If this name is familiar to you, I'll email you a photo of her with 12 other women. Their dresses have mutton sleeves and look to be 1890's-early 1900's. Sorry, no location mentioned, but all names are written on the back.

Try to find a copy of the book I mentioned in the post you replied to. There are also some follow up books by the same author on the Stryker/Stryker families. These are the source of most of what I know about the James Stryker who moved to Ontario and his relatives that went there. Also a great source of info about the Stryker ancestors.

Melda Striker Dietz b. New Washington, Ohio

LILBURN, GA: Family and friends will greatly miss Melda Dietz, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who had just celebrated her 80th birthday.

Please join the family for her memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 13 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lilburn, Georgia with visitation following the service.

A resident of Lilburn, Georgia, she died February 2, 2010. Melda was born in New Washington, Ohio, one of 11 children of Ruth and George Striker.

Her hair was so white-blond as a toddler that her dad called her tow head (shortened to toad by her brothers and sister). She grew up in a fun-loving, hard-working farm family. It was during the Depression and nobody had any money, but Melda always looked back at this time in her life with great fondness. At her small rural school she played softball, ran track, sang, played in the band and was named May Day Queen. She grew up always wanting to be a nurse. She worked at Bucyrus, Ohio Community Hospital as a teenager and worked her way through nursing school in Massillon, Ohio.

She met her husband, Eugene, through a classmate at nursing school and they were married in 1953. They spent their salad days in Columbus, Ohio, while Eugene finished his degree and Melda worked for an obstetrician, delivering babies. They began their family and had three children, John, Jane and Jill. Melda worked in geriatric nursing in Columbus, Ohio; psychiatric nursing in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and psychiatric nursing and home health care nursing in Atlanta. She loved seeking out estate sales and thrift stores and had incredible eagle eyes to find prizes where others saw nothing.

Condolences may be sent or viewed at:

www.wagesfuneralhome.com.

Re: James Striker

I am looking at "Genealogical Record of the Strycker Family
Complied by William S stryker of Trenton, New Jersey in 1887. It was printed for private distribution by him. This Record starts with a Preface as to his recording this history. Then he tells about them coming from Holland.

Following is his introduction in part:

"The Strÿcker family is of remote antiquity in Holland. All the several branches of the family in the United States, whose names, idem sonans, regardless of the spelling, which
has been often changed and written Stryker, Strÿcker, Striker, Stricker, are derived directly from this old Dutch parentage. Certain parts of the family have been seated near The Hague for over eight hundred years and another line near Rotterdam. It appears that the prefix "Van" in olden times was often written before the name, but it was dropped, however, by the brothers who came to America. In St. Bavon's Kirk, the Great Church at Haarlem, which contains the grand organ, we find interred in the High Choir, No. 37, the Remains of Dirck Strÿcker, who died September 2, 1677, who was Secretary to the Court of Law in Holland. That he was a man of note and influence is indicated by the official burial book and the tablets in that ancient edifice. From Motley's history of the Dutch Republic we learn that one Herman Strÿcker, a monk who had abjured Romanism, created, in the year 1562, a wide spread revival of religion among the masses of Holland. Mrs. Charles, in her "Deliverers of Holland," gives considerable account of his labors. His eloquence drew thousands to listen to him, and it is said he preached to fifteen thousand men in arms during the regency of Alva.
In the pedigree of the family fourteen descents are given in Holland up to 1791. Several years ago the late Judge James Stryker obtained from Holland the coat of arms of the
family, and much of the interesting information here given concerning it.
The coat-armorial is as follows:
Pall of four, or the gules, three boars' heads, sable, armed azure. Crest----out of a ducal coronet, a griffin's head sable, between two palm branches in orle vert.
Supporters---Two dragons, dexter side gules, sinister side or.
There is a legend in the family that during the twelfth century the brothers by this name were very clannish and constituted a strong body of valiant men able and ready to defend their own rights with their own good swords. A jealousy of the equally renowned for prowess in combat. On one occasion the Van Strÿcker family received an invitation to a great feast at which it was proposed to come to some final settlement of the feud which existed between these rival parties. They accepted, at the same time suspecting some treachery. The secret was discovered beforehand and a plan arranged to meet it. The feast began and in the middle of it the servants of the host placed upon the table three boars' heads. This was the signal agreed upon for the extermination of the Van Strÿcker family. They, however, rallied quickly at a certain portion of the room, were terrible when they acted thus on the defensive and turned the plat with deadly effect upon their opponents. This tradition has come down through the family and may account for the boar's heads which appear upon the coat of arms. The motto of the family, which in English means "Most terrible at bay," has been Latinized " In extremis terribilis," and although it still preserves the legend referred to is of little value historically, as few if any Dutch families retain the motto, even though it may have been hereditary with those who first adopted it.
It is understood it is never given with the coat armor in Holland.
In the middle of the seventeenth century Jan and Jacobus Van Strÿcker received from the States General of the Netherlands a grant of land in the colony at New Amsterdam,
upon condition that they took out with them to America twelve other families at their own expense. This grant was dated in january, 1643. It does not appear that the offer was finally acted upon until eight years thereafter, and then the younger brother Jacobus left the fatherland one year before Jan, and founded the old Knickerbocker family of this name in and near New Amsterdam.
There is a record, however, on Volume 1, page 437, of "Documents relative to the Colonial History of the State of New York," edited by E. B. O'Callaghan, where one of the
name of D. Strÿcker, with other Dutch merchants, petition the States General "representing that they have traded to all the Carribean Islands and to Virginias, and that they only give from October 3rd, 1650, to March 20th, 1651, for us to take away our ships under pain of forfeiture of ships and goods. They pray the Noble, High and Mighty the Lords, States General of the United Netherlands, that they direct their Commissioners to treat with the Ambassadors from England so that they may be saved from loss or be deprived of a trade so advantageous." It is generally supposed that this man returned to Holland, as no record can be found of him after this date and no trace of any of his descendants. it may however be, that this is the Dirck Strÿcker hereinbefore referred to.
Two facts may here be mentioned. In a hasty glance at this genealogical record the great longevity of the family cannot fail to be noticed. Another fact becomes equally patent to those who are at all familiar with the line, and who have examined carefully into the history and traditions of the family, and that is that many of the men were of exceptionally great physical strength."

I hope this gives some of you some new information. This man wrote many stories on some of the line. I'm almost half way through the record as there are 112 pages. All white on black and it has taken lots of time trying to get it all into my friends GED COM I'm doing for her. She was told by her father that this was a book of his family but thus far I'm not found the connection. Hope is ever present but without Creators and possibly your help I'm not sure it will ever happen as she only has her father and mother and Their parents names with no other information.
ENJOY The above.
Liz

My Great-Grandfather was Adam Striker of Cape Elizabeth and South Portland Maine. His wife's name was Ruth Gorman. His military records show that he was born in Christman, Illinois, his father born in Germany and his mother born in Holland. When he re-enlisted four years later, records indicate that he claimed to have been born in Indiana and that both his mother and father were born there, too. He had a son (my grandfather) Perry A. Striker of Portland, Maine. Perry's wife was Coraice Scott Striker. I am the daughter of Perry & Coraice's son, John G. Striker (b. 1932, d. 2002, Portland, Maine) and Mary Dyer Striker (b. 1927). John also had three siblings, Anita (of Portland and Westbrook, Maine), Ronald (of Vermont), and Joyce (of Portland and Westbbrook, Maine). Would be happy to have any information pertaining to this family - specifically looking for Adam (Adave)Striker's parents.

Striker, James

James Striker, Dutchess County, New York came to Canada around the late 1700's at the time of the Loyalist movement.
His 2 nephews who were Loyalists stayed at his place. James believed political feelings should not prejudice family affections - the continental authorities felt different. James was court martialled for harboring spies and abetting them to escape to another country. A high ranking revolutionary officer intervened on his behalf but the authorities confiscated all his property. Without wealth and ill at ease of those who misjudged him, James immigrated to Greenbush Town, Prince Edward County, Ontario Canada.
(info from Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte, Mika Publishing Company, Belleville Ontario 1976)
Wife of James Striker ? The Picton Library has 2 volumes (of a 4 volume series) of the Stryker ( Striker) family written by William Norman Striker called The Stryker Family in America.

The book The Stryker Family in America by William N. Stryker, 1979, has information on ancestry and descendants of Jacobus/James Stryker/Striker. This book also contains the story about James Striker's aid to his loyalist nephews. James migrated to Canada as his brother Samuel had done. He died in 1835 and was buried in the Picton Parish Graveyard, Prince Edward Co. Ontario. One of his sons named Daniel moved from NY to Michigan about 1835. Daniel is my 4th great grandfather. Would be happy to share further information and would love to find out more!

James Striker

The following information is from the "Stryker Family in America", 1979,by William Norman Stryker:

James/Jacobus Striker/Stryker was the son of John Stryker and Sarah Crooker, grandson of Jacobus Stryker and Martha Griggs, great grandson of Gerrit Strycker and Wyntie Cornelise Boomgaert, and great great grandson of Jacobus Gerritsen Strijcker and Ytie Huybrechts. Jacobus Strijcker and his family came from Ruinen in Holland to New Amsterdam in 1651.

The wife of James/Jacobus (b. 1752) is not named in this source. In addition to John and Garret, his children are named as James, m. Freelove Peters, his will dated Beekman NY March 24, 1824; Samuel, d. Washington NY, his estate inventory dated March 7, 1836; Daniel, m. Judith Sophia Way, d. 1848 Jackson Co. Michigan; two daughters, first names unknown, one m. Henry Harris and lived in Canada.

Apparently the estate record for Samuel names his nieces and nephews, but I have not yet checked it. Also according to this source, the family papers of John Striker are in the Picton Canada Library.

Also per this source, James/Jacobus had a brother Sampson, m. Ursula Clapp. They were loyalists and moved to Canada in 1786. They also used the name "Striker".

Stryker Book

I believe the book is available on film through the LDS Family History centers. You may be able to find it in a major genealogy library in Canada. I found it at the Allen Co. Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana, US, which is supposed to be second only to Salt Lake City, Utah for genealogy sources. I haven't yet found one to purchase, but would sure like to get my own copy.
