My great grandmother was Deborah R. Swailes. I don't know anything about the Swailes family that she came from. She was born Oct.04,1833 in PA. maybe Perry Co. Not sure about the county. She married Henry Kleckner abt 1852. They had seven children, all born in Pennsylvania, then they moved to Taylor Co, DesMoines, IA where they had two more children. They moved to Nebraska around 1880s and lived in Ainsworth, Stanton, Atkinson and Valentine NE. Deborah died in Atkinson, NE Jan 1913. Hope I've helped you.

Hi Donna,

Robert Swailes I found out was born in 1808 in Yorkshire and his wife Hannah was also born in Yorkshire in 1815. Their kids however were born in Canada. Their child Ruth was born in 3-27-1837 and married Abram Mayer. No other Ruth's in the tree. I haven't found anything yet on Robert's parents or siblings.

Hi
Found your posting interesting. I am trying to find the parents of Ruth Swales (Swailes). She was born around 1834. Some records say in England, some say in Canada. I beleive I found her living with a relative on the 1852 Ontario census - see below -

1852 Etobicoke, York County Census - Page 25 & 26
Richard Swales - Tavern Keeper - born England - age 33
Eliza Ann Swales - wife - born England - age 28
Ruth Swales - Servant - born England - age 17
Stone Tavern and Blacksmith Shop

Ruth married Robert Garbutt in 1853 but I haven't found the marriage yet to see who her parents were.

I hope we can connect. You mentioned Robert and Hannah had children. Do you know if they were born in England or here in Canada.

Would love to compare notes.

donna

Regarding Rice Swailes, I have only a name and nothing else. However I do have a few questsions - I saw in an earlier post that he died in Bracken Co, KY, and now see that he died in Ohio. Is there anybody that has actual death information? I do know that his wife Mary is buried in Miami Co. Ohio, and that his name as well as that of her second husband is on her tombstones, but where did Rice die and where might he be buried? Also, who were their children?

In the 1850 Livingston County KY census there is a John B Swailes family: John B swailesage 46 b LY wife Lucy 46 b VA, daughter Harriet 28 bVA, Amanda 26 b VA, Francis(female) 14 b KY, John 12 b KY, Mary C 8 b KY James 7 b KY, Lucy 5 b KY. this younger John could be yours , the Swailes family is found in the 1820,1830,1840,1850,1860 census in Livingston County KY. As far as I can tell the father of the above John B is William Swailes, b abt 1780in Nc or PA depending on the census, the mother of John B would be Rhoda? b in VA
Diane,

I looked into this a little, and have reason to believe that George Swailes is the son of Richard Swales and Mary Tower, of Clitheroe, Lancashire. They are in the 1881 census, along with another son,
Robert, and an infant daughter Theresa. Robert is in the 1900 census, in Fall River, MA. Both George and Robert indicate they immigrated in 1883, and I believe they came with their parents, though I haven't found them in any immigration records. I can give you more, if you like, and some pointers where do go next. Contact me by e-mail.

Dear Bert,
I am confused. Was your father your mother's first husband or the man she married later & moved to Florida to be with? Your mother's 1st husband was named Al and I thought Dorris had 5 children with him and then after they were divorced, she put them in the Childrens' Home. Janie and Bobby were the only names I remembered. I was too young at the time. I remember meeting( the fellow your mom went to Florida to be with) once when I was about 15(1957?). Is he your father and what was his name? I am not being nosey, just trying to figure it out in my mind. Dorris stayed with my grandmother and grandfather for a while when they lived on Parnell St. In ST. Louis. I shared and attic room with her for a few days back then and met her later to be husband and then heard later that she moved to Florida. When you say Green Valley Dr., do you mean in St. Louis? I lived for a while on Bon Oak and I think that is near Green Valley. I lived there after we moved out of the city in 1956/1957. You grandmother, Johanna also lived out that way. My mom and dad were not very social, so we didn't do much visiting after we moved to the county.
I couldn't quite make out your e-mail address. Did you get mine.
Sandy

Dear Bert,
I remember your dad, Al. Where are your other brothers and sisters? I remember Janie and Bobbie. I was 62 in Aug. Your cousin, Karen, is:Karen Schultz, 1821 Derhake, ST Louis, MO 63033.Her home phone is: 314 921 9348. Her cell phone is:314 517 4236. The oldest of your aunt's(Elsie's) sons, does not have anything to do with her. I tried to call her when I was in STL in August but got no reply. I have not met her younger son of Elsie's since my grandfather's(Wm. Guy Swailes') funeral. I understand from Elsie(I saw her last Feb) that your grandfather(John) was an alcoholic as was his brother, Wm. Guy, my grandfather. He and Johanna are buried in the veteran's section of the Memorial Park Cemetery on Lucas and Hunt Rds in St. Louis county. Their graves are not far from my grandfather's(Wm. Guy) and my grandmother's. They are in the same secion. I am sure that he was also in the military(your grandfather, John) because that's the secion they are buried in. Your greatgrandfather was lst married to a Mrs. Parmenter down in Gayoso County, Mo. Gayoso no longer exists due to the earthquake they had down there in the 1920's. I understand from another researcher that our great grandfather owned a saloon down there in Southeast Mo. I remember him having a wooden leg. My mom said it wasn't a wooden leg but a brace. I remember him having a banjo or something. Elsie didn't verify that. Elsie said that he limped due to having been shot in the leg when he was young. Elsie says he had a fish market there in STL. I vaguely remember him and our great grandmother, Rebecca Campbell Swailes. She had long white hair when she let it down at night. My mother says that they were very kind and Elsie says how much she loved her grandfather, our great grandfather. Have you heard from Elsie?

Was very glad to hear a response from you. I live in St.Petersburg ,Florida. I have lived here for twenty years. My mother lives here with me. So you know my Aunt Net(Elsie) then. Have you met her two sons Henry and Jerry? I was planning to come to St.lLouis before the bad weather set in but I probly won't make it till winter is over. The reason for that is my Mother had a stroke, but now she is home with me. I remember Karen .I think my Aunt Net use to watch her when we were all young.I"m really glad to discover that we are related.Cause I really don;t know to much about my Mother's parents or grand-parents,cause I would really like to know. I just now found out when my fathers parents are buried at. That's one reason I was going to come to St.Louis to see if they had markers on their grave sites. Every one calls me Bert. I'm 57 the 12th. of this month. Please fell free to e-mail me any time.I felt good about seeing your posting . I told my friend at work today that I felt that we were related. Again thank you for answering the posting and I hope that we will keep in touch. You can give me Karens number if you want. Bert

Yes, we are related. Dorris was my father, John L. Swailes', 1st cousin. Our great-grandfather and great-grandmother are buried in Memorial Park in STL. I just had a headstone put on their graves. I remember your mother and I am sure she remembers me. My father died in 1995. I have been doing the genealogy for a long time. Rebecca Campbell Swailes was married to our great-grandfather when she was 13. She was an orphan.I have met your first cousin (Karen Shultz). She is one of the children from your uncle Guy Fox Swailes'
1st marriage. I will give you her address, if you want it. She is very much interested. She lives in STL in Florissant and was raised in a foster home. She has found all her siblings but one. They were split up when they went to foster care.. Where do you live?
Sincerely
Sandra Swailes Behle

Hi Bernie

I wonder if you can help me, I am trying to trace the birth of William Swales born 1793 at I believe Burton Leonard. He married in 1820 in Leeds to Mary Morrell.

Thanks

David Taylor

Sandra,

Thanks. I can confirm from the 1900 census that your Great Grandfather
was a saloon keeper. Too bad I couldn't find them in the 1870 census,
since his father would probably still have been with them. They
should be in MO, since his sister was born there in 1868, and they were still
there in 1880. There are a few handfuls of Swailes in the 1860 and 1850 census in Kentucky, but we don't know his father's first name nor his mother's maiden name, which is a problem. I may poke around a little more.

You mentioned the "Parementer mystery". Do you know anything more about them?

As far as I know, I'm not related to your Swailes (in this country). It is such
an uncommon name, that I expect we're all related back there somewhere,
but that would be in England. My line came to the US in 1891.

-steve

Dear Steve,
If you need any further info on this line, I can provide. John and Rebecca were married into old age. Rebecca was only 13 when she married John. The story in the family goes that he was the storekeeper and she was recently orphaned and he decided to marry her. They had several children that did not live. I have their family bible. My father's first cousin(daughter of his Uncle John) one of the 2 surviving children gave it to me last year. Her name is Annetta Abshier. We always called her "Elsie". She is still living in Bridgeton, MO. My great-grandfather may have had a saloon at one time. He walked with a limp from being shot in the leg when he was younger. Elsie told me this. My mother, who rarely says anything nice about anybody, told me the that my greatgrandparents, John and Rebecca were very kind people.I remember them vaguely. I was about 6 when my great grandfather John died. I recently had a gravestone put on their graves in Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Louis county. I will have to check the DOB for them in my records. I don't have it memorized. My grandfather, William Guy had only one child, my father, John L.. He really didn't have a middle name just the initial "L" but on his service records, he said his middle name was "Louis". My brother Steve had "Louis" as a middle name. If I can be of any help to you, just let me know. The surname is spelled Swales in some places. I think even in John and Rebecca's family bible.
Sincerely,
Sandra Swailes Behle

Dear Steve,
Thanks so much for the information. It clarifies the Parementer mystery. My great-grandfather was the John Lewis Swailes that married Rebecca. His son, William Guy was my grandfather. His son, John L. was my father. They are all deceased. I had 3 brothers. The middle brother(my favorite) Steve passed away in Jan.1997. He was a Vietnam veteran and had no children.
Thanks again for all your help.
Sincerely,
Sandra Swailes Behle

Found John L. Swailes, age 16 in the 1880 census for Gayoso, Pemiscot, MO.
He had two sisters, Lucy A., age 18 and Almira J. age 12, all born in MO. Their
mother, Margaret E., age 38, born in KY, had re-married. Husband's name looks like J. C. Permenter. The Swailes' father was born in KY.

1900 census of Pascola, Pemiscot, has John Swailes, a saloon keeper, born Nov 1863, in MO, parents from KY. Wife Rebecca, born Mar 1876, in TN, married 11 years, with 3 children, 2 living, who were John L. born Nov 1895, and William G., born Jun 1898, both in MO.

John, Rebecca & John L. (seems like a popular name with this family) are
in St.Louis in 1920. John (sr.) is a partner in "Coal & Ice".

I spent a little time trying to find them in the 1870 census, without any luck.
Either they are not in the index, or the name is badly mangled. I also
searched based on the first names, ages and birth locations, without finding
a match.

Not seeing them in 1910 either... seems like they only like the even numbered decades.

Hope this helps.
Sandra, I'm answering for my son Russell. He's not avaliable. We have very little on the Swales family. Rice died in Ohio. Also found a soldier, Rue Swailes from Licking county, Ohio that could have been a relative. Rice and his wife, Mary Hathaway, had several girls. One of them married into the Battreall family. That's where we fit. Don't know the nationality of Rice. Van Swol in Dutch. Several different spellings in English. Sorry I can't help more
