Yes, I am aware that Kinky's father killed himself behind the family barn. I have often wondered if Kinky was the child who found him. I do have a copy of a newspaper story about the father's suicide. I also have newspaper reports about the deaths of Goldie & Kinky and their death certificates.

Goldie and John died on March 28, 1944, in Cody, Park, WY. Goldie was born Jan. 6, 1899, in Gross, Boyd, NE. John Harold Kuhns was born April 24, 1898, in PA, to John Curtis Kuhns (1860-1906) and Sarah Candice Corbett Kuhns (1864-1940). Were you aware that John's father, John Curtis, committed suicide?

Just an FYI on Bill Adams, the contact for Julia Claire Pate's book. Bill was a neighbor of my parents and died in the 1970s. I was able to find a copy a few years ago by putting it on a watch list at Abe Books until a copy turned up for sale.

As I read the info posted at One World Tree and what you have written, the Stubbs were indeed an interesting bunch! Goldie & Kinky Kuhns must have met up with the Stubbs' in Lusk. Kinky was from Pennsylvania and working the oil fields in the 1920's. Goldie was from Nebraska & South Dakota. She was in Lusk with her sister, Elsie. Goldie & Kinky had one child who died in 1923 at age 18 months. Later they lived in Cody. In 1944, Kinky shot Goldie in the chest with a rifle and then shot himself in the head. He died instantly, she died less than an hour later.

This info must be correct as it is the same as I have in my genealogy pages on this line. And yes, it was Bill who said he saw Sherman's Army march by when he was too young to do so and he did not live in the area of the march. He was west of it. Bartley, and Barbara lived in the Inman, Fayette County area. Bill was in and out of trouble with the law and Bud committed suicide. The girls married Backus, Veale, Richardson and Austin, and Taylor. Later,Jim brought up the Taylor nephews from TX to run the ranch and it is still owned by Taylor descendents. Hattie, niece to Jim, married Demic. Jim married when in his 60's and I was informed Lois ended up with one third of Jim's worth including WY, AR and KS wheat fields.

I found the following at OneWorldTree (no submitter name, so can't give proper credit):
ID: I00137
Name: James Zedok STUBBS
Sex: M
Birth: 1 FEB 1856 in Fayetteville, GA
Death: 17 JUN 1934 in Berryville, AR
Burial: Willowgrove Cemetery, Buffalo, Johnson Co, WY
Note:

Russ Taylor July 1989

Jim Stubbs came up the Texas Trail with cattle in the early 1880's. He probably made several trips and became a trail boss for the Keelines. Bud and Bill Stubbs also came to Wyoming with the Texas long horns. Being the oldest son of a conflict ridden family, Jim assumed a lot of responsibilities early on. When they finally quit the trail and the rest of the family came to Wyoming, they settled in the area of the Hat Creek stage station, twenty miles north of Lusk.

Jim bought the original Blue Creek Ranch holdings from the outlaws (principally George Currie according to Dad (Sandy Taylor.)) He expanded these holdings and did a lot to set up various members of the family up in business.

From Russ Taylor, May 1990

After Jim Stubbs put the ranch together at Blue Creek and had gotten fairly prosperous he started leasing it out and spending his winters in Arkansas. He would go down to Hot Springs and enjoy the hot mineral baths. From about 1905 to 1908, he had the place leased to Wm. B. Brock. In 1924, Henry Brock had it leased.

This is the way he met Lois Stevens. She would pay him a lot of attention and one day she told him how much she would like to see Yellowstone Park, but in her circumstances she'd probably never be able to. This tugged at Jim's heart strings so -- when summer came he offererd to take her and she was delighted. They took the train to Casper, picked up his car at Blue Creek and motored through the park.

When they had returned to Casper he tried to buy her train ticket back to Arkansas, but she sweetly refused. Pointing out that he had put her in a very compromising position; really he should marry her. Being a gentleman of the old school he had little choice so they were married. Some people were of the opinion that this was the first time Jim had done anything with out planning it all out in advance. His first fling at matrimony, he was sixty-two and it was 1918. Some of the family thought she had married Jim for his money ... maybe she had.

Loid didn't take to country living, even though it is thought that she took up a homestead to add to the ranch. Eventually, she manuvered Jim into returning to Arkansas where they lived at Berryville, up in the north west corner.

She had a neice, also named Lois Stevens, who took up a homestead in the canyon from Blue Creek but she never proved up on it. Sandy Taylor (my Dad) took up this relinquishment (there was already a small cabin there) where he and Mom married November 1, 1930. The sold it to Edd Taylor after proving up on it. Edd Taylor had bought Blue Creek from Jim Stubbs in 1926 after leasing it for a year or so.

Jim Stubbs was born near Fayetteville, GA; Feb. 1, 1856. It is likely that he is the one whe sat on the rail fence and watched Sherman's army march by. Mom had a great uncle that was in Sherman's army. This was a story that Bill Stubbs in later years appropriated but he wasn't born until Dec. 8, 1865 -- not just unlikely but impossible.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
from "The Stubbs Clan of the Hole in the Wall" by Thelma Gatchell Condit in Annals of Wyoming V.34 Issue 1 1962 pgs 95-111.

"Jim was a six-footer and rather heavy set, very slow motioned and seemingly easy going, but had an air of authority about him that gained him respect wherever he went. He had a good business head on his shoulders and knew all along 'where he was going and what he would do with his life.' He had a way of always chuckling to himself as he went about his work, a likeable, intimate sort of habit that inspired confidence and good will. Bud and him were both good reliable men, 'as honorable and good men as could be in those times when everything was a battle, when a mad had to fight for everything he got, when every bloomin' thing was aa struggle and hard work, when both nature and people made lots of trouble.' They saved their money; they didn't throw it around, as soon as it was earned in loose living like so many did ... Bud and Jum felt a sense of responsibility toward their family. There was always some of them needing something."

Father: Bartley Jefferson STUBBS b: 24 SEP 1829 in Atlanta, GA
Mother: Barbara Elizabeth AVEREA b: 20 AUG 1831 in Fayetteville, GA

Marriage 1 Lois STEVENS b: WFT Est. 1854-1900

Married: 1918 in Casper, WY

The Stubbs DNA Project has a test result for a descendant of Moiya’s 4GGrandfather Jesse Stubbs (S-21 in “Stubbs Group 1”)
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/stubbs/results

Jesse’s grandfather Thomas Stubbs 1695-1738 of NC, is a close match to a descendant of “S-20” a descendant of Richard Stubbs, d ca 1676 Hull MA. The NC and MA Stubbs are, in turn, close DNA matches to a descendant of Mathew Stubbs b ca 1731 in Davenham, Cheshire, England. This suggests the ancestry of both the MA Stubbs and NC Stubbs may have a common origin in Cheshire, England.

The Group 1 “Cheshire” Stubbs, in turn, have a distant relationship to the Stubbs in “Stubbs Group 2”. This latter Group 2 are descended from
William Stubbs d 1550 Gloucestershire, England.

Both of these groups are currently in the same ancestral Haplogroup, R-U106, and are both in the subgroup which is negative for another SNP marker, L48.

Research continues, as additional, more recent, SNP markers are discovered which further refine haplogroup R-U106 into more recent subgroups, to see if the common ancestor of Stubbs Groups 1 & 2 predates the adoption of surnames (more than 1000 years ago) or if their common ancestor is more recent, and may, possibly, have carried the Stubbe/Stubbs surname.

One calculated estimate, of the most recent common ancestor of the two Stubbs groups, (based on the differences in values of DNA STR markers), suggests a possible common ancestor about 1000-1200 years ago.

Robert Stubbs
Administrator Stubbs DNA Project

Several of the children ended up in Missouri. Aaron is the brother of my 4GGrandfather, Jesse Stubbs.
Moiya Stubbs

There is some information about George Stubbs marrying Metapere Wai-punahau on my cousins ancestry page, it is a great resource for that particular line. I'm still not sure how this works but if you look up Amokura Greenland, she may be able to help you. I would really really love to see a picture of him. Do you have one? He is my GGGG Grandfather. Any info about his life would be awesome. Thank Kiri Eriwata

Gretal,

Susan Wade Stubbs is the daughter of Wade Stubbs and Mary "Anna" Ward.

ID: I1836
Name: Robert W. Darrell Captain
Surname: Darrell
Given Name: Robert W.
Suffix: Captain
Sex: M
Death: 1876 1
Reference Number: 277
_UID: D54FB64A499F1842B0E2DFC27861468F47FA 1
Change Date: 5 Oct 2008 at 21:54:18

Marriage 1 Susan Wade Stubbs b: 1835

Married: 1852 in Wades Green, Caicos 1

Children

Agnes Darrell b: 1853
William Wade Darrell b: 1855
Edna Darrell b: 1865
Florence Darrell b: 1869
Edith Darrell b: 1874

Edna Darrel had the given name of Augusta Edna Darrell. She was my great grandmother. She married Dennis Manuel her cousin who was the son of William A Manuel and Sarah Alice Stubbs.

I do not have any information on the Durham line.

The 1900 U.S. Census shows
Aug. Manuel living with her husband Dennis their sons Norman b. 1890 and Clarence b. 1898. Not mentioned of course was that Augusta aka Edna as some list her was pregnant with a daughter Edna Susan Manuel who would be born in June 1900, she married Berwin A. Taylor. They lived in Philadelphia and then Broomall, PA. Additional family members were listed Sus. Darrell age 63 mother in law to Dennis Manuel. Florence Darrell age 28 and Edith Darrell age 23 both sisters in law of Dennis Manuel. All of the home in Philadelphia in 1900.

One last note the Manuel surname was originally Manwell. Joseph Antonio Manuel/Manwell immigrated to Turks & Caicos late 1808 or early 1809. He died shortly after arrival. Leaving his young children orphans. The christening record for his grand father was transcribed as Mannell, however the written document is difficult to read and if you change the spelling to Manwell you then have the more traditional English spelling. Manwell would be written Manuel by some in the 1700/1800s. My grand parents and mother pronounced it Manual - go figure.

Still trying to figure out exactly who Robert Darrell was.

I hope that helps some out there.

Susan Wade Stubbs Darrell shows up in the 1910 U.S. Census as Susan W Darrell now living with her daughter Florence Darrell Whitehead who has married James Whitehead between 1900 and 1907 (daughter born to them in 1907 named Florence Whitehead).

Thank you for this sad, but very interesting information. The Iowa Cold Cases website is great, would be fantastic if other states would follow suit. Whether they would ever get any solid clues to the older cases would be nothing short of a miracle, but certainly is refreshing to see the victims remembered instead of the villians for a change.

Thanks again!

Looking for any info on the descendents of Ruth Stubbs and Benjamin Titsworth.

m. 1 Benjamin Titsworth/Tittsworth 1818 Pope Co, IL
He apparently died pre 1828

m2. John Morrison 1828 Pope Co, IL

I found John Morrison on the 1830 census of Pope Co, Il and they have 6 children after only 2 years of marriage. So I am assuming some of them are hers by her first husband, Ben Titsworth.

In 1830 they had 2 sons 5-9 yrs old, a daughter 5-9yrs old and a daughter 10-14yrs old.....these 4 must be Titsworth children...
.... but I cannot find them in 1850. They would range in age in 1850 from 25-34....so possibly no longer living at home with parents.

The other 2 children (in 1830) are a boy and a girl 0-4 yrs old...if either or both of these are 2 or under they would be Morrisons.....if they are 3 or 4 they are probably Titsworths also.

Anyway I could not locate John or Ruth Morrison and family in Illinois in 1850....

If these names sound familiar would appreciate any help
Thanks
Sarah Tittsworth
dbworth01@yahoo.com
Adaline Augusta Frith, wife of Capt. William Stubbs ending in Philadelphia. Adaline is also buried at Fernwood Cemetery of which I have no records yet. That is my next search and also Laurel Hillwhere others were moved to back in the 1950's.

Sorry for the delay, but I research every day, have 8 and working on a ninth tree as we speak, get emails weekly.
Fernwood Cemetery is in Philadelphia PA. I have a picture of it if you would like I could email or exchange information with you on Stubs/Durham connection if you would like to send your email. William Wade married Evaline Durham 1899. Evaline had a sister named Frances M. Durham, my great grandmother lived with them. I am trying to find information on Frances b. in Turk Islands 1856. I notice you have a Susan Durham b 1830 and wonder if they are related somehow. I have been unable to find anything on this side or get info from Turks. I also have Durham info. Any information would be so appreciated. Frances daughter, my grandmother lived in Hamilton Bermuda. I have tree online but is marked as private.

Hi, not sure if this will help you or not but this is about Martha's brother Robert. It does give some biographical information that may give you a lead or something. It's off of the website www.iowacoldcases.org sources of where the site got the information is listed on the bottom.

Robert Wadsworth Stubbs
Homicide

Robert Wadsworth Stubbs
36 YOA
Polk City, IA
Polk County
April 15, 1882
Case summary by Nancy Bowers

In the 19th century, Polk City was an important town along the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, competing successfully with Des Moines in commerce and very nearly becoming the state capitol.

Polk City was settled in the mid-1840s but not incorporated as a town until 1876.

Six years later, its 36-year-old Mayor — Robert Wadsworth Stubbs — was murdered.

Stubbs was not only the town’s highest elected official but also co-owner of one its largest businesses, the mulling firm of Eggleston & Stubbs.

Robert Stubbs non 165 Courtesy photo Ancestry.com
Polk City Mayor Robert Wadsworth Stubbs was murdered by intruders on April 15, 1882.

He served as Treasurer of the school district and of the Odd Fellows Lodge as well.

Because of his business and civic responsibilities, Stubbs was in charge of a great deal of money.

Because there was no bank in Polk City, Stubbs kept most of the funds in his charge at home, taking amounts to a Des Moines bank periodically.

Naturally, that quantity of money might attract the attention of robbers.

In fact, Stubbs may have started taking his business receipts home in the summer of 1881 after thieves entered his mulling firm, blew open a safe there, and took its contents.
The Murder

On the night of Friday, April 15, 1882, Robert Stubbs, his wife, and their four children had retired for the night.

Robert and Rachel Stubbs — who was seven months pregnant with the couple’s fifth child — slept on the second floor of their home in a room at the top of the stairs.

During the night, two men entered the house by a rear first-floor window, passed through the kitchen, dining room and sitting rooms, and started up the stairs in the hallway.

Rachel Stubbs heard them on the steps and woke Robert, who sat up in bed and called out to the intruders, asking what they wanted.

A voice yelled profanities and commanded, “Lie down, or you will be shot.”

Stubbs shouted for them to leave his house and got out of bed. Just then, one of the men opened the slide on a dark-lantern and shone a beam onto Stubbs. Almost simultaneously, a pistol was fired and a bullet struck Stubbs in the chest.

He staggered to the head of the stairs as the men ran out. Then he swayed and fell down the steps.

By then, the intruders had run out the front door and mounted horses which were tied near the front gate. They disappeared into the night.

Although the motive for the intrusion seemed to be robbery, no money was taken. In fact, nearly $7,000 was later located in the house by authorities.
Great Excitement, No Resolution

What newspapers termed “great excitement” followed the murder of Mayor Stubbs in and around Polk City.

Iowa Governor Buren Robinson Sherman offered a $500 reward, and the Polk City Odd Fellows put up another $500 for information leading to the killers.

Several posses were formed and numerous suspects were brought in at various times for questioning. Lynch mobs formed and some of the suspects were at the point of being hanged before reason prevailed in the agitated crowds.

W.A. Cline and Charles Wilcox were arrested for “complicity” in the murder. However, Cline was shot and killed by his brother-in-law while out on bail and Wilcox was tried and acquitted.

No one else was charged with the murder of Robert W. Stubbs.
The Life of Robert W. Stubbs

Robert Wadsworth Stubbs was born July 21, 1845 in Belpre, Ohio, to Ruth Wadsworth and Jason Stubbs. He had four brothers — Silas, George H., Iddo Jason, and Benjamin M. — and five sisters: Mary E. Stubbs, Martha Ellen Stubbs Shetterly, Sarah Ann Stubbs Glenn, Dolly Marie Stubbs Davis, and Isadora Hannah Stubbs McKeehan.

Rachel Stubbs Courtesy photo Ancestry.com
Rachel Terrell Stubbs

On June 24, 1870 in Polk City, he married Rachel Katherine Terrell and they had four children: Fredrick Jason Stubbs, Della B. Stubbs (Schuetz), Minnie Ruth Stubbs (Horner), and Silas Arthur Stubbs.

At the time of Stubbs’s death, the children ranged in ages from 6 to 11. Two months after his murder, Rachel gave birth to Robert E. Stubbs, who died five months later.

Robert Stubbs was buried in the Polk City Cemetery.

The Jackson Sentinel wrote of the murdered man, “Stubbs was a man of noble qualities, and universally esteemed.”
Information Needed

Questions and information about the unsolved 1882 murder of Robert W. Stubbs should be directed to the Polk City Police Department at 515-984-6233, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office at 515-286-3306, or Iowa Cold Cases through the Contact form.
Sources

Annals Of Polk County, Iowa And City Of Des Moines, 1888.
Cedar Rapids Times, May 4, 1882.
“General News,” Burlington Daily Hawk-Eye, April 22, 1882.
“Goings-on In Iowa,” Waterloo Courier, May 31, 1882.
“Iowa Items,” Jackson Sentinel, April 27, 1882.
Sumner Gazette, July 27, 1882.
Waterloo Courier, April 19, 1882.
“West and South,” Iowa Liberal, April 26, 1882.
These photos were in a photo album belonging to my grandmother's half sister, Goldie Patterson Kuhns. Does anyone recognize "Mr. & Mrs. Stubbs"? In the group photo, Mr. Stubbs is second from right, Mrs. Stubbs is fourth from right, Goldie Kuhns is second from left and her husband John "Kinky" Kuhns is third from left. Goldie & Kinky lived near Casper in the early to mid 1920's when these photos were taken. Kinky worked in the oil fields. Any help is appreciated.

I am looking for any information on George Stubbs who was a whaler in New Zealand in the 1830's. He was born approx 1814 but have no information other than it could have been in Australia or the United States. Members of our family have been searching for his line for many years with no luck. He married Metapere Te waipunahau and had children here in NZ. Or does anyone have any information on where I might find records from the ships that brought the whalers here to NZ from either of these countries? Any information would be welcomed :)

Looking for info on Aaron Stubbs, b. around 1780. From Tyrrell/Washington counties in NC. Died before 1850. He married an Africa (Affa/Afra) Airs and they had one son I know of, Aaron Stubbs Jr b. around 1820. His wife was Frances LNU. In the 1850 census it has Aaron Jr., Frances, and Affa listed with my great-great-great grandfather RJ Airs. Both Aaron and RJ are listed as mariners. I am assuming Affa may be RJ's aunt but am not sure.

MK
