"My" Stuchburys go back to a William Stuchbury who was born c.1786, apparently in Cheshunt (Hertfordshire) and who married Ann Attfield, my great (x2) great-aunt, at St Botolph Without Aldersgate, London, on 28.2.1808. William was a shoemaker, and died at Barnet in 1860. Ann's dates were 1787-1851, and they had at least 11 children, all of whom were born at Whetstone, Friern Barnet or Finchley. I've never been able to trace William Stuchbury's ancestors, but Cheshunt is not too far from Northants. Does any of this ring any bells?
Best wishes, John
I am interested in results on all related names. My line descends from James Mathew Stuchbury b6,3,1836, Buckinghamshire england, died 1918 Wichita ks. He had 3 sons, but no grandsons from them. My greatgrand mother Kate Stuchbury married a Hedrick, then my grandmother, my father, myself, my son. So that is not a direct male line. Sorry. The other daughters of James had girls they either died young, had some boys and girls, or girls with no children. Alvin Stuchbury lived in Wicita Ks had 3 girls, one of which had children ,marring Glen Martin in Wichita. There was a Glen Jr. but can't find the list.

It is an ongoing project, and we are testing male descendants with the Stokesbury (and any varient spelling such as Stotesbury, Stooksbury, Stuchbury, Stokenbury, etc.). We have had 9 participants so far, and have already identified two distinct, unrelated surname lines; one in England and one in the US.

For details on the project, go to:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/stokesburyDNAproject/

If you are interested in receiving copies of the briefings I've prepared after new test results came in, let me know and I'll send you the briefings to date, and put you on the list to receive future updates.

What is your direct ancestry? We have not had a participant from the Stuchbury line; do you have a direct male descendant who could be tested? It would shed light on whether the Stuchbury and Stokesbury (or Stotesbury) surnames are related and when they diverged. Contact me offlist and we can talk further.

Linda Stokesbury Brennan
Project Administrator

I did some looking up, and found the following.

I have found four Ephraim Stutchbury's, but only one was born 1823.

The following is what I think is the right Ephraim.

Ephraim Stuchbury born 1823 in England. He was Christened 14th July 1833 at Hillesden. Ephraim was son of Samuel Stutchbury and Martha?

I can't help with much Australian information, as I live in South Australia and only have access to those records.

I wish you well in your search.

Regards

Heather
in a lovely balmy evening
in Adelaide

Hi,

I have an ancestor Ann Attfield who married William Stuchbury (or Stutchbury) on 28.2.1808 at St Botolph Without Aldersgate, London. It's recorded in the Pallott Marriage Index. They are also mentioned in the Will of Ann's father Richard Attfield who died in 1825, i.e. they were still alive at that time. Can't trace them any further though.

Does this ring any bells for you? The Attfields lived in Barnet, but other parts of the family did settle in Northants.

Best wishes
John Attfield

Looking for information on a Bertram Henry Stuchbury. He was probably born about 1880 - Lived in Nebraska in 1920 and married a Josephine Prohaska Dietrich. He left there prior to the birth of his daughter in 1922 to look for work - supposedly in California. He wrote to his family one time and sent money. They never heard from him again. They thought he possibly had died, however, there is evidence that he did not die until 1937. He remarried (never divorced Josephine that we know of) and had two more children, a son and a daughter. Have no idea where they lived or when they were born - I think he was from Australia, or possibly England. His daughter would like to get more information about him and his life and where he is buried.
