Well, perhaps I was wrong... After I dug some more I found that this line is most confusing. Have you ever searched on WWW.dogpile.com? They have some marvelous online histories. I was reading some of the previous posts and everyone seems confused.
Apparently, Adam and Peter Stroud came from Germany and settled in Webster County, now West Virginia. Peter built his cabin (he and wife and children) on Indian land, the Indians raided and killed them all. Brother Adam lived closeby, saw the smoke and went to check. After discovering this horror and burying the dead, he went to the nearest outpost for help. He and four others tracked the Indians. What happened next is sad, but understandable. They attacked and killed the first Indians they came upon, sadly not the Indians responsible for the massacre. A famous chief called Captain Bull was killed.
Laterr this Adam Stroud moved to the Scotch-Irish settlement in Augusta Virginia and was naturalized. He fought with Dunmore in the Indian wars just prior to the Revolution. This Adam Stroud is listed as a patriot and there is an application for Sons of Amer. Rev. I am not sure when he married Eve Hand, but the family went west to Ill with the Bagley family, also from Virginia. I couldn't figure how the family could be in Arkansas and Ill, but found an oral history from Adam Bagley dated 1887:
"Stroud Family, my grandparents on mother's side. The old folks names were Adam and Eve. They came from Virginia. They raised a family of 8: Adam, Samuel, Peter, Catherine (my Mother), Rebecca, Susan, Polly and Betsy. They owned a tract of land in the bottom of Monroe County North of Fountain Creek. They died there, then the children left there and went to Arkansas and never sold the land. I believe two of the heirs sold their undivided interest. The place has been sold for taxes time and again. His son Adam kept a Post Office somewhere in Arkansas for a long time. Susan and Samuel came back. She married a man by the name of Goacher. They, two, and Sam died in Jersey County, Illinois. She had no children."

From John Stroud - 5 May 2007
The more I look the more confused I seem to be. Adam had Adam b 1790 in Virginia, he had Adam b Ark 1825, he also had Samuel b 1822 Ark, Samuel is my link. Are you crazy yet??
I discovered this message board by accident. I just have been digging on the Stroud line and boy is there alot of confusion. Two Adam Strouds in Virginia at the same time! Here's what I have found: Adam Stroud immigrated from Germany, married Eve Hand and settled in Hampshire County Virginia, now West Virginia;fought in the Revoluntionary War.According to an application for Sons of the American REvolution, this line married Bagley & went to Illinois.
The other Adam Stroud came to America and settled in a Scotch-Irish settlement in Augusta County Virginia, also now W Virginia. He migrated to Indian Territory (Now Arkansas) in 1810, helped settle and develop Clark County Ark. He had a son also named Adam, who had a son named Samuel who had a daughter named Nancy who married William Manley Nelson who had a son named William Harrison Nelson who had a son named Everett Nelson who had me.

My husband's DNA matched 67 markers with Uriah Griffin. His earliest ancestor is Ashley P. Griffin, born 1816; NC-TN-MS. I am pretty sure that A.P.'s father is Solomon Griffin, born abt 1790, in NC/SC. There is a Solomon Griffin in Mecklinburg Co, NC where Uriah is. Our tree is on Ancestry.com (Griffin Tree). Solomon's father is William Griffin. Am trying to figure out WHICH Solomon & William are ours. There seems to be more than one father/son with the same names. So much info on the web is not accurate. Would love some help in solving our history.

I am from that Ensey/Stroud connection for which you are searching. I have found Jesse with cousins of mine in Texas in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 census. What I cannot figure out is HOW he is related. Even though the census says "cousin" or "nephew", I can't seem to find how his parents fit in with my ancestors. Please reply and let me know if you have found anything since 2003.

Have a whole bunch of Strouds in the Tillsonburg, Ontario area. They emigrated from England to the Pittsburgh area around 1820 and later moved to Canada and southern Oxford Co. Many were in that area from 1840-1900. Later, I'm sure they spread out.

Margaret, I don't know your people, but I'm also interested in Strouds from IoW Co. VA. I'm descended from William T. Stroud b:1844 IoW, son of Lemuel, b:IoW (?) and Mary (Pope)? He has sisters Martha A. b:1837 and Mary E. b:1842. They live near a Gwaltney family. Lemuel d:1853, Wife (?) Mary d:1858. W.H.Darden becomes guardian of William T., Wm. W Joyner guardian of the girls, of whom I find nothing more. I wonder whether Lemuel was brother of Bennett (close in age) and Dixon (5-10 yrs older) and whether they are all children of John Stroud and Amy Strickland, m:1 Dec 1798 Southampton Co. VA. Good luck in your search- I imagine that we are cousins of some kind, after all.

For anyone researching this family, I discovered them on the 1850 census, but the last name was transcribed as "Strorea" on Ancestry. I have updated it as of today. It is the same Joshua Stroud as on the 1850 Marion Co., AL state census. The next door neighbor (Ben Blackburn) is the same on both censuses. Joshua is there with wife Nancy and six children (Mary, Wesley, Martha, Benj F., Caroline, and a sixth name that is too hard to read but with clear middle initial (F) that has to be William "Fletcher" Stroud.

Do you mean Susie Stroud marrying Walter Mills in Clark. Arkansas in 1919?

I haven't traced the Mills family, but there were several in Lincoln, TN in 1830. I haven't figured out which one Nancy came from.

FYI: Nancy "Strowd" married, born TN, died in Jan. 1860, age 40,in Middle District, Fayette Co., AL from consumption after a 90 day illness. (1860 mortality schedules)

Joshua listed in Fayette, AL 1860 w/ Martha 17, Benjamin 16, Caroline 15, Fletcher 13. The family was sandwiched in between two McCraw households. In 1870, Limestone Co, you see some McCraw children living with some Strowds (A.W. Strowd had A.J. McCraw and next door J.W. Strowd had Sarah McCraw. I am curious about the connection/possible relationship.

Also curious about the Benjamin Strowd, 27, living next door to A.W. (Andrew Warren) Stroud and the Caroline, 27, living with J.W. Strowd (not certain she was the wife). Some trees on Ancestry have Andrew Warren Stroud and Joshua Stroud as brothers. Are they the children of Joshua who may have died between 1860 and 1870? I know that Fletcher Stroud, 23, was in Madison County living with William Stroud, 21.

If anyone has any thoughts on these ideas, please post.
Thanks.
Linda

Thank you for the response!

I saw on the 1860 census for Fayette, Al Joshua Strowd, 70, and 4 children, including Benjamin, 16, and Fletcher 13. All children born in Tn.

I have wondered if Joshua could have been the grandfather, because of his age.

I saw that Benj. Frank. married Jane Mosely and had 7 children. In 1880 they lived in Limestone CO. , AL. In 1900 he was in Wise, TX. Benj.Frank. stated that his father was born in SC and mother born in TN.

Fletcher stated on 1880 and 1900 census that his father was born in SC and his mother in Miss.

Can you tell me about Nancy Mills? The Manson referred to was a brother to my James Vincent Stroud, believing they both were married about the same time. Sorry, I don't have anything about Manson. Later on.

Hi, again, Tricia. I think I can contact one of my Stroud male cousins in Hope, AR. I know he has had some interest in the Stroud genealogy for some time as have others in his family. Much of what I know came from them, including a picture of John William Stroud and his wife Jane Agnes (Green) Stroud. John and Jane Stroud's youngest son General Marion Stroud and his family raised my grandmother Leola Jane Stroud Webb in Hempstead County, AR. General Marion Stroud's son Royal Stroud lived and died in the same county where his son and daughters still live today. Hoping a DNA test is possible from the son. It would be exciting to see where connections can be made. I would love to stay in touch because there is much I do not know about DNA testing. Thank you so much. lindacollins3626

Hi, Linda. We’ve had a few more tests from southern Strouds since I posted this, but not many: one from the Indiana Strouds (who came from PA via NC, I think); one from the Iredell Co. NC family, and a new match to the Stroud-Griffin family from a Daniel Stroud who lived in Marion Co. AL and Neshoba Co. MS. It would be great if you know a male Stroud descendant of John William Stroud who will take the test! I know there is speculation that your John William Stroud was born in Conecuh Co. AL. If that is true, it would place him among the descendants of John Stroud & Sarah Connally of Orange Co. NC and Clarke Co. GA. Some people think this is a branch of John & Hannah Stroud’s descendants. We have several DNA samples from that family already so you may be in a position to prove or disprove that theory. Other folks think the John Stroud who married Sarah Connally is a descendant of Barnett Stroud. If that’s true your sample from the Hempstead AR Strouds would be the first of that line. We've been trying for a long time to find a descendant of Barnett who would take the test.

Trisha, I know this is an old message, but I am interested to know if progress has been made to discover the Stroud Family DNA groups. My grandmother was Leola Jane Stroud, the daughter of William Stroud, the son of John William Stroud who may have been born in TN ca. 1802, possibly in AL. He lived in Hempstead County, AR, when he married his second wife (Jane Agnes Green) and had a large family there. I have never had a DNA test done, but I am contemplating doing so. I have been unable to make any connections to John William Stroud's lineage. It really bugs me. He was living in Lawrence County, TN, in 1850 with a wife named Mary, but afterwards moved to Arkansas where I come in to the picture through my grandmother Leola Jane Stroud Webb, my father Columbus Dee Webb, Jr.'s mother. Hope to hear from you. lindacollins3626

Did any of these Strouds go elsewhere in Canada -- specifically, Oxford Co., Ontario? What were their dates? I'd be VERY interested in learning about a John or James Elliot Stroud who was around Tillsonburg, Ont. and born about 1840.

Tom

Hi Rupert,

My Mom and Dad knew Gilbert and Marti (we as kids knew them as Uncle Gil and Auntie Marti). My Dad, James Thomson and Mom, Signe Smith Thomson. My Dad played the double bass in a band with Gil and my Mom used to sing with them sometimes. Our whole family performed with them several times in the Jo'burg area. If you e-mail me I can pass you onto my Mom to see what she knows of them now.

For the record, a descendant of Nathaniel B. Stroud, a probable son of Charles T. Stroud of New York and Cuyahoga Co. Ohio, has tested and has matched the DNA pattern for the William Stroud of Natick Massachusetts line.

Susan Milligan
Stroud/Strode Y-DNA Project Administrator
similligan@msn.com
