Hello njbobob,

I believe we have a connection to your wife's family.

You wife's John Stretton and my Anne Stretton were probably siblings.

Another newly-discovered cousin has contacted me to say he believes he is more directly related to your wife. His grandmother and her grandmother may have been sisters. Please do email me directly at stardog235@swan-island.com, if you wish, and I will make the connection for you.

Hoping to hear from you!
Anne

De Courcy Stretton

My great aunt was Mary Adela de Courcy Stretton 1893-1954, she was the daughter of Willian de Courcy Stretton 1862-1916 and Beata Caroline Stead 1862-1942. She lost four brothers in the first world war (Alexander, William, Conrad, John) only her sister Catherine (who married a Scobie) and Michael 1894-1951 survived. Before all this carnage her father had penned the words to the patriotic song "Follow the Colours" which Elgar set to music.

Anyway, Mary ADC Stretton married my uncle David Morgan Richards and we know they had a daughter in the 1920s, but we can't find a record of her. A presumed relative of hers posted anonymously to amazon.co.uk (under Follow the Colors) a review that asked for any details of the de Courcy Strettons of Salcombe, but has never returned to see my answer.

So, any relatives of Mary Adela de Courcy Stretton can see part of their family on ancestry.com in a public tree Richards/Soska/Conran/Allin.

Adam Richards

My Grandfather was Thomas Root Stretton. He immigrated to Canada in the early 1900s from England: maybe Stoke on Trent? My grandmother was Florence Elizabeth Chamberlain before she married him. That's all I know of them.

I seem to be tracking back to the Leitrim Strettons as well... my wife's grandmother is Alice Stretton from Leitrim, daughter of John Stretton (1847?-??) and Bridget (1854?-??) (maiden name unknown). Was John a sibling of "your" Anne ?

My name is Karolina Streton and i live in Sweden. I have family in Denmark. I know that we came from England but i dont know when.
My grandmothers name is Birthe Streton and her fathers name is Charles Peter Streton. His fathers name i belive is Carl Otto Streton. I think Carl Otto came from england with his family but i don't know in what year. My grandmother says that our lastname was spelled Stretton before we changed it to Streton. And that someone in the family has worked for the queen of England by taking care of her crown jewels. I dont know if that is true but if there is anyone that have more infomation i would be glad to hear about it.
You are welcome to send me e-mails to karolina_streton@yahoo.se

Hi....thought I'd throw my STRETTONs into the mix:

My g-grandfather's sister, ELLEN OGDEN b. 18870 Barnsley, Yorkshire married JOHN WILLIAM STRETTON b. 1870 Barnsley. The marriage was on December 9, 1889 at St. George's in Barnsley.
John was the son of WILLIAM STRETTON.

They had three children: ALBERT OGDEN b. 1889 d. 1889 (born prior to marriage); FLORENCE STRETTON b. 1890; and GERTRUDE STRETTON b. 1891.

John died on March 30, 1895 of acute rheumatism & morbis cordis in Barnsley. He was a miner prior to his death.

If any of this looks familiar, I'd love to hear from you!

mary lou
These records are filmed extractions of parish registers that the Mormans do on their missions and make freely available on line.
I'm trying to find more details on William Stretton who was born in Hinckley, Leicestershire around 1812. Eventually he married Rose Ann ? from Ireland and moved to Nottingham where he raised his family. His family shows up in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 British Census (although he appears to have passed away in 1852).

This is from the 1851 Census:

William Stretton Father Age 39 Occupation is is Framework Knitter. Born in Hinckley, Leicestershire
Rose Ann Stretton Mother Age 34 Occupation – Lace Dresser. Born in Ireland
William Age 11
John Age 9
Henry Age 7
David Age 6
Sarah Age 2

They lived at 66 Currant Street in Nottingham in the Civic Parrish of St. Mary and the Ecclesiastical Parish of St. John.

I'm looking for more information on Williams parents and background in Leicestershire, but have hit a dead end. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm descended from his son John who moved to Philadelphia around 1865.

Okay. I've actually found John in Nottinghamshire in the 1851 and 1861 census.

In 1851 he is listed with his family:

Father: William Age 39
Mother: Rose Age 34
William Age 11
John Age 9
Henry Age 7
David Age 6
Sarah Age 2

In 1861 he is listed with:

Mother: Rose Ann Age 44
William Age 21
John Age 19
Henry Age 17
David Age 16

In 1863 I believe he married Sarah Ann Fox, also from Nottinghamshire. They came to America sometime between then and 1866.

After 1866, after migrating to Philadelphia, they had 3 children, Selina, Lillian and Arthur John (my grandfather).

There seem to be numerous Stretton's in Nottingham, but John's father, William is listed in the 1851 census as being born in Hinckley in Leicester. His mother is listed as having been born in Ireland.

This is where I am stuck. I'm trying to see how much further I can trace the Stretton name from here, but seem to have hit a dead end. Does anyone else have any insight into this line? I'd appreciate any information you can send to me.

Thanks

Allen Stretton
Hello Pete:
I've been trying to track my ancestors back and have hit a dead end in Nottinghamshire and Leicester.

My great grandfather was John Stretton. He was born in 1842 in Nottinghamshire and came to Philadelphia around 1865. I believe I have found him in the 1861 and 1851 English Census in Nottinghamshire. In 1851 he is listed with his family:

Father: William Age 39
Mother: Rose Age 34
William Age 11
John Age 9
Henry Age 7
David Age 6
Sarah Age 2

In 1861 he is listed with:

Mother: Rose Ann Age 44
William Age 21
John Age 19
Henry Age 17
David Age 16

In 1863 I believe he married Sarah Ann Fox, also from Nottinghamshire.

I'm trying to find information on a John Stretton (middle name may have been Arthur). He was married to a Sarah (last name might have been Roberts) and probably came to Philadelphia in the mid 1860's. From US census records it looks like he was born around 1842 in England, but I'm unable to locate anything else. In some Philadelphia Census, his name is Stratton and on his Naturalizaiton Papers it is spelled both ways. His son, Arthur John, used Stretton for the rest of his life. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Allen Stretton

Hi,
I'm not sure. I image they probably are connected but I don't really have much information about them. They mainly seem to be around the Appleby area for those that I can find information on.
I'll go and have another look at the records and see if I can find anything else.
Regards
Derek

Hello
I have connections to Stretton Family. My relation lived in Birmingham and married into the Morton family, the Strettons originally came from Enderby Leicester. Wondered if there was any connection

Regards

Kay

Re: Strettons in Ireland

I have a great grandfather John Stretton born in Dublin in 1839. He was a career soldier ( 10th regiment) as was his father Hugh Stretton. Oral Family history says Hugh was in the Napoleonic wars....maybe Waterloo...brought back a French or Belgian war bride.

He left the army after serving in many foreign countries and married a Norfolk woman Jane Starling (nee Cooper) in Essex England in a Catholic church in 1880 and emigrated to Australia where they had 2 daughters. Wife and grown daughters re-emigrated to the USA early 1900s.

I have a copy of the wedding cert which is how I found that I actually had an Irish-born ancestor. Ironic in that I am an American citizen and had been living in Ireland for about 10 years and had turned up no Irish ancestors whatsoever when I got the cert and a big surprise.

Any more info you have on Irish Strettons would be greatly appreciated and I will send you what I have if you like.

Best Wishes

Michael Becker
