William Riley Stricklin-Moses Stricklin-William Crownover-William Orrick

Please bear with me--this is long but I am trying to either prove or disprove connections between my ancestor William Riley Stricklin, Moses Stricklin, William Orrick family, and William Crownover family.

For many years I have been searching for the father of my g-g-g-grandfather, William Riley Stricklin who was born in 1802 in South Carolina, was found in the 1830 Franklin County Tennessee Census, moved to Alabama by 1835 (based on the birth year and birthplace of his youngest child) and appears in the 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870 Blount County Alabama Censuses, the 1880 Cullman County Alabama Census, died in 1885 in Cullman County, Alabama and is buried at Addington's Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery in Cullman County, Alabama (at the little church I attended growing up).

Through Y-DNA testing of a male line (Stricklin surname) descendant it is proven that William Riley Stricklin belongs to Y-DNA haplogroup Q1a3a1. Haplogroup Q1a3a1 is one of the few Y Chromosome haplogroups strictly associated with the indigenous peoples of the Americas (Native Americans/American Indians) . Also, William R. Stricklin has ancestors in common with William Tapp or Taptico who was a Native American tribal leader who was born around 1650 in Northumberland County Virginia.

I have searched for a connection to the family of Moses Stricklin who was the father of Celia Ola Stricklin who married William Orrick.

I found Moses in the 1790 Cheraws District South Carolina Census, 1810 and 1820 Pendleton County SC Census, 1830 Jackson County Alabama Census. Jackson County Alabama is adjacent to and south of Franklin County Tennessee.

Until now, I have not been able to find a possible link to my William R. Stricklin as I have just recently found some Franklin County Tennessee Probate documents that indicate that Moses owned land in Franklin County, Tennessee (more about those documents later) and sold land in Franklin County Tennessee in 1837.

I have the following information on Celia Ola Stricklin Orrick that has been posted previously on the internet by her descendants:
" Celia Ola Strickland was born on July 23, 1787 at NC. She was the daughter of Moses Strickland. Celia Ola Strickland married William Orrick, son of William Orrick and Sarah Comfort, on February 19, 1805 at SC.
" She was enumerated with William Orrick on the Pike County, AR census dated November 11, 1850; Sealy was shown at age 62 as a married white female born in South Carolina.
" She was enumerated with Ephriam M. Orrick on the Pike County, AR census dated 1860; Cela was shown at age 72 as a widowed white female born in North Carolina. Celia Ola Strickland died circa 1862 at Pike County, AR.
" She may be part Cherokee - Eastern Cherokees Application 3079, Andrew J. Alford, Record Group 123, National Archives, Washington, D.C.
"3079. Andrew J. Alford and 4 children. Crowder City, Okla. Rejected. Neither applicant nor ancestors were enrolled. Went west in 1835 from Alabama to Arkansas. Does not establish fact of descent from a person who was a party to the treaties of 1835-6 and 1846. Misc. Test. 2625. "Misc. Test. P. 2625. No. 3079 - Andrew J. Alford. 'My name is Andrew J. Alford, my post-office is Crowder City, Okla. I was born in Pike Co., Arkansas in 1842. I claim relationship to the Cherokee Indians through my mother, whose maiden name was Nancy Orrick who was one-eighth. She was born in Alabama in either Cherokee County or Jackson County. I do not know what year. My mother claims through her mother whose maiden name was Celia Strickland. My people moved from Alabama to Arkansas in 1835. My parents did not come west with the Indians. I do not know of any enrollment of my people although I remember when a boy my grandfather sending in the name of Strickland to be enrolled as a Cherokee Indian. We never received any money or land from the government.' Signed, Andrew (x) J. Alford, McAlester, Okla., Sep. 5, 1908. Exception Case. Rejected. Total number of exceptions filed in this group - 3. Original recommendation renewed."

Now those Probate documents:
The copies I worked from were not very clear and I could not decipher every word or line. I am not familiar with all the terminology that was used but this is what I think I see:

Moses Stricklin to B.[C.or G.] William Crownover 25 acres on waters of
Crow Creek Franklin County Tennessee
August 25th 1837
I Moses Stricklin have this day bargained and sold unto William
Crownover a certain tract or parcel of land ??? lying and being in
the county of Franklin and State of Tennessee and on the waters of
Crow Creek it being the fourth part of a two hundred acre tract
granted to Isham Harris by the state of Tennessee.
Charles C. Stricklin, Service Number 39029277

Published this morning at:http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20101201/NEWS/101209915

IT WAS RATS that led pest exterminator Steve Gustafson up into the attic of a rental home on Brand Road, between Rincon Valley and Oakmont.

And there he found a U.S. Army Air Corps photo album. Gustafson expected it might be rat-chewed.

But it’s like new, though all the black-and-white snapshots inside are from early 1943. They show enlistee Charles C. Stricklin, Service Number 39029277, and some buddies at aircraft mechanics’ schools in Gulfport, Miss., and Rantoul, Ill.

Handwriting beneath the photos identifies Stricklin’s pals as Frank Bublitz, Charlie Northcutt, Ernie Long, Rudy Karish and Ed Van Sice.

There also are pictures of Nadean, clearly Stricklin’s sweetheart. Written under one of her photos: “Sweet enough to be rationed.”

Pest-controller Gustafson would love to find Stricklin or members of his family and offer up the album.

Someone local may claim it, but thought I'd pass the info on.

Hey Uncle Fred, I just started the Stricklin Family tree on Ancestry to see if this is any better than the other website I was using. I just ran across your post. The biological mother of your father & aunts name is Juana del Castillo and she was from San Salvador, Santa Ana or something like that. I have added this to my records if you'd like to go have a look. Send me your email address and I will send you an invite. Thanks for the info for Carl Galveston. I did not have the death date and I'm not sure whether to change the spelling to "Strickland" or not.

I am looking for more info on A M Stricklin who married Mary Elizabeth Jett Duncan in Osage County, MO on 15 Aug 1886. I have no birth/death dates or locations; or age at time of marriage for A M Stricklin. I did find a death record for a Mrs AM Stricklin in St Louis in 1896, with burial in Lima OH. I don't even know if it is the same family. This is one of those black holes/brick walls. Any info would be greatly appreciated. dsc

Interesting, during a trip to Miami I visited my grandfathers grave and his name was indeed spelled Carl G. Strickland October 5 1890 to June 4 1957. As I said I am One of 7 children to Charlie Daniel(or formaly Downing I believe) Stricklin who had several sisters named Helen Ashton Susie and I just found out there was another sister that may have been left in Honduras when a divorce occured from a woman whose name I believe was Juana. My siblings in age order are Daniel Galveston Stricklin, Carl Spencer Stricklin, Myself (Frederick William Stricklin) George Edward Stricklin, Roger Albert Stricklin, Cynthia Marilyn? Stricklin, and Sandra Yvonne Stricklin.

I think maybe I can help you decide if Artie Mary or Mary Artie truly does belong in the William Henry Stricklin Family. Most of the information posted out on the internet about the William Riley Stricklin family (Wm Henry Stricklin's father) is my information whether or not my name is listed in the sources. This is my family. My maiden name is Stricklin and William Riley Stricklin is my great-great-great grandfather and William Henry is my great-great grandfather. Both are buried in the cemetery of the church that my family attended (and some of us still attend) when I was growing up.
My information is posted on RootsWeb as Descendants of William Riley Stricklin of SC/TN/AL at the following link:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

If you will sent me your email address I will send you the information that I think proves that Mary Artie was the daughter of William Henry Stricklin.
jgsdover@bellsouth.net

I was researching my Aunt's family in Freehold, Monmouth Co., NJ and traced her family back to Thomas Stricklin b. 1778. In the 1850 census he had a farm in Freehold Twp. His son, Thomas W.(b. 1811) m. Susan S.(b. 1805/1808). In the 1900 census, Susan is living with her dau. Caroline Clayton on South St. in Freehold and listed as Susan S. Strickland, 94 y.o. So you may want to try variations such as Strickland and I saw also, Stricklan.
Good Luck,
Ruth

I am Reasearching the Stricklin Line in Southern Alabama. The above names are brothers and sisters of my ggrandmother who was Nettie Stricklin. I think their parents were James Mack or Max Stricklin & Mary Adeline Wilson. All the brothers and sisters were born in Alabama. James Stricklin was born in Alabama and his parents were both born in Georgia. In this Census 1920 in Coffee Co. it lists James as James W BUT it is James M......he has the same wife and birthdate and the writing actually looks like a M not a W.
Any help with my Stricklin line would be Greatly Appreciated.

Thanks
Suzanne Davis Baggett

Eyvonne, I have some information on your husband's father which you may not have. I know he had a younger sister named Delia, b. abt. 1904 and a younger step-brother named Rob or Artie Ford (probably Artie), b. abt. 1915. I also have info on your husband's Stricklin ancestors back to 1850 verified through census records. I don't know if I have given these to your husband or not. I lost track of him about five years ago and my memory is not great.
If you will email me (JamPisk@aol.com) I'll be glad to send you what I have. It's just too much to put online.
