Elizabeth,
My family did settle in Ohio after coming down from Canada and my great-grandfather's name was Joseph although not yours. When I first began my Ohio research, I ran across another Joseph Surman several times and had to be careful to not view his records as those of my Joseph.
My lineage does come from the same Horsepath, Stanton Harcourt, Marcham, Fyfield, and Buckland areas back through the late 1500s. I also have a fair listinmg of the John Surman 1716 - 1798 lifespan although none of your names appear in it. HOWEVER, sometimes the family was not as clearly recorded when they were in a different country and mine spread out over 4 continents, so be patient.
As for contacting the Surman Family Historical Society, of which I am a member, or S*RM*N society, the following addresses should accomplish that for you if you wish to go that direction: Chairman: John S Sermon
design@johnsermon.demon.co.uk and
Secretary: Maureen Surman
Maureen@msurman.freeserve.co.uk

John Surman

Re: John SURMAN (1716-1798)

Hi if I think you are looking for who I think you are it is my grandfathers (Colin Seagrave Surman) father or grandfather. I think John came from a family of 16, so it can be complicated.

I have just begun finding out for myself, my mother told me as I was watching who do you think you are irnoically enough. I have heard the names John and Elizabeth so it is a good bet they are the ones you are looking for and I am decended from. My brother and I are the last of that part of the bloodline until we have sons.

There is a man in oxford called John Surman, his father dedicatd his life to researching the family tree and then his son John took over. The family tree is bigger than a dinning table. The last time I saw it some years ago it went back to early 1600 or late 1500. I think one of the early men on the tree was actually the royal physician to King Charles the 1st.

Please do not take this as gospel as I have only really just started to look and learn myself. My father has a family tree that he is sending me so I can look when it arrives. Your best bet is to contact John Surman in Oxford, I wish to contact him too but do not have the details. This is how I found this site.

When I was younger they used to hold a Surman day or weekend or something in Bath I believe. I went when I was young but am unsure if it still takes place. If you know where White Ladies Aston is which is just outside of Worcester and on the way from Droitwich there is a church where loads of Surmans are buried. I am sure you will find decendants of John there. As I remember there is a pub called the copper kettle or something like that and there is a small track leading off it to a small church with an old iron gate. Maybe worth a look if you have no other joy.

Stay in touch and if I find John in Oxfords details I will pass them onto you. Happy hunting.

Richard J Surman

I haven't got these names in my direct ancestry, but
My family ancestry goes back to from Stanton Harcourt in Oxfordshire - Stephen Surman 1761 - he had many children , including Charles Surman, who married Emma Deadman in 1830.and had many children (I have the names of the siblings here, if you find a connection).

I know that the members of the family moved to America in the mid 1800's but am not sure which ones, - It may have been Charles 1834 and Henry, who were both Shoemakers, but someone else from the Surmans may pick it up and know more.

Good luck with this, JT

Hi Cathy,

I know that this thread is old, but I hope you get this message. I am researching my grandfather's side and his father (my great grandfather) was Edward Suermann, Jr. Edward's mother Louisa Sophia(nee Schmidt)Suermann died in 1875 after her and Edward, Sr. daughter, Louisa (DOB 1872-death 1875) died. Edward, Sr and Edward, Jr. then moved to Aurora, IN from Cincinnati, Ohio. Edward, Jr. left home when he was about 16, he married Margaret Bahr and they had 6 children that lived. If you would like more information, please contact me. sasteuer@juno.com I would love to get any information you might have about the Suermann's.

Thanks,
Susan

Dear Clifford,

My research has lead me to your post. My paternal grandmother was Katarzyna Wenckowska from home. She was born in Moglino Poland to Michal Wenckowski and Julianna Krasna. Her sister Franciszka was married to Edward Cislikowski, they would be the great-grandparents of your mother Dolores. I would be her 2nd cousin once removed and us 2nd cousins twice removed. Have you done any research on your mother's family? Do you know if Frances, Josephine and Katherine had any other siblings?

If you wish to respond directly to me- my e-mail address is szal@webtv.net

Dolores L (nee Szalasny) Konopa
Buffalo NY

Dear Celina, thank you very much for replying to me, especially as I did not properly sign the e-mail I sent,
My name is Janice Thompson and I have recently inherited this tree, and when I started looking on the web I found that there was a large society of S*rm*ns, which I am in the process of joining.
So I starting looking to see if any names matched with the ones I had and saw your e-mails about Horspath.
I have got 2 Richards on the tree I have, Richard Son of Thomas 1749 (brother of Stephen Surman, who according to the tree is an ancestor of mine) Richard 1749 married Elizabeth Mallam, Horspath, had a son Henry.
There is also anther Richard mentioned on this tree, illeg son of Esther (daughter of Stephen Surman) , in 1812.
I must say that I have inherited this tree in handwritten form, much to my astonishment. I've been in touch with
Maureen and chairman John Surman, and seems almost certainly to be the same line.
Having said that I have yet to contact and find the author of the tree, who is a distant relation of mine.
However, I am pleased to be involved and I hope that is helpful in some way.
Kind regards Janice Thompson

He is my husbands (clive) gt gt grandfather.

Richard
^
William Joseph
^
Joseph
^
Ronald
^
Clive
I would be interested to see any other information you have that relates to the Surmans.

Regards
Celina

My father recently died (Swindon) and I have inherited a family tree of Surmans dating back to 1623. So I was looking up Surman whicn goes back thro' my family between 1623 and the mid 18th century.
On it there is a thread that may be useful to you -
Thomas Surman m Ann Jones @ St Mary Magdeline Oxford,
he had 11 chidren, 1722 -83 - the fourth son, Thomas Surman
Junior m Sarah Pearce in 1783 and moved to Horspath, also brother Richard Surman married Elizabeth Mal...went to Horspath. One of these might be your husband's ancestors
(I don't have the children's names - if it turns out to be
so I have further information on the ancestry.

Hi Maureen
Hope you are well. I have managed to get back as far as Benjamin Surman.. B:1821.Oxfordshire,
D: 1906 Headington Bucks.
He was married to a Sarah Miles. (12.04.1845, Parish Church, Horspath)
His father was William Surman who was a labourer. I have a copy of the marriage cert and I think Sarahs fathers name was Francis(writing not very clear)., he was a labourer too by the looks of things.
Just wondered if anyone has anymore info which I could add to my tree.
Celina

Hi! I don't want to throw a wrench into your current search but maybe this information will help in some way. My gr gr grandfather was from Prussia and his name was not changed like alot of them were ( to make it easier for others to spell) His name was Edward Suermann pronounced "surman". He died in Aurora Indiana after marrying twice and fathering at least 7 children. Alot of times the last "n'" has been left off or the e" or both as your name indicates. Try "Suermann" when looking in Germany, Prussia for your relatives it may be the purest form of the name. Hope this helps you more than confuses! Happy hunting! Cathy

Surman of Horspath/Rose Cottage

Good morning Celina.
-
There are two distinct Surman families in the Horspath/Headington area. And, to the best of my knowledge I do not think that a link has been found between the two. However, a Surman DNA study is being done so something may come up soon.
-
There is a Surman newsletter that you can subscribe to and they know the family (families) better than anyone. Look for Maureen Surman's postings here and send her an e-mail.
-
As a descendant of two William Surman's I know how frustrating it is to trace a popular given name. I have seen the Rose Cottage address in a William Surman search but am 4,000 miles from England so am little help. But, with so many daughters you will have a tough time finding them.
-
I would suggest FreeBMD, which means birth/marriage/death. You can search by town or shire and it will list any one of the three, or all three at once. It's my best suggestion.
-
Send me an e-mail if you have more questions.

I have just started tracing mine and my husbands family tree. At present I have only managed to get back as far as my husbands grt grandfather. WilliamJoseph Surman B: 1861 Rose Cottage Horspath D: 1942 Cranleigh, Surrey.
I have been unable to find 'Rose Cottage' or the name of William Josephs parents. William was one of 8 children. ( Bess, Fanny, Mary, Rose, Sarah, James and another brother but we have no name) These names were given to my by my mother-in-law but I have no dates for any except William and james son James(B1894. D14 feb 1916 in Flanders fields France)
William Joseph married Janette surname unknown. They had William Joseph B: 1888
Margaret B:1891.
Henry(jack) B:1894
Edith Mary B:1896
I have searched various census but have hit a brick wall
It looks like grt grt grandfather Surman lived at Rose cottage , Horspath.Oxfordshire.
.His Son & daughter, James & Sarah Lived in ST Pancras in 1881. Between then and 1901 james died and his wife re-married and was living in Cranleigh by 1901.
Any one good at unravelling family history my brain is comletely scrammbled!!
Celina

Quick overview on DNA Project. Those descended from Edward Sermoner who went to Virginia, USA c.1648 share a common ancestor with the Worcestershire (Severn Valley) UK pedigrees. A Thames Valley pedigree descend from another. We need more participants to enlarge our database to determine just how many 'originators' of the surname there were.

There are a number of 'early' births, i.e. 1843, 1838, 1841, 1848 so it may be that the marriage was before civil registration. Will look through files and get back to you.

Karen, Back to the wind and rain!! Have had a quick look through my records. I have found a Thomas Crosford SERMON born 1850, registered in December Quarter, at Clerkenwell (London). Plenty of marriages for a Thomas but no Crosford (or Croxford) listed. I have noted all IGI entries but time is at a premium at the moment, therefore suggest you (1) look at the IGI for a marriage between a SERMON and CROXFORD and (2) obtain the birth certificate and then look at the 1851 census for address given. Will keep in touch when I have looked through other records. We 'S*RM*N Family History Society' try to fit in all mention of the surname into relevant pedigrees.

Maureen

Nov. 1810 at Birdport St., Maria 1812 and John 1819. Maybe a search for TONES and any related paperwork, i.e. wills, may help.

I was interested to see your emails with Jill on the Horsepath family. Were you aware that we have a Family Gathering in Witney this Saturday the 11th & 12th? We will be taking a tour of the villages with presentations in the afternoon including the results of our 12 month old DNA Project.

Has anyone lost a John Surman born circa 1620? I am trying to locate the origins of such a man who is in Pembrokeshire 1661 with 3 married children and about 10 grandchildren.

SURMAN, NEWCASTLE, UK

In June I responded to a message at FamilyTree.com from an Anita Boyle, nee Surman. Unfortunately her message was dated April and I didn't get to see it until June. In her message she states her family is from the north east of England - Newcastle.

My query - has anyone had contact with Anita Boyle.

I am interested in the story of 'a sailor from Torquay traveling to Newcastle in the mid to late 1800's believed to be of Spanish origin called SURMANO'

SURMAN, SOUTHAMPTON

Donna, In response to your enquiry. I have looked at St. Catherines Indexes and note Eleanor Maria Surman married 1894 Jun quarter at Southampton. The only other name that appeared on my files was that of Eleanor Mary Sirman born 1871 Jun quarter at Witney, Oxford. She was there in the 1881 census, father Joseph and married March quarter 1894 at Witney. You will need to purchase her marriage certificate to find out her father's name and try to locate her on the 1891 census to see where she was born. Hope this helps.

Maureen Surman, Secretary S*rm*n FHS
