Dear Susan,

It has been several years since we last reached out to one another and I was wondering if you had any information on the existing sunshine family members who are still out there? Any info you have about the family will be of great interest.

I hope all is well,

Bryan

Hello Bryan,
While this seems like snail-mail, I am delighted to have found you. In fact, Aunt Manci and Viktor were a missing link in the family tree. My Great-Aunt Bertha was my grandmother Hermina's sister. The other sibilngs were Vali and Dezso. I keep in close touch with Aunt Vali's granddaughter Marion, who lives in Miami. None of us knew what happened to the Vezekenyis. My late father Ali (Aladar) was sad unitl the end of his life that he never found his beloved cousins after WWII.
Please tell me where you are and a bit more about you.
There is also a Sunshine family tree with about 200 descendents listed. I will send you a link after you contact me. Marion, too, will be delighted to hear about you.
Warmly,

Susan

I too am a Sonnenschein grandchild (great great grandchild actually). My great great grandfather was Lazar Vezekenyi and his wife was named Bertha Sunshine. I know that this post is five years old but maybe you are still out there?

Bryan

I just came across your note from several years ago. My grandfather was Hermann Sonnenschein, who emigrated to the US in the early part of the 20th century, with his son, Victor, who was my father. I would be interested in any information you have about the family.
Thanks
Charles Sonnenschein

Hello - My great grandmother was Kate Sunshine from the East End of London - born about 1865 and married to Barnett Stone in 1887. It seems she was living with relatives, the Solomon Silver family where she was listed as their neice on the 1881 census -, but I can't find any other direct relatives of hers! Have you learnt any more about the London branch?
I am a Sonnenschein grandchild

My name is Susan Weinberger (my father was Aladar Alfred Nemenyi) and I live in Silver Spring, MD. I am the grandaughter of Hermina Sonnenschein. Her father Max, spent several years in Cleveland , but returned to Vilke/Keresztur, near Losoncz in Slovakia. Max is buried at the Jewish cemetery in Rimavska Sobota, where I was born in 1947. Hermina's youngest brother, Dezso, also lived in Cleveland . He visited his sisters in 1914 and returned to Cleveland as WWII approached 0 his legendary uncle (Bert?) lived there, afterall. Dezso remained a bachelor until his 70-s. He passed away in the mid 1960-s. Another sister, Vali moved from Vienna to Barranguillam, Columibia in 1938 with her children Laci and Edit. Edit's daughter, Marion Brandon, lives in Coral Gables, Fl. My next great-aunt, Manczi (Vezekenyi) lived somewhere in the US, and I would love to know her or her children's whereabouts. There must be other Sonnenscheins/Sunshines that we share great-grandparents with. I have lots of tidbits of family history and lore and this is very exciting to me. I look forward to hearing from my, hopefully, many cousins.

The details are vague, but my great-grandfather I believe came from there, but he ended up in Berlin as a young man. Started a family, then split to Leipzig to start another family. This is where my grandfather and my father are from. My father then left East Germany 'the hard way'.
There existed many variants to this surname, especially if from Jewish or Galizien descent. Sonnensheyn, Zoneschayn and all flavors in between. Anything to mask polish and/or jewish identity between the world wars to make it germanized. Look into the jewish database of polish names avtaynu.com.
I believe that is why Sonnenschein is a relatively common surname in Germany now, but no family crest. Your name was changed again to be Americanized right? My father came here in the 60's so pressure to change the name was not so great.

Gina,
The only way to know if there is a relationship is to find out the names of all the siblings od Herman. If Jakob is one of them ,then possibly we are related.
I did not think that Sonnenschein was that common of a name. It is a german name emanating from Prussia from what i read. Many Germans went to Poland and Russia during hard times and stayed.
None of those names look familiar.
Jakob had two sons, Julius and Henry. I am related to Julius. Henry lived in Los Angeles and had a son Jack.

Hope that you will find out more information.
Phil

Who were his nephew and son in LA? That's where Herman moved after New York and Chicago. He apparently had a sister who came over from Brest-Litovsk too. Don't know her name, but she married ?Silver and lived in Colorado. He married Nettie Lichtenstein and they had my friend's dad, Arnold Sunshine and siblings Minnie (Mannon), Miriam (Mickey), Loren, Bernice (Toby) and Sydelle. I think there were more siblings of Herman's generation here, but haven't been able to connect yet. The Sunshine family in Denver had the names Meyer, William, Meneche (Minnie), David and Macha. Macha married David Silver. Do any of those sound right to you? Keep in touch.
Gina

Any possible connection. Couldn't find his arrival record in Ellis Island archive. Don't think the name is either Herman or Sunshine originally. Family lore says it was Zunshine or Zonenshine.
