Stacie, I don't have much info on your mother, but I was doing some genealogy research for my brother in law, and he is apparently your cousin. His dad was Michael Clifford Cameron, your mom's brother. His name is Robert, he has a twin named Lori, and their older brother is Michael Jr. He remembers your mom living with them when they were young for awhile.

Just thought it might help, and if you're interested in contacting them i can help there too. They do not know much about their family at all, so I'm trying to some research for them. Both their parents died when they were young, and they remember that your grandmother, Betty Jean Sunderland, shot her husband Maurice Cameron (in front of them) before she died. They kind of remember your uncle Daniel, but said your mom moved out when they were still really young, and they never heard from her again. It's a really tragic family history due to the above stated, and their dad Michael abused them for years before anybody took them away.

I don't know if any of this helps at all or if you're still interested, because i see this was posted a long time ago, but I thought I would try. Thank you, Marti Putnam

if you would like to contact me i'm on Facebook, or email me at marti.putnam@yahoo.com

Thanks for the correction. I see I had the month and day transposed for your mother's birthdate. I have also made the correction on the marriage date and location for John and Sarah. I'll keep looking for parents of this John. It is the most common of all Sunderland names.

I believe that the Sarah and John that you're referring to are of a different line. I've seen the entry of my Sarah and John in the parish records.
My mother wasn't born on the date you listed. Her birthday was November 5, 1912 in Hope Valley, RI. She died in Philadelphia, PA on November 29, 2000. My father Frederick Martin was born on December 8, 1905. You're correct in stating that he died in July, 1978, but I can't remember the exact day. Sorry...

Bill
I would like to find more on the parents of John Sunderland and Sarah Hepworth, but to date I have not had success. Everything, except of one item I have matches what you have wirtten. The one variance is I had John and Sarah getting maried on May 20, 1834 in London. I have you mom born on May 11, 1912 in Hope Valley, but don't show her death. If you can provide that I will update. Your dad, Frederick Martin was born in 1905 correct? I only have July 1978 for his death. Can you provide me the day as well. Happy New Year!

Yes, Louis was my grandfather; Emma, one of his daughters, was my mother. Her sisters were Jennie, Ellen, and Grace; Louis, Jr. was her brother.
Do you know anything about David's parents, John Sunderland and Sarah Hepworth? Sarah was born in England on Sept. 30, 1802; she died on Sept. 10, 1882. John was born in England on Jan. 2, 1807; he died on Apr. 25, 1882. They were married on Oct. 13, 1828 at St. Peter's, St. Andrew's, St. Mark's Church in Huddersfield, Eng.
David's wife Ellen was the daughter of James Horton and Elmira Starkweather. He was married twice to, I believe, twin sisters. Could they have been Elmira and Almira? One marriage was in Plainfield, CT on 1/6/1823; the second marriage was on 3/8/1829 in Rehobeth, MA. Do you know anything about this?
Thanks,

Bill Martin

Bill, David and Ellen actually had three children: Emma, Frederick and Louis. He died in Waverly on Aug. 27, 1897 and was a grocer. His wife Ellen was born in CT and she died on March 22,1907 I am not sure where she died. Are you a descendent of Louis Sunderland? I know he had five children, just one son, Louis, Jr.

Re: Richard and Josephine Sunderland with daughter Helen Lewis in Delaware

I think you have the two families merged. The one you start out with Helen Josephine Sunderland of Maryland was married to Walter Lewis and they had a son who died in infancy. this Helen died in Delaware as well, an unfortunate suicide who at the time was living with one of her sisters and brother in law at the time, after living for years with her parents who had recently died after becoming widowed herself.

Our great grandmother's name was Josephine H. Sunderland (we believe H=Helen) Birth 29 MAR 1875 in Philadelphia City, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Death 10 Feb 1897 in Philadelphia City, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from TB (we found her death certificate after expanding the death year). She was the one married to William Lewis, Jr. of Philadelphia (we are still trying to tie down the facts surrounding his ancestry and birth and we believe it is 8 Jan 1876, death is sometime after 1921 since he disappears from the Philadelphia City Directory after this date and we haven't found him again yet). They were married in New Jersey on 27 Aug 1893. She gave birth to my grandmother, Helen Josephine Lewis on 8 Feb 1894/5 in Philadelphia. We believe the 1894 is the correct year but have found both years on records (we think her parents went to New Jersey to get married before the age of consent likely because of an unexpected pregnancy which would put her birth of 1894 the likely correct year). She died 10 June 1985 in Garden Grove, California.

Hope this helps clear up the confusion (we were under the same impression you have noted for some time until connecting with family from the Delaware Sunderland line and simultaneously finding the marriage record for Walter Lewis as well as our great grandmother's death record and marriage record to William Lewis which confirmed their facts as well.

Hello, Rebecca Sunderland was born in 1802 in Halifax, Yorkshire, England and her parents were John Sunderland and Mary Burton. She did die on 8 Aug. 1882 in Kurrajong. I am aware of her first marriage to William James Townsend (1820 -1842). William and Rebecca had 14 children and at the time of his death, 8 of them were still minors so it does not seem surpising she married again, a year later for help in supporting those children. I show that James and Rebecca had one daughter Rachel, but have no information on her.

This is what I can tell you. Helen Joseph Sunderland was born Aug. 12, 1876 to Richard Henry Clay Sunderland, Jr. and his wife Josephine Elizabeth Griffen. She was born in Prince George's Co., Maryland and she died on December 5, 1934. She married William Lewis from Philadelphia and they had Helen Josephine Lewis born in Feb. 1895. Helen Sunderland Lewis did have siblings named Richard, Ruby, Pearl, Elise, Sarah, Lillie and also Edith, Jane, Mattie and Mary. Mattie, Mary and Jane had each died before 1990. This family was living in Wilmington, Delaware in 1930 and at least three of her siblings died there. I do not have a location for the death of Helen Josephine, but it is likely it was Wilmington, Delaware. If you could fill me in on dates for your Helen Josephine Lewis and her nusband and marriage info that would be appreciated.

Hi Joseph,
My sister Diane communicated with you several years ago. She has located the marriage certificate for Helen Josephine Sunderland Lewis to William Lewis... Aug 27 1893 Camden, Camden, New Jersey. We have a birth date from a 1900 census record of Jan 1876 PA, for William. We have Helen Lewis's father RHC Sunderland's death certificate where he lists his father as Richard Sunderland b. MD and mother is Sarah Chaney b. MD. Ancestry lists a marriage for Richard H and Sara Ann Smith. Is this the same Sara?
Crystal

I had a Peter Sunderland ancestor. He fought at the battle of Bunker Hill.
He was the first white settler in St. Auglaize county, outside Lima, Ohio and bought an 80 acre farm west of Lima.
He is buried in the Ft. Amanda, Ohio cemetery.
I am one of his descendants and am Jesse Orman Sunderland, son of John Henry Sunderland and brother of another of the same name-John Henry Sunderland. We had a sister, Maxine.
My family was born and raised in south west Missouri.
My father's family came from Ohio and he married my mother, Clara Elizebeth Scarbrough.
We have an annual reunion in October of each year in Carthage, Missouri, near Joplin.
Anyone who thinks they might be one of our relatives are encouraged to email me and come to our reunion this year.
My email address is: JesseFran@gmail.com. My phone number is: 925-381-4848.

Samuel was born around 1898 in Pennsylvania, and John was born around 1899, both dates according to a 1910 Census record I found for Philadellphia. Any information would be appreciated.

Here is the information I can give you on Harriett. She was born on Dec. 9, 1839 in Haworth, Yorkshire, England. (by the way I was just there in July 2010) She married John Everett Clough on Aug. 15, 1861. Four of their five children were born in India. The five children were: Allen, Nellora, Ongola, Warren, and Gratia. All of the children married but I do not have information on all of their families. Gratia married Lawrence Upjohn of the Upjohn Chemical Company.

I did find on the internet that John Sunderland came to America in 1620. There are three successive generations of John Sunderland(s) in my family tree...going back to 1620's. Perhaps there was another generation of "John" that fathered the Boston, Mass "John" of about 1620. Dates appear to be "rounded" going that far back. Perhaps Boston was used to denote the prior region that became Boston?

Re: Shelby County Iowa Sunderlands

BJ Worley

My Great, great (great I think) grandfather was Lorenzo Dow Sunderland born in Ohio. Here is his biography.

LORENZO D. SUNDERLAND, farmer and stock-raiser, Harlan Township, is one of the oldest settlers on the east side of Shelby County. He is a native of Ohio, born in Fayette County, June 24, 1825, and is the son of Francis D. and Permelia (Knight) Sunderland, natives of Virginia, who came to Ohio at an early day. The father died when Lorenzo D. was an infant. At the age of six years he was taken to the home of one Nathan Coffman, with whom he lived until he grew to manhood. March 12, 1849, ho, with several friends, made up a company to go to California. They went to St. Joseph, Missouri, where they organized, and started with mule teams, May 1, 1849. One hundred and four days were consumed in crossing the plains, in which time they encountered storms and Indians, with whom they had considerable trouble. They landed at Auburn, on the north fork of the American River. They started with 104 men, and reorganized twice on the journey, and arrived in California with four teams. Their tent was the second one pitched in that part of the country. On his arrival Mr. Sunderland engaged in mining, which he followed successfully until the next June. He then returned to Ohio by way of the Isthmus of Panama and New York, being the first person to bring gold from California mines to New York. The gold dust was taken to the mint at Philadelphia and coined. Mr. Sunderland still has the receipt from the government for the gold. He remained in Ohio some time after his arrival, and then went to Howard County, Indiana, and purchased 160 acres of land, with the intention of farming it. He was married June 29, 1851, to Miss Mary E. Lucas, a native of Ross County, Ohio, and a daughter of the Rev. Richard and Mary E. (Kirkendall) Lucas, of German descent. After his marriage he sold his farm in Indiana, and removed with his father-in-law's family to Champaign County, Illinois. Here he purchased eighty acres of partially improved land, and resided upon it for one year. In February, 1852, he went to KainsviIle, now Council Bluffs, and then came to Shelby County and entered eighty acres of good land. He built a cabin and made some hay. In the spring of 1854 he removed his family to this place. He afterward entered 240 acres of government land, and has engaged in agricultural pursuits. He now owns a landed estate of 780 acres of improved land in a high state of cultivation. He has also assisted his children to procure homes of their own. Mr. and Mrs. Sunderland are the parents of ten children, of whom eight are still living - Nevada Errett, wife of William H. Errett; Leroy and Leora Sunderland; Nancy Jane Errett, wife of Z. T. Errett; Juliette Bates, wife of Abner Bates; William Sunderland; Lucy Firebaugh, wife of Frank Firebaugh; Belle Westrope, wife of O. D. Westrope; C. N. Sunderland and Ida May Sunderland. Leroy and Leora Sunderland were twins, born June 23, 1855, and both are now dead. Leroy died when he was one and one-half years old, and Leora died when she was seventeen years, eight months and seventeen days old. Mr. Sunderland was the first school director in the county. In 1864 he was elected sheriff, and served one year and a half. He was deputy sheriff for several years. He was one of the promoters of the Agricultural Society, and has been a director since its organization. He is a charter member of the Farmers' Alliance, and was its first vice-president. He is a member of the I. O. O. F., Harlan Lodge, No. 264. His political sympathy is with the Democratic party, having cast his first vote for Lewis Cass. Mr. Sunderland makes a specialty of Pole Angus stock. He now has a herd of thirty- two head, of which six head are full-blooded.

Hello,
I read your post on the Sunderland family in the Jamestown NY area. I would like to get in touch with descendants of Maurice B Sunderland who was Captain in the US Army in 1918. I suppose its full name is Maurice Briggs Sunderland.
During that period of war in 1918 he had "a war god daughter" who was my mother and on leave visited our family in eastern part of France. He wrote very touching letters to my mother who at that time, was 7 year old. My mother passed away a year ago. The only information I have on Maurice is his name and a nice picture of him in uniform. The picture is from The Camp Art Co in Jamestown NY and Maurice looks to be around 25 to 30 year old. I supposed Maurice lived in Jamestown.
At the end of August I am travelling to the US and will be close to Jamestown NY and would like to get in touch with descendants of Maurice to show them these letters.
If you could help it would be appreciated.
You can contact me by email kienerjerome@neuf.fr
Best to you.
Jerome
The picture is from The Camp Art Co in Jamestown NY and Maurice looks to be around 25 to 30 year old. I supposed Maurice lived in Jamestown.
At the end of August I am travelling to the US and will be closed to Jamestown NY and would like to get in touch with descendants of Maurice to show them these letters.
If you could help it would be appreciated.
You can contact me by email kienerjerome@neuf.fr
Best to you.
Jerome

Emily (Is that your name too?)
There are many Timothy Sunderland's in your family. The parents of the Timothy Sunderland in your post were Timothy Sunderland and Hannah Dawson. His parents were Timothy Sunderland and Phebe Booth. I am not aware of any siblings that Emily May had. Her father Timothy had a brother W.C. Sunderland.

Henry Sunderland, b.1859, wife Louise, b.1863, lived Champaign Co., IL

I have an original 5”x7” photograph of “Henry and Louise Sunderland and daughter”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in about 1895, and shows parents about mid-30s, and the daughter about age 8.

I found Henry and Louise Sunderland in the 1900 Champaign Co., IL census, showing Henry was born Mar 1859 IL and Louise M. Oct 1863 in OH. Daughter Ethel P. was born Jun 1886 in KS, and two sons were born in 1897 and 1900 in IL.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to this Sunderland family.
