Hi.
I know this is an old post, but I'm trying to fill in the blanks of my father's life.
My dad, Donald Stratton passed away Jan. 13, 2012
I know his mother was named Hazel, and his father was Clifton. Don't have much more than that.
If you are still following this thread, let me know and I'll spill some more.
Regards... Rick Stratton

Thank you, Virginia, I'll check out GenealogyBank.com - this is the first I have heard of it. Yes, Ancestry's are frustrating, to say the least.
And perhaps the William Stratton you have mentioned is not "ours" after all. Ours entered CNG in 1876, was made Paymaster as a 1st Lt. in 1883, Captain in 1883 and resigned in 1888. Moved to RI. Reinstated upon returning to CT in 1895 and retired in 1898. Until his death in 1903 he retained the title of Captain and was given a military escort for his burial in Hartford, CT. Regards, Elaine

Of course, it was through the newspapers available at GenealogyBank.com It is a subscription service, but I find it invaluable because I can narrow it down to States, and even cities - whereas Ancestry.com's newspapers are a mess.

By the way, I do believe it was the same William H. Stratton who marrried, and lost, his young wife within nine months, as the other mentions of William ...the paymaster.

Best, Virginia Mylius

Thank you, Virginia, for your research on my behalf. I know the 3/2/1883 and the 11/16/1883 were not my relatives. But the 8/20/1883, the 9/11/83 and the 9/16/87 may well have been my great uncle William as he was a member of the CT National Guard.
I am especially intrigued by the reference to James' death on 4/15/1889. James' wife died in New Haven in 1871 and I have found no further record of him. There were other men of that name so I will have to investigate further,
Again, thanks.
E.
Good luck with your research, as well! Your reply sparked my interest, and tried to find something on your James, in case an obituary might have stated where he was born. No such luck. Just found these few things on William H. Stratton. Well, once again, good luck.

March 2, 1883, New Haven Register: Lieutenant WILLIAM H. STRATTON, paymaster of the Second Regiment was married in Burlington, Iowa, Tuesday morning, to Miss ANNA THOMPSON, daughter of a druggist in that city. Mrs. Stratton resided in New Haven some time ago, and was soprano signer in the Church of the Redeemer and in the Calvary Baptist Church.

November 16, 1883, New Haven Register: DIED, in this city, Nov. 15, of typhoid fever ANNA R. THOMPSON, wife of WILLIAM H. STRATTON, aged 24 years, 2 months, and 28 days. The funeral will take place from her late residence, No 17 Lincoln Street, tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. ---[Also] Mrs. William H. Stratton, who died yesterday afternoon at her residence, 18 Lincoln Street, was at one time a prominent member of the Emma Abbott opera company. She studied music in this city, and sang in the Calvary Baptist Church. Her marriage to Captain Stratton, of Gen. Smith’s staff, took place only nine months ago at her home in Burlington, Iowa. The remains will be taken to Iowa for interment.

August 20, 1883, New Haven Register: Lieutenant WILLIAM H. STRATTON, pay-master of the Second Regiment, has been appointed aide-de-camp on the brigade staff, C.N.G., with rank of Captain, vice McNeill resigned.

Sept. 11, 1883, New Haven Register: MR. STRATTON DEFEATED: The Case of George Botsford, the Crown Street livery stable keep, against ex-Paymaster STRATTO, for damaged sustained by a horse which the latter had hired, was decided today, by Justice of the Peace George A. Tyler, in favor of the plaintiff, to whom he awarded $75 in damages and costs, amounting to $10 or $12.

September 16, 1887, New Haven Register: CAPT. STRATTON’S RESIGNATION: It was stated authoritatively today that Capt. W. H. STRATTON, formerly of this city, aide on Brig. Gen. Graham’s staff, has resigned that position and will sever his connection with the Connecticut National Guard. Capt. Stratton was a member of Company F, 2nd regiment, before he was appointed as aide by Gen. Smith when he commanded the brigade. He was retained by Gen. Graham. Capt. Stratton resigned before the brigade went into Camp Lounsbury, but for some reason withdrew it. As he is a very enthusiastic man in his position there is considerable curiosity among military men to know what trouble, if any has arisen, among the brigade staff that has led to this action, but no one seems able to tell. An officer of the C.N.G., who wears a star on his shoulder straps, said today that he that he expected Gen. Graham would soon resign, and that he did not believe that he would go to camp again.

April 15, 1889, New Haven Register: STRATTON-DIED, in this city, April 14th, JAMES HARVEY STRATTON, aged 63 years. Funeral Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock from No. 7 Salem St.

September 13, 1899, New Haven Register: The officers of the First Regiment, C.N.G., met in the First Regiment Armory, at Hatford (sic), last night to consider the question of the regiment taking part in the Dewey celebration in New York. ---Capt. W.H. STRATTON, who is an aide on General Rue’s staff, came up from New York to address the meeting. He told of the arrangements that had been made in New York.
Hello, although I am a Stratton descendent I, unfortunately, have no knowledge of the area of my English ancestor's origins. I must first connect with his parents or siblings to begin a trace. All I know is James Stratton emigrated from England to America sometime in the early half of the 1800's (first seen in records of New Haven, CT in 1853 at age 27, he m. Abigail DeMartin and had 2 sons - William Henry 1854 and Albert Edward 1862).
Good luck with your search.

Stratton's of Bremhill, Baynton's of Bremhill

We know that Edward Stratton was the son of Francis Stratton b. ca 1600 England and his wife, Joane “ Button” born 30 May 1600 in Bremhill, Wiltshire, England. * Note: I often see this birth date for “Joane” but have never seen the proof? The time line would make this appropriate, however.

If Joane was from Bremhill, it makes sense that Edward’s Stratton family might have been there, as well. And of course there were Stratton’s there: "WILLIAM STRATTTON of London, eldest son of _____ Stratton of “Bremble” [Bremhill] in Wilts, married Christian, daughter of Thomas Fitzsall of the Devizes."

I am curious if anyone has been known to research the Baynton’s with an eye to the same possibly being ancestor to Joan “BUTTON” of Bremhill, Wiltshire. There are a couple of examples of the Baynton’s being linked to the STRATTON’s (or STROTTON’s). In other words, is it possible Joan Button was actually Joan Baynton?

Notes and Queries: "STRATTON of BREMBLE, in Wiltshire, who came out of Norfolk, with the undermentioned coat of arms: Argent on a cross asure five bezants. Such is the entry in Harl MSS, British Museum, No 1166, fol. 89. Will any genealogist favour me with the connecting link between the Stratton of Norfolk and the Stratton of Bremble (Bremhill)in Wiltshire - of which last family pedigrees are entered in Harl. MSS, No. 1165, fol. 99b, and No. 1443, fol. 200b."

BREMHILL: Sir Edward Bayntun (sic), of course, is often in the records. There is also reference to EDWARD STRATTON, Gent., relative to Bremhill. There were other Baynton males, including a Francis (I have seen others state that Joan Button's father was named Francis? Again, no proof given, that I have seen).

Any thoughts appreciated. Virginia Mylius
In memory of Raymond Stratton III who passed on September 22, 2011. I believe the George listed below may be his George W. Lentz about whom he wrote to me some years ago. He mentioned that George was his g.g.grandfather.

Widow Lurana Scurlock Tune left Halifax, Virginia for Bedford County, Tennessee after the settlement of her husband William Tune's estate.
Karen,

I am searching for the parents of my Pursia Stratton who married John Mann in Pawlet Vermont in 1797. She was born in Vermont in 1767. I think she may be related to the other Strattons in Pawlet, but not sure how. I think she could be a sister or cousin to the Samuel and Israel Stratton of Vermont. I see that Samuel is said to have had a sister Lucy, b. 1767.

Any help appreciated.

Diana M. I am looking at this Stratton line because of a son Seth b. to Sarah Stratton b. 1745 who later or ? marr. Conrad Devoe 10-23-1765 and had 14 children. I am researching Conrad to find his parents. Too much gray area, am looking for better data. Can you help? Duane

You will have to join to get a copy. I think they still offer monthly subscriptions. But it would be worth it, as I think many of relatives from that family were on there. I posted many of them. I have little information on him, other than his marriage and death.

If anybody else is trying to find information on him, I would be interested to share what I do have.

Thanks,
Sarah

Marion, I have very little information about siblings for Thomas Stratton. The only one I have listed is a John Stratton who was buried in Allegan County, Michigan. I don't even have a year for the burial. This information was from the notes of a long-time researcher in Allegan County.

I do have names of parents listed for Thomas:
Ichabod Stratton and Lucy Tooley -- but I don't have much information about them beyond the names.

Thomas Stratton married the sister of one of my ancestors, and that is why I have done less research on him.
