.

Well it is now 2011 and we have not progressed further on this question, but technology has. A simple Y-DNA tests done by one or more male line descendants of Jesse Strang would show, with reasonable probability, whether Jesse Strang was a descendant of the Strang family of Westchester Co, NY, although not who his father was. On the Strong(e)/Strang(e)/Lestrange DNA Project (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegalstr...) at least two descendants of Daniel Streing b. 1671, including one of Daniel Strang b. 1715 (presumed grandfather of Jesse), have had their DNA tested to which we could compare the results of Jesse's descendant.

SO, is there a male line descendant of Jesse Strang willing to have a Y-DNA test done (very simple process) and are there other descendants willing to help defray the cost (ca $125 per test)?

If you are willing to help, please reply "off-list" to me at arthur.owen@rogers.com.

TIA Arthur Owen

David William Strang, 50,Pittsburgh, the son of Donald William Strang and Connie Elder Strang

David W. Strang
David William Strang, 50, of McMurray, died suddenly and unexpectedly at his friend's hunting camp in Geneva, Pa., Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011. He was born May 17, 1960, in Pittsburgh, the son of Donald William Strang and Connie Elder Strang who survive. He attended the Baldwin-Whitehall School District and made many lifelong friends there. A 1978 graduate of Baldwin High School, David was an outstanding athlete who lettered in wrestling and football. David played football while a student at Grove City College and was a member of the Epsilon Pi fraternity. While at college he became known as the "King of Games" due to his great love of card games, at which he excelled. He graduated from Grove City in 1982 and maintained friendship with his fellow students and brothers for the rest of his life. David had a great love of the outdoors and spent as much time as possible hunting and fishing throughout the state and the country. He was a founding member of the Cross Creek Bird Dog Association and was always happy to bring guests on hunting trips with him. He always had his faithful Labrador retriever at his side while hunting pheasants and waterfowl. His best friends were his son, Douglas, and his father. The three spent many, many hours fishing and hunting and enjoying each other's company. David worked as an account executive for the same company for 27 years. When he started working in sales in 1983, the company was named MCC Powers. As the company's workforce sustained long-lasting success, it grew and was purchased by larger companies, until finally it was purchased by Siemens Corporation. Through the years and while the company changed names, David remained a solid sales producer who was loved by his colleagues and his clients as well. Everyone who met him liked him. His family was the center of his life, and nothing made him happier than watching his children grow. In 1984, he met Marilyn Hughes of Dormont and married her in 1989. They had two children who were the light of his life: Douglas and Bonnie, both at home. He passed his love of the outdoors and card games on to his children, and his happiest hours were spent with them. In addition to his wife, children and parents, he is survived by a sister, Linda (Terry) Bove, of Bethel Park; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements by BEINHAUERS, 724-941-3211. Friends welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at 2828 Washington Road, McMurray, 15317. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Entombment in Woodruff Memorial Park. Please add or view tributes at www.beinhauer.com.
Pennsylvania - Pittsburgh .

Hi Judy,
Yes, we are related but it's a "stretch" - my gg-grandfather, Jacob Strang, m. to Lydia Rix, was a brother of Nathaniel who m. Elizabeth Schurman. Elizabeth died young and the the children were parceled out among relatives and Nathaniel went to MA where he remarried. Some of the children, including Jared, ended up in CA. I have material on the MA and PEI side of the family if you're interested. All I have on Jared is a brief biography stating he joined his father, Nathaniel, in CA in 1858. There is some question as to whether this Nathaniel was his father or his brother, Nathaniel Nelson Strang. Do you have any information on Jared's early life in CA?
Gail

Hi Patti,
You probably went to Ventura because that is where my grandparents lived. I actually have a couple of pictures that I believe are of your parents visiting us when I was a baby. There are no other children in the pictures, so I don't know if you were there or not. I am 58 now and I was probably around 2 when the pictures were taken.
Grandma Doc (Julia Hussey Strang), your Dad's grandmother is also in one of the pictures. We called her Grandma Doc, because she was a chiropractor. She was divorced from Steven. My email address is: RVRoxanne@aol.com if you would like to contact me.
Judy

Stephen Strang was my great-grandfather through my grandmother Maude Strang Blasdell and my mother Ellen Blasdell Blair. My name is Judith Blair Barrett.
I think I have a couple of pictures of Donald Urban Strang from when he came to visit us when I was a baby.
My mother is still alive...she is 96.
Judy

Klara Strang - Arrival on the Ship Pennyslvania from Hamburg 1912

I am the granddaughter of David Strang who arrived with, I believe, his sister Klara Strang on the ship Pennsylvania from Hamburg, Germany. They were both born in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. They arrived in NYC in November 1912. David Strang returned to Europe, had 4 daughters (one was my Mother) and was eventually murdered at Auschwitz. However, we believe Klara remained in NYC. On the records taken from Ellis Island, where she was processed back into the USA, she was met by a man named (appears to be) Frank Kohn of NYC, possibly living on the Lower East Side. She was single at the time. I am looking for anyone who believes they are a descendent of (or has knowledge of) Klara Strang, Jewish, born in what used to be, Lemberg, Austria circa 1889. Thank you.
I believe there is a connection. My gr-grandfather was Francis Horace Strang, son of Francis G of Winfield, MI. I have not seen any reliable evidence, but some people have connected Frances G to John Chapman Strang of Newfield, NY. However, our family tradition has suggested that we're Scot/Pennsylvania Dutch--not French as in the Westchester Strangs.

While doing some research on Emma L. (Coleman) Strang I discovered she had listed her parents on her Marriage Registration Form to Cyrus Strang as: James B. Coleman and Jane Graves. The parents listed on Emma's Death Certificate are listed as James B. Coleman and Jane McAdam. Emma lived to be 93 yrs, was from Saint John and listed as a spinster, age 54, when she married Cyrus. As for the Nancy Stewart in my family tree, she was a sister to my g-grandfather and her parents were James Stewart Mary Ann Jellison, both from Nelson Parish, Northumberland County, NB.

'Your'Emma Coleman Strang sounds like she could be the same as 'mine'. What I have is, briefly:
1) My g-g-gr'parents were Robert Warren Coleman and Sabra (Stewart) Coleman. They had 13 children between ca. 1851-78. None of them were named Emma, and clearly James could not have been one of them either
2) One of their gr.dtrs, Sabra Jackson, my gr. aunt, was born in Pokiok, NB in 1886. I hve her affidavit for a birth not previously recorded. In it, Emma (Coleman) Strang states she is cousin to the child. Of course, cousin does not automatically mean simple first cousin. Perhaps Robert and James were siblings, or cousins as well. All I know about Robert is that he was born in Grand Bay, Kings Co. ca. 1824 to John Coleman, b. Ireland, and mother unknown, any siblings unknown. Scuttlebut is that the Colemans were a large and somewhat rowdy family.
Perhaps Cyrus Strang and Edgar Strang were related? Also I noted in the 1900 US census for Edgar and Emma that Emma's mother was born in Canada. It just struck me as possibly more than coincidence that one of their dtrs. was named Gladys, and that the known (to me, anyway) Coleman line also included a Gladys Jackson and Gladys Coleman.
I also noticed in one of your family trees a Nancy Stewart. Possibly connected to Sabra? She was b. St. John ca. 1831 to Henry Stewart and mother unknown- possibly (and only just possibly) Sabrianne Bairdain.

Would Emma have been the same as Emma (Coleman) Strang from New Brunswick, whose grandparents were Robert Warren Coleman and Sabra (Stewart) Coleman? Two of her cousins were Gladys Coleman (b. 1899) and Gladys Jackson (1895-1974).
