Re: Helen Supernaw m. William Joseph Goodrow, NY

I have been able to finally learn the following information on my great grandparents, William Goodrow/Goodro and Ellen/Helen Suprenant/Surprenant/Supernaw:

William Goodrow and Ellen Suprenant are buried in St. Helen's Catholic Church cemetary, Chasm Falls, NY.

William (according to what I've learned through census records) was born Nov. 1833. His Civil War discharge papers indicate that he was born in Champlain, NY. According to above mentioned church records and tombstone, he died September 16, 1918. Ellen (also Helene in church records and Hellen in 1860 Mooers, Clinton Co., NY census) was born about 1839/1840 and died Sept. 1898. Church records have her maiden name as "Surprenant" but is "Suprenant" on her headstone.

Their children:

Twins, Willburt and Wilmer, born about 1858 (1860 Mooers, NY census; only "Wilber" appears in 1870 Altona, NY census); Dillia (also Della and Delia), born 1862; Edmund H., born 1864, died. Feb. 1938; Joseph Albert, born Oct. 1870, died Aug. 1956; and my grandfather, George Albert, born April 1883, died Sept 1965.

Nina, see my "Update on my Upstate NY Goodrows" message on the Goodrow message board.

Deb

Hi Richard,
I just found your response to my email. Thank you. My grandfather was not too forthcoming with information on his childhood/background. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1961 before I was even born. The information that I know is as follows: He has given his name as Dexter Hurley, but then said he was named after his father Joseph. He ran away from home when he was somewhere between the age of 13 - 16. His mother's maiden name was Supernal/Supernaw - the spelling is still questionable as no one in the family seems to know. He was born in NY, not sure why he ran away from home. My mother, Mary Hurley Santomauro, said she thinks that he had siblings but didn't speak of them and was very secretive re: his family. I am not sure why he ran away from home other than he was not happy for some reason. He served in the war in 1917-1918. He lied about his age the first time he signed up, then gave his real age a second time he went back. My mother said he also worked on the Hudson Bay Bridge at some point. He married Stella Gladys Hicks. They married in San Antonio, and at some time moved to Missouri where my mother said they lived on a ranch. They had the following children: Dexter, Thelma, Stella, Mary and Katie. His wife died shortly after giving birth to the last child. Would love to hear from you on if you think there is any connection. The chances of them having the same mother's name seemed to great to pass up. Hope to hear from you soon.
Hi Rose, This is Very interesting...The little we know of my fathers family is;
MY father Thomas was born Nov 20 1888 in NY City, died Mar 4 1972, his mother was Mary Supernaw. His father was Joseph Hurley born [we think] 1830 in Philidelphia PA..
Thomas had an older brother Edward F. Hurley fathered by Joseph with a Mary Devan in March 1880, possibly in Seneca Falls N.Y. he died here on L. I. in October of 1968.The story is they had a brother Joseph who ran away from home at 14, they think to Texas... all contact was lost,
Joseph Sr. and Mary Supernaw had a daughter Izabel in 1892 in NY City at which time Mary died giving birth. NY City Death records show a Mary Hurley age 31 died 28 June 1892. The Daughter was supposedly placed for adoption somewhere in Pennsylvania, again all contact was lost.
Joseph Sr. remarried and fathered another daughter in 1900 who was my fathers half sister.. We have kept in contact with her family over the years. I am actively seeking to connect all the dots and will shortly journey to Manhattan in pursuit of the pertinent records in Chambers St Archives. It looks to be possible that your Grandfather is our missing uncle.. the ages and dates seem to be about right, and how many Hurley/Supernaw families could their have been in NYC during that period.. Hope this been of some help.

Joseph/Dexter Hurley
Hello Rose, In studying your info more closely attempting to definitely establish his identity it occurs to me that you said he lied about his age to get into the service in WW1. ???

We're almost sure Our Mary Supernaw died in 1892. Ergo, Dexter would have had to have been born before that which would make him at least [1891] 26 in 1917.. Assuming he had to lie because he was too young that doesn't compute.. However we are not 1000% sure yet as to the exact date of her death.
Hope you can shed some light on this
Thanks,,, hoping for the best.
Richard H.

I am trying to get other info so I can fill
in some blanks. I show that Mary Supernaw
James married Wilbur Lee Ramsey on 30 Sep
1959. She was born on 26 Feb 1922. I would
like to know if she is still alive or not,
where she was born and buried.

I also would like to know where Clara LaVern
Supernaw was born and buried, if you have
that info.

I also have other questions about other
Ramsey family members, but this is a good
start.

If you have that info., just e-mail me.
Thank you for any help you can give me
and looking to hear from you soon, MIKE

Laura (Amelia) Supernaw m. Walter McGee, NY 1900

I am looking for my grandmother's parents names. She was born 3/27/1881 in upstate New York near the Canadian border. She married Walter Mc Gee 12/23/1900. She had a sister Amilia, and another Moira who died at age 16. I am not sure if she was born in Clinton County or Quebec. She spoke French so it is possible to be Canadian or parents might have been. If so the spelling my be different than "Supernaw". We have searched records in Clinton County and the archives in Albany to no avail. Any help would be well appreciated.
