A massive long shot but my late father, David, from Manchester, Lancs., UK, born 22 October 1922, had a younger sister Janet. I had heard that when my side of the family emigrated to South Africa in 1953, some other family moved to the USA.

I also believe that we have some family in California.

I have been unsucessful in trying to trace any relations, either from my Manchester UK Sutherland, paternal side or the Davies, Welshpool maternal side.

A marriage of cousins germain

On looking at the marriage of one Alexander Lawrence (or Laurence) and Barbara Gray in Portsoy, Banffshire, on 16 July 1863, I noticed the fact noted that they were cousins germain.

Their respective mothers are Agnes Lawrence (ms Sutherland)(deceased) and Elizabeth Gray (ms Sutherland).

I've seen a posting on the Banffshire board about a marriage between a Hugh Sutherland (Corporal, Argyllshire Fencibles) and an Anne Reid, with the suggestion that these were the parents of Elizabeth (and therefore Agnes based on the evidence of the marriage of Alexander and Barbara).

Does anyone have any connections to or further information about Hugh and Anne?

Norman Sutherland became the President of PGE in San Francisco and was in that position up until the day he passed away He is a family friend his wife and my Grandmother grew up together in San Francisco went to school together
My Grandmothers father Lennox Cinnamond was commissioned to come from Scotland to Stockton Ca to help build the Delta Queen and Delta King
Norman sat in one of my Grandmother's antique rockers and broke it
So all the info about him and his lovely lady Charlotte is very welcome and is also a part of my family history too

Found who I think is them. Norman B (but I think it's actually an R, not a B) Sutherland was born in California, his father born in Scotland and his mother in CA.

Living in the household is an Uncle Clyde H Rowland born in Louisiana and parents born in Scotland.

Also in the household are wife Charlotte C, born in CA, father born in PA, mother born in CA. And daughter Ruth born about 1920 in CA.

Death records state that Charlotte C Dietz Sutherland died in Contra, Contra 29 Sep 1989. Her mother maiden name was Rennick.

Home in 1920: San Francisco Assembly District 26, San Francisco, California. Married, no children.

Elizabeth Sequine b.Nov.9, 1856 D. Oct. 12, 1926 in Detroit, Mi. The Sequine line I don't have any info at his time, but I did some research on the Van Meter line. Cornelia's brother is Scott b. 3/10/1850 in NY d. 7/12/1936 in Ypsilanti. His father is John m. to Nancy Matilda (Jambeau) not sure of that spelling. Scott has a son named Bert, but I don't have any info on him. There is also an Ann Van Meter b.4/28/1862 m. Michael George Deyelunty in Washtenaw, Mi, but I have no idea where she fits in.

Charles parents are Daniel b. 4/6/1833 m. to Elizabeth Sageman. Charles was born in Detroit. Daniel's parents are James b. 11/28/1797 m. to Helen Buie b. 8/6/1807. James was born in Golspie Scotland and Helen was born in Elgin Morayshire Scotland. I will gladly share more info with you. I am also related to this line of Sutherlands.

Scotland's People lists 6 Alexander Sutherlands born between 1735 and 1740 in Caithness. It would be worth getting a subscription to that, but it does cost a few pounds to do the searches.

It would be helpful if your friend would list the known descendants of Alexander, so he could be traced back more accurately.

janets fathers name was John mcbeth married to Helen "ellen" Matheson. AND John's father was Alexander Mcbeth M Christian Gunn who did go to Canada in 1815. the Info I have says that Alexander was born in Kildonan, sutherlandshire, Scotland.
