Hello, i know this is a long time in reply to your post 2000 i was surfing the net and stumbled upon Ancestry.com and the research you have done regarding the Summerhill surname, my late father was called Joseph Thomas Summerhill and our family though quite small in numbers all reside in the North of England, do you have any information from the UK?

Regards,

Peter

Aletha, I found your web page to be most helpful. I have really enjoyed the information and pictures you have put together. I have been doing some research for my brother-in-law, Jim (James) Summerhill, his father was Ruben Horace Summerhill born 8 Apr 1910. I found a book published on Martha Jane Marbury's line. She was married to William Clinton Summerhill. Also I found a book published on the Spooner line. Rebecca Spooner was married to Joseph John Frederick Floyd. I have a lot of information on the Waltman line also. If you don't have this information, I will be glad to share it with you. Do you live in Arkansas? Looking forward to hearing from you. My e-mail address is candybow@comcast.net if you would prefer to contact me that way. Thank you for all your hard work.
Re: ila oleta summerhill

If Ila O. Summerhill was born in Attala Co, MS around 1914, then I have her ancestry. In the 1920 Attala Co, MS Census, Ila O is listed as the six year old daughter of Sam M. & Lucy E. Summerhill. Ila's father, Samuel Mitchel Summerhill, is the son of James Washington Summerhill and his second wife, Nancy.

Saml M. Summerhil is listed as the one year old son of this couple in the 1880 Attala Co, MS Census.

Samuel's father, James Washington Summerhill (b. 1824 NC), is the son of James & Demaris Summerhill of Rutherford Co, NC (who moved to Cobb Co, GA).

Let me know if any of this requires further explanation.

Stan Bevers

Hi,
I have been tracing my Summerhill family and have a James Summerhill, who was married to a Sarah Trotman in Mangotsfield. He was born 1785 at Frampton-on-Severn, one of of 8 children to stephen Summerhill and sarah Cratchley, they wee married 1778 at Slimbridge, Glos.
There children were initially born in Frampton and then later in Saul. Unfortunately, do know much about Stephen and sarah, yet!!!
The Summerhills, seem to have moved on to Wednesbury & Dudley,(Wolverhampton), before my branch later moved to Scotland, some came back to wednesbury, but others remained in Glasgow.

Hi, I am J T Summerill. My great great grandfather was Samuel Summerhill, born in Mangotsfield in either 1832 (1901 census online) or 30 October 1831 (IGI index). He was living in Mangotsfield in 1851 (census) but by 1859 he was living in Birmingham, England, where he married Caroline Rogers (Ancestry database).

He had a brother called Jabez, born 1834, (IGI) who also moved to Birmingham. He married Selina Brain.

My great great great grandfather was another Samuel, born 24 January 1802, in Siston. He married Mary Pearce. My great great great great grandparents were John Summerill and Joyce.

Variant spellings are Summerill and Summerell.

Can anyone give me more information about this line of Summerills, either when they were living in Gloucestershire or in Birmingham. I'd also welcome information about other branches.

Thanks for your help.

He was born on Nov 14, 1830, maybe in North Carolina, and died Mar 2, 1906 in Rising Star, Tx. Had one or two sisters and a brother that never married. Wylie married Emily Torrance and their children were Frank, Kinyon, Laura, Thomas H and Mittie D. They lived some in Arkansas and Wylie was in the Civil War.

Hikingjohn@aol.com
My mother still lives in Old Forge,PA and we visit regularly...I have lived most of my life in WA State and have found it difficult to research my Cooper side...my aunt Thelma has little knowlwdge of her Cooper history because they didn't talk much about it...My father did not know much about the early Coopers and he passed away almost thirty years ago and I was not really interested at that time...now that I have plenty of time for personal interests I feel I may have made the search so much more difficult....John Lester Cooper

Hello, Lanelle
Nice name you have. -
I didn't think I would get any replies; especially when I posted to the first listing well after it was on the message board. I hope we are connected somehow! how thrilling would that be.
I ending up finding a long lost friend after 15 years by way of the internet.

Anyway.......
I'm new to all of this but my brother Eric has done a little bit of history awhile back. I'll have to dig that up soon.

I know that my grandfather had 2
brothers. I think you have a sister named Cindy if I'm
not mistaken. Let me know if this is correct.

Thanks

Hello,

I'm not sure if I'll be too much help right now. I'm just starting to investigate into my father's line.
But here's what I know for sure ( I'll get b/d dates from my brother soon ; he was looking into our tree awhile back and I'm sure he'll be helping if he can. )
I am one of 3 siblings born to Vera L. Nafus married to Lester Eric Summerhill who has/had a brother Bill/Willaim Summerhill who lived somewhere in upstate PA. ( My mom's family is from Dalton,Pa. We used to visit my dad's family nearby (I believe) when we went to my Grandma's.
I know Dad's brother had a son named Bill Jr. I don't know if he had any siblings.
Hope I helped and I will find out more from my brother soon.
Pam
Woodlandzooacre@aol.com
I believe that "Melton" is a misspelling of "Milton". My husband, Kelley Summerhill, is the son of Milton Summerhill and Jimolee Kelley Summerhill. Jimolee's brother was named John Kelley. They were from North Little Rock where my husband was born.

I was surfing around the web for england, and found this site. I come from a long line of Summerhill's dating back to 1610 when Joseph Summerhill landed in Va,USA. I can't find more on this person or his desendents until the late 1700's. I was told by my folks that he was from England. Anyone have more info on that? Do we still have namesake in England? We here would like to know, as we going to England in December 2000.
Thank's for any infomation.
Robert Joseph Summerhill III
8/10/51 Fort Meade, Maryland
now in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Joseph Summerhill

My relatives were from VA as was Joseph, and the clan moved upward to Maryland and then to Pa. where they still own a mountain top and have been there for many years. There is a geneolgy library here in Albuquerque that has a saling manafest that shows a Joseph Summerhill landing in Va. with no family with him. I found this quite by chance and asked my Mother who was still alive if that was the Joseph Summerhill I have my name sake from. She said yes it was and was there any more info on him or his kids. I have looked for many years since then for any info on the Summerhill's and found a gap from the early 1700's to late 1700's and was told that the British had burned alot of records in Va and Md. I have seen two books on the Summerhill tree and NONE of them show any of my family at all. I have photo's and glass plate negs that I have printed up that are dated 1860's and a copy of a Bible fly-leaf that dates 80 years earler than that.
All of the men in my family have a first name of Robert,Walter or Joseph. Also every male Summerhill has been a Military man and has always been so as I was told by my Grand father who died in 1955. His first name was Robert also. I am the III for Robert Joseph. My Uncle was Walter, but used Ralf to P.O my Grandfather after he was arrested for Bootlegging.(1928 or so) I myself have no children, due to Viet Nam. I was the last living Maryland Summerhill, with some of the Pa Summerhill's moving into Baltimore countyin the 80's . I have met with these pepole and been to the mountain, good pepole to know.
My father was Robert Joseph Summerhill born Cleveland, Oh in 1914 and married my Mother Evelyn Ruth Kramme born 1917.
Did you know that a Joseph Summerhill was the lead trumpet player for Susa's Band, and had his wedding march written by Susa? He was gassed in WW1 and commited suicide soon after that. The March is still in the Summerhill family, in Ca. My first cos.
got to go now.
Rob.

Don't know if this will help or not, but my husband is Robert Joseph Summerhill, son of Robert Summerhill & Evelyn Ruth Kramme.

My husband's father was born 23 Sept 1915 in Cleveland, OH from the marriage of Robert Summerhill and Margaret Slodyczko (possibly Slodyczka). He died in Fayetteville, NC in 1988. I only know of his having one brother, Ralph, who lived, married, and died in Chicago and its vicinity. I believe that he has children there. I did not have a chance to talk to either of these men before their deaths.

My husband's grandfather was Robert Summerhill, the son of Joseph Summerhill and Hannah Elisabeth Talbot. He was born 28 Nov 1893 in Scranton, PA and died 5 Jan 1959 in Chicago, IL.
