Yes, this is almost correct. John Chestnutt is not. Joesph Chestnutt brother was John Chestnutt Sumner his son was John Cary Sumner . He was the founder of Sumner, Ga. 8 miles west from Tifton ,Ga. Both Jason's and Dan's Sumner's family are from there. The rest of the line is right. Thank You Jason and Dan for the great infomation. By the way Joesph Chestnutt's father -in-law was Jonathan Smith . His daughter was Mahala Smith. She was a Cherokee Indian.Yes, a small chance she might be realted to Gladys Love Smith . I would love to find out. That would be a big discover. They both were around the same Ga area . Back to the Sumner's they were a big part for putting Florida back on the map after the Civil War. The line is J.D. < John S < Daniel Thompson,Jr < Daniel Thompson,Sr.< John Cary < and Joseph Chestnutt Sumner.

My maternal great-grandfather, Frederick Sumner was born in Liverpool in 1848. I am not sure when he came to the US, but I know that he had 13 children with 2 wives, the youngest of which was my grandfather Chester Winfield Sumner. The second wife, my great-grandmother, was named Marie Salewsky. Some of the 13 children included Violet, August, Ruth, and Frederick.

Thanks for the information but I guess I'm way off. Zelphia is such an unusual name I thought there might have been a connection. The sisters I have in my files were Lucinda Moore b. abt. 1813 and Zelphia Moore b. abt. 1794, daughters of David Moore and Margaret Sherman in Tennessee. Lucinda Moore married Fielding Lewis Jr., and Zelphia Moore married Anderson Jennings. Their brother Squire is my ancestor. One of Squire Moore's daughters married a Sumner in MO. David Moore's mother was Zilphia/Zelphia Haines b. abt. 1738 Crooked Run MM, Frederick, VA. Her father was Bethanah Haines. She married Anthony Moore. I can't locate any Alexander Moore in my files to connect to these. Many thanks anyway!

Thank you for your quick response. A bit of confusion on the wife of Hiram Melton..Many researchers seem to think Hiram was married to the sister of Zelpha Sumner; but I have not found any proof or indication of that..
Once again thank you for your response..I did have Zelpha's father as Benjamin Sumner.
Hello, have you made much progress since this post? Merton Rogers Sumner (b. 11 Jun 1887, South Paris, ME; d. 9 Nov 1943, Pittsburgh, PA) was my paternal great-grandfather. He was the son of Rogers Caleb Sumner (b. 28 Nov 1861, Leeds, ME; d. 10 Apr 1934, Leeds, ME) and Lillie Ellen Strickland (11 Aug, 1863, Embden, ME; d. 24 Apr 1894, South Paris, ME). Hope this helps.

Wonderful book, I have a copy & will cheerfully supply info.
Please contact me privately mrsfishersfunnyfarm@yahoo.com
It was reprinted, paperback, shortly before Irene died.
BUT so far no one has been able to document Hezekiah Sumner's origin.
Family lore - he was from Wales. No proof on either continent per Peggy Rich.
My best guess - Our Hezekiah was a descendant of the original VA immigrant, John Sumner.
Family migrated north & South....
Many Sumners in NC. Guessing Hezekiah's immediate relatives were from NC.
During Hezekiah's lifetime, state & county boundaries were changing.
Hezekiah probably didn't move - Botetourt, Montgomery, to Floyd -
but the county boundaries changed.
I have not found a link between our Hezekiah and the New England Hezekiahs.
Anyone know who/origins of Mathew - 50 acres, James and Samuel Sumner.
In SW VA at the same time as Hezekiah.
50 acres.....may have been payment for government/military service ?
Jeff Weaver website has tons of info www.newrivernotes.com

Sandy Fisher mrsfishersfunnyfarm@yahoo.com

I have it back to England. I got most of this research off of RootsWeb and I'm still working on getting most of it fleshed out and verifying it. My section branches off from William C who was Rachel's brother. The system here wont allow me to upload a pdf file to be attached, but I can email it to you, if you send me an email at genixbearcub (a) gmail.com

Thanks for responding. I was trying to determine if I had a connection to Burrell SUMNER since I have some SUMNER relations in south Georgia. My latest is Rachel SUMNER (1819-1901)in Berrien & Irwin County, Georgia. She was the daughter of Jesse Charles SUMNER (1799-1869)and Serena Lavina YATES (1799-1879)of Irwin County, Georgia.

Do you have any ancestors of Burrell's before Clyde Carl SUMNER & Hattie THOMPSON?

Edward Austin Sumner - Almost Impossible?

I research the Macomb County, Michigan, branch of the descendants of Thomas Hunt Sumner and Rebecca Downer. Here is my brickwall:

Edward Austin Sumner, born 18 Mar 1879 in Armada, Macomb County, Michigan, to Arthur E. Sumner and Ida Mary Parker. In 1900 Ed was a law student in Mt. Clemens, Macomb Co., Mich.

He married Mabel Butler twice. The first time 24 Aug. 1903 in Windsor, Ontario; they were divorced; then remarried 15 March 1918, in Cassopolis, Cass County, Michigan. Apparently they divorced again about 1925.

There were two children born to Ed and Mabel, Butler Sumner and Jean Sumner Donaldson. Both have passed away.

Ed was an attorney and also served during World War I as a Lieutenant.

In 1910 Edward and Mabel are living in Grand Rapids, Kent Co., Mich., where he is an attorney; in 1920 they are living in Mt. Clemens, Macomb Co., Mich., where he is a superintendent of an auto factory.

Ed made his home mainly in Mt. Clemens during his marriage and disappears from the city directories there in 1925. His wife Mabel appears in 1930 as a "widow." Her obit does not mention Ed.

Up until now, we thought that Ed had died about 1925. I just obtained the obituary of his mother Ida, who died 25 Sept. 1952 and she was survived by her son Edward "of Indiana!" I found an Edward Sumner although the spelling of the surname is suspect, 1n 1930, Detroit, Wayne Co., Mich., married to "Mattie." He is a writer for a magazine. Most of the information fits nicely, but ???

I have no further clues. Indiana is a big state.

Any ideas?

Sorry, no. What we know about the Trelfa/Trelsa comes from the Eachus family tree, which is now elsewhere on Ancestry. Thro' that we've got back to a John Trelfa (b1738) from Church Minshull who married a Jane Eachus in 1760, but no further. He might certainly have been a brother, but it's only a guess really.

Robert Sumner and Ann Latham

Does anyone know if Ann was married prior to marrying Robert? I have Ann and Robert as being married in February 1807, a double wedding with William Isaac Sumner and Dorothy Latham, at St Michaels church in Coventry.

However, while researching the Latham family, I have seen more than one tree showing that Ann was married to a Thomas Wilkinson (Reverend), married 1778. They have numerous children born between 1779 and 1807.

All other family members I have for Ann (parents and siblings) match with these other trees, everything except Ann's husband.

Does anyone have any information that might clarify this for me?

Thanks in advance :)

Benjamin Sumner received a grant of land in Illinois for his service in the War of 1812 from North Carolina. He received a land bounty of 160 acres in Illinois. He moved his family from NC and started the town of Sumner by donating some of the land for the town. He was one of the first permanent settlers in the area and donated part of his land to the town. In 1822 Benjamin built the first ox grist and flax mill. He had a general store and was known as an industrious farmer. He opened a saloon in 1856 in Sumner. He is my 3rd Great Grandfather.

Please let me know about the book. If you can help me with this info even if I can't find the book, I would appreciate it.

Best regards,
Robin Inman
