Josephine Hardwick Vielle was my great great grandmother and Thomas Hardwick would have been my great great great grandfather. Josephine was left orphaned as a very young child when her mother died during childbirth, her father Thomas Hardwick sent her to the St Ignatius Mission until she was about 17yrs of age, he sent her money upon her release from the mission school, she went back to the Blackfeet Reservation where she met her husband Thomas Vielle. The story I was told, is he sent a scout to find her the Scout eventually found her but Hardwick had passed.

For some unexplained reason, I was not able to pull up the data from the link which you provided; however, I checked through some documents which I have for Sumter County, SC and can make the following comments regarding Red/Reddick Howell and wife Comfort Sullivan Howell:

Based on the ages given in census records for the children of Comfort and Reddick Howell, they likely married after 1820 and before 1830. If that deduction is correct, Reddick would not be married to Comfort Sullivan for the 1820 Census and thus the Red Howell listed in the 1820 Sumter, SC Census would not be the household of Comfort Sullivan and Reddick Howell however, this Red Howell could be our Reddick Howell unmarried and as the son and administrator for his deceased father is listed as the head of the household for the 1820 SC Census.

The Dubose researcher stated that Reddick Howell's father was Stephen Howell and that he died March 1820. If that is correct then Stephen Howell would not be living at the time of the 1820 census and this would explain why Red Howell who was son and administrator of Stephen Howell deceased in 1820 was listed in the census as the head of the household with 4 other males and 2 females.

The 1820 Sumter, SC Red Howell entry shows 5 males and 2 females. Two of the males are 16-25 years old and 3 males are 26-44 years old. This Red Howell is listed 18 entries from our Johnson Sullivan who was listed as "Johnson Salivant" on this page.

I do not have the 1830 census for the Thomas Howell or the TR Howell; therefore cannot comment. If the ages of the oldest male and female fit with Comfort and Reddick Howell and with their children's birth years, then, I would concluded that this is our family. Several other bits of data add to this conclusion........The elder Comfort Sullivan and her daughters including the younger Comfort Sullivan were in NC for the 1820 Census.........that is a female was in her household that was the same age as our younger Comfort Sullivan. By 1830 Comfort Sullivan the elder was listed alone in her household in Sumter, SC. This fits with Comfort the younger being married before 1830 and thus in her husband's household.

Reddick Howell's Montgomery County Estate records named a son Thomas B Howell and I think this is likely Thomas Bryant Howell. Thomas B Howell was deceased by 1859. We have two of the SC Howell given names appearing in the names of Reddick Howell's children.

The data clues that we have point to this Reddick Howell family as our Reddick Howell who married Comfort Sullivan; however, we need more concrete proof. We need documents. The first document that is needed is the will or the estate of Stephen Howell and then data from all of the his census records so that his son Reddick can be placed as having been born in NC and in the same age range as our Reddick.

I know this isn't much help but it is all that I have at this time.

thanks for connecting Terry. I'll share whatever I can as well. My mother Virginia is the daughter of Virgil Sullivan, son of Albert Sullivan, so of Gilson Sullivan. Virgil Sullivan died very young in Kansas City...about 1934. My mother was raised in part by her Uncle Bill Sullivan. My guess is that he was named after your great great grandfather and Albert's brother, Bill. Uncle Bill lived in Alva,Oklahoma. He was a WWI veteran and was gassed during the war. Ran a small grocery store in OK. I met him a couple of times as a small boy.

Hello Al,
I am also a great, great grandson of Gilson, but my great grandfather was one of Albert Notley's brothers James H. James and wife Amanda moved from Miller County to Laclede County to Kansas City. They are buried about 10 mins north of where I live now. My father was Ward Sullivan, son of Granville Sullivan, son of James H Sullivan. I have also been looking for Roberts parents. Like Morgan said, things do get pretty vague. I am also happy to share anything I find out, most of my pictures are only from Amanda and newer. Wish I could find one of James H. The headstones at Sullivan cemetery are now on find a grave.com. An unrelated lady up in Montana posted them one day last winter. I convinced her to turn the memorials over to me a family member.-Terry

Al,

This is Morgan Pope. As far as I am aware no one has been able to trace Robert Sullivan's ancestry. We can trace his wife Rebecca Sidebottom back quite a ways, but nothing on Robert other than we know where they are buried near Ulman, Missouri. Terry Sullivan, Karen Smith and I met this spring at the cemetery and shared more information, but nothing available about Robert. Lots of Robert Sullivans in that time frame. Welcome, I'm happy to share anything I have with you. My great, great grandfather was Taylor Farrow Sullivan.

Hello Howell Cousin,

I have pulled this from the DuBose/Howell researcher Betty Howell of Arkansas. I don't understand alot of the indexing but this is part of the 300 plus pages of documentation.

Would this fit with Comfort marrying this particular Reddick?

Dear Pat,

Thank you so much for responding so quickly! I literally just started working on my tree yesterday, but it should be public so that you can view what I have so far.

It's at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/41659538/family?fpid=19657761... .

If you can't see it, just let me know, and I'll get the information to you. I had mostly been working on trying to get information on family a ways back, but I went in and updated the stuff on my mom, her marriages, and children.

I also grabbed some photos of both her and my grandmother that I'll upload as well. I still need to update the kids and marriages of my sisters too.

I don't have this in place yet, but the first ancestor that I know of in the U.S. from my grandmother's family was Nicholas Strasbach from the Principality of Salm, Saulxures in 1736. If you look up the "seven families of the Princess Augusta" (http://noel.mcn.org/location.htm), there is quite a bit of information there. At any rate, it was just a few generations later that the name got changed to Trosper -- in Tennessee, I believe. You'll see that in the family tree from my great-great-grandmother. I'm not sure if you are interested in that or not, but I thought I'd add it if so.

Let me know if you have any other questions; I can't tell you how exciting it was to see someone looking for my mom and to also have the opportunity to learn about my grandfather. I'm not sure if the information that I have down in the tree for him is correct; I was just kind of guessing as I was finding hints.

It is also nice to meet you as well!

Best regards,
Schannon (Joy Hester in the tree)
Hi there,

I know you asked this question a while back, but I just saw it. Martha was my mother. She was born March 16, 1942, and later moved to Hopkinsville, KY. She died on April 22, 2004. I can also give you information on her marriages and other children, if you'd like.

I would love to know more about my grandfather and his family. I think his name was James or maybe Jamie and that his father's name was maybe started with an O.

Best regards,
Schannon (Joy)

Hi Rose,
I realise I am entering this conversation more than three years too late but I think I can add a little bit to this story too as I beleive my grandfather was the eldest of the three sons from Julia O'Sullivans first marriage. I have dates of birth for him (Jeremiah O'Callaghan) and his brothers and I know that they lived on the farm in Curraheen. If you are still searching, get in touch as I'd love to swap what information there is.

Best wishes,

Claire

Hello. I am a Filipino, born and raised here in The Philippines to Filipino parents. I am a male, 20 years old, and just finished my Bachelor's degree in Nursing. It is quite unclear for me where my surname "Sullivan" really came from. My grandfather used to say that his grandfather is an Irish. I absolutely do not look like from the west, and neither does my parents and my siblings... but we have this feeling and strong emotional connection to white people like as if we are part of them.

I'm looking for information on Thomas Edgar Sullivan, b. 1907 in Maine, d. 30 May 1959. John L. Sullivan and Josephine Pardue were his parents.

He was married to Lillian Witham and had two daughters Arlene and Carolyn. I'm looking for information on their half-brother who was in the Navy. Maybe the other mother's name was Ruth?

Thanks,

Ryan

John Sullivan, Ohio>Ca, Died 1/1/1900, Sonora, Ca

TUOLUMNE COUNTY.

Banner, Sonora, January 13th. At 8 o'clock Monday evening, January Ist, John Sullivan left Algerine for his home, distant one-half mile. At the time there was a tempestuous storm of wind and rain and tho night was as black as the Imp of Satan is claimed to be. In traveling the trail he, it is supposed, became bewildered, lost his course and fell into an old mining shaft. The hole contained twenty feet of water, and in it Sullivan met death. Next morning searchers hunted the hills and brush for the missing man. Nowhere could the disappearing man be found. The seeking for Sullivan was kept up through the week and on Saturday, at noon, the body was discovered in tho shaft. The funeral services were held Sunday and burial was in the Odd Fellows' Cemetery. Deceased was forty-four years of age and a native of Ohio.

Amador Ledger, Volume 1900, Number 19, 19 January 1900

Re: SULLIVANs in Oklahoma

My father was born in 1927 in Blackwell Oklahoma. After he died at the age of 68, his aunt told me that he had been adopted from the Whitaker Orphanage in Pryor at the age of 4 months. She said his birth name was Sullivan and he was the youngest of 5 Sullivan siblings who were also at the orphanage. Any information would be appreciated.
