Re: Gilbert Stuart

I found a site on the Anthony Family which includes the Stuart's (Stewart). http://archive.org/stream/genealogyofantho00anth/genealogyof...

There is Gilbert Stuart, Sr. born in Perth, Scotland and moved to the colonies in 1746 and settled in Rhode Island. He married Elizabeth Anthony. One of their children is Gilbert Stuart, Jr. the famous artist.

Below is information regarding their children.

Children —
James Stuart, b. d. y.
Anne Stuart, b. Nov. 19, 1753, married Henry Newton.
Gilbert Stuart, Jr. b. December 3, 1755 d. July 9, 1828 married Charlotte Coates

This was written by the above Anne Stuart: "There were born 12 children, 4 are still living in 1876. My second brother, Charles, was a very fine landscape painter; he died at the age of 26. My sister Jane, I think, inherits a great deal of her father's genius."

So if you are talking about Gilbert Stuart, Jr. (artist) the above James Stuart would be his brother. If you're talking about Gilbert Stuart, Sr., James Stuart was his son.

But you said that Daniel Stuart was James Stuart's father. Since there is no middle name for the James Stuart I gave you, maybe James Everett Stuart was the brother of Gilbert Stuart, Sr.

I don't know the father's name of Gilbert Stuart, Sr.

Try googling these different names. You might come up with something.

Good Luck!

Hi Margaret: I have a portrait that has been passed down for generations that is to have been done by Gilbert Stuart, Jr. I'm attaching an article that was in the "Miami Herald" 09-07-1952. My father's dad (U.S. Collins) said it was given to me by my mother before she died in 1924. Her name was Mary Ellen Likely (Collins).

Her father was:

William C Likely
Birth15 Nov 1815inHuntingdon, Pennsylvania, United States
Death1 Jun 1896inNorwood, Mercer, Illinois, United States

Her mother was:
Nancy Agnes Ramsey
Birth1816inPennsylvania
Death1894

Nancy Agnes Ramsey's parents were:
James Ramsay
Agnes Stuart

I can't find any information on Agnes Stuart. If she is an authentic Stuart, she would need to be a daughter or granddaughter of Gilbert Stuart, Sr. or one of the brothers of Gilbert Stuart, Jr. (the artist).

If you have any information on her I sure would appreciate you letting me know.

This is my cousin's account on Ancestry.com. I'm using it too since we have so many ancestor's in common on my mothers side.

Thanks so much.

Antonia (Toni) Collins

Am looking for information on my husband's line. John W Stuart was born in Rush, IN 13 Mar 1837. He married Mallissa Hillis (1839-1888) in 1859 and later married Cynthia Wagner (1850-) in 1890. His parents were Joseph Stuart or Stewart (1791 in Kentucky or Ohio, died 1870 in Clinton Co, IN) and Priscilla Spurgeon (1794, Bourbon, KY - 1856 Rush, IN) line for both ends there. Any information would be greatly welcome.

Archibald Stuart

I have been searching for both spellings of Stewart and Stuart. Have both in my family. From time to time I find information that leads me to believe that there were mix ups on the spelling of the names and who belonged to which side of the family. I have a Archibald Stewart who died without legitimate issuses. Many nieces and nephews. This past fall I traveled to Kentucky, Tennessee, North and South Carolina to search for the Stuart clan.I was searching for my great, great, grandfather John Stuart and his wife's family. Her name was Elvira Jane Williams Stuart or Jane Elvira Williams Stuart. Returned home to find information on the history channel that gave me some other ideas of places to search.

My name is Ardell Lee Stewart.

HI There, Just found your post for 2009. I am researching this family of Stuart/Stewart as I am the Clerk for Goodland Township Lapeer County Michigan. We have an abandon Cemetery from the mid 1800's in our township. It is known as the Stuart Family Cemetery, even though the State
of Michigan has never had it on record. Please if you have found anything more on Archibald or Benjamin and families
please contact me. Benjamin Feilder and wife Delilah Whitaker are buried in our active Goodland Twp. Cemetery.
Our Historical Society as well as the Township are in the
process of rehabing the Stuart/Stewart Cemetery. Thanks in Advance for any help. Mavis

I've come to a dead end on my Stuart and Vincent families. I can go back to my G-G-Grandfather Hiram Stuart (b. 1799, MA) and his wife, Anna Marie Vincent (b. 1801, NY). My question is for those who have had a DNA test: will a DNA test for either be worth the money and what will it tell me? I am considering using Family Tree DNA. I have a pretty good idea of possible fathers for both but can not make the connection.

Thanks for any help.

Francis M. Stuart
Looking for Stuart family born as Goldsmiths in Scotland - John, Fred, Ivy, Ena

I am looking for my great grandfather F.C. Goldsmith. He had 4 children, John Herbert, Fred, Ena and Ivy. He was from Scotland, probably Tongue or Mill Port, Bute. He fought and died in the First World War. His wife remarried a gentelman with the last name of Stuart. The children eventually moved to Canada and assumed Stuart as their surnames although I don't think they were ever legally adopted by their step-father. John Herbert (Goldsmith) Stuart and Fred Stuart both fought in World War 2 in the Royal Canadian Military. John was a Sergeant Major. He married Audris Annette Bulmer before the war and lived in Toronto. They had 3 children together. He died in the 1970's and is buried in Toronto. Any info would be appreciated.

my father, duval stuart was florence barrett's 1st cousin. I am writing a book on the stuarts. It begins with the origin of the name and ends at the end of the civil war. i am getting reay to publish it and will soon be requesting interest in purchesing copies. I don't have the details yet. The book is very informative concerning our ansestors. Both Florence and my father descended from William Seaborn Stuart. I personally remember your uncle Stuart Cole from Van Alstyn Texas. He was quiet a character, as was your grandmother, Florence whom I also remember. Florence's mother, Sarah, died at our house when i was a teenager, in 1959. Florence visited often during Aunt Sarah's illness.
I look forward to hearing from you at email susantouchstone@gmail.com

last fall my wife (leigh) and i went back to edinburg ,north
dakota to see if we could find the little church that my
great-grandparents were married in. to our suprise it was
still there being used as a musem. while looking through
some old minutes found the notes of meetings back in the
1990's were my great, great grandfathers as he was the secretary. we also were directed to an old scottish cemetery where we found six headstones belonging to my
a couple of generation ago. it was very exciting, then the
other day i found an article in a iowan newspaper which
referred to my great, great grandfather (henry) death, which
was a note to his brother thomas stuart.
that note referanced henry's birth as markham village
ontario, canada. now i am interested in continuing to go back.

thank you
james stuart

Many thanks. I have this information, but my transcription of the original (poor) cursive writing made the family as:

HIRAM HEAPS 24
MARGARET (Stuart) HEAPS 24 - although other information suggests she was younger than Hiram by a year or two;
MARRIE STUART (4) - according to her birth cert, her actual name was "Marie" and she was born in 1906; no father was named unfortunately. Interestingly, my grandfather (her husband) always pronounced her name with the emphasis on the Mar- rather than the -ie. Perhaps her name was meant to be spelt Marrie - because that's how her family pronounced it - and the birth cert got it wrong.
DORIS MAY STUART - who migrated to Australia in 1925
AARON STUART - who died aged 1.

Seeking more information on Margaret Stuart (my great grandmother) who was born in 1888 in Belper, Derbyshire. All I have is that she married Hiram Heaps in 1907 and had two children, Doris May and Aaron; no further information after that.

Margarets daughter, Marie Stuart (my grandmother) was born in 1906 and remained with the Heaps' family, but retained her mother's maiden name. She migrated to Australia in 1923 (alone)!

Samuel Stuart of Codsall, Staffordshire, England. Died about 1826.

Samuel and his wife, Ann, were the parents of Frederick Stuart who founded the Stuart Bros. glassworks in Stourbridge, which later became Stuart Crystal. I believe Frederick (b1816) had 6 siblings - Edward, Charles, William, Samuel, John and Ann, all born in the period between 1813 and 1821. I have traced William, Frederick, Samuel and Ann on the 1841 census but have been unable to find anything on the others.

History of Stuart Crystal indicates that Frederick was an orphan by the time he was 11, which suggests a death date for Samuel of 1826/27, but I have no confirmation of this.

If anyone can throw any light on this, or do a look-up of parish records for Codsall to trace any of this any further I'd be extremely grateful!

Jackie Didymus

He is my grandfather - died in Dunoon in 1940. Married to Helen Gray (nee RUSSELL). Ships' Surveyor for Lloyds. My father, John Russell Thearle STUART, was their only child. Cannot find any record of his birth, although I believe it was in Govan, Glasgow in 1879. His father, my great grandfather, John STUART (sometimes spelt STEWART) was a shipyard manager in the Greenock area and lost his life on board the SS Pomeranian in a freak storm in 1893. If anyone is in any way linked to my STUART line, I'd love to hear from you. Rose MCARTHUR (nee STUART)

Stephan, please send me an invite to your Stuart family tree. I can fill in some info for my GM Emma Sytha Stuart Fitzgerald, daughter of Burton J. Stuart. I am very interested in what you have collected so far. Most of my research was lost in a fire in 2008, but I do have some info that might be interesting to you.
Thanks!
Martha Smith @Boooberry58@AOL.com
I am doing research on a Stuart family in Pittsburgh related to CSA JEB Stuart and his wife Floria Cooke. The Cookes are part of a riverboat family in Pittsburgh named Lewis and Clark.

I have talked to a few Stuarts and it seems General Stuart was directly related to Hunter Robert Stuart.

No one was more worried about CSA Gen JEB Stuart attacking Pittsburgh then Andrew Carnegie.
