I am trying to locate information on my great-grandfather George F. Straw and his father Allison G. Straw of Van Wert, Ohio. My grandfather was Alvin Straw, he had two siblings Clarence and Mildred, they both died in childhood. We were always told the famlies original name was Stroh but I'm not sure. Any info would be helpful!

I've recently been working with a woman in Weare, NH who owns a home on Sugar Hill that is almost certainly the home Jacob Straw built in the mid 1700's. Jacob was a carpenter and joiner and did all the work himself. Jacob is a 1st cousin of mine 7X back.
Just looking for descendants. The line goes: Jacob Straw ca. 1733-1807, Samuel 1761-1844, Daniel 1792-1849, Daniel Felch Straw 1823-1896, Dr. Amos Gale Straw 1864-1926. Children Enid Constance (birth record says Enid Merle), Zetae Gale, David Gale and Wayne C. One of the census records has one of the boys listed as adopted.
It is not common to find a house not only first owned by an ancestor but actually built by him. This is an FYI for descendants interested. Attached is Enid's birth certificate and a photo of the Weare home.
Tom Walden: twalden27@gmail.com

Re: Straw/Strow

Reuben Straw Sr is a probable son of Jonathan Straw Sr [s/o William and Susan (Colby) Straw] based on the following:
... the 18th of August, 1841, Jonathan [Jr] who m. Hepzibath Bartlett, made and executed his last will, of that date, which has been duly proved and allowed by the court of probate for said county, by which he devised his real estate in the words following:
"First, I give and bequeath unto my daughter, Huldah Straw, my only child, and to her heirs, all my property, real, personal and mixed, after paying all my debts and funeral charges; but in case she should die and leave no issue, so much of my real estate as she shall not need for her support during her natural life, I give and bequeath to James Straw, of Weathersfield, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, and son of Reuben Straw [Jr], my nephew [this would make Reuben Straw Sr his brother], by his paying two hundred dollars to Huldah Straw, of Strafford, in the county of Orange and State of Vermont, daughter of Joseph Straw [Jr}my nephew [this would make Joseph Straw Sr his brother]; and in case said James Straw should die and leave no issue, then the property to go to my lawful heirs."
Thus.....Reuben would have probable sibs:
Dorothy b. 1764 who m. James Prescott
Joseph b. 1780 who m. Abigail Sanborn
Hannah b. c1780 who m. Richard Page [this one still iffy]
Susannah b. c1781 who m. _____Eaton
Lydia b.1787 who m. Abraham Hodgman
James b. 1788 who m. Jane Rolfe

Moses S. Strew

b. 1838 in VT and married Susan J. (Weaver?) who was born 1848 KY. I was unable to locate Moses again in any census until 1870 when he at age 32 and Susan at age 22 appear married in Rice county, KS. Her mother is also in the HH (Ann Weaver) age 47 b. KY. In 1875 Moses and Susan [S J] have relocated to Lakin, Barton County in Kansas where it says Moses [M S] came to Kansas from Colorado. He did serve in the Civil War out of Colorado and was there in 1864. I could not locate him again until I found a newspaper clipping [OREGONIAN - 2 Nov 1887] that announces the divorce procedings between Moses and Susan. In 1890 Moses filed for a Civil War pension in the state of Oregon [having served in Colorado] and no wife is listed. Mrs S. J Strew apprears in the Portland city Polk Directories for 1887 taking in lodgings. She last appears in 1889 in Tacoma, WA. Moses Strew is buried in Croxton Pioneer Memorial Park in Grants Pass, Josephine County, Oregon but there are no dates. Could anyone living in that area possibly find out when he died? I would greatly appreciate any further information.

William Thomas Straw -
Death Date 05 Jan 1933 Death Place Green Twp., Mercer, Illinois
Gender Male Age 10 Estimated Birth Year 1923 Birth Date 30 Jul 1922 Birthplace Carlysle, Iowa
Father James E. Straw Father's Birth Place Glensdale, Vermont
Mother Olive Gartral (sic) Mother's Birth Place Bedford, Iowa
Burial Date: 06 Jan 1933
Burial Place: Viola, Mercer, Ill.
Cemetery: Viola
The following numbers are catalog numbers for the Mormons files and won't give you any number to refer to on the death certificate.
Digital Folder Number: 4008355
Image Number: 1738
Film Number: 1684953
*********************************************
I would suggest either calling or writing to the Town clerk in Green, Mercer county, Illinois and asking for a copy of his death certificate. There will probably be a charge for mailing it to you. I have no idea what the cause of death might have been. You might also try calling the Viola Cemetery in Mercer county, IL and see if they have in their records a cause of death. Often cemeteries will give this information freely. Most cemetery records are computerized now so should be easy to check this out.

I looking in my book about the Staw family...."Allen Straw resided in Irvona where he served the Borough as Constable for many years. He is now a resident of Akron OH." (this book was copyrighted in 1931) "His wife has been dead for several years. He has 3 sons, all living in Akron"

It is written that they could not carry out this family any further due to lack of info....

Allen Straw's father was John C Straw Sr, the third son of Christian and Elizabeth (Curry) Straw, and he married Mary Ann Smith of Beccaria Township. John died 11-13-1901 at 93yrs old. He was a potter by trade and followed farming and other occupations during his life and raised Jasper, Allen, Charley, Annie and Josephine.

Now this book goes back much further if you are interested....I'd buy the book.

I purchased a book about 5-7 yrs ago about the Straw family. Title is "Some Genealogies and Family Records" By Albert Y Straw Copyright 1931. Without digging into my box of genealogy things ( I have to go to work in a few minutes, I just found these posts on Elmer D Straw), I am thinking I purchased this book from the Clearfield PA library. The Weston family of Straws are in it. I also have info on Dora (McWhorter), Elmer's wife. If anyone is still interested or following this thread you can email me at debarwendy@hotmail.com
When Mahala remarried to Israel Samuel Straw, Bessie took the surname of Straw [ not sure if she was actually adopted by Israel Samuel Straw]
Written by her daughter Mary Straw Polson- This is copied verbatim, spellings puntuation and all from a typwritten sheet given to me {S. Dodrer] by my mother's cousin, Dorothy Straw Meek in 2009. Much of this story had been told to me by my own grandmother Inis.
"My mother was Emiline Mahala Gartrell. Her father was Daniel Gartrell, her mother was Sarah Otis Gartrell (The Otis family can be traced back to Francis Billington who came to America on the Mayflower).
I don't know when she married my father, but she was a widow with a baby girl named Bessie. My brother told me mother was less than five ft. tall and had dark hair and brown eyes. I can remember a few things about her altho' she died when I was six years old. The first year they were married they lived in a shack that had a straw roof. One summer night she said she woke up feeling something crawling over the bed. Lighting the light, she saw a huge bull snake slithering over them! Needless to say, she was happy when father finished the house he was building that summer, and she had real windows and doors! I remember her as being willing to laugh with us and share our childish games. Once she took my sister, Inis, and me to a little sandy creek that ran thru the woods on our farm to go wading and playing in the sand. We talked mother into taking off her shoes and stockings and join us. A neighbor man came riding his horse thru the woods and saw us much to mothers embarassment but he tho't it such a good joke he told my father, and I shall never forget how furious father was. He said she had disgraced him by being bare foot and holding her skirts up above her knees and playing like a child, and he assured her he could never "hold up his head" in the neighborhood again! I'm sure the neighbor man never knew how strict my father was. Life as a farmers wife wasn't very easy in those days. Their job was to raise poultry and gardens, and they spent long hours over hot wood fires cooking big meals and preserving the garden produce.
I think mother must have been pregnant most of the time.
Her childrens names were, (besides Bessie who spent most of her life with mother's sister, Martha Davis, so we saw very little of her) William,Anna Straw Lackey,Olive,Vern,Ira,Benjerman,(Benjamin),Ida,Daniel(who died as a baby) Inis Straw-Salisbury, Mary Straw-Polson,Jesse,and Ethel Straw-England.
She died October 9, 1910, at age 41 and is buried in a little country cemetery in Taylor County,Iowa near Bedford."
per Sharon Dodrer on www.rootsweb.com message board April 2001: " Bessie was born 14 May 1888 as Bessie Mae King. She married Edward Anson Straw who would have been her stepfather's brother. They divorced and she later married August Eiler. She had 3 daughters according to my grandmother, her half-sister: Hattie Mae,Thelma, and Rosena."
She was the stepdaughter of Israel Samuel Straw. Bessie divorced Anson Edward STRAW 29 April 1909

Found Newspaper clipping dated 28 Aug 1923 that states " Mrs. August Eiler of Red Oak thought daughter Thelma Straw was dead; reunited after 14 years on 28 Aug 1923"

Iowa State Census Collection, 1836-1925
census Date: 1 Jan 1925; Red Oak,Montgomery county, Iowa
Bessie Erlon [Bessie King] Birth Year: abt 1889 Birth Place;Missouri ; female; white; married Belford, Iowa
Spouse; August Eiler
Mother: Emma Gartrell born Iowa
Father: Will King born Missouri
Members of household:
August Eiler age 32
Bessie Eiler age 36
Resena Mary Eiler age 10

obit Red Oak highlights 2 Feb 1949
Mrs Besise M.
The most thorough Straw compendium is this website:
http://www.straw.ws/jao/pub/jao/588.htm
This page is probably the man you are looking for; the names match and the dates are close.
This site has most of the New England Straw line and is very thorough. It does not include the Pennsylvania Straw line which came originally from Stroh.
Anyone researching Straw lines in America should have this site's home page bookmarked.
Tom Walden
.

I am looking for information on Albert Straw b. 1833 in Ohio. He was in Twp. 102, Minnesota Territory in 1857. I believe his brother Gilbert was living with him (Civil War Vet). His father was David Straw b. c. 1790 Vermont according to the 1850 Census for Johnson, Trumbull Co., Ohio. My 3rd great grandmother, Minerva Straw Mizner was a sister to Albert. I found no more information past the 1860 census for Albert in Carimona, Fillnore, Minnesota. Any info. woulf be aprreciated.
Good to hear from you. We are cousins then. A few generations back. Feel free to use my regular email: twalden27@gmail.com. I will check my tree but I think James Edward Ansson Straw is one of the confusing people in the tree. At one point I thought he was two different people and I don't think he is really sorted out. My grandfather is named after your grandfather. (a generation apart) My grandfather is Edward Anson Straw, son of Ashley Straw who is Cyrus' son.

I don't have any pictures of Cyrus but he was my gt grandfather. My grandfather was James Edward Anson Straw. My father was Edward James Straw. Not sure how many siblings my father had, but there is at least 7 that I know of. Have a few pictures of my grandfather but nothing before that. Would be happy to exchange information with you.

Cyrus Griffin Straw

I am hoping to find a descendant of Cyrus Griffin STRAW b. 1817 in New Hampshire, d. 1892 in Gravity, Iowa. I figure someone must have a photograph of him since he lived so long into the photographic era. I have photos of wife, Sally STEARNS and 3 of the boys and one daughter. My gr grandfather was son Ashley b. 1864 Vermont, d. Redwood, Minnesota. I would be happy to share photos I have of the family and am hoping to find photos of Cryus and any of his children.
Cyrus' parents Samuel STRAW and Mary GRIFFIN lived into the 1870's so I've got to believe there are photos of them also. You can reply here for all to see and also use my regular email. twalden27@gmail.com
Thanks, Tom Walden
p.s. Attached is a photo of Sally Mae STEARNS STRAW, Cyrus' wife

Thank you. That sounds like the family I am looking for. Her marriage to Straw must have been shortly before she died in 1913. I will keep looking.

this census is unreadable and how this transcription came about I cannot image...This info is probably way off but I wouldnt rule it out. Whether the quality of the census is a ancestry.com problem or it was always in this condition I don't know. I reported it as unreadable.
1910 United States Federal Census

Name: Lawrence
Age in 1910: 52
Estimated birth year: abt 1858
Birthplace: New Hampshire
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: New Hampshire
Mother's Birth Place: New Hampshire
Home in 1910: Woodstock, Windsor, Vermont
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Lawrence 52
Emma M Lawrence 20
Lawrence 5
Lawrence 3
Lawrence 1 0/12

I am not related

Regards,

Connie

Emma married Maitland V. Lawrence c1894. She then married ____ Straw sometime after 1900. I am trying to find out the given name of Mr. Straw.
Emma died 1913 in Woodstock,Windsor County, VT at age 50yr and 9 days on 26 Feb 1913. She was widowed and the d/o Lorenzo Staples and Martha Thompson.
In 1900 she appears with her husband Maitland V, Lawrence and they are living in Woodstock, Windsor county, Vermont.
I can't find Emma in the 1910 census nor Maitland...and no Straws/Shaws in Windsor county either in 1900 or 1910.
Would appreciate anything you might be able to add so I can determine her Straw husband's given name
