This William Lee Stratford stated on his marriage certificate that his father was WS Stratford, Captain Royal Navy. his occupation was accountant. He married in Western Australia and I suspect he was actually a convict who used the alias William Lee.

Thanks for this. Our Stratford Stephens was born about 1799. We do not know anything about his parents but assuming he was not adopted etc his father would have been a Stephens perhaps born about 1765. His mother might have been a Miss Stratford hence his Stratford forename. There was a suggestion (no more than that) that he might have come from Fermanagh.

I have found the following in the collection “Ireland Marriages, 1619-1898” in familysearch.org:

Groom's Name: Robert Stratford
Bride's Name: Frances Stephens
Marriage Date: 15 May 1828
Marriage Place: Clones, Monaghan, Ireland

I don’t know who either of these people were, but it shows a connection between a Stratford family and a Stephens family.

Incidentally, according to the Wikipedia article "Clones", the town's name is not pronounced like the common noun "clones". The pronunciation has two syllables: KLOH-nis.

I forgot that when experimenting, I had found an Edmund Stratford in the parish of St. Philip and St. Jacob, Gloucestershire in 1841. He was also listed as a butcher. This is most likely the Edmund Stratford who died in 1850. This would APPEAR to make Jane S. Stratford and Elizabeth White sisters.

I just noticed from my notes that there is a baby book for me that lists Jane Elizabeth White's father as Charles White. I see a marriage for an Elizabeth Sarah Stratford to Charles White where his father is also Charles White and her father is Edmund Stratford. That marriage took place in 1837. But there are SO MANY Whites. And where would he have been in 1841? At sea?

I had wondered if she had been married at all but the later censuses list her as a widow. And then I saw my note.

I realise that their status isn't clear perhaps she was just lodging there.BUT something I hadn't noticed is,if you look at the other person living there, it's a William Wight??? ( could be be spelt incorrectly)age 45 -is this Elizabeth's husband. His occupation could be mason?. There is a death registered at Bedminster in Sept. quarter 1849 for a William Henry White.
Perhaps you need Jane Cherry's birth certificate to confirm her father.
This would mean that Elizabeth is a widow in 1851 and Jane is legitemate.

Thank you. Yes, that is the information I also had found in census data and other records online. I didn't get the "defect in spine" part. But I did catch that Fredrick Cherry had a cough. I've also found Fredrick with his parents. His father was a "dissenting" minister, most likely a Baptist. I was wondering if anyone knew any more than I had found.

I also don't see what happened to Elizabeth White, mother of Jane Elizabeth White. White seems to be a VERY common name.

Sandy Sheldon Gianni
Buffalo/Niagara Falls, NY, USA

I have been checking my Stratford records and have found the following.
1841 census: Living in Somerset St. Bedminster, Bristol were Jane Stratford age 35+ - butcher and Elizabeth White age 30+ an ironer. Both born in county ( Somerset)and both single. Were they just friends?

1851 census: Living at 14 Guinea St, St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol were Elizabeth S White age 41 a "widow" and Jane E White age 5 -both born Bristol.
There is a birth registration in 1845 (Sept Quarter)at Bedminster for Jane Elizabeth White.
Jane S Stratford is living at 3 King Court, St Thomas, Bristol working as a governess? -unmarried - age 45. This was transcribed as "Stutford"

1861 census: Living at 43 Harford St,Redcliffe, Bristol
Jane Stratford, head of household- unmarried age 36 (I think this age in incorrect) a seamstress -born Bristol.
With her are Elizabeth S White age 31 ( this age is also incorrect?) "widow" -and her daughter Jane E White age 15. Both born in Bristol, and both seamstresses.
In the 1861 census-Frederick Cherry is a boarder at 29 Thrissel St, West Side, Bristol age 16 born Abingdon, Warwickshire(this is possibly incorrect)working as packer and porter.

1871 census: Living at 7a Percy St, Bedminster, Bristol
Frederick E Cherry age 27 -stationer's warehouseman - born West Haddon? with Jane E , his wife age 25 born Bristol-a former dressmaker.
On the census there are comments stating Frederick had a "cough", and Jane had "a defect in spine".
Jane S Stratford is also living with them, unmarried age 66 a former butcheress born Bristol,Gloucestershire. It also states she was "deaf -15 years old".

Frederick Ebenezer Cherry's death registered at Bedminster in March quarter 1872 age 28,(perhaps his "cough" was T.B. and caused his death)
Elizabeth White's death was registered in 1873, June Quarter at Bedminster.

Jane Stratford's death was registered at Bedminster in December Quarter 1872 age 67

Hope this helps but I cannot find any connection between Elizabeth White and Jane Stratford (yet)
Judi

I've been tracing my great grandmother, Jane Elizabeth White back to England. She arrived in the USA November 2, 1872 as Jane Elizabeth Cherry. I see her in a number of censuses with her mother Elizabeth White and a woman named Jane Stratford who is listed as a butcher. Elizabeth is listed as a seamstress as is her daughter. In the 1871 census Frederick Cherry is also with them in Bedminster, Gloucestershire, Somerset. It looks like both Frederick and Jane Stratford died in 1872, the year Jane White Cherry emmigrated. I have been assuming that Jane Stratford was the sister of Elizabeth White but have no way to check that out. My father's family had always said that Jane Elizabeth White was Welsh but the family Bible says that she was born July 18, 1845 in Bristol Somersetshire, England. When she remarried here in the US, she is listed as "Jennie Cherry."

Sandy (Sheldon) Gianni

Although I have been a member of Ancestry for some time I have only just seen this!I have been in contact with Kim some year's ago. I also visited the Manor House in Farmcote with Gerald, and others us who are also descendants. Gerald and I share a common ancestor in William Stratford who married Mary Acock in 1795 making Gerald and myself 4th cousins. He and his late brother Len did much of the early research together.Unfortunately in the past few years Gerald has become quite infirm and can no longer continue with his history and is no longer on the Internet.A group of us have taken over his Archives and are working on a database that we are hoping to be able to share with like-minded people interested in the Stratford family. We hope to get this "up and running" fairly shortly. With Regards Sandra.

I'm just starting to work on this line of my family tree. The farthest back I have solid info on is Thomas Stratford born in 1873 in Chinnor, Oxfordshire. He died at sea on September 22, 1914. His father was William John Stratford and his mother was Caroline Robinson. No other confirmed info found. He would have been my Great-Great Grandfather.

I would love any further information anyone has about this branch.

Thanks!

Hi

My wife is a Stratford. Her side of the family emigrated to North America in the early 1830s, finally settling in Ontario, Canada. The family believes that they are related in some way to John de Stratford, Archbishop of Canterbury and my wife has a signet ring which is supposed to represent his coat of arms. As a Roman Catholic, Archbishop John should not have had any children but history shows that celibacy was not always adhered to.

The earliest ancestor of whom we are sure is John Stratford of Penn, Buckinghamshire (c1719-89).

If you have any information which might shed some light on a possible connection, I would really appreciate it.

Best regards

Jan Laury

Searching surname: stephens and forename: Stratford yields one record in each of the 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

To get the full info you have to click on “Stephens” after you get the record and then click again on “Household Return (Form A)” which gets you to the original.

The person retrieved is Robert Stratford Stephens, where Stratford is the middle name.

In 1901 he is a medical student, living in Carrickfergus in the household of his father Robert Stephens.

In 1911 he is a general practitioner and head of the household, living in Dublin.

Is this person connected to your Stratford Stephens?

I don’t know of any connection of my Stratford relatives to a Stephens family, but that certainly doesn’t prove that there wasn’t one.
Hello I have been reading the Stratford message board and thought that you would like to hear my story. In the late 1970s Len Stratford got in touch with my Uncle with our family tree. I think that he must be the brother of the Gerald who is mentioned in the message boards. I have looked after the family tree information sent to us by Len all these years and am now trying to check and verify it. I would very much like to get back in touch with him. Can anyone help me?

HI Mea, I have had a look on my tree can't find Sarah. I have had quite a bit of help from other Stratfords who inform me that all the Stratfords from these areas were related. I have also noticed that your surname is Messenger. I have some Messengers on my tree. I have John Stratford B 1804 in Stokenchurch married to Elizabeth Parker of Stokenchurch. She must have died because he then married Ann Messenger B1826 in Stokenchurch. Let me know if any of the information is useful to you.
Best Wishes
Mary

Hello again Peter,
Gerald sent me two photos of the manor but I was not aware of an 18th century addition. It is a beautiful place!
Once when looking through "The Times" newpaper online, trying to find information on Farmcote Manor, I actually found it listed for sale I believe in the early 1920's. There was a photo of it. I was out of printer ink and sadly was not able to print the picture. Then when I went back later to find the same picture, I could not find it again! I hate when that happens! I remember the ad mentioning the Stratford family and how their coat of arms was on the building.
I am Ontario but my ancestors set sail from England in 1906 and landed in Quebec where they settled.
I have never met Gerald in person but from his e-mails he has quite a sense of humour!
Kim
Kim,

You are very welcome. We have been here for 15 years and still getting unpacked. We have seen Gerald from time to time - he certainly is a character!

Our goal is to try to work out what the house looked like before large parts of it fell into disrepair. According to Gerald this happened in 1734. We asked Gerald if he had come across any images but sadly he has not. I was hoping that some of the tithe maps might at least have an outline of its "footprint". We are going to spend some time in the Gloucester records office which apart from the many deeds and other documents has a good selection of historical books on the area.

As you are probably aware the current house has a 19th century addition. We think this was added in 1844 but again we do not have definitive evidence of this.

Are you in west or eastern Canada?

Regards,

Peter Udale

Hello Peter,
Nice to hear from you. Gerald had said you were the present owner of the Manor. Wonderful, and with so much history behind it!
I have not spoken to Gerald in a few years but most of my information comes from him except for my branch of the Stratford tree, which we both collaborated on as he did not even know of it's existence, that was in October of 2003.
I am in Canada, Gerald has said I am the only Canadian connection to the Stratfords as far as he knows.
I don't know when you purchased the Manor but I did come across a newspaper article in "The Times" regarding Great Farmcote Manor being for sale in 1974 and it was listed for 72,500 pounds and it was for sale with Bernard Thorpe and Partners of Winchcombe. It stated that Thomas Cromwell was reputed to have stayed there.
Kim
[The following refers to the same Stratfords as in the earlier messages from VGLEPPING1 or gin--just a few more details, some of them recently discovered]

Robert STRATFORD (my grandfather Hugh ELLIOTT's half brother) emigrated to Beatrice,
Nebraska, from County Cavan, Ireland, with wife Jane BERTRAM and children Robert Henry, Mary Ann,
Thomas Frederick; also a child Joseph who died shortly after arriving in the United
States.

Robert Henry married Edna MILLER. They had children Robert Vinton and Richard
Gilmore.

Mary Ann married Seth W. JOHNSON. The 1920 census gives her children's names as Harry L., Carla M. and
the unlikely Gelmire L. An obituary for Seth gives the youngest child's name as Velmer.

Thomas Frederick (known as Fred) married Lucy REEDY. They had children Thelma,
Coral, and Kathleen. A California death record indicates that Thelma had the married name
McWHORTER.

Hello Paul,
Nice to hear from another descendant! I also descend from Walter Overbury Stratford and also from his son George. This George had John Eccleston Stratford who is a brother to Thomas. Is your Thomas called Thomas Overbury Stratford? Was he apprenticed to Matthew Boulton of Soho, Birmingham? I see his son William, and then William has George who married Sarah Dungworth, is this your tree?
Have you been in contact with Gerald Stratford who is the Heraldic Head of the Stratford family in England? Most of my information comes from him. All of his information has gone to the College of Arms in London.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Kim

Hi there. I am also descended from the Stratfords of Gloucestershire - I have also got information on them dating back to the 1300s and our Arch Bishop of Canterbury. However, my info is only from secondary data - I would be interested to know if you have viewed any of the info first hand? A lot of the info is contradictory and I'm desparately trying to clarify it! I would of course be happy to share with you the info I have - much of which is on the Sheffield branch of the family.

Hello there - I've just spotted your message about the Stratfords. I am descended from the Stratfords of Farmcote - via Walter Overbury Stratford, his son George, his son Thomas, his son William and his son George - who brought the family to Sheffield. Just let me know if you'd like me to share the info I have on them - I do have quite a lot, although if you've got them back to the 1300s you've probably got as much, if not more, than me. I've got them back to John Stratford who was Arch Bishop of Canterbury - although only via secondary sources. Not had time to visit Gloucestershire Archives yet!

F Stratford Butcher's of Evesham Worcs.uk

We are trying to find out anything about F.STRATFORD who owned a butchers shop at the bottom of Bridge street Evesham around 1920-1930. This shop is now the Heart Foundation Charity Shop,my grandfather worked there as a master butcher, but that is all we know, any information or photographs would be most exciting to see.
Thank you.

Looking for Info on Anna M. Stratford Wagner. Buried in Millbury, MA in Central Cemetery. All it says was that she died in 1920. Wondering if she is connected to the Stratford/Arbour Line from Waters St, Millbury, MA
