Re: Charles L Summers NC to Tn to TX

Hello,

I'm a Summers descendant (from Dent 1727-1809). Please contact me direct to discuss as I'm interested in what you have found. You may well have discovered new info as my sources on William Ivy Jacob are lacking (he's my 2nd cousin 6x removed). Here's a link to my website:

http://ourfamilysaga.com/getperson.php?personID=I7570&tr...

William Summers b. 1726 Maryland d. abt 1800 Iredell Co NC m. 1745 in Maryland to Mary Wheat. It has not been established when William & Mary came to NC though probably land records would be a good indication and it was probably just before or after the Rev. War.

Likewise, their son William b.1757 Maryland m. 1778 in Maryland to (1) Rebecca; later married (2) unknown and (3) 1816 in Iredell Co, NC to Nancy Reid. Probably William & Rebecca came about the same time from MD to NC as his parents but again is subject to verification.

William & Rebecca's son William Ivy Jacobs b. 1779 could have been born in Maryland or in North Carolina. As I said, much about the migrations from Maryland to NC could likely be established with land records which I have yet to investigate and I'm hoping you may have some data.

Currently, my limited sources don't have William & Rebecca in Caswell Co, NC though they may well have been before eventually ending up in Iredell Co. The confusion in North Carolina records is the presence of other seemingly unrelated Summers with similar first names.

I would be interested in joining you in this research of Charles L Summers. I'm particularly interested in the census you reference of his parents with a male child born earlier than their first daughter Rebecca J Summers b. abt 1801 m. John A Murchison.

Thanks!

Charles L Summers NC to Tn to TX

Hi everyone, I have been struggling for some time to locate the parents of Charles L Summers born in Caswell County, NC 21 Jul 1800. Here on Ancestry everyones family trees show his father as Pharaoh Summers born 1789. Am I the only one who has a problem with his father being 11? Is there documentation I am missing? Recently I found some evidence that points to William Ivy Jacob Summers of Iredell, NC. William migrated from Maryland to North Carolina. To do this, it is probable he passed through Caswell County and finally settled in Iredell County. William married Ann Lovelace abt 1800. On the 1800 Census of Iredell County he shows to have a male child under the age of 5 yet everyone that has William on their family tree lists his first child as a female born 1801 to 1802. It is important William married a Lovelace because it has been proven Charles L married a Miss Lovelace in NC but she died young. It's probable he married a relative, possibly a cousin. Second Charles L named 3 of his children after children of William. Now it's possible, it is just coincidence since Thomas, Rebecca and Alfred are fairly common names but lets look a little further down the line. Charles L Summers had a son he named John M. Summers. John M. was mortally wounded at the battle of Chickamauga. Why would this be important? It is important because Charles L Summers son Thomas P Summers named his son after his late brother. His name was John Murchison Summers according to his WW1 Draft Card. Now go back to William for a sec. Williams daughter, Rebecca married who? You guessed it, John Murchison. Now I wouldn't think Murchison is a common middle name to begin with but also with the first name John. I believe it's a good clue. Any thoughts or help on this would be appreciated.
Shannon

William E Summers (Immortal 32: Alamo) - Genealogy proved

I and fellow researcher Harry Glen Windham have completed our research on the ancestry of William E Summers, Immortal 32, and his brother Henry C G Summers.

Our monograph is entitled: "William E. Summers (1811-1836), History & Genealogy: Pioneer, Revolutionary, Ranger, Alamo Hero as Member of the Immortal 32" and is available for viewing at my website (see included link on the page):

http://ourfamilysaga.com/getperson.php?personID=I3549&tr...

Our research proves that William E Summers was born in Edgefield District, South Carolina, as were Alamo defenders Travis and Bonham. Our determination of his birthplace contradicts the long-held assumption that he was born in Tennessee.

William and Henry were sons of Jesse Summers and Sarah 'Sallie' Coate(s). This family moved from South Carolina to Clarke Co, Alabama about 1820/21; brothers William and Henry eventually moved on to Texas. Mr. Windham and I are cousins to William and Henry. On my website, interested persons can investigate more fully the genealogy of our Summers and related families.

Our monograph has been well received. We have met with the Alamo who will soon undertake to change their museum plaques to indicate William's birthplace in South Carolina. Additionally, the Texas Historical Commission has approved and funded a roadside historical marker to be placed next year near William's and Henry's intersecting 1835 Mexican land grants near Hallettsville, Texas.

I welcome any comments, feedback, or inquires either in this forum or through my website. In particular, I would like to hear from any Summers or related kin.

John Summers & Elizabeth Thompson

I've hit a pretty significant snag in my research... primarily due to other Ancestry members added unchecked research to their trees and then I come along later & have no idea what's true... Here's my problem:

My 6th g grandmother was Margaret Clark b. 1 Jun 1746, the daughter of James Clark (1704-1778) and Elizabeth Summers (1705-1781). That bit of info is fine as far as I know... (These two are also the parents of my 7th g grandfather Alexander Clark on a different branch of the same line in my tree)

The first problem comes in with the parents of both John and Elizabeth. I have multiple dates for each of them, so please try to bear with me...

I have John Summers b. 1683, the son of John Summers and Elizabeth Amick(?), m. Elizabeth Thompson b. 1689, dau. of Wm. Thompson (1625-1727?) and Ellen/Elanor Montague (1632-1659)... However, Ellen/Elanor would have been well into her 50s at the time of Elizabeth's birth, if she wasn't already dead at the time... this obviously isn't correct (unless her D.O.D. is wrong).

I also have John Summers b. 1646, the son of Henry Summers and Mabel Kendall, m. Elizabeth Thompson b. 1665, no parents listed. (This John Summers & Elizabeth Thompson have a dau. Elizabeth Summers b. 1689, the same date of birth I have for Eliz. Thompson #1, however she is listeed as having died in May 1722, before my 6th g grandmother was born... this may be an error because it is also listed as the D.O.D. for her mother)

It also doesn't help that these two families are in two different VA counties, Middlesex and King & Queen.

I'm very confused and the more I look over my notes the more confused I get... does anyone know much about this family? I'm really hoping I'm just missing a generation somewhere.

My great grandfather was William Summers born Oakford 1830, and I believe his parents were James Summers and Mary Woodley but I have to verify their details by consulting parish records next time I'm in N. Devon. Is this any use?

I am trying to obtain documented information on my father. He spoke very little of his family and I am having a difficulty validating who my Grandfather was. Donald was born on Oct. 10, 1928 in Toad Hop, Indiana (told not validated). He lived his childhood in Clay County, Indiana. He entered military service in 1944 at age 16 and according to his military record he had dependants when he enlisted. He married Helen Kolodzeizik in Germany and they had a daughter prior to returning to the USA in 1948.

Justice John Summers - Sussex/Warren New Jersey

I have been looking for information about John Summers who was allegedly a judge in Warren County, NJ for 20 years. (Warren County was created from Sussex County in 1824). I have looked and looked to no avail until I found a couple of articles in some historical newspapers:

Date: 1820-11-23;
Paper: Palladium of Liberty.

There is a list of names for three locations: Morris, Sussex, and Bergen.
Here are the names for Sussex:
Judges: John Johnson, Charles Carter, Robert Thomson.
Justices: John Summers, Daniel Vliet, Samuel D. Westfall, Frederick Kinney, Jacob Hann, William Cook, Robert D. Stewart, James Steele.
Commissioners: William Little, jun, Aaron Decker, Robert Carr, David D. Chandler, Joseph Edsall, Samuel Johnson, Gershom Coursen.

This is followed by a list of names that appear to be officers in the military (commissions or promotions?).

The exact same information was published:
Date: 1820-11-21;
Paper: Centinel Of Freedom;

under the headline:
Appointments in Joint-Meeting, November 15, 1820.

Here are my questions.
1) Can somebody explain "Justice" to me? In my mind, a justice is associated with a supreme court, but I do not find any John Summers associated with the New Jersey Supreme Court. Are we talking about Justices of the Peace, or some kind of lay position like that?
2) Does anybody have any information about this particular John Summers? I believe there were potentially two John Summers in Sussex in 1820, a father and son - John Summers Sr. born abt 1751 married to Anna Van Deren, and John Summers Jr. born 1784 married to Jane Gardner. If you have any information about these families, please let me know.

Many thanks!
Mary Ann

I think Mr. Eaves may be in error as to Thomas H. Summers parents.
The information that I have comes, in part, from a family member who researched the Nelson Co. Will Books where Thomas H. Summers' will is recorded (1/7/1856) His children are Robert, Mary, Thomas E. John (my gg-grandfather), Sarah Ann, and William H.
These Will Books show a Thomas H. to be a son of William Sr. (in William's will) along with siblings Elizabeth, Polly, Sarah, William, Samuel and William's wife Martha. This will was probated in late 1834.
The reprinted Minutes of Business Meetings of the Mill Creek Baptist Church (Nelson Co.) have an entry as follows: February 1799-William Summers received by letter from Falls Creek Church Pittsylvania, Virginia dated September 3rd, 1796.
I have not been able to find any other properly documented information linking Thomas H. to parents other than William and Martha Summers.
As to the Maryland and/or Carolina links, they may lead to William Summers in Pittsylvania,VA but so far all I know about him in addition to the above is an estimated birth year c1750.
Thank you for the very helpful information.
Mike

Note that Thomas & Rachel went from MD to Bedford Co, VA before eventually moving to Iredell Co, NC. Perhaps their is a correlation to this family? Be sure to look at the listed sources; and also the Marriage Event (not showing on my website) source below.

http://ourfamilysaga.com/getperson.php?personID=I2685&tr...

MARRIAGE EVENT:

1. Volume I, page 346 of Register of Maryland Heraldic Families, 1634-35 lists this couple in Anne Arundel County, Maryland with a daughter, Rachel. In addition is the fact that Thomas and Rachel named a son, Paul Talbot."

I have previously shared some data with researcher Jim Eaves. But he has some info that I don't and have not confirmed re: Thomas H Summers m.
Thanks for taking time to reply. After looking at your list, I do not believe he is one of the Thomas Summers you listed. He was born in Virginia c. 1786 and died in/near Bardstown,KY Nov. 13, 1858. He was my ggg-grandfather. His son, John Summers, who lived in Texas, returned to KY to settle his portion of the estate on or about late February, 1859.
If you search public member trees for Thomas H.(Hanson) Summers, you will find, as I said, dozens of trees with him and a correct death date, but almost all with incorrect parentage (in my opinion.)
Thanks again for the input. Let's see if anyone else chimes in.
Mike

i have Greenberry Summers and Rebecca Wilson were the parents of my Basil Pinkney Summers. Basil Pinkney Summers married Emily Jane Duffel-together they had several children: Thomas, Rebecca Jane, James, Greenberry, Mary Francis, Amanda, Louisa Clementine, and possibly an Anderson and a Rufus, though I can't confirm the last two. Amanda is my ggg-grandmother. Her daughter, Margaret Elizabeth "Lizzie" Summers is my gg-grandmother. Lizzie's death certificate lists James Franklin Summers as her father. James Franklin Summers is Basil Pinkney Summers' brother. Thus making Lizzie's father also her great uncle. I was wondering if perhaps Amanda Summers wasn't actually her mother, that maybe Basil Pinkney an Emily Jane gave their son James the middle name Franklin and perhaps he married a different Amanda. It's pretty far fetched, but I like to look at things from all angles rather that just use the speculation that everyone else provides! :)

Stephanie

Grace Letton migrated to KY (probaly the beginning of my Summers in KY though others may have come later). There is controversy exactly where each died i.e. KY or PA and my bet is Washington Co, PA for Benjamin (and is why he is not listed on the KY Places (Locations) list but Grace Letton is. Incidentally, I descend from this Benjamin's brother Dent Summers.

I'm certainly interested in anyone who may be my relative.
Thomas H Summers Nelson Co. KY

OK. Time to own up to your research. Thomas H Summers (c1786- 1858) who died in/near Bardstown, Nelson Co. KY is listed in more that 80 -yes,80- public member trees on this web site. Who was his father? Several dozen say John Summers; another several dozen say Thomas Summers, and the rest seem to believe it was William Summers. Intrestingly, but not surprisingly, I cannot find ANY tree that offers support for their conclusion regarding his father other than a reference to someone else's tree! That is TERRIBLE research and is of little value.

Granted, I may have missed a source from a family Bible, diary, etc. atttached to someone's tree. Will someone claiming him in their tree please step forward and offer something that points to a real, independent record, rather than cribbed data from another lazy researcher!

If any are interested in getting to the bottom of this, I will share with all one clue I've found that may (or may not) be a step toward the answer.

Hi: I don't know if your still researching The Summers family, if you are it was John's Brother Michel who Married Mary Quigley. One of their children John (my Grandfather) Married Johanna Nolan in Sarsfield Ont. in the early 1900's.
Of their 11 children Helena and Rita still alive. It's rumoured that John along with I assume his brother-in-law Phillipe Morin (who donated the land) build the Catholic church in Cumberland.
