Hello Wendy,
I do not know what sources you have checked, but it may be worth looking for an obituary in the local newspapers, and also newspapers which covered entertainers etc, as they may have a more detailed biography. His death certificate should say if an inquest was held, and you may also find a report of that in the papers.

You may find something in the Fairground & Circus Archives at Sheffield University.

http://www.shef.ac.uk/nfa/index.php

Also the British Library Newspaper collection.

http://www.bl.uk/collections/newspapers.html

There is also a Rootsweb circus folk mailing list

http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Occupations/CIRCUS-FOL...

You did not give any dates, but have you tracked the family in the censuses - 1901 and 1881 are on line and others are available on Ancestry.

Regards,

Dear Hugh

Thank you very much for your time, much appreciated

Yes, Grenville was my Grandfather and Gerald my Great Uncle with Henrietta Jones being their Mother. Unfortunately, cannot "get" to James Sulphur my Great Grandfather.

Once again, thank you

Wendy Sulphur

Wendy,
I don't know if it's any use, but the only SULPHUR entries in the GRO index of births, marriages and deaths between 1866 and 1920 appear to be the following:

Birth of Sulphur, Gerald Oscar H, June 1/4 1910, Corwen, Vol.11b, page 341.
Birth of Sulphur, Grenville C., (mother maiden name Jones), Dec 1/4 1912, Corwen, Vol 11b, Page 593.

Member of very small family trying very hard to uncover her family history!

We know of a Spanish American connection! My Great Grandfather, Mr James Lavell/e Sulphur was a Trapeze artist who died whilst performing in Scotland. Prior to that, he married Miss Henrietta Jones from Llangollen, a midwife who rode a motorbike. Following on from her Husband's death, Henrietta then married Captain Bowering (possibly from Weymouth)

Any info would be greatly received.

Regards

Wendy

Dear Helen

Thank you very much for your reply and helpful hints. I have indeed tried various circus sites, newspaper archives, etc, however, to no avail.

My family is very small which makes it so very difficult to get hold of exact information. I'm guessing that James Sulphur was born between 1880 - 1890 and other than, the fact he was a Spanish American trapeze artist and may of used his middle name (Lavelle) as a stage name...I know very little else.

Thanks again

Wendy Sulphur

Family rumours of immigration from America to England circa 1900. I am interested in any spellings of the above uncommon surname in England.
